Elliot Ness and the American Demon. Almost sounds like a Nancy Drew Mystery. I wish the story were that benign. In the mid 1930's, just after Prohibition ended, Cleveland played host to a killer whose grizzly murders rivaled that of London's Jack the Ripper. The victims were all beheaded and often their limbs were also removed earning this sadist the moniker: Torso Killer! My guest today is New York Times bestselling author, Daniel Stashower, who's here to share the story of Elliot Ness and the hunt for America's Jack the Ripper.
It's launch day for Cleveland Noir, an anthology offering a twisty, duplicitous, and sometimes murderous view of Cleveland. Anthology editors Michael Ruhlman and Miesha Wilson Headen discuss the noir genre, why Cleveland is an apt city for this work, the process of curating and editing the anthology, the diverse range of voices and geographic locations represented, tips for new writers, and more. Michael Ruhlman is the award-winning bestselling author of nine nonfiction books, nine cookbooks, and a collection of novellas, as well as a coauthor of many additional cookbooks. Subscribe to his Substack newsletter here. Miesha Wilson Headen is a journalist, the recipient of Best Minority Issues Reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists, has worked as a bookseller, and has organized multiple books fairs in Ohio. She is a former mayor of Richmond Heights. Cleveland Noir contributing writers: Paula McLain, Susan Petrone, Mary Grimm, Dana McSwain, Abby L. Vandiver, Sam Conrad, Angela Crook, D.M. Pulley, Miesha Wilson Headen, Alex DiFrancesco, J.D. Belcher, Jill Bialosky, Thrity Umrigar, Michael Ruhlman, and Daniel Stashower. Finally, as mentioned in this episode, Loganberry Books still has a few remaining Author Alley events this summer: August 12 is Fiction Showcase, and September 9 is the Children's & Illustrated Lit Showcase. Visit the 2023 Author Alley page for details. Page Count is produced by Ohio Center for the Book at Cleveland Public Library. Award winning true crime author, DANIEL STASHOWER is here tonight to discuss his riveting new publication "American Demon." Eliot Ness, fresh from his busting of Capone's crime empire, becomes involved with trying to stop a serial killer in Cleveland's unseemly neighborhoods. Stashower shows us methods that the police department had access to and how they needed to modernize to stop the gristly killings. We will learn about how this case had similarities to traits identified by modern profilers. How did a change in coroners slow the investigations? Who were the suspects and what were their motives? How effective was Ness in this case? https://www.amazon.com/American-Demon-Eliot-Americas-Ripper-ebook/dp/B09NTK59C5/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3LUH9L5TYXFVC&keywords=american+demon&qid=1688946976&sprefix=%2Caps%2C118&sr=8-

During the 1930's the city of Cleveland was a scary place because a serial killer was on the loose. A man named Eliot Ness was running the Cleveland police department and he was trying to solve this series of gruesome murders. It wasn't easy. In fact, it was impossible. True crime is very popular these days. This account of those horrific crimes gaveme nightmares.

Eliot Ness is perhaps best known for his efforts to enforce prohibition laws in Chicago, but his efforts tracking down the American Jack the Ripper in Cleveland are less recounted. On this episode, Daniel Stashower discussed his new book, American Demon.
The Paranormal 60 with Dave Schrader - Haunted by an American Demon with Daniel Stashower, Sabrina Marie & Tresa MuncyOver the period of four years, thirteen bodies would be scattered across the city. The bodies were dismembered with surgical precision and drained of blood.Terror gripped the city. Amid the growing uproar, Cleveland's besieged mayor turned to his newly-appointed director of public safety: Eliot Ness. Ness had come to Cleveland fresh from his headline-grabbing exploits in Chicago, where he and his band of “Untouchables” led the frontline assault on Al Capone's bootlegging empire. Now he would confront a case that would redefine his storied career. How did America's Ripper hide in plain sight? Daniel Stashower takes us into the crimes as only he can. Then later, we revisit the supernatural aspects of this story as covered in The Holzer Files: Season 2 Episode 1 The Phantom Hand where Dave Schrader, Cindy Kaza and Shane Pittman revisited the sites of some of these murders in the hope of putting restless souls to peace. Sabrina Marie and Tresa Muncy join us to talk about the paranormal in and around the city that ties to these devastating deaths.PLUS a new ParaTune This Land is Cursed by Dan DoughertyFind more on Dan here: https://dandougherty.bandcamp.comGet a copy of American Demon here: https://amzn.to/3TN51fmGo to The Old B&O Paranormal Conference and get tix here: https://bit.ly/3x07nxXRevist the paranormal side of this case by watching The Holzer Files Season 2 Episode 1 The Phantom Hand on Discovery+
Boston had its Strangler. California had the Zodiac Killer. And in the depths of the Great Depression, Cleveland had the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run.On September 5th, 1934, a young beachcomber made a gruesome discovery on the shores of Cleveland's Lake Erie: the lower half of a female torso, neatly severed at the waist. The victim, dubbed “The Lady of the Lake,” was only the first of a butcher's dozen. Over the next four years, twelve more bodies would be scattered across the city. The bodies were dismembered with surgical precision and drained of blood. Some were beheaded while still alive.Terror gripped the city. Now he would confront a case that would redefine his storied career.Award-winning author Daniel Stashower shines a fresh light on one of the most notorious puzzles in the annals of crime, and uncovers the gripping story of Ness's hunt for a sadistic killer who was as brilliant as he was cool and composed, a mastermind who was able to hide in plain sight. American Demon reconstructs this ultimate battle of wits between a hero and a madman. AMERICAN DEMON: Eliot Ness and the Hunt for America's Jack The Ripper-Daniel Stashower
Spooktemper continues with Daniel, author of American Demon, who tells us all about cutting bodies in half with surgical precision. I mean a serial killer doing it, not Daniel. He's an author, not a surgeon. And speaking of serial killers, we learn that Brett Favre might as well be one in Tom's eyes. It doesn't get more evil than being a prick, apparently. On this episode of The Terribly Vexed Podcast the fellas talk about Dr. Joseph Bell. In 1877, a young outpatient clerk named Arthur Conan Doyle began watching Dr. Bell's incredible powers of observation, deduction, and reasoning while dealing with patients. From something as simple as the color of the mud on a patients shoes Dr. Bell could deduce a patients occupation, where he or she lived, and which boat had ferried them that morning. As a writer, Conan Doyle was inspired by Dr. Bell's "method" and created a character that has become a household name, and one of the most popular detectives of all time. Dr. Bell was also a pioneer of forensic science and paved the way for what we now know as C.S.I. As well as helping countless patients throughout his lifetime, he was also called upon to assist police in many cases including the Jack the Ripper murders. Mary Scott Castle was hot, rich, and well connected. But when she met a 21-year-old Porter Charlton, she was down on her luck. She’d just gotten divorced, and she’d blown her reputation to bits by shooting a man in the lobby of the Waldorf Astoria. But when Mary and Porter locked eyes, it was love at first sight. They got married a month later, and took off for a romantic European honeymoon. There was just one problem. Porter wasn’t so stable himself. Then Brandi tells us about a horrific attack in a Lululemon store. It was March of 2011. Coworkers Brittany Norwood and Jayna Murray had just left the Lululemon Athletica store in Bethesda, Maryland, when Brittany realized that she’d left her wallet in the store. When she called Jayna to tell her what she’d done, Jayna was accommodating. She told Brittany she’d meet her back at the store. The pain re-entered the store, leaving the door unlocked behind them. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Lady in the lake” by Mara Bovsun The Daily News. “The Murder of the Beautiful and Accomplished Mrs. Edith Woodhill, 1909,” written by Thomas Duke in 1910, posted to historicalcrimedetective.com “Charlton Must go to Italy for Trial,” The Evening Times-Republican, June 10, 1913 “May Ask Wilson to Save Slayer,” The Washington Herald , June 11, 1913 “True Detective Tales: What is Justice? JD Salinger - The Eloquent Recluse Smithsonian Associates, Interview Series Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, I'm your host Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode number 306. As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living, series, we are going to be talking about one of my favorite authors, JD Salinger, and our guests today are Daniel Stashower & Scott Sedar. Daniel Stashower is a well known author of history, and Scott Sedar, an actor, who will read selections from JD Salinger's most celebrated works. This show and interview are a treat for me as JD Salinger, and Catcher in the Rye, are all time favorites of mine. Ever since my freshman year of high school, when the book, Catcher in the Rye was suggested to me by my mother, who was an English teacher, I have been infatuated with it. I remember reading it, and re-reading it, I think 6 times, even over the summer months, between freshman and sophomore year of HS. The novel follows a boy, Holden Caulfield, who has an issue with growing up and the loss of innocence. Needless to say, I could relate, as many of us in the Not Old Better Show audience can relate. I love author JD Salinger and his book, Catcher in the Rye, so much because I find beauty in the idea of preserving innocence and appreciating the moments. Not that I hope to be Holden Caulfield (he clearly does not seem to have the perfect life yet who does), but rather I wish I had the same ideals and perspective (of perceiving innocence in everything, and living in the present). We'll talk about that today, innocence, and much more, including whether Holden Caulfield and JD Salinger are really one and the same. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Daniel Stashower and Scott Sedar, who'll be presenting at Smithsonian Associates program, January 7, 2019, JD Salinger, The Eloquent Recluse. Crossroads - the Columbia DSL @ the Film Society of Lincoln Center
This week we're joined by award winning author and Sherlock Holmes expert Daniel Stashower. During our conversation Daniel shares the creative challenges that Arthur C. Doyle faced, sheds light on what made Sherlock Holmes so unique at the time and explores what makes the detective and his loyal companion so iconic.
“The Hour of Peril” In February of 1861, just days before he assumed the presidency, Abraham Lincoln faced a “clear and fully-matured” threat of assassination as he traveled by train from Springfield to Washington for his inauguration. Over a period of thirteen days the legendary detective Allan Pinkerton worked feverishly to detect and thwart the plot, assisted by a captivating young widow named Kate Warne, America’s first female private eye. As Lincoln’s train rolled inexorably toward “the seat of danger,” Pinkerton struggled to unravel the ever-changing details of the murder plot, even as he contended with the intractability of Lincoln and his advisors, who refused to believe that the danger was real. With time running out Pinkerton took a desperate gamble, staking Lincoln’s life—and the future of the nation—on a “perilous feint” that seemed to offer the only chance that Lincoln would survive to become president. Daniel Stashower is an acclaimed biographer and narrative historian and winner of the Edgar, Agatha, and Anthony awards, and the Raymond Chandler Fulbright Fellowship in Detective Fiction. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Smithsonian Magazine, AARP: The Magazine, and National Geographic Traveler as well as other publications.
Daniel Stashower discussed and signed his book, "The Hour of Peril: The Secret Plot to Murder Lincoln Before the Civil War," a riveting historical narrative which delves into the "Baltimore Plot" conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. When Conan Doyle embarked on his whaling adventure at the age of 20, little could he have guessed what awaited him.And little did the world know how profoundly his experiences would influence his later life, including the creation for which we know him most intimately - that of Sherlock Holmes. We're joined in this episode by the editors of , Jon Lellenberg, BSI and Daniel Stashower, BSI. Jon and Dan have been with us on previous episodes of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere: when we discussed on , and again on when we covered , a lost Conan Doyle manuscript. What we learn about Conan Doyle's six and a half month voyage on the Hope is absolutely fascinating - from the provenance of the manuscript itself and how Dame Jean Conan Doyle worked tirelessly to ensure this publication could be seen, to the harrowing adventures that Arthur himself saw as part of this arctic voyage and more - and what we consider the world would have been like had this journey not taken place, or worse: if events had taken a more grisly turn. From the raw and harsh realities that required the ministrations of a third year medical student, to the unexpected swims and from the daily thoughts to the watercolor illustrations, we gain a view of Conan Doyle that truly helps the reader understand the seeds that were planted for a later career. What would his mother, (the "Ma'am") have thought of his accepting the adventure? What would his work been like absent such adventures? We speculate with the two men who have come to know Conan Doyle intimately through their previous work. One item of note that the editors shared with us is that Dr. William Henry Neale, the surgeon on board theEira (a ship that the Hope encountered), posed in a photograph with Conan Doyle at the time. A later photo (in 1892 and pictured below) shows Dr. Neale, who could very easily pass for Dr. Watson. There is another item of note related to Dr. Watson that was mentioned by Conan Doyle at the conclusion of his voyage, but rather than spoil it here, we'll let you discover it yourself in the audio. Finally, rather than the traditional Editor’s Gas-Lamp, we thought that while we had the editors with us, they could read to us from Doyle's diary. We asked Dan to read a poem that Doyle wrote in the July 26 entry, titled "Meerschaum Pipe."We then turn to your comments on previous episodes and review your response to some of our questions/surveys on Facebook. Of course we do our housekeeping and mention all of our social network presence: on , , and - including the .
We're pleased to welcome two noted authors to the show this week: Jon Lellenberg and Daniel Stashower. The recently edited a biography about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle along with Doyle's great-nephew Charles Foley. Comprised of hundreds and hundreds of letters, the book is already a critical success and is gaining popularity on both sides of the Atlantic. We talk with Jon and Dan to get some of the behind-the-scenes information from them. Please do consider subscribing to this podcast for free; you may also join our Facebook group, where there's an additional opportunity to interact with the community.
