American Prohibition agent
POPULARITY

In this episode, we talk with Ray Franze author of ‘The Heights.' The Heights is a historical mob fiction novel based upon the early days a very real and powerful crew of Italians in Chicago Heights, Illinois that became one of the most powerful, but least well-known, crews in the Chicago Outfit (as well as nationally). Fox News Chicago has called The Heights “A masterful dive into mob history.” Buy the book: https://www.amazon.com/Heights-Ray-Franze/dp/1955058083 Blue Handle Publishing: https://www.bluehandlepublishing.com/ray-franze Connect on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theheightsnovel/ Connect on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@writerrayfranze Here is a brief synopsis of the book: “FALL IN LINE, OR FALL IN A GRAVE After 30 years of research and scouring 5,000 pages of FBI files, The Heights was born. Inspired by true events and racketeers who ruthlessly fought their way into Al Capone's inner circle and expanded organized crime across the American West. It's hard to believe Sal Liparello has survived long enough to enjoy a midday scotch on his California tomato farm. The sixty-something crime boss from Chicago Heights helped take out Sicilian gangs, advised Al Capone on some of his biggest moves, and rubbed elbows with the Kennedys, Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe - all while avoiding the likes of Eliot Ness and J. Edgar Hoover. But as he surveys the fruits of his labor, Sal also remembers the cost of staying above ground and out of prison. And all those decisions are about to catch up with him.” In the episode, we dive deep into the book and talk about: The characters and their backgrounds The process of mixing real history within a fictional novel following a single character The question of historical fiction versus non-fiction writing The writing process and getting published Weaving in real characters such as Al Capone, Tony Accardo, and even Eliot Ness Additionally, we dig deep into the real history behind ‘The Heights' to discuss the real-life counterparts of some of the characters within the books. We discuss the origins of the Chicago Heights crew and how they eventually joined forces with Al Capone to become a part of the larger Chicago Outfit in the 1920's and beyond. We also discuss their exploits and their potential part in planning the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Mentioned in this episode are: Francesco Lipperatti (also known by the name “Frank LaPorte”) Vincenzo Ameratti (also known by the name “Jimmy Emery”) Dominico Roberto (also known by the name “Dominic Roberto”) These three men were the core leaders of the Chicago Heights crew in the 1920's that murdered their way to the top of Chicago Heights, formed partnerships with Al Capone and eventually were brought into the Chicago Outfit under Capone. They ran bootlegging in what Eliot Ness dubbed “the second wettest city in America” behind Cicero, Illinois, and provided shooters and brains whenever Capone needed them. These three men ran Chicago Heights for the Outfit from the 1920's into the early 1970's before the crew was taken over by younger (and more violent) elements of the family. Yet, their history and relative importance in the national crime syndicate is relatively unknown. Additional source: https://www.myalcaponemuseum.com/id193.htm
In the 1930s, some of the poorest areas of Great Depression-era Cleveland, Ohio became the hunting ground for a vile, violent murderer. Unfortunately, despite the fact that this killer butchered around 12 individuals, his identity remains unknown. The Cleveland Torso Killer, also known as the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run, is one of history's most gruesome unidentified serial killers. But James Jessen Badal — an author who has written three comprehensive books on the murders — isn't so sure. According to Badal, famed lawman Eliot Ness — known for leading the Untouchables against Al Capone — may have cracked the killer's identity. In this episode, we'll discuss the case and the clues with Badal, and hear why he believes Ness may have actually solved the infamous case that so damaged his reputation. The Murder Sheet participates in the Amazon Associate program and earns money from qualifying purchases. We strongly recommend Badal's books. The Bulldog Detective, Law and Crime author series, Dr. Jeffrey D. Simon The Bulldog Detective: William J. Flynn and America's First War against the Mafia, Spies, and Terrorists Hardcover – January 16, 2024 by Jeffrey D. Simon (Author) America in the early twentieth century was rife with threats. Organized crime groups like the Mafia, German spies embedded behind enemy lines ahead of World War I, package bombs sent throughout the country, and the 1920 Wall Street bombing dominated headlines. Yet the story of the one man tasked with combating these threats has yet to be told. The Bulldog Detective: William J. Flynn and America's First War Against the Mafia, Spies, and Terrorists is the first book to tell the story of Flynn, the first government official to bring down the powerful Mafia, uncover a sophisticated German spy ring in the United States, and launch a formal war on terrorism on his way to becoming one of the most respected and effective law enforcement officials in American history. Long before Eliot Ness and the Untouchables went after Al Capone and the Italian mob in Chicago, Flynn dismantled the first Mafia family to exist in America. Next stop for the indefatigable crime fighter would be Chief of the Secret Service where he would set his crosshairs on the country's most notorious currency counterfeiters. Coined “the Bulldog” for his tenacity, Flynn's fame soared as he exposed Kaiser Germany's sophisticated spy and sabotage ring on the cusp of America's entry into World War I. As the Director of the Bureau of Investigation (the forerunner of the FBI), the Bulldog would devise the first counterterrorist strategy in U.S. history. In this riveting biography, author Jeffrey D. Simon brings to life the forgotten saga of one of America's greatest crime and terrorist fighters. Exquisitely researched, The Bulldog Detective finally uncovers the important legacy of this fascinating man who will now no longer be lost in history.

In this edition of Overlapping Dialogue, we make off with a load of fat greenbacks that turn out to be counterfeit junk with 1987's The Untouchables and 2009's Public Enemies. Though both films have generated healthy followings over the years, we take issue with their approaches to and executions of the crime genre, a medium we have particular passions for. Also, there's no Blue Plate Special this time but have no fear, we made a whole meal out of the cinematic dumpsters we're highlighting. Recording from The Lemon Tree Café & Market in Las Vegas. We start with learning about how Alan got into the film business, living in London, getting a job at Wide World of Sports, and becoming an on-air host for 25 years. Getting into his book: “Uncle Charlie Killed Dutch Schultz” starting with his father Lou and if he was connected to the mob? When did he know members of his family were mob related and learning who Waxey Gordon was?Dutch Schultz was into numbers rackets, how they would use apartments as offices, and the greed for money was the demise for Dutch. Uncle Charlie killed Dutch Schultz at the Palace Chophouse and received a life sentence but who was involved with him being caught. We talked about Murder Inc. with names such as Louis Lepke and Sammy Kass. Why was the murder of Irving Penn significant? The real-life story of Eliot Ness and how he was fictionalized in “The Untouchables”. Uncle George life in the mob and being connected to names such as Moe Dalitz, Meyer Lansky and The Cleveland Four Organization. Uncle George's role in the LV Skim and was part of the criminal interest in the Desert Inn & Stardust. A great mob story involving Tony Cornero which is a must listen, Alan being on the phone buying marijuana when the President of Israel interrupted with an emergency call, and the story of him having a pastrami sandwich with Meyer Lansky! Eliot Ness went to the grave in 1957 without ever convicting the Cleveland Torso Murderer. Decades later, his family would reveal a secret suspect hidden within his notes, that was too well-connected to be accused publicly. This episode originally aired in April 2019. Christopher and Eric kick off the Midwest Mayhem portion of their True Crime Movie Time Summer Film Festival with an all new true crime pairing devoted to two of the most mythologized figures in the history of American organized crime. Thanks to its snarky European producers, the documentary ELIOT NESS VS. AL CAPONE offers vicious commentary about the so-called land of the free. (To our Chicago based Party People, we beg your forgiveness in advance. We don't write the documentaries, we just serve them up.) But Eric was surprised by the film's fresh insights into the personality of the crusading Eliot Ness while Christopher struggled to keep track of which real life figures were being captured by its overwhelming flood of archival footage. It's all a set up for next week's discussion of the wildly popular Brian DePalma film THE UNTOUCHABLES, a cinematic exploration of the storied clash between these two men and modern day legends
In 1934, a man collecting driftwood along the Lake Erie shore found a human torso on the beach. No one could figure out what had happened. Over the next several years, more bodies were discovered. Eventually, a coroner assembled something he called the “Torso Clinic” to work on the case. It was made up of about 30 people – doctors, professors, police officers, and a young Prohibition agent named Eliot Ness. We're excited to announce Criminal Plus - our new membership program. First we continue our story in Chicago where Indy's musical appreciation switches to the Blues, while the adventures heat up with Eliot Ness and Ernest Hemingway. We then travel tp Princeton, NJ where Indy is attempting to persuade his girlfriend's father to take his Hot Rod to the Junior Prom. While getting repairs, Indy stumbles into an adventure involving a stolen Thomas Edison invention. Finally we travel to Petrograd where Indy has befriended a group of young Bolshevik students. After taking Indy to hear a speech by Vladimir Lenin, the Bolshevik's attempt to prematurely start a revolution.
In part two of our two part look at the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run, the murderer gets bolder and some suspects emerge, including one that Eliot Ness swore, to his dying day, was responsible. But with no one ever officially convicted of the crimes, we are left to examine the evidence and draw our own conclusions.
Few people realize that Cleveland had its own serial killer at the height of the Great Depression…a serial killer who was never caught…Dubbed “The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run” or “The Cleveland Torso Killer,” he didn't just kill; he dismembered his victims. Regardless of race or gender, his victims were often the most vulnerable, and most of his victims not identified. In this first part of our two part episode, we look at the start of the murders and the investigation, headed by none other than Eliot Ness.

This week I travel to Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland, Ohio. I sat down with Michael Williams who does brand coordination and marketing at GLBC. During this interview we learn about the oldest brewery in Ohio and how it came to be. We also talked about the history of the building as it pertained to Eliot Ness and the mysterious bullet holes that may or may not have been intended for Mr. Ness. We also discussed the 2023 beer release calendar that recently just came out which included a few new additions like a low cal watermelon wheat, a couple of new IPAs, a new stout, and the latest edition to the GLBC family which is a hard tea that is set to be released sometime in April. During the interview we tried some classics including: Dortmunder Gold, Conway's Irish Ale, Eliot Ness Amber Lager, Dank Demon DIPA, an experimental Hazy, and Barrel Aged Black Out Stout. It's holiday gift time! If you're not sure what to get the true crime aficionado in your life, never fear! Mind Over Murder has you covered!GIFT OF BOOKS:1) A Killer by Design: Murderers, Mindhunters, and My Quest to Decipher the Criminal Mind-- Ann Burgess and Steven Constantine. If you're a fan of David Fincher's colossal hit MINDHUNTER, you won't want to miss the story of the real-life Wendy Carr, the brilliant psychiatric nurse who worked alongside Robert Ressler, John Douglas, and the other pioneering FBI agents in Quantico's Behavioral Science Unit. Even if you think you're familiar with the early days of the BSU from Douglas and Olshaker's books, trust me, you don't know the half of it! This book is a treat for anyone who wants more on the development of profiling.PAIR THIS WITH: Any of the initial books from Douglas and Olshaker; a viewing of Fincher's MINDHUNTER; or the Audible presentation of the book, beautifully read by Gabra Zackman. We interviewed Ann and Steven about their book on Mind Over Murder on our episode from July 18, 2022.2) Frozen in Fear: A True Story of Surviving the Shadows of Death-- Jane Carson-Sandler.Jane is one of the surviving victims of the Golden State Killer and she is one tough-as-nails lady! This short memoir details her life both before and after the attack and discusses how she put her life back together to both survive and to thrive in spite of her trauma.PAIR THIS WITH: Michelle McNamara and Paul Haynes “I'll Be Gone in the Dark”; the HBO mini-series of the same name; XG Productions Audible Original “Evil Has a Name.”3) When a Killer Calls-- John Douglas and Mark Olshaker.I'm an unabashed John Douglas fan; everything he and Mark Olshaker have ever written lives somewhere on my true crime bookshelves. But this is by far the best of their work and that is really saying something! The kidnapping and murder of Shari Smith is horrifying, but even more so is the behavior of the offender. It is so audacious and cruel that it sounds like something from a movie. John's work on the case will break your heart… but it is the work of a profiler at the top of his game!PAIR THIS WITH: Anything this dynamic duo have previously written! You will never get a boring or poorly written book from these guys!We interviewed Mark Olshaker about this book on Mind Over Murder on February 14th and February 21st, 2022.4) Journey to the Center of the Mind Books 1-3-- James Fitzgerald.Grab a hot drink, snuggle under a warm blanket, and leave yourself plenty of time to binge! Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald's career as both a uniformed cop and then an FBI profiler is full of ups and downs, which he skillfully and entertainingly details in his books. Get all 3 books if you want the full and unabridged Fitz story, though book 3 is my favorite as that's where we learn all about the Unabomb case and linguistic profiling. Make sure you check out his website for books and other merch (www.jamesrfitzgerald.com) including autographed posters.PAIR THIS WITH: Fitz's podcast The Fitz Files (which features a cameo from Kristin); the original drama MANHUNT: UNABOMBER; and the XG Productions Audible original “Where the Devil Belongs.”We interviewed Fitz on Mind Over Murder about the Unabomber and his books on June 30 and July 7, 2022.5) ShadowMan: An Elusive Psycho Killer and the Birth of FBI Profiling-- Ron Franscell. The story of Howard Teten and Patrick Mullany's profile of the Susie Jaeger kidnapping case was all new to me, but it's an absolutely enthralling story. These are the two men who started the BSU—the profiling legends we know today (Rob Ressler, John Douglas, Judd Ray) learned the ropes from Teten and Mullaney. The unsub at the heart of this story is your classic “nice guy next door” and it will definitely make you reevaluate what you think you know about your neighbors! It's a pulse pounding read!PAIR THIS WITH: If you're in the mood for a history of the early days of the BSU, start here, progress to Ann Burgess's “A Killer by Design”, then move on to the earliest Douglas and Olshaker collabs “Mindhunter” and “Journey into Darkness.” Take time for Robert Ressler's book “Whoever Fights Monsters” as well.6) Madman in the Woods—Jamie Gehring. What was it like to live literally next door to Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber? To have him show up at your door and even have him over for dinner? Jamie Gehring could tell you. She lived next to him in Montana. If you ever wanted to know who Ted Kaczynski was and how he evolved into the Unabomber, Jamie's book will bring you as close as you'll ever come, short of having a conversation with him yourself. This is a stunner of a memoir. I can't recommend it enough.PAIR THIS WITH: Jim Fitzgerald's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE MIND, book 3; a viewing of MANHUNT: UNABOMBER; Audible original “Where the Devil Belongs”; the Audible version of this book, read by Jamie herself. We interviewed Jamie on Mind Over Murder on June 27th, 2022.7) Keeping On—Gemma Hoskins. You knew her and loved her on THE KEEPERS! But do you know the real Gemma Hoskins? You can by reading her book! Gemma's memoir is by turns funny, poignant, and insightful. There's plenty of info on Sister Cathy Cesnik's case and yes, there are some bombshells you won't want to miss!PAIR THIS WITH: A re-watch of THE KEEPERS! It's been a few years since it first aired, so it's more than time to give it another viewing! Pop some popcorn, grab a fuzzy blanket, and be prepared to give up a few hours of your life in a binge of epic proportions. We interviewed Gemma on Mind Over Murder on July 28th and August 4th.8. Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders—Kathryn Miles. This labor of love from Kate Miles is one of the best true crime reads in recent memory, tying together the murders of Julie Williams and Lollie Winans in the Shenandoah National Park with other missing and murdered women in Virginia. She discusses some compelling theories as to who may have murdered the women back in 1996 and sheds light on major issues within the NPS during that time period. It's thought-provoking and sensitive reporting. Highly recommended!PAIR THIS WITH: “The Cold Vanish” from Jon Billman (which we featured on last year's gift guide), which also explores disappearances and murders in national parks. We interviewed Kate on Mind Over Murder on May 16th and May 23rd of 2022.9) How to Catch a Killer and I Scream Man—Dr. Katherine Ramsland. We couldn't pick just one book out of Dr. Ramsland's whopping catalogue; you'll never get a bad book from this talented, astute, and prolific writer. But we opted for her two most recent releases—How to Catch a Killer is about the hunt for and capture of the world's most notorious serial killers including Rodney Alcala (the Dating Game killer); GSK; Aileen Wuoronos; and many more. This is part of the Profiles in Crime series, so if you love this one, there's more to come. And we couldn't neglect Dr. Ramsland's fiction debut … I Scream Man, featuring protagonist Annie Hunter who seems to be quite a bit like the good doctor herself! It's an excellent first book in a new series and we are looking forward to more! Check out all of Dr. Ramsland's books at www.katherineramsland.net.PAIR THIS WITH: Any of her 70 other books! I recommend the two that tie in to CSI and CRIMINAL MINDS.We interviewed Dr. Ramsland on Mind Over Murder on July 4 and July 11 of 2022.10) The Babysitter—Liza Rodman.Imagine, if you will, learning that your beloved childhood babysitter was a sadistic psychopath who was murdering women when he wasn't watching you. That's precisely what happened to Liza Rodman when she learned that Tony Costa, handyman and her childhood babysitter, was the ghoul responsible for murdering and dismembering four women in the Truro woods near Provincetown. The premise on its own is enough to make your skin crawl … learning what Tony Costa was actually doing made me want to sleep with the lights on! This pairs perfectly with HELLTOWN by Casey Sherman, which covers Tony Costa's crimes.PAIR THIS WITH: HELLTOWN, below!11) Helltown—Casey Sherman.Liza Rodman's childhood babysitter, Tony Costa, was a horrific serial killer who haunted the Cape Cod and Provincetown area, murdering and dismembering women. His horrific crimes and his court case are covered expertly in the book. Also explored is the pull the case had over two enigmatic local writers—Kurt Vonnegut and Normal Mailer. This meticulously researched and brilliantly crafted book was one of my favorite true crime reads of this year.PAIR THIS WITH: THE BABYSITTER, above! We interviewed Casey on Mind Over Murder on September 19th 202212) American Demon—Daniel Stashower. There's so much more to Eliot Ness than his time with the Untouchables. This deep dive into Ness's time in Cleveland and his work trying to solve the series of brutal slayings by the Butcher of Kingsbury Run is masterful. Stashower has a wonderful touch with historical crimes … they seem to come alive on the page. The book is meticulously researched, gorgeously written, and will keep you turning pages.PAIR THIS WITH: THE BEAUTIFUL CIGAR GIRL, Stashower's book about the murder of Mary Rogers and Edgar Allan Poe's involvement in it.We interviewed Dan on Mind Over Murder on October 31st, 2022.GIFTS OF SERVICE:1) You can help to solve a crime in one of two ways by going to DNASolves.com. You can either help to fund a case (or two or three) in any dollar amount, large or small, or you can follow the instructions on how to provide your own DNA to help grow the searchable law enforcement database.2) We know you love the work that Othram does as much as we do! The Cleveland Torso Murders, brought to you by Alaina!!! This is definitely a gnarly case that dates back to the 1930s when torsos started popping up left and right. Many bodies were never identified and to this day the identity of the Mad Butcher is unknown. Part 1 will cover the first six bodies to turn up in the area of Kingsbury Run and will touch upon the arrival of a fancy new inspector in town to lead the case. A. Brad Schwartz, who entertained us with Eliot Ness stories in back-to-back episodes earlier this year, returns to talk about the notorious October 30, 1938 radio broadcast of War of the Worlds, directed by Orson Wells. The young and up-and-coming Orson Wells shocked and frightened listeners who tuned in late to his radio adaptation of H.G. Wells' science fiction novel, which tells the story of an invasion of Earth by tentacled aliens. The broadcast was delivered in a news story style so realistic that those who weren't aware it was a Mercury Theater production panicked. The extent and nature of the panic, however, is disputed, and my guest sets the record straight (as best as primary sources allow) about what really happened. His book is called "Broadcast Hysteria: Orson Welles's War of the Worlds and the Art of Fake News", and more information about his work can be found here: https://abradschwartz.com/
Boston had its Strangler. California had the Zodiac Killer. And in the depths of the Great Depression, Cleveland had the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run.On September 5th, 1934, a young beachcomber made a gruesome discovery on the shores of Cleveland's Lake Erie: the lower half of a female torso, neatly severed at the waist. The victim, dubbed “The Lady of the Lake,” was only the first of a butcher's dozen. Over the next four years, twelve more bodies would be scattered across the city. The bodies were dismembered with surgical precision and drained of blood. Some were beheaded while still alive.Terror gripped the city. Amid the growing uproar, Cleveland's besieged mayor turned to his newly-appointed director of public safety: Eliot Ness. Ness had come to Cleveland fresh from his headline-grabbing exploits in Chicago, where he and his band of “Untouchables” led the frontline assault on Al Capone's bootlegging empire. Now he would confront a case that would redefine his storied career.Award-winning author Daniel Stashower shines a fresh light on one of the most notorious puzzles in the annals of crime, and uncovers the gripping story of Ness's hunt for a sadistic killer who was as brilliant as he was cool and composed, a mastermind who was able to hide in plain sight. American Demon reconstructs this ultimate battle of wits between a hero and a madman. AMERICAN DEMON: Eliot Ness and the Hunt for America's Jack The Ripper-Daniel Stashower

My conversation about the life of Eliot Ness continues with A. Brad Schwartz. After years battling The Outfit in Chicago, Ness was hired as Director of Public Safety in Cleveland, Ohio. Tasked with ridding the city of crime and corruption, he found himself confronted by a serial killer nicknamed "The Mad Butcher", aka "The Cleveland Torso Murderer," who would ultimately dismember and decapitate at least twelve people.A. Brad Schwartz, along with co-author Max Allan Collins, wrote "Eliot Ness and the Mad Butcher: Hunting a Serial Killer at the Dawn of Modern Criminology". More information about the authors can be found here: https://abradschwartz.com/ and http://maxallancollins.com/blog/Information on the Eliot Ness festival in Coudersport, PA can be found here: https://eliotnessfest.com/
Throughout the 1920s Chicago was a cesspool of corruption and violence, due in large part to the obscene amounts of money being made through the illegal manufacture, transportation and sale of alcohol. Much of the business was being done by The Outfit, led by the charming and publicity hungry Al Capone, who viciously knocked off his competitors at the slightest provocation. To combat The Outfit, the federal government chose Eliot Ness, a reserved but ambitious twenty-seven-year-old Prohibition agent to lead his "Untouchables" against Al Capone's criminal empire. Together they gathered important evidence to cripple Capone's lucrative booze business. My guest is A. Brad Schwartz, who along with co-author Max Allan Collins wrote the critically acclaimed "Scarface and the Untouchable: Al Capone, Eliot Ness, and the Battle for Chicago". He talks about how Eliot Ness and Al Capone climbed the ranks of their respective professions, their Chicago careers ultimately culminating with the trial and imprisonment of Capone. He also breaks some long-standing myths about Eliot Ness and his true role in Capone's demise as a gangland boss.
