Welcome to Parsha and Prose, where Rabbi Shlomo Gemara and I weave the Torah's timeless wisdom with the insights of great literature. This week, we're diving into the double Torah portion Acharei Mot-Kedoshim (Leviticus 16:1–20:27), which grapples with the aftermath of Nadav and Avihu's deaths, the Yom Kippur atonement rituals, and a call to holiness through ethical and ritual laws. Through the lens of J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, we explore how Holden Caulfield's restless quest for authenticity and his struggle with a “phony” world mirrors the Torah's demand for genuine connection to God and others. Just as Acharei Mot seeks purification after loss and Kedoshim urges us to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18), Holden's yearning to protect innocence and find truth reflects a search for meaning in a fractured society. Join us as we uncover how these texts challenge us to confront our flaws, embrace sincerity, and build a life of purpose amidst chaos.

Goodbye, Tahrir Square: Coming of Age as a Jew of the Nile (Cherry Orchard Books, 2025) is a first-person memoir written from the standpoint of a Jewish boy growing up in Egypt during the watershed years that shaped the Middle East into the powder keg it is today. Described as the “Holden Caulfield of the Nile” for his rebellious attitude, the boy witnessed—between the ages of seven to fourteen—the 1952 revolution that overthrew King Farouk and gave rise to the dictatorship of Gamal Abdel Nasser; the 1956 Suez war that marked the end of the British empire; and in its wake the destruction of the Jewish community that had lived in Egypt since Biblical times. Though set in times of revolution and war, Goodbye, Tahrir Square is not a political book. It is the story of a boy whose close-knit extended Sephardic family, full of rich traditions and colorful characters, is suddenly torn asunder by the forces of revolution and war. A man-child coming of age like a wild cactus in the rubble of the past, overcoming a hostile environment, forging friendships that transcend ethnic and religious animus, and finding his own identity as he awakens to literature, history, art, archaeology, and the magic of love and sex. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 15, 2024 is: cavalier • kav-uh-LEER • adjective Someone described as cavalier shows no concern for important or serious matters. Cavalier also describes attitudes, manners, etc., that show the same lack of concern. // The company provides regular training about the dangers of being cavalier in sharing privileged information. See the entry > Examples: “I'd failed math and chemistry the previous quarter; my European history teacher had decried—in front of the class—my ‘flippant and cavalier attitude.' My GPA was a 1.8. But the night before the assignment was due I wrote a play about the thing that I—and Holden Caulfield—both passionately hated: The phoniness of organized structures, the way that religious belief was—in my fifteen-year-old mind—nothing but pretense and emptiness. … The next day, class began with a flourish. Ted Sod, the visiting playwright, stormed through the door. We'd all done good work, he told us, but one play—in particular—stood out. … And then, to my inestimable shock, he pointed at me.” — Pauls Toutonghi, LitHub.com, 5 Oct. 2023 Did you know? Mount up, fellow language caballeros! We think you'll agree that the origins of cavalier make a great deal of horse sense. The noun cavalier—which traces back to the Late Latin word caballārius, meaning “horseback rider,” and even further to the Latin word for “work horse,” caballus—originally referred to a gentleman or knight trained in arms and horsemanship. The adjective trotted into English just a few decades after the noun, first describing those thought to embody qualities of gallantry and suaveness associated with such soldiers. However, the English Puritans later applied the noun with disdain to their adversaries, the swashbuckling royalist followers of Charles I, who sported longish hair and swords. Their use undoubtedly contributed to the adjective's “flippant” sense, which is now the most common. To saddle someone (or their behavior, attitude, etc.) with the descriptor today is to say that they do not demonstrate the expected or required care for serious matters.

With Salinger's Soul: His Personal & Religious Odyssey (Post Hill Press), author and retired journalist/editor Stephen B. Shepard explores the life of JD Salinger and the hidden core of an author who became famous for avoiding fame. We get into why Stephen decided to chase this elusive ghost, why Salinger didn't make it into his previous book about Jewish American writers, whether he believes Salinger's unpublished writing will see the light of day, and why it was important that he approach the book as biography and not literary criticism (although he does bring a reader's voice to the book). We talk about the lack of sex in Salinger's fiction, the uncanniness of Holden Caulfield's voice, Salinger's WWII trauma, his rise to fame, search for privacy, abandonment of publishing, embrace of Vedanta & ego-death, and his pattern of pursuing young women, and how it all maybe ties together. We also discuss Stephen's career as a journalist and how it influences his writing, what he learned in building a graduate program in journalism at CUNY, the ways we both started out in business-to-business magazines (he went a lot farther than I did, editing Newsweek and Business Week), how journalism has changed over the course of his career, Philip Roth's biography and what it means to separate the book from the writer, and a lot more. In this episode, we're celebrating Pride Month with author Derek Milman. Derek talks with host Suzanne McCabe about his latest YA novel, A Darker Mischief. The gripping story revolves around Cal, a queer teen from a poor town in Mississippi. At Essex Academy, an elite boarding school in New England, Cal tries to fit in and falls in love along the way. “I would encourage any teen picking up A Darker Mischief,” Derek says, “to see how Cal can surmount everything that has happened in the past and his sense of unbelonging and intense alienation to find love.” In addition to A Darker Mischief, Derek is the author of the acclaimed Scream All Night (Balzer + Bray, 2018) and Swipe Right for Murder (Jimmy Patterson, 2021). A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, Derek has performed on stages across the country and appeared in several TV shows and films, including The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). → Resources A Darker Mischief: Check out Derek Milman's boarding school thriller about a queer teen named Cal, who finds himself swept up into a world of old money and privilege privilege. The Catcher in the Rye is an American novel by J. D. Salinger that was partially published in serial form from 1945–46 before being novelized in 1951. Originally intended for adults, it is often read by adolescents for its themes of angst and alienation, and as a critique of superficiality in society.[4][5] The novel also deals with complex issues of innocence, identity, belonging, loss, connection, sex, and depression. The main character, Holden Caulfield, has become an icon for teenage rebellion.[6] Caulfield, nearly of age, gives his opinion on just about everything as he narrates his recent life events.   Our theme song was written and performed by Anna Bosnick. This is a classic that I just don't get?'The Catcher In The Rye' by J.D. Salinger is a fictional coming of age story about a rebellious teen in New York City. Holden Caulfield is expelled from an elite school and fills a couple of days with activities (illegal and otherwise) before returning home to confront his parents with the news.I summarised the book as follows. "If you want a whiny self-absorbed kid, you've got the right book. Maybe this resonated with the time but I feel no connection to Holden nor his predicament/way of life. Maybe he needs some phoniness because I really see no positive aspects in him as a character and adding in the stylistic choices of the repetitive writing made me give it a pretty low rating."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. They share how the Type Four appears in the workplace, what drives them and growth strategies.“I think a lot of times Fours feel like they're the most tapped into reality because they see more of the darkness of life. Depths do contain darkness, but just because you're tapped into darkness doesn't mean you're tapped into depth.” -Creek [13:07]“For me, the growth for the Four is in realizing that most of what they're doing is just derivative of say Holden Caulfield in ‘Catcher in the Rye.'” -Mario [14:27]“I think we all have beliefs that are our biases given by our type. In the case of Type Four, while striving to feel unique, when you think that your situation is more difficult, tougher, you suffer more, and it is a misrepresentation of reality. And my experience is that Fours who are able to see that and be more objective about situations they're in have a better time responding to it. They're more adaptive because they see more objectively and they suffer less.” -María José [43:38]TIMESTAMPS[00:01] Intro[00:52] Everyone wants to be a Four[03:06] ATA approach to Type Four[06:00] Four in the workplace[10:50] Tendency to compare to other people[13:44] The Holden Caulfield syndrome[18:05] Connecting to Point Two and One[26:11] Same type interactions[29:05] Strength of opinion and perspective[38:55] What's driving the Four [41:55] Growth strategies for the Four[47:06] OutroConnect with us:Awareness to ActionEnneagram on Demand Mario Sikora: IG: @mariosikoraWeb: mariosikora.comPod: Enneagram in a MovieMaria Jose Munita: IG: @mjmunitaWeb: mjmunita.comSeth "Creek" Creekmore: IG: @creekmoremusicPod: Fathoms | An Enneagram PodcastPod: Delusional Optimism

He describes his family, and shows how proud he is because he is not a "phony".   Holden has been kicked out of his school Pencey Prep, a seemingly common occurrence, as Pencey Prep is Holden's 3rd Prep school.  Holden holds a lot of hate towards his school, but also wants to properly say goodbye to it, and one of his favorite teachers, Mr Spencer. However, Mark has a mysterious past and clandestine meetings around the world with shady figures. The possibility exists that the CIA wanted John Lennon dead and used Mark David Chapman as a Manchurian Candidate to see that goal fulfilled. On this week's podcast I am telling you about ghost pirates. As you should all know by now I'm a giant nerd and one of my newest obsessions is Our Flag Means Death on HBO starring Rhys Darby, who I would leave my husband for, and Taika Waitka as the pirates Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard. Some people might not realize that these were real guys! I feel like everyone has heard of Blackbeard from the 5 million pop culture references out there like Ian McShane in the Pirate of the Caribbean franchise and apparently Hugh Jackman in Pan. I need to go watch that apparently. Bonnet is less well known. Growing up I had a pirate phase, I mean who didn't, and I remember reading about the Gentleman Pirate. He wasn't my favorite. I kinda lumped him with the likes of Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye and the classic poor little rich kid archetype and I honestly hadn't thought much about him since. And then I found out Rhys Darby was in a pirate show and I needed it in my life more than anything. Our Flag Means Death puts a comedic and romantic spin on Bonnet and Blackbeard's relationship that made me care a little too much about these characters. And as I'm watching the show I couldn't help but wonder if there's ghost stories associated with them and of course there is! So I did some digging and honestly Bonnet might be one of my favorite pirates now! That being said, what happens to these guys is pretty rough so maybe prepare yourself for that. I actually teared up researching this one. So lets get into shall we?
