In this episode, Dr. Jeremy Perigo hosts Revd. Associate Professor Dr. Daniel Thornton of Alphacrucis University College in Australia. Dr. Thornton is an ordained minister, worship leader, musician, educator, and theologian with significant experience in production, theater, and composition.   Together, they discuss Thornton's scholarly research into modern Christian worship songs, which utilizes music semiology focused on texts, writers, and the audience to analyze congregational songs. Beyond the lyrical theology, hear them unpack topics such as what makes a song popular, meaning making, the influence of the industry and the local church, the future of the genre, trends in novelty and traditionalism, and how YouTube influences Christian worship. The discussion concludes with pastoral guidance and encouragement for those serving in local churches.

The Government Digital Service (GDS) was set up to modernise public service delivery in the UK. Has it been successful? And what can other organisations learn from this experience? Former Head of GDS, Mike Bracken, co-author of ‘Digital Transformation at Scale: Why the Strategy Is Delivery’, discussed these questions. He was joined by Baroness Martha Lane-Fox, former UK Government Digital Champion, and Ian Watmore, First Civil Service Commissioner and Former Permanent Secretary. In times of emergency, the public looks to government to keep them safe, making responding to crises an important role for government. Managing a crisis is a complex operation that requires co-ordination between multiple groups and organisations, including central government, local government and the voluntary sector. The Institute for Government and British Red Cross hosted panel discussion to consider these issues. In particular: How does government in the UK prepare for crises and learn from them? How can government work better with the voluntary sector both during and after a crisis? To discuss these issues, our panel included: Mike Adamson, Chief Executive Officer, British Red Cross Zina Etheridge, Chief Executive for the London Borough of Haringey and Former Executive Director for Civil Service Reform in the Cabinet Office Bruce Mann, Former Director of the Civil Contingencies Secretariat at the Cabinet Office The event was chaired by Daniel Thornton, Programme Director at the Institute for Government.

The Government’s transformation strategy set out a vision for modernising public services using digital technology. But does it go far enough? How can internet-enabled Government transform public services? 'Better Public Services: A Manifesto' argues that previous efforts to use technology to improve public services have failed, and that new operating models are needed which draw upon the best practices of digital organisations. To present the key proposals from their new collaboratively developed manifesto, the IfG welcomed Dr Mark Thompson, Senior Lecturer in Information Systems at Cambridge Judge Business School and Strategy Director, Methods Group, and Dr Jerry Fishenden, Co-Founder and Principal, Stance Global and Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey. Lesley Cowley OBE, Chair of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and Companies House, responded. The event was chaired by Daniel Thornton, Programme Director at the Institute.
