Episode 6. Eyal Shifroni is among the most senior Iyengar Yoga teachers in Israel. His journey in Iyengar Yoga began in 1982, and since then, he has been studying, teaching, and writing about the Iyengar method. In 1988, he went to Pune for the first time, where he studied directly from Yogacharya BKS Iyengar. Eyal is active in the Iyengar Yoga Association of Israel. He conducts teacher training courses and actively participates in the certification process. He has also written 8 books on Iyengar Yoga. His first book, “A Chair for Yoga,” was internationally acclaimed, and is also the reason why some practitioners from the Iyengar Yoga community affectionately call him a "Chairman". His recent book, “Yoga in Nature and Natural Props for Yoga,” is a personal exploration of the Yoga asana practice with natural props. Eyal has also translated two of B.K.S. Iyengar's books into Hebrew: "The Tree of Yoga" and "Light on Pranayama." In this episode of the podcast, we explore the three major practices that define any spiritual path; why the world leaders should study Yoga; and how to find the "natural Yoga props" and use them in your practice. Eyal also shares his impressions from his first visit to Pune, and what Svadhyaya, the study of the Self, means personally for him. The focused diligent practice of Yoga is call Abhyasa and within that, we are practicing Vairagya, which is letting go of sensory perception and observation. It becomes a detachment to what is observed or seen arising as a result of practice. The goal of practicing Yoga is to reach a state of Nirodha. Nirodha is to stop, restrain, still, the removal and the cessation of.Kaya Nirodha – Physical StillnessPrana Nirodha – Energetic StillnessCitta Vritti Nirodha – Mental StillnessWhat happens when stillness is achieved? The self rests within itself. The “I-ness” of you recognised itself. Samadhi is a separation from Prakriti and wakens to it as Purusha.What happens when stillness isn't achieved? Well, the witness miss-identifies with the thoughts, emotions, images, sensations and other mind-stuff. Prakriti. Patanjali has two solutions:Kriya Yoga – Tapas, SvaDhyaya, Isvara Pranidhana or Ashtanga Yoga – Yamas, Niyamas, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, SamadhiKriya Yoga is said to be for those who are not seeking the highest Samadhi. Ashtanga Yoga is said to be for those seeking full liberation from the suffering of existence. Either way, the purpose is to practice and minimise the Kleshas – Mental Emotional Afflictions which are said to be at the root of why we suffer and why we are subjected to ongoing Karmic action or reaction.Avidya – IgnoranceAsmita – EgotismRaga – RagaDvesa – Aversion, resistance Abinivesha – Fear of loss, change and deathOur job is to develop our Viveka, discernment to recognise our own ignorance of the wandering mind (Avidya). How we misidentify with being more than, less than, or stuck in a limited unhealthy ego self (Asmita). To wake up to craving, yearning and chasing something more pleasurable (Raga). Or to what we are avoiding or resisting (Dvesa). And ultimately what we are truly afraid of (Abinivesha).This week we will focus on Nirodha to observe the unnecessary movements we take with the physical, energetic and mental bodies. Looking into why we fidget, move, tremble, itch, and notice our wandering mind. The last few week of practices focusing on the Elements and the Doshas has brought us to take a closer look at our vital energy called Prana. Like a candle in a pot, we can draw on the Gheranda Samhita for a deeper understanding of how we practice. Using the object as a representation of our embodiment, the vessel is our body that holds the flame, wax and light.Prana – FlameTejas – Light emanating Ojas – resource that fuels the flamePrana is linked to Vata Dosha as it is the life force that stimulates and moves the other two Doshas. Ojas is linked to Kapha Dosha as it fuels the life force with its nutrient rich wax through our diet, rest and care. Tejas is linked to Pitta Dosha which shows our radiance, our energetic expression, our charisma.In the Gheranda Samhita it states the 5 Stages of Prana.ActivationChurnConsolidateIgniteDirectInspired by a Buddhist teaching on the embodiment of our life force, they see issues with the human condition as four vessels that we are consistently working on like potters; Closed Vessel, Dirty Vessel, Tilted Vessel, Leaky Vessel. We become the Yogi potter as we practice to mend, re-shape, clean out and repair as we put ourselves in the kiln of our Yoga practice. The desired heat in practice is Tapas, the heat for positive change. As we understand ourselves more, Svadhyaya, which vessel we identify with and bespoke our practice to promote healing, to inspire ourselves and transform. So our practice is one to first activate, then churn the Prana around unblocking and dissolving obstructions. With a stronger body and control of the Bandhas, we can consolidate the Prana, then ignite the Prana to burn brighter and direct it to either higher states of consciousness or our duties and responsibilities in our day as a result of practice.Closed/Upside Down VesselUnable to hold content or receive.Closed mind and heart. Can't communicate. Not open to hearing or looking at source of problem.Ignorant of themselves and how they affect others.Dirty VesselDisturbed by physical, emotional and energetic toxicity.Symbolic of prior conditioning of past experiences – Samskaras – which interferes with one's ability to see, think and act clearly.Whatever is put into vessel it gets contaminated. Tilted VesselCan't fill to capacity. Distorted or tilted view of themselves and others.Blame themselves or others for current situation.Decreased ability to take in the teaching that might help them. Leaky VesselLet's valuable content escape. Now obviously I am just skimming the surface with this podcast.  The philosophy that holds the foundation of the yoga practice is everything.  We cannot hold a “steady comfortable pose” if we are scattered in the mind. If are spewing resentment instead of gratitude. If are not upholding the truth that lives in our own hearts.   The (8) Limbs of Yoga are powerful benchmarks that hold me to my truth every single day. The Yamas and the Niyamas spell out the 10 “code of ethics” are valuable for an awakened existence.   Yamas are the attitudes towards others and the world around you. Ahimsa or non-violence: Compassion for all living things Satya or truthfulness: Commitment to the truth Asteya or non-stealing: Not taking anything that has not been freely givenBramacharya or non-lust: Merging with the One Aparigraha or non-possessiveness:  Non grasping     Niyamas are how you treat yourself or your attitude towards yourself. Saucha - cleanliness Santosha - contentment  Tapas - burning passion Svadhyaya - study of the sacred text and of one's self Isvarapranidhama - Celebration of the Divine.   These principles are the backbone of this practice. 211: Früher bin ich regelrecht durch mein Leben gestürzt - habe meine To-Do´s abgearbeitet und mich vor allem durch mein Tun gespürt. Hab ich viel geschafft, war ich zufrieden mit mir. Vielleicht kennst Du das auch aus Deinem Leben. Du bist im Funktionier-Modus unterwegs, reagierst und handelst blind, unbewusst, reaktionär, gespeist aus der Quelle von Deinen Erfahrungen, Deinen Mustern und Prägungen. Und dieses unbewusstes Verhalten hält Dich in Deiner "Und-täglich-grüßt-das-Murmeltier-Schleife" und Du hast das Gefühl, es gibt kein Entrinnen. Genau so ging es mir auch. Erst als mich der Stress im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes zu Fall gebracht hatte und ich für Monate rein körperlich gar nicht mehr funktionieren konnte, begann ich, mich selbst tief zu reflektieren. In der Yoga-Philosophie gibt es ein wunderbares Wort dafür: Svadhyaya, das bedeutet, sich selbst zu studieren, zu beobachten und dadurch Zugang zum eigenen inneren Kern zu erlangen. Sva bedeutet deine Seele, dein Selbst. Adhyaya bedeutet Studium. Es geht bei Svadhyaya also um nichts weniger als die Kunst der Selbsterforschung. Das heißt jedoch nicht, sich ständig wie ein Brummkreisel um sich selbst zu drehen und permanente Selbstbeschau zu betreiben. Für mich bedeutet es, immer wieder innezuhalten, mich und mein Handeln zu reflektieren und abzugleichen, ob ich noch auf dem für mich richtigen Pfad bin. Mein eigener LifeCompass ist dabei mein roter Faden, an dem ich mich orientieren kann. Und natürlich bedeutet Selbstreflexion: Dir die richtigen Fragen zu stellen!! Das bringt Dich im Leben wie eine Rakete

Niyama „Svadhyaya“, was übersetzt so viel heißt wie „das Selbst studieren“, „Selbstreflexion“ oder „über uns selbst zu meditieren“. Ein traditioneller Weg dahin ist das Lesen und Studieren von spirituellen Texten. Dadurch wird unserer Lebensweise, unserem Sein und unserer Seele ein Spiegel vorgehalten und wir können uns besser kennen und verstehen lernen. Aber auch moderne Methoden der Selbstreflexion sind Ausdruck der Praxis von Svadhyaya wie z. B. Tagebuch schreiben, Coaching, Therapie und Heilungsarbeit. Diese innere Arbeit dient der Selbstkenntnis und Selbstreflexion. Uns selbst und unseren Geist in der Tiefe verstehen und kennenzulernen, ist die Basis und das Ziel des Yoga. Svadhyaya - Selbststudium kann auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen stattfinden. Auf der Ebene des Geistes, indem wir uns mit dem Inhalt und der Qualität unseres Geistes beschäftigen: Was ist der Zustand meines Geistes? Wie ist die Qualität meiner Gedanken? - Distanz zu unserem Geist zu gewinnen und den Geist zu objektifizieren ist Ziel der Yogapraxis. In this episode, we chat about the 8 limbs of Yoga by Patanjali as defined in his yoga sutras. Yoga is not all about the tree pose or downward-facing dog, it's about life.In relation to this, listen to Episode 256: The 5 levels of the mind – The Yoga Philosophy Series and also Episode 255: How to surrender, let go and trust or Ishvara Pranidhana – The Yoga Philosophy Series.This is what we spoke aboutYamas are kind of like moral lines and how you show up in life. Ahimsa is non-violence or kindness. Satya is truthfulness and honesty. Asteya is non-stealing. Brahmacharya is celibacy and loyalty. Aparigraha is detachment.Niyama is more of a way you are inside. Shaucha is more like cleanliness or detoxification of our thoughts. Santosha is contentment and self-acceptance. Tapas is devotion, dedication and discipline. Svadhyaya is self-study and self-awareness. Ishvarapranidhana is the practice of surrendering and letting go.Asana is the postures and the poses. Traditionally, there was one Asana and that was sitting cross-legged to meditate and breathe. Then, the ancient yogis continued to create poses in order to sit for longer periods of time with less discomfort.Pranayama can be translated to 'life force control'. Some people call it breathwork. Pratyahara is sense withdrawal as in closing your eyes or blocking your ears.Dharana is focusing or maintaining the thoughts and it's like the beginning of meditation.Dhyana is when you're truly meditating and nothing can interrupt you.Samadhi is when we're in Savasana lying on the ground in full surrender.
