The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 395: Anticolonial Philosophy & Yoga with Shyam Ranganathan Description: Yoga philosophy can sometimes feel overwhelming, inapplicable to the modern problems we face today, or just too abstract. Dr. Shyam Ranganathan, a repeat guest on the podcast, has a gift for breaking philosophy down in a way that we can relate to. Dr. Shyam Ranganathan is a philosopher, author, researcher, and leading voice in anti-colonial philosophy, as well as the founder of the Yoga Philosophy Institute. He specializes in the study and translation of philosophy, especially South Asian philosophy and Yoga. In his recent book, Yoga — AntiColonial Philosophy, Shyam explores yoga as a decolonial tradition and how we can reconnect to that legacy in our modern practice. In this episode, Shyam explains how colonialism shows up even in yoga philosophy, and how we can apply the practice of yoga and yoga philosophy to the many social justice issues we face in the world. He shares more about Ishvara Pranidhana (devotion to sovereignty), samskaras (rituals and practices), and how we might apply them to our daily lives to take back agency and practice yogic behavior. Tune into this conversation if you are seeking to be inspired by how philosophy can be a tool for liberation. Key Takeaways: [2:04] Shannon gives a shout-out to sponsor, OfferingTree. [3:08] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Dr. Shyam Ranganathan. [6:20] What does Shyam do and who does he do it for? [8:06] How did Shyam choose the title of his book, Yoga — AntiColonial Philosophy? [9:27] Why is it that yoga philosophy does not often give a platform to the voices of South Asian yoga teachers and authors? [13:35] Shyam reflects on how education is not really about learning but about training people to follow instructions. [16:39] How does the practice of yoga and yoga philosophy apply to the many social justice issues we are facing in the world? [21:40] Shyam explains the concept of Ishvara Pranidhana (devotion to sovereignty) in more concrete terms with some examples. [29:55] Shyam shares how we can take back and redeploy our agency instead of getting stuck in loops and patterns. [31:58] Shannon pops in to give a shout-out of thanks to OfferingTree. [33:25] Simply practicing yoga is the easiest way to disrupt the harm of colonialism. [34:47] Shannon and Shyam discuss how challenging certain laws may be a part of resisting colonialism and is yogic behavior. [39:47] Shyam explains what he means by "the real philosophical practice is what one does where one already is in relationship to the people that are already in one's life." [44:51] What is a practice that can be a first baby step for someone who has not explored much of yoga philosophy? [46:57] What might the first moment of conscious thought look like when we are showing up as an ally for ourselves? Shyam talks about what the practice of yoga can look like in our daily lives. "What we call education, especially in the West, is not really education. It's geared to getting us to follow instructions." "Every kind of bigotry or small-mindedness is part of just not being free from those past experiences." "What happens is we don't see our agency when we're in these patterns and loops because our agency is hidden by these patterns, but our agency is what's powering it. So we have to find a way to redeploy our agency." "You can't be working on your autonomy and also being colonized at the same time."

What's really keeping you stuck—fear of regret or fear of change? In this powerful episode, the emotional journey of letting go reaches its final stage. It explores the tension between attachment and freedom, and regret versus relief—those final moments of decision when you're standing at a crossroads.Attachment feels safe because it's familiar, even when it's no longer helping us grow. Freedom feels light and open but can be scary because it invites change and uncertainty. When we let go—whether of a role, a relationship, or a routine—we often fear regret. But what usually follows is a sense of relief, clarity, and renewed energy. This episode combines insights from neuroscience and yoga philosophy, especially Aparigraha (non-attachment) and Ishvarapranidhana (surrender to something greater), offering real tools to navigate the fear of change. You'll be invited to reflect on what you're clinging to, and what you might gain by letting it go—even if it's uncomfortable at first.Let this episode be the gentle push you need to move toward more space, more ease, and more self-trust.Episode Chapters:00:00:00 Introduction00:02:20 Attachment vs. Freedom00:05:29 Nervous System and Change00:08:43 Yogic Lens: Aparigraha00:10:47 Letting Go as a Life Practice00:14:24 Living in the Present00:18:53 Fear of Regret vs. Relief00:23:36 Svadhyaya & Self-Study00:25:06 Ishvarapranidhana: Trust in the Unknown00:26:26 Practice and Mantra00:28:00 Conscious Decision Making00:29:48 Closing Reflections—-------—-------—-

What if your pride is holding you back from growing into who you're meant to become? This episode explores the emotional tug-of-war between pride and humility—and how these internal forces show up when we're faced with tough decisions, like whether to keep pushing forward or finally let go.Pride can give us confidence, but it can also isolate us, especially when it turns into fear of failure or needing to “look strong.” Humility, on the other hand, isn't about weakness—it's about being honest with ourselves, even when it's uncomfortable. We also dive into identity vs. disorientation—what happens when we let go of a role or relationship that once defined us. It can feel like losing a part of who we are, but it's often the first step toward finding clarity and creating something new. With reflections from yoga philosophy and neuroscience, this episode invites you to slow down, get real with yourself, and ask the hard questions—so you can meet the version of you that's ready to emerge.Episode Chapters:00:00:00 Introduction00:01:33 Pride vs. Humility00:05:52 Neuroscience and Pride00:07:02 Yogic Lens: Aparigraha and Ishvarapranidhana00:08:07 Reflection Practice00:08:51 Identity vs. Disorientation00:10:13 Ego Death and Freedom00:10:52 Self-Inquiry and Svadhyaya00:14:15 Mantra: I Am Becoming00:14:24 Integration and Reflection00:16:23 Preview of Next Episode—-------—-------—-

Why is it so hard to admit when we're wrong? Why does vulnerability feel so uncomfortable? This episode explores the deep connection between ego, pride, shame, and the fear of being seen. Michael shares insights on why people struggle to admit mistakes, how societal norms shape our behaviors, and how the nervous system reacts to feelings of embarrassment or defensiveness. From a yogic perspective, concepts like Aparigraha (non-attachment), Svadhyaya (self-study), and Ishvara Pranidhana (surrendering the ego) offer tools to help navigate these emotions. The episode also dives into neuroscience, explaining how the brain's fear response can hijack our ability to stay open and present. By understanding these mechanisms, we can learn to shift our mindset, embrace humility, and create more meaningful connections. If you've ever struggled with admitting fault, felt the need to "save face," or wanted to break free from the fear of being wrong, this episode offers valuable insights and practical tools for personal growth and self-acceptance.Episode Chapters:00:00:00 Introduction00:02:00 Why We Struggle to Admit When We're Wrong00:06:00 The Role of Ego and Pride in Defensiveness00:10:00 How Shame and Embarrassment Affect Us00:14:00 The Nervous System's Response to Vulnerability00:18:00 Why We Fear Being Seen and Making Mistakes00:22:00 The Hidden Costs of Always Being Right00:27:00 Yogic Perspectives on Letting Go of Ego00:31:00 Practical Tools for Embracing Humility and Growth00:35:00 Closing Thoughts and Reflections—-------—-------—-Michael Henri's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michaelyoga.pt/ Going Pro Yoga's Instagram: https://www.instagram/com/goingproyoga/—-------—-------—-Other Mentions:Ep# 112: The Nervous System and The Polyvagal Theory—-------—-------—Tags: ego, vulnerability, pride, shame, embarrassment, fear of being wrong, authenticity, yoga philosophy, neuroscience, nervous system, self-acceptance, self-growth, personal development, mindfulness, emotional intelligence, admitting mistakes, humility, self-reflection, letting go

In this thought-provoking episode of the Finding Harmony Podcast, Harmony Slater and Russell Case sit down with philosophical scholar and teacher, Dr. Shyam Ranganathan, to explore the deeper aspects of yoga philosophy, ethics, and autonomy. Dr. Ranganathan dives into the true purpose of yoga as a tool for independence, and how the practice has been shaped—and sometimes distorted—by colonial and cultural influences. Listeners will gain valuable insights into the roots of yoga, understanding how devotion to sovereignty, through practices like Ishvara Pranidhana, leads to Kaivalya, a state of autonomy. Dr. Ranganathan also touches on the challenges of decolonizing yoga, the philosophical lens necessary for true yoga practice, and the importance of questioning the cultural baggage that modern yoga carries. Dr. Ranganathan's reflections on the Yoga Sutras, the role of language, and how philosophy intertwines with meditation will inspire anyone looking to deepen their understanding of yoga beyond physical asana. This episode is a must-listen for both seasoned practitioners and those new to the philosophy of yoga. Key Topics Discussed: Decolonizing yoga and returning to its philosophical roots The ethical and philosophical dimensions of yoga practice The real meaning behind Ishvara Pranidhana and Kaivalya Breaking free from the constraints of past habits (Tapas) The intersection of personal freedom and yoga philosophy How colonization has shaped modern yoga practices Connect with Dr. Shyam Ranganathan: https://www.shyam-ranganathan.info/ Connect with Us (We love to hear from you!) 149: Zum Abschluss der Niyama-Reihe auf „YOGA BEYOND THE ASANA“ schauen wir uns in dieser Folge das 5. The last guiding principle within the philosophy of yoga is Ishvara Pranidhana which speaks of surrendering and trusting the process or a higher being. We have learned that when we show for oneself on a daily basis while reflecting upon and observing oneself to give our best… we the let go and trust the process. Spirituality is one tool part of our multi dimensional being and allows us to believe in something greater than oneself, i.e. universe, spirit, source or god. It's upon oneself to choose to do so. When we have this trust in our journey, process and life we are our experiences merely as lessons turning into blessings. In this episode, we chat about the 8 limbs of Yoga by Patanjali as defined in his yoga sutras. Yoga is not all about the tree pose or downward-facing dog, it's about life.In relation to this, listen to Episode 256: The 5 levels of the mind – The Yoga Philosophy Series and also Episode 255: How to surrender, let go and trust or Ishvara Pranidhana – The Yoga Philosophy Series. This is what we spoke aboutYamas are kind of like moral lines and how you show up in life. Ahimsa is non-violence or kindness. Satya is truthfulness and honesty. Asteya is non-stealing. Brahmacharya is celibacy and loyalty. Aparigraha is detachment.Niyama is more of a way you are inside. Shaucha is more like cleanliness or detoxification of our thoughts. Santosha is contentment and self-acceptance. Tapas is devotion, dedication and discipline. Svadhyaya is self-study and self-awareness. Ishvarapranidhana is the practice of surrendering and letting go.Asana is the postures and the poses. Traditionally, there was one Asana and that was sitting cross-legged to meditate and breathe. Then, the ancient yogis continued to create poses in order to sit for longer periods of time with less discomfort.Pranayama can be translated to 'life force control'. Some people call it breathwork. Pratyahara is sense withdrawal as in closing your eyes or blocking your ears.Dharana is focusing or maintaining the thoughts and it's like the beginning of meditation.Dhyana is when you're truly meditating and nothing can interrupt you.Samadhi is when we're in Savasana lying on the ground in full surrender. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 269: Yoga Philosophy & Colonialism with Shyam Ranganathan Description: As yoga teachers, we learn a little bit about yoga philosophy in our YTTs, but yoga philosophy is much more than just the 8 limbs, or the brief summary we may have come across in our studies. Dr. Shyam Ranganathan (he/him) is an expert in yoga philosophy and in this episode, he shares more about this topic, as well as how colonialism has influenced what we understand as yoga philosophy. Dr. Shyam Ranganathan is the founder of Yoga Philosophy, and a field-changing researcher on the study and translation of philosophy, especially South Asian philosophy and Yoga. He holds an MA in South Asian Studies, and an MA and PhD in philosophy, and is a member of the Department of Philosophy, and York Center for Asian Research, York University, Toronto. "Just because we're okay with disagreement doesn't mean that there are no right answers. Disagreement doesn't mean that everybody's opinion is equally good." " "After that colonial moment, people have to identify with imposed religious identities in order to find a place in a colonized world and that's where we are today." "Whereas the external world (nature) can be explained in terms of causality, persons have to understand themselves in terms of choice and responsibility." "When you meet up with people who advocate violence, you have to appreciate that that's a result of trauma." "There's no yoga practice that isn't informed by trauma."

In this episode, Hannah + Michele talk about Ishvara Pranidhana + Surrender. We had to surrender to this episode because we had already recorded it 2 other times and each time technology kicked us in the booty! So, we talk about how life presents us many opportunities to surrender. Ishvara Pranidhana translates to surrendering to God. When we surrender, we find ease and get in the flow, making it easier for us to be present and to experience the Divine. Why don't we surrender more? Because it is NOT easy and this is why this is the last Niyama. It's a practice that's for sure and we are always working on surrendering to life. What about you? If you are interested in learning more about the Yamas + Niyamas, Deborah Adele's book has changed our lives. It's the fifth and final niyama - ishvara pranidhana. The translation is "surrender to god," and today we'll explore how we can navigate the seemingly negative connotations of the word "surrender" and the sometimes tricky concept of a western god. In the end, this niyama asks us to trust that we are part of a larger consciousness and that we are always where we need to be for the next step on our path. Surrendering is learning how to give away the things that are causing us unnecessary suffering, not giving up on our ideals and values. The practice of Ishvara Pranidhana is the art of going with the flow, without letting the flow overtake us.

Getting to the Heart of Meditation and Yoga Practice with Linda Sparrowe Meditation and yoga can help you connect deeply with yourself. However, some people doubt how their practice helps them at first because it’s unfamiliar and new. You may think you’re doing it the wrong way, so you bury that voice at the back of your mind. But if you don't let go of your doubts, you won't be able to get to the heart-centered healing place that you seek. In this episode, special host Tessa Tovar joins Radically Loved Radio to interview yoga teacher and author Linda Sparrowe. Linda talks about her journey toward discovering meditation and yoga and merging her yoga path and writing career. She also shares her daily rituals and some eye-opening spiritual practice wisdom. If you want to get to the heart of meditation and yoga practice, this episode is for you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Learn about the marriage of writing and spiritual practice. Discover what it means to be radically loved. Episode Highlights Linda’s Meditation and Yoga Journey Linda’s yoga path started with meditation. She previously had many body image issues and had a worsening disconnect between herself and her body. Linda met a professor who told her stories about Indian mythology and the Vedas. Because of this encounter, she ended up going through transcendental meditation. What spoke to her, in particular, was mantra meditation. After her divorce and ending up in Berkeley, she met a Tibetan teacher who told her to stop with the mantra. She eventually came back to her breath and furthered her path. How the Writing and Yoga Path Intersected for Linda Linda went to Yoga Journal and got a job as a managing editor. She was already writing before this. She started doing asana because of an offer, but she hated it. She then met a teacher who was so soulful. Her body instantly responded when she trusted her teacher's touch, presence, and wisdom—it became a lifelong practice. In the midst of that, her writing started to connect more with her heart, wisdom, and what spoke to her. She started writing books and left Yoga Journal to write more. Linda became known as the “book doula.” The Marriage of Writing and Spiritual Practice Linda loves helping people move their passion, ideas, and wonderment and what they want to amplify out into the world. We all have a story, and we're the only ones who know how to tell it. But sometimes, we get in our own way when we try to say it. There’s a deep connection between moving inward in our spiritual practice and emerging from the inner wisdom onto the page. It’s a process of listening to what wants to be known and bringing forth what needs to be told. Linda’s Practices and Daily Ritual Linda went on to study with many teachers whose teachings she has absorbed into her being along the way. Her yoga practice begins in the morning when she wakes up. Her inquiry is “How am I doing?” and “What do I need?” She tries to separate her life from her work. Between those two things, she does at least one thing for herself in yoga. Part of the yogic practice is to be fully present and finish one thing before beginning another. She tries to do a short Yoga Nidra practice before going to bed to remind her body what it means to prepare for sleep. Setting Boundaries Around Work Setting boundaries is hard to do for Linda because of two things. One is because opportunities don't always come to a freelancer. Second is there are a lot of exciting things that she wants to be a part of. What Being Radically Loved Means for Linda The concept of radical self-love is fundamental. It's part of the trio of Tapas, Svadhyaya, and Ishvara Pranidhana. Tapas refers to the willpower and engagement to show up and commit to our work. It also means simplicity and releasing things to look at the essence of who we are. Svadhyaya refers to self-reflection and self-awareness. Being radically loved means that connecting to something bigger than yourself. It helps you understand you're worthy of love and connect with yourself. We are sometimes not aware of how our voices can potentially cause harm. Controlling Our Thoughts We can’t control how we feel, but we can control our actions, speech, and emotion. People can sin not just through actions and speech but also through thoughts. We can control our thoughts, but we can't predict them. Our minds do what our minds do; they carry on, move things around, and bring them up. Without agency around your thoughts, it can end up as a speech or action that causes irreparable harm. Aparigraha It is the practice of letting go of attachments. Staying in svadhyaya can become self-absorption. We don’t understand how we cause pain or bring joy. It's the idea of surrendering and letting go of the judgment you hold on too tightly. Linda’s mantra: “Isn’t that interesting?” One of the things meditation teaches about grasping is that you can cut ties to a thought. The Meditation Practice Don’t ever think that you’ve failed at your practice. The moment you notice something within yourself, it’s already a meditation practice. Just sit down. It’s what meditation practice is about. There’s no judgment in meditation; it’s just practice. Being Kind The kinder we can be to ourselves, the more freedom we have to be kind, gentle, and generous to others. It also works vice versa. Tonglen is the ancient practice of taking in others' suffering and outwardly expanding the gift you have to give. We have an infinite capacity to do this. Yoga Nidra allows us to dive deeply and help us realize our capacity to love and receive love. Getting to a Heart-Centered Healing Place It's an individual matter. One thing that yoga allows us to do is to experiment and freely come in and come out. When someone is deeply in trauma, there is no relationship with the body, or the relationship is triggered. Thus, even the slightest sense of agency can be empowering. Yoga allows us to test our relationship with our body both on a physical and emotional level. Yoga is not yoga until it’s personal, and it’s never personal until you take it home. Within a safe community, yoga can help you connect and create a deeper, loving relationship with your body, mind, and heart. Final Words We can’t separate our practice from our life. Our practice allows us to accept and allow things that we’ve never thought about before. Return to the idea of love. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode [06:51] “We all have a story to tell, and we're the only ones that know how to tell it. And sometimes we get stuck in our, ‘Am I worthy? Do I have anything to say?’ And sometimes we get in our own way, when we try to say it.” [14:34] “Tapas means not just the willpower to show up and the work that we have to do in the engagement that we commit to, but it also means simplicity. It means paring down, pulling apart, releasing things so that we're looking at the essence of who we are.” [18:27] What it is truly is that I can imagine the pain and suffering of others. I don't have their same experience, and I will never have that experience as a cis, white, privileged, elder woman. I won't, but in my practice, I have the space and the capacity of infinite love. [24:19] “Everybody who works with me, or who studied with me, know that I have this mantra. That is, ‘Isn't that interesting?’ I know, because then I don't judge myself so much. So I can let things come up and go, ‘Oh, here you are, again. Me and you. Wow. Isn't that interesting?’” [32:06] “If you take in the suffering of someone, and then you exhale, a sense of joy, or connection, or groundedness, or love, or whatever it is that you have in that moment to give. That's a beautiful exchange, isn't it? And we have an infinite capacity to do that.” About Linda Linda Sparrow is a yoga teacher, author, editor, mentor, and speaker on women's health and holistic healing. This week's Parsha is Parshat Shelach. It begins with the story of the spies going into the land of Israel to scope it out to prepare to enter it. It occurs in Sefer Bamidbar (The 4th book of the Torah, The Book of Numbers), the thirteenth chapter starting at sentence 27 through the third sentence in the fourteenth chapter. Ramban spoke about the problem with the spies in the following way. While it's ok to spy to prepare for military operations so that bnei Yisrael could conquer the land that God promised them, the 10 spies went beyond this. They presented and editorialized beyond just reporting what they observed. They said in Pasuk 39, “It is too strong for us!”. They were only thinking of their own capabilities without any mindfulness of God leading them and making sure that the Jews were successful, even if it seemed to occur through natural means like through battle rather than a supernatural miracle. This brings to mind the 5th Niyama (ethical principles towards ourselves), called Ishvara Pranidhana, known as surrendering to God, devotion to a higher power, and recognizing the source. Nicolai Bachman, in his book The Path of Yoga, says that this Niyama (Ishvara Pranidhana) implies HUMILITY, of suppressing the ego in the presence of something higher. The story of the spies is an important lesson of Ishvara Pranidhana. Rolf Gates states in his book Meditations from the Mat, “Act as if you trust in God” and when the 10 spies forgot to do this and let their egos create fear while forgetting about God, they had to pay the consequences and live out their lives in the desert until the next generation was ready to enter the land. Ishvara Pranidhana is mentioned in the Yoga Sutras in a few places, first being mentioned in chapter 1, sutra 23. As we get caught up in our day to day lives, we often lose our mindfulness of God's presence. One way to try and hold onto this mindfulness is through Tefila, prayer. When we wake up first thing in the morning and we say Modeh Ani “I thank you, living and enduring King, for You have graciously returned my soul within me. Great is your faithfulness.” When we go to bed at night, we say the nighttime Shema, which begins with, “Hear, O Israel, the L-rd is our G‑d, the L-rd is One.” Before we get out of bed in the morning we are mindful of God and when we crawl into bed at night we are mindful of God. Throughout the day we can say other Tefilot (prayers) and Brachot (blessings) to continue to bring the idea of God to the forefront of our minds. Maintaining a gratitude journal is another way to help keep a view of the bigger picture and the Divine. On the mat, there are a number of ways to surrender to the Divine. There is Anjali mudra, prayer pose for the hands, where the hands are held palm to palm, often at the heart. This can be done in a number of poses like mountain, tree, chair, warrior 1, squat, and even locust pose. There is of course Prayer pose where we lie on our belly, similar to locust pose. The forehead is on the floor and the elbows bend while staying on the ground so that the hands come up and together into prayer above the head. With yoga Nidra also known as “The Creative Surrender”, it's another wonderful choice to work on Ishvara Pranidhana, and surrendering to the Divine. As we think about the spies and how most of them couldn't keep their trust in God, how might you go through your yoga practice, on or off the mat to keep God in the forefront of your mind? And trusting and surrendering to God? Please feel free to follow, comment, and share @thejewishyogi thejewishyogi@gmail.com

On this week’s episode of Wonder Your Way to Brilliant I have a spectacular conversation with Kilkenny Tremblay, Yogi, and Founder of Sanctuary Yoga and Mindfulness located in Philadelphia, PA. This was an amazing gift for me as Kilkenny is magical. Having grown up the child of yogis (how many of us can say that?!), yoga has been the foundation of her entire life. We have been exploring Ishvara Pranidhana, the final of the Niyamas, as the call to surrender. But surrender to what? Kilkenny offers a powerful response to what can feel like a challenging question or call to practice.
Focus and refocus on the action of turning inward for answers rather than on outward action. Practice devotion in order to cultivate and fully experience the power of choice, inspired by a connection to the God of your heart.

The Niayams are the second step on Patanjali’s 8-fold yoga path. These 5 observances are practices of self-training. They help us cultivate happiness and confidence. And just like the Yamas, there are opportunities to practice them every single day. The Niyamas include: 6. Saucha (purity) 7. Santosha (contentment) 8. Tapas (self-disipline) 9. Svadhyaya (sefl-study) 10. Ishvara Pranidhana (surrender) In this episode, Jamie provides definitions and insight into the Niyamas and explores how you can infuse each one in your daily life. **This episode is the third in a sequential series exploring basic principles of yoga philosophy and how you can apply these principles to your daily life. This series is perfect for beginners wanting to learn more about yoga philosophy, as well as yoga practitioners that want to revisit their studies.** The Eight Limbs of Yoga: 1.
Hello! Thanks so much for listening to this episode of Yoked. In today's episode, I'm sharing a few processes related to a question I've received a number of times over the past few years: How do I decide which organizations or movements to support? First, thank you to everyone who has asked me this question! I am happy it is in our minds and hearts. Second, this is a question that leads to another set of questions. What are my heart-codes? (Here's an episode alllll about Heart-codes. ALSO, Day 10 of my Self-Care Challengeon Yoga Anytime centers around Heart Codes as an expression of Ishvara Pranidhana-- definitely check it out if you are interested in diving deep!) How do I want to feel? (This comes from Danielle LaPorte's Desire Map framework. I definitely use this framework in my daily life. Highly recommend!) How can I show up? What movements align with all of that? NEWS: This podcast is brought to you by the Wildcat Yoga Club. Support the show by practicing with us there. I have a few new goodies in my online yoga shoppe! We discuss, the last niyama, Ishvara Pranidhana, surrendering ego to...something. We go from micro to macro, talk about ego as a helpful parasite, and get into the murky waters of what exactly it is that choose to worship. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We finally made it through the entire book "The Yamas & Niyamas" by Deborah Adele. What a wonderful book! This last chapter ended up being a solo discussion. I hope you enjoy my thoughts and comments on the Niyama: Ishvara Pranidhana, or surrender. Are you willing or able to let go? What needs to be released? Do you have a fear of letting go even though you know your life might open up because of it?
We're finishing up the second limb of Patanjali's 8 limbs of yoga today: the Niyamas. Today we talk about the last three Niyamas: Tapas, Svadhyaya, and Ishvara Pranidhana. Also, lots more talk about donuts. Deal with it.

This 15 minute flow class will get you focused on moving and working with your body in a way that connects you to altruism, selfless devotion to the welfare of another. When we move the body in this way on the mat, it provides purpose and meaning to our practice and how we show up in people's lives off the mat. Sometimes shorter, more focused practices provide plenty of power and potency to influence real change in relationships.

The yoga of Patanjali offers us Yoga Sutras including the 8 limbs of yoga. Within these 8 limbs are the Yamas (social inter-action with others) and Niyamas (inter-action we have with ourselves). There are 5 Yamas and 5 Niyamas making them kinda like the 10 commandments of Yoga. For this class I focused on 3 of the Niyamas - Tapas (effort), Svadhyaya (self-study) , and Ishvara Pranidhana (surrender to the divine). In life we mostly do, effort and forget to feel the connection to something bigger - when we take time to reflect or study we can see where we are with both. In yoga effort is important to get to the mat keep your arms strong in down dog but to leave space to soften even surrender to this greater energy. Through self-study on and off the mat using scriptures or any books that take you deeper one can see there tendency and make a choice to see balance of these actions.
