OMG, Kristy's running for eighth-grade president! Which sounds extremely low-stakes until you compare it to Mallory's unopposed run for seventh-grade secretary. Plus, a delightful glimpse of what might have been, if only Scholastic weren't COWARDS. On today's agenda: Alan Gray's writhing corpse; pizza legalities; Esther questions the nature of her reality; gritty, challenging middle-school theatre; a terrible shortage of visiting authors; delicious moles; pandering to the electorate for fun and profit; extensive bike-based misery; a Frookie Cookie deep dive. Our theme song is ‘The Incredible Shrinking Larry' by Matt Oakley and ‘Big Band Jingle A' is by Lobo Loco, both on the Free Music Archive. After a slumber party send-off, Dawn spends spring break in Orange County with her father and brother and tries on a more laid-back lifestyle among many other blondes making similar snack (but questionable beach) choices. Dawn considers what her quotidian routine would be like if she decides to stay, and whether the abundant sunshine and other items on the California pros list win out over the few on the Stoneybrook one. Slide into the booth beside us at Cabbages and Kings as we hash over pizza fouls, flight attendant fails, and preferred alternatives to LAX in our reivew of Dawn on the Coast. As mentioned on this episode:Sardi's portraits artists: Alex Gard, John Mackey, Donald Bevan, and Richard BaratzA glimpse of the TV-on-a-cart scene from Back to the Future (1985)List of BSC books written by Ann M. OMG, Mallory's found a ghost cat! Or a reincarnation cat? Or possibly just a regular cat? This book definitely comes down on the side of “ghosts are real”, but is EXTREMELY vague on what ghosts actually are and whether they can use a litterbox. Also, the Pikes learn about Alzheimer's! Merry Christmas, folks! On today's agenda: a litany of crimes against food; the cool lesbian biker auntie we all wish we were; Mallory and Jessi's shameful secret; it's not crop theft if you know the farmer; some remarks about aging that are frankly uncalled-for; cut-rate ectoplasm detectors are a false economy; Claudia Kishi, old-person whisperer; Esther's cat chooses violence. Our theme song is ‘The Incredible Shrinking Larry' by Matt Oakley and ‘Big Band Jingle A' is by Lobo Loco, both on the Free Music Archive. OMG, Laine's coming to Stoneybrook! Unfortunately, she's become a huge pain in the ass! And she's way beyond pigs. Thank goodness Kristy's here to be loudly unimpressed. Meanwhile, we plan for extremely specific hypothetical fights among our various children. On today's agenda: Chekhov's bathtub; respecting your friends by blowing up their graves; everyone's favourite sleepover movie; china clown fandom rise up; seasonal rodent copyright law; bringing back 1910s slang to prove a point; adventures in prune art; a tasteful anecdote from Karen and Esther's school days; half a borough of fun; the crucial differences between a casual red outfit and a trendy red outfit. Our theme song is ‘The Incredible Shrinking Larry' by Matt Oakley and ‘Big Band Jingle A' is by Lobo Loco, both on the Free Music Archive. On today's agenda: we finally hold Belgium accountable; Get Ready With Kristy; southern boys be skiing; how to know when it's true love, Ann-style; the haunting of Bart Taylor; Chewy's double life; Esther says a wrong word; Richard Spier has some chill downtime; a land of wonder and bad cup noodles; Madame Noelle busts out the emergency liqueurs; the best Christmas present for the boring stepfather in your life; a lot of depressing foreshadowing about climate change. The Baby-Sitters Club books, by Ann M Martin, were first published in 1986. With the help of Scholastic book fairs and order forms, they became one of the most popular YA series of the 80s and 90s. Over the initial run of the series, there were 131 primary books published, along with dozens of specials, super specials, mysteries — and that's not even counting the whole Little Sister series. Now the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to pour over all of the books and decide which entry is the Best Baby-Sitters Club book of all time. Books discussed include Stacey's Emergency, Keep Out Claudia, Dawn and the Impossible Three, Jessi's Secret Language, Kristy's Great Idea, Mary Anne's Makeover, Abby's Lucky Thirteen, and more! Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Amma Marfo, Jennifer Chen, Joelle Boedecker, and Karissa Kloss as they share their mutual love of this iconic book series. This week's book is all about learning how to stay Best Friends 4Ever from across the country, something we personally know a little about after moving so far away from each other :(. We read P.S. Longer Letter Later by Paula Danziger and Ann M. Martin, published in 1998. Main characters Tara*Starr and Elizabeth's only source of communication is snail mail as they write to each other about their problems of finding new friends, dealing with their changing families, and the complications of seventh grade. Discussions of topic include: preteen girl rage, our AIM screen names of the past, and great book outfit descriptions featuring Doc Martens. Plus, our own experiences of the hell that was middle school. We loved looking back on this piece of nostalgic “juvenile” fiction so much! OMG, there's a Baby Parade! Kristy and the gang grapple with the age-old question “What if illegal daycare, but on a poorly-conceived parade float?" It's a difficult one to answer, because Ann categorically does not know what a float is. Meanwhile, we have an idea for a TV procedural that is going to make us all extremely rich. On today's agenda: Scrabble trauma; fun with asbestos; any number of babies can be too many babies; new frontiers in AI art; Claudia learns to weld; a bold editorial stance on pipe types; glamorous uses for leftover meatloaf; situations that are not enhanced by a cat; none of us can be invited anywhere; a sick burn on the memory of Mimi; Slim Peabody entertains Watson and only Watson; Charlie has a cathartic afternoon at the rubbish dump. OMG, Dawn's having a big sleepover! Unfortunately, the sleepover itself is the only part of the book that didn't make us cringe violently. Well, that and the stegosaurus rap. On today's agenda: we are thirsty for Watson and cancelling Richard; a tragic lack of Lusk merch; Mrs Rodowski has no shame; Ann doesn't believe in research and we don't believe in the Colts; hot vegans in your area; Charlotte Johansson's trademark wisdom; a U-haul full of emergency caviar; a religious souvenir face-off; the four elementary teachers of the apocalypse; can collection life hacks; Goober and the Flugelmeisters; good dogs that do bad things; the slowest news week ever. We're taking another week off this week, as some of us persist in trying to move across the country, so please enjoy one of our very favorite Baby-Sitters Club Club episodes from the past few years this week, and we'll be back next week to talk about either Music and Lyrics or Wedding Crashers! Five years ago, two men made a solemn promise: They would tell the story of Agent Associate Baby-Sitter Shannon Kilbourne the way Ann M. Martin always intended it to be told. Almost immediately, one of those men fully delivered on that promise, but literally no one noticed, primarily because of an almost overwhelming lack of interest from the other man. But now, in full technicolor, you can finally hear the breathtaking tale of danger and intrigue known in Baby-Sitters Club-associated circles as "A Time to Kilbourne." Music credits: "Mysterious Spy Movie," by Shorties "A Suspense," by Fat Bunny "Suspense & Crime," by Alexander Rufire "Fight Back," by Shorties "Suspenseful Background," by Luca Francini "Tech Glitch Opener," by Gentle Jammers "Spy on Me," by 2A Soundworks Thanks as always to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music, and to Superbrat for the outro music. Emily's mom (and Esme's sister) is in town just in time for the publication of this banger by the mysterious Margot Becker R. We discuss Dayna's boomer childhood compared to Ann's boomer childhood, plus what we think was left out of the story when Scholastic pushed this to market in 1993 (and why Dayna's current students that love the BSC wouldn't love this book). Hard work gets you everywhere, people! Plus lots of nuggets including the original Pikes (and Emily MISSED IT).
Ann M. Martin has written more than just the 100+ titles in the beloved Baby-Sitters Club series. She's also authored a range of other books, including 1987's Just a Summer Romance, a book that inspires lots of juicy conversation on Episode 235 . On this episode, Alli and her guest cover all kinds of ground, including the maturity of teen characters, meet cutes, dating red flags, celebrity love stories, diet culture, and pre-social media nostalgia.Falon Ballard is the author of Lease on Love and Just My Type. This is now officially an Ann M. Martin stan podcast. Ok, maybe not since our loyalties are divided between the many great authors we've revisited, but we are firmly team Ann. This episode we embark on our long-awaited journey into The Baby-Sitters Club. We are beginning at the only possible starting point: Kristy Thomas. We are tackling Kristy's Great Idea and Kristy's Big Day. Are you a Claudia or a Mary Anne? Maybe we were all just Claudia all along. These books explore feminism, demonstrate the value of a solid business plan, and offer some really weird takes on juvenile diabetes. We learn how many adults it takes to make an appetizer, discuss deadbeat dads and decorum, and unexpectedly uncover a potential bombshell about the CEO of a hot cocoa conglomerate during our Person in the Stacks segments. These Books Made Me is a podcast about the literary heroines who shaped us and is a product of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System podcast network. OMG, Claudia got an A on a test and now everyone thinks she cheated! Well, by ‘everyone' we mean her teacher, her parents, and Mary Anne, who is just the WORST in this one. OMG, Mallory's dad lost his job! The family makes minor economies for two weeks, he becomes a degenerate in casual clothes for a day or two, and then everything is fine again and they don't even have to sell their ten-seater boat. PHEW. Meanwhile, Amanda Delaney has tragic wealth-related problems, and we are joined by a taciturn but lovable guest. On today's agenda: Aoife pulls off the ultimate BSC tribute; the text is compromised and we are not OK; Santa brings a depressing surprise; preteen murder ballads; workplace lingerie giveaways; intersectional school bullies; Mallory tries valiantly to make dibble happen; cinnamon allergy beauty hacks; the Drag Race to Tumblr slang pipeline; Mrs Pike becomes a big deal on Arpanet; a delicious limp salad; the Delaneys are too fancy for water safety; the true meaning of silly-billy-goo-goo; someone or other is a gobshite; Angie the tiny Olympian; the terrifying spectre of househusbandry; pizzaburger economics; eating oysters like a Homo Habilis; wish fulfilment monologues; Aunt Cecelia hits the mall. Our theme song is "The Incredible Shrinking Larry" by Matt Oakley & "Big Band Jingle A" is by Lobo Loco, both on the Free Music Archive. Egg baby trope time! Stoneybrook Middle School makes students couple up in Modern Living class and gives them an egg baby to take care of. Of course, Mary Anne and Logan are egg-parents to little Sammie, and whew! It is EXHAUSTING. Ann M. Martin warns readers off of both parenting and men in this treatise on how much of a pain in the ass it is to take care of babies and why most fathers suck. Emily gives us some nuggets, Esme looks into the history and research on this “learning tool,” and Anne looks into it in pop culture (so many egg babies!).
Episode 198 is more than a decade in the making! Alli and guest Colleen McKeegan went to high school (and were cheerleaders!) together and have been planning for Colleen's appearance on the pod since the day they started talking about becoming novelists at happy hour in midtown Manhattan. In this conversation about P.S. Longer Letter Later, it finally happens! This epistolary novel was published in 1998 and is a collaboration between two legends: Ann M. Martin and Paula Danziger. Tune in for discussions about the unique nature of a pen pal relationship, chosen family, a subversion of common ‘90s depictions of what's “normal,” and models for healthy conflict. Alli and Colleen also share memories from high school and discuss which of P.S. Longer Letter Later's narrators they relate to and why.Colleen McKeegan is a writer and editor who's held roles at Marie Claire (where her work was nominated for a National Magazine Award), Bloomberg, and Fortune among others. The Wild One is her debut novel. Follow her on Instagram (@clmckeegan) and Twitter (@cmleahey).
We're kicking summer off right with one of Angie's favorite summertime flicks from 1995: The Baby-Sitters Club, based on the popular book series by Ann M. Martin. Angie was a big fan of the series, but not so much babysitting in real life. She gave up her stint in the profession by age 16. So, we thought it would be fun to put Jeff, an inexperienced sitter, to the test (again). Angie presents him with a series of situational questions to see how good of a babysitter he'd make. Plus, we discuss what BSC members we identify most with. “Let's get bizzz-ayyy.” Ways to support us: Rate and review us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts Tell us fun things at 929-456-0304 or send us an email Find us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @TheC2RNetwork
We are gathered here today to celebrate the love of Kristy's mom and Watson… but also the love among the members of the BSC. On Episode 187, Alli and her guest explore Ann M. Martin's favorite Baby-Sitters Club installment, Kristy's Big Day. They chat about blended families, Kristy as a queer icon, traditional gender roles throughout the series, and the class dynamics we see between the Brewers and the Thomases. They also praise the club's entrepreneurial know-how and demand better pay for them! This is guest Alison Cochrun's first-ever experience reading a BSC title, which makes it extra fun.Alison Cochrun is the author of The Charm Offensive. It's a super special episode for us, folks, as we engage in a multi-media discussion of Erin's favorite children's series of all, all time: The Baby Sitter's Club. We read the fourth book, Mary Anne Saves the Day (1987), and then watched the thoroughly modernized adaptation available on Netflix now. And we loved ALLLLLLL of it. Ann M. Martin rules over a strong and powerful empire, and although we are beyond baby sitting age ourselves, we remain devoted followers. In three weeks: Superfudge, by Judy Blume. Happy Holidays, y'all!
Hollywood went deep into copaganda in July 1989 (Batman, Lethal Weapon 2, AND Turner & Hooch?!), and Ann M. Martin went even deeper into the Kubler-Ross model in this exquisitely realized portrayal of death and grief. Grab your weighted blanket for this one, kids, cause it's the Coping with Existential Despair Hour! YAY!Brooke and Kaykay discuss Claudia's attempt to find meaning in loss and their own experiences with the grieving process, with digressions on Kaykay's Cool Aunt status and a pitch for a gritty reboot of a Nickelodeon classic. But really: This is a heavier episode than usual, so you may want to plan your listening accordingly. And fear not: All will be brought into balance with extra fart and/or menstruation jokes in the next episode.Visit us at our website, and follow us on:FacebookTwitterInstagramSpotify
Happy holidays, friends! Thanksgiving (and other things) got in the way of our regular release schedule last week. We hope this recap of From the Mixed Up Files of Basil E. Frankweiler (1967) will help us make it up to you. Look out, though: this is another one where we get all sappy. Can you blame us? E.L. Konigsberg wrote a Newbery Medal-winner, here!Other topics of discussion: dressing appropriately and comfortably for the Thanksgiving feast, Sonny Bono's career-high appearance on The Love Boat, and totally unnecessary lab coats. Next time: The Baby-Sitters Club #4: Mary Anne Saves the Day (1987), by Ann M. Martin.
April 1989 was heavy: The Tiananmen Square Protests began in Beijing, the Central Park Jogger case threw New York City into a frenzy, and Ann M. Martin laid down some hard philosophical truths about the ephemeral nature of one's definition of "home." (Oh, you thought this was a lighthearted beach read? Au contraire!)Brooke and Kaykay discuss Dawn's journey through the stages of change, with digressions on California slander, commune food, and their personal encounter with the one and only Teen Witch. TOP THAT!Visit us at our website, and follow us on:FacebookTwitterInstagramSpotify
March 1989: When Madonna pissed off the Pope (and Pepsi), a fever dream opened the Oscars, and Ann M. Martin gave a civics lesson disguised as a book about pet-sitting.Brooke and Kaykay discuss the BSC's battle with interpersonal and structural power dynamics, with digressions on sleepover choreography, the hypnotic effects of '80s commercials, and what may be the QUEEREST! MOMENT! YET! in this book series.Visit us at our website, and follow us on:FacebookTwitterInstagramSpotify
February 1989: Paula Abdul went straight up the charts, two San Dimas youth went on an excellent adventure, and Ann M. Martin attempted to turn "mall" into a verb.Brooke and Kaykay discuss Mallory and the Arnold twins' pursuit of individuation via consumerism, with digressions on contraband cassette tapes, 80s mall madness, and (of course) trout fishing.Visit us at our website, and follow us on:FacebookTwitterInstagramSpotify
Jackie and Danielle are still in the summer camp swing with this week's 1995 classic, The Babysitters Club. Based on the popular Ann M. Martin book series, The Babysitters Club follows seven young girls as they attempt to take their babysitting business to new heights by starting a summer camp. Obviously, hijinks ensue and the girl's friendship and business are tested. The movie features future 90's stars Rachel Leigh Cook, Larisa Oleynik, Schuyler Fisk, Marla Sokoloff, Natanya Ross, Austin O'Brien, Bre Blair, Zelda Harris, Ashlee Turner, Christian Oliver, Tricia Joe, Stacy Linn Ramsower. The movie was also written by Dalene Young and directed by Melanie Mayron.1 --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nomorelatefees/support
