This week we go from Edinburgh, Scotland to Nashville, Tennessee, in the company of crime author Tariq Ashkanani.   Tariq's The Midnight King is a tricky, quasi-metafictional murder mystery about cursed manuscripts, familial secrets and the most heinous murders. It's also a love letter to the kind of occult-tinged American crime epics that both he and I grew up loving.   We talk about the challenge of writing about serial killing without exploitation, about the unstable boundary between crime and horror fiction, about the allure of Hannibal Lecter and the pressure of a good twist.   But mostly we just pay homage to the messy, bloodsoaked myth of America that inspired us so much over the years.   Enjoy!   Other books mentioned:   Welcome to Cooper (2021), by Tariq Ashkanani Red Dragon (1981), by Thomas Harris Galveston (2010), by Nic Pizzolatto The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper (2019), by Hallie Rubenhold The Devil All the Time (2011), by Donald Ray Pollock Uzumaki (2000), by Junji Ito Support Talking Scared on Patreon   Check out the Talking Scared Merch line – at VoidMerch   Come talk books on Bluesky @talkscaredpod.bsky.social  on Instagram/Threads, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. She has been counting women and children killed by violence since she began the Red Heart Campaign in 2015. In fact, we wouldn't know the names or the stories of many of these women, if it wasn't for Sherele and her work. This week, Angela Priestley sits down with Sherele to discuss how she does her work, why she does it, and most importantly, how we - as women, as voters and as humans - can make sure her work can continue into the future. The Australian Femicide Watch: https://australianfemicidewatch.org/If you or someone you know is experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, domestic, family or sexual violence, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732, text 0458 737 732 or visit 1800RESPECT.org.au for online chat and video call services. If you are concerned about your behaviour or use of violence, you can contact the Men's Referral Service on 1300 766 491 or visit http://www.ntv.org.au.Feeling worried or no good? Sonya Massey called the police to investigate a report of a suspected "prowler" on July 6 at 12:50 a.m. outside her home in Springfield, Illinois. The video, recorded by cameras worn by the officers, shows Massey, in her kitchen removing a pot of boiling water from the stove at their request. As she was doing so one of the officers instructed her to drop the pot, Massey said, "I'm sorry" and began to duck. Within seconds the sheriff's deputy made two steps toward the kitchen, yelled at her to drop the pot again, and began shooting. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/youandthelaw/support

Texas Prisoner Accused of Killing 22 Elderly Women Killed by Cellmate

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 26, 2023 8:14

Billy Chemirmir, the Texas prisoner accused of a string of murders targeting older women over a span of two years, died Tuesday while serving a life sentence, according to prison officials. Chemirmir, 50, who had been convicted last year for the murder of two women, was discovered lifeless in his prison cell located in a rural East Texas facility, reported Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesperson Hannah Haney. Haney stated that he was killed by his cellmate, who was also incarcerated for a previous murder conviction.  Chemirmir's death comes shortly after the entire Texas prison system, consisting of 100 prisons, was placed under an unusual statewide lockdown due to a surge in inmate-on-inmate homicides, believed to be related to drug activities, as previously reported by prison officials.  While details surrounding the incident remain limited, Haney refrained from disclosing the identity of Chemirmir's cellmate, the method used in the attack, or the circumstances leading to the killing.  Family members of the victims expressed a mix of shock and relief upon hearing the news of Chemirmir's death. Shannon Dion, the daughter of 92-year-old Doris Gleason, one of Chemirmir's alleged victims, conveyed her feelings at a news conference, saying, "My mother died in fear. This man did not have a peaceful passing. There's some relief in feeling that he didn't get off easily."  Initially, the deaths of these women in Dallas and neighboring cities were attributed to natural causes, despite concerns raised by family members about missing jewelry.  Chemirmir was apprehended after a 91-year-old woman survived an attack in 2018 and reported that a man had forcibly entered her apartment in an independent living community for seniors, attempted to smother her with a pillow, and stole her jewelry. Subsequently, police discovered Chemirmir with jewelry and cash in his possession the following day, having recently discarded a red jewelry box. Documents found in the box led them to the residence of Lu Thi Harris, 81, who was found deceased in her bedroom.  Following his arrest, authorities reevaluated deaths in the area, leading to an increase in charges against Chemirmir. Many of the victims' children were left perplexed by their mothers' deaths at the time since they were elderly but still in good health.  Chemirmir's first capital murder trial for Harris's slaying ended in a mistrial in Dallas County. He was later convicted in a retrial for Harris's death and subsequently convicted of a second murder in the case of Mary Brooks, 87.  After his second conviction, family members of Chemirmir's alleged victims confronted him in a Dallas courtroom. Ellen French House displayed two photos of her mother, Norma French, one when she was alive and the other after the 85-year-old had been killed, and said, "This is my beautiful mother... This is my mother after you pried her wedding ring off of her finger that she couldn't even get off."  Chemirmir had been indicted on 22 capital murder charges, with 13 in Dallas County and nine in neighboring Collin County. Following his convictions in Dallas County, the remaining 11 charges were dismissed, and prosecutors did not seek the death penalty in either county.  Maintaining his innocence throughout, Chemirmir was serving two life sentences without the possibility of parole at the Coffield Unit in Tennessee Colony, approximately 100 miles southeast of Dallas.  Phillip Hayes, Chemirmir's attorney, described his death as "just a horrible tragedy" and emphasized that "nobody deserves to be killed at any point, especially when you are in a place you're being held against your will."  Earlier this month, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice had initiated lockdown measures in response to "a rise in dangerous contraband and drug-related inmate homicides." The department reported 16 inmate-on-inmate homicides so far in 2023, compared to nine in 2021 and seven in 2022. The lockdowns limited inmate movement, external contact, and included intensified searches and enhanced drug testing protocols.  As of Tuesday, 75 units had lifted the lockdown measures, but 25 units, including the Coffield Unit where Chemirmir was housed, remained under lockdown. According to Haney, the Office of Inspector General is currently investigating Chemirmir's death. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In July in a span of 10 days, two women were tragically shot and killed in the capital city of Imphal in Manipur. Hangzo Donggaihching was a member of the Kuki-Zo community and lived alone in a small makeshift hut in the Lamphel area of Imphal. She was shot dead in broad daylight on July 6th in Kwakeithel, Imphal West. Hangzo Donggaihching had an intellectual disability and had no surviving family. Lucy Marim, belonging to the Maring Naga tribe, was abducted from Sawombung area and later found shot dead on July 15th in Lamlai, Imphal East district. The United Naga Council, representing Nagas in Manipur has issued a statement strongly condemning her killing. However this has not garnered much outrage from groups outside Manipur. In this episode, independent journalist Greeshma Kuthar interviews Dr. Aiswarya Rao, a disability rights activist from Tamil Nadu, who discusses the specific killings and the broader issue of ethnic violence. Greeshma also speaks with Professor Sonajharia Minz, the Vice-Chancellor of Sido Kanhu Murmu University in Jharkhand, about the urgent need for collective action to address the ongoing violence in Manipur and put an end to it before more lives are lost.See sunoindia.in/privacy-policy for privacy information.

We are paying tribute to the best of us this week. The booksellers. Keepers of the flame, beacons in the night, purveyors of meaning in a cold, dark universe … usually.Alice Slater used to be a member of that celebrated guild, now she's written about the light and dark side of the trade in her debut smash, Death of a Bookseller. It pulls back the curtain on an industry we all care deeply about, to reveal the obsession, madness and … murder(?) behind the chai lattes and instagram posts. In this conversation we cover a lot of ground… from the problems inherent in True Crime, book-fetishization, and the weird empathy we feel for serial killers' pets. Plus, I get to talk about my favourite things (see: everything mentioned so far) with someone who genuinely once worked in my local bookshop. This was a blast.Enjoy! Death of a Bookseller was published on April 25th by Hodder and ScarletOther books mentioned in this episode include:Savage Appetites: True Stories of Women, Crime and Obsession (2019), by Rachel MonroeThe Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper (2019), by Hallie RubenholdYou (2014), by Caroline KepnesGone Girl (2012), by Gillian FlynnThe Last House on Needless Street (2021), by Catriona WardThe Sluts (2004), by Dennis CooperThings Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke (2021), by Eric LaRoccaEcho (2022), by Thomas Olde Heuvelt Support Talking Scared on PatreonCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show

True crime is a solid part of our popular culture these days. Focus tends to fall on the perpetrator rather than the victim, though, something historian Hallie Rubenhold, author of excellent book The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper, wanted to challenge. And did! And continues to do! She chats to Mick about her podcast Bad Women, back for a second season. This season explores the rich and complex lives of the victims of Blitz killer, The Blackout Ripper, and looks at what wartime meant for Britain's women in terms of new opportunities and old-as-time danger. After one train vestibule too many, Abby Taylor got onboard with the Campaign for Family-Friendly Trains, and joins Jen this week to talk about why accessibility matters, and what train companies can do to make it easier for those of us with small people to get around. In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen recaps the week in women's sport, including a cracking bout between Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall, and joy for the Republic of Ireland's women's football team. In Rated or Dated, Hannah takes us back in time to the origins of the Bitches Be Crazy genre, as we revisit 1962's What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? It's the early morning of June the 26th, 1718 and in the basement of the Peter and Paul Fortress in St Petersburg, Russia, lies a young man. His face is covered in bruises, his back is bleeding, and his eyes are sunken holes in their sockets, wreathed in black. The door is flung open, and another man strides into the prison chamber. In his hand is a hard leather whip about three and a half feet long, ending in a beak-like hook.  He walks over to the prisoner, who closes his eyes and quietly sobs. He knows what's coming.  The prisoner is Tsarevich Alexei, heir to the Russian throne. His torturer is his own father, Tsar Peter the Great.   Peter the Great was one of the most bloody and brutal rulers in Russian history. Known for leading his own torture interrogations, and using forced labour to construct his architectural visions, his son is only one of thousands of people who will suffer at his hands during his reign. Yet he is remembered as one of Russia's greatest ever rulers. Creating a navy, a city, and being one of the first Tsars to travel Europe in 100 years, his love of science and learning saw him transform his antiquated realm into a European power of the modern age.   But given the high price paid by his people, his predisposition for violence, and how the future of his reign was cemented by torture, can he truly be seen as Peter ‘the Great' today?    Cast List:   Tony McMahon  A former BBC news producer, award short-listed author, print journalist and historian.   Hallie Rubenhold   A bestselling author, social historian and historical consultant for TV and film. In 1877, a young outpatient clerk named Arthur Conan Doyle began watching Dr. Bell's incredible powers of observation, deduction, and reasoning while dealing with patients. From something as simple as the color of the mud on a patients shoes Dr. Bell could deduce a patients occupation, where he or she lived, and which boat had ferried them that morning. As a writer, Conan Doyle was inspired by Dr. Bell's "method" and created a character that has become a household name, and one of the most popular detectives of all time. Dr. Bell was also a pioneer of forensic science and paved the way for what we now know as C.S.I. As well as helping countless patients throughout his lifetime, he was also called upon to assist police in many cases including the Jack the Ripper murders. This week's episode is for true crime enthusiasts. Every city has had murders that make the news, and Louisville is no different. Our guest this week, David Domine', adopted Louisville as his hometown and has a following here as an author, tour guide, and storyteller in the city. He has written a new book called A DARK ROOM IN GLITTER BALL CITY about a sensational murder that was discovered after a domestic disturbance in Old Louisville in 2010. The story includes drugs, drag queens, and maybe even the CIA. His book is true crime, but it also veers into memoir and history. And it introduces readers to quirky characters whose eccentricities are why we have a saying here to “Keep Louisville Weird.” His book is getting some attention. Publisher's Weekly gave it a starred review and Amazon named it as one of the top true crime reads of the season. In this episode, the second in their true crime arc, Marc and Kristina discuss the role of the victim in the true crime genre.  Historically, when the victim began to enter the narrative, authors and audiences tended to place the blame for their victimhood on their shoulders.  As time has gone on, authors, and especially podcasters, have tried to find ways to recenter the victim as an agent in the narrative.  In this episode, Marc and Kristina discuss this trend, the reasons why victim blaming may have happened at all, and whether or not there is a way for people to approach the victim's stories without "blaming" them at all.
