When is it time to turn inward? When we show up for the people that we love, our attention is diverted from other things. There’s so much in this world that is competing for our time and attention. The result of this attention-grabbing is that our inner center is often left unattended. When we focus outwardly, especially in a helping profession, we tend to ignore the important inner work that needs to happen in order to take care of ourselves. My guest today has done extensive work with how we show up in the world to different people with a fully integrated life. I am delighted to bring to you the wisdom of Dave Conley. Dave thinks of each individual life as a series of concentric circles. There is the innermost circle of you, and then the circles around represent your relationship to the rest of the world. Dave is going to tease apart some of those most important relationships, and how feeding and nurturing and tending to that inner circle can extend its influence to the rest of your relationships. He will also tease out an excellent understanding of resilience, and how the right kinds of self-nurturing can build us up to weather the storm. Dave speaks from a place of personal experience and interpersonal empathy that rings so true for me. His calling to helping professionals, anyone in general, to put more work into your innermost self, and place less focus and energy just on being seen. We show up the most visibly when our innermost self is nurtured and loved. Dave will teach us techniques to help us slow down, pause, and take care of ourselves with small, sustainable shifts. Once we learn to do that, our impact on the rest of the world becomes that much more effective. It's how you eat is how you take care of yourself. Just the very, very center. It's you." –Dave Conley “When you don’t have to push and work so hard to be seen, the effort that was previously going towards that is freed up to go to so many other things.” –Rebecca Wong “There's only a finite amount of attention that we have in any given day. And if we keep splitting those things up over and over again, it takes time to refocus from thing to thing to thing.” –Dave Conley Working With Rebecca: Dive deeper with Rebecca while helping to support production of the #POBScast when you join our Wild Woman Discussion Groups. We can all imagine what a Stubborn Boss looks like, but how do they get this way and how does it become a dysfunctional leadership pattern? Most of the time, a Boss becomes stubborn by closing their mind to outside ideas and opinions and facts and clinging to the desire to be right. In effect, they want to win rather than admit that someone or something else might be more correct than they are. In effect, they has one key problem, their ego. This is a common trap for a few people that want a management title for selfish reasons, rather than for altruistic reasons. They want to lead a team for the prestige of being a boss, which means they want to be above others, rather than for helping people and initiatives to become better. So essentially, we’re seeing weak emotional intelligence (EI), defined by self-awareness, self management, relationship awareness and relationship management. The Stubborn Boss is unaware of an underlying insecurity. Their position is their security. It’s as if they are saying “I’m the Boss, so I must be right”. They look for respect from others by holding firm to their convictions, even when it seems illogical. What people can do to survive? Here are several strategies that you can try: 1. Don't try to change them. If you do, you are asking for trouble. When you try to change other people it shows disrespect for them and disrespecting a Stubborn Person is a one-way ticket to a fight that you will not win. 2. Avoid complaining about them behind their back, either to vent or worse, to try to discredit them or get them demoted. Being negative about someone else almost always backfires and it shows poor judgement on your part. 3. Become more resilient. Take care of yourself with the basics, like rest and energy. Get lots of sleep and eat well and you will be physically and mentally prepared. 4. Believe in yourself and feed your need for respect with small but constant reminders of what you are good at, and what you are doing well. Keep an “A-File” with copies of thank you messages that you receive from other people and examples of good work that you have done. When your confidence gets shoved, one peek inside this file reminds yourself of all the great work that you are capable of, and all the self-respect that you deserve. 5. Try to support them. You have to admit that there are some perspectives, opinions or decisions that come from your Boss that are actually valid and well thought out. This means that you are going to have to focus relentlessly on trying to understand. Support them when you see that support is objectively deserved, rather than falling into the trap of being a constant adversary. This open alliance might win you some favour and show you as being more level headed to your colleagues. 6. Communicate and fully understand what your Boss wants, and then to try to deliver your absolute best. 7. Take time to reflect after awkward interactions with your Boss is vital. This allows you to get out of the situation and properly evaluate how things went. If you are doing everything that you can and your life is becoming miserable, we are strong advocates for calling it for what it is and taking matters into your own hands by getting out. 8. Lastly, if the situation is toxic and irreparable, acknowledging this. Know that getting out needs to be in your list of available options. Start exploring new departments or companies that you could move to and maintain a healthy career. Dave Conley was working in a job he hated as a tech executive. He smoked a pack of cigarettes a day and was 330 pounds. He was miserable. One day he came home from his soul-sucking job to find his beautiful wife sick on the couch, struggling to breathe. Sixty hours after he checked her into the hospital, he turned off life support. Over the following two years, he crawled out of that deep depression, lost 150 pounds, ditched the cigarettes, quit the job he hated and embraced radical self-care. Now Dave helps people who were just like him. He helps people choose health and happiness over fat and misery. He helps people create their own radical self-care practice and change everything. He can help you reclaim your life.

Ever Better Podcast | Inspiring Stories | Motivating | Transition with Grace | Fulfillment | Wisdom
This week's Ever Better episode is a journal narrated by me, Lisa Conner Vogt. it highlights a common theme that I’ve observed with my guests, and brings you some of the best moments of recent episodes. This episode celebrates my guests who draw on their highly unique experiences to craft businesses that help others, as only they can. And, when I talk about their experiences, I’m including how and where they grew up, their families, the schools they attended, the jobs they’ve held, where they’ve lived, and their spiritual traditions. They’re taking the accumulation of their life knowledge and using it to help others. As I was thinking about the five guests that you’re about to hear from, I also considered how I’m building on my life experiences. And here’s what I came up with… My professional career spans almost thirty years – Yikes! I’ve worked for corporations, non-profits, small companies, and had my own businesses. I’ve held positions in marketing, communications, strategy, system development, project management, and I’ve managed hundreds of people. When it comes to producing a podcast, I’m drawing on everything I’ve done in my life to put it all together. It turns out that creating and sustaining a podcast is a fairly complex undertaking! It involves booking guests, interviewing, organizing, marketing, networking, audio production, and website development. But everything I’m doing is an extension of what I’ve done before. And as I coach, and speak to groups, I’m drawing on my own unique life journey, and sharing my business, academic, personal, and spiritual experiences. By building on my life experiences as a podcaster, I’m hopefully enriching others’ lives. So, I have a challenge for you! As you listen to this episode, think about your life experiences and how you’re using those to enrich your families, your communities, your colleagues, people you volunteer with, and others you come into contact with. Is there more that you could be doing? Is there more that you could be giving? If love to hear your thoughts! Send me a note at Lisa@EverBetterU.com. And now, onto my guests... Today, you’ll hear from Jessie Mejia, Lise Metzger, Marcus Bullock, Erin Elizabeth Wells, and Dave Conley. Jesse Mejia was my third podcast guest way back in December 2015. Jesse draws on his family, academic and business experiences as he mentors and coaches Latino students and professionals who are considering next steps in their careers. South Central L.A. is where Jesse grew up with parents from El Salvador who don’t speak English. Many would consider him to have come from “disadvantaged circumstances.” But Jesse did well in school, earned a scholarship to Philips Exeter Academy and then went on to college and earned an MBA. He did very well in the corporate world rising to the position of Corporate Strategy Officer for VW. And then he left, to pursue his mission-driven focus. In this clip, Jesse explains how some of his childhood experiences prepared him for the leadership role that he plays today. Lise Metzger, my guest on episode 26, uses her experiences as an editor, photographer, mother, and food educator to create the Grounded Women blog. She uses her writing, photography, and interviewing skills to learn and share stories of women farmers and to educate readers about the many benefits of knowing where your food comes from. She discusses how her Grounded Women blog got started in this clip. Marcus Bullock, from episode 27, was convicted of carjacking at age 15 and spent the next 8 years of his life in jail. His family wholeheartedly supported him throughout that period of his life and made sure that they stayed in touch. As CEO of Flikshop, he’s drawing on his firsthand knowledge that staying connected to friends and family while incarcerated makes a significant difference while someone is in prison, and helps them to reconnect when they are released. Marcus explains the origins of Flikshop. Erin Elizabeth Wells, from episode 28, is an intentionality expert and productivity specialist at Chosen Course. She has studied and been involved with world religions throughout her life. And now, she’s combining her spiritual nature, her writing skills, and her talent for organizing to help her clients take “inspired action” to set and achieve goals. She discusses the evolution of her business in this clip. Dave Conley, my guest on episode 29, is an igniter! Through his company, Limitl.es, he helps people start new companies, new initiatives, and reach new levels in their personal lives. He draws on his business experience that includes helping to get 32 million people onto the Internet with AOL, the joy he felt mentoring entrepreneurs throughout his career, starting his own companies, and his experiences working for the federal government. But, as you’ll hear, Dave is still striving to learn and improve each day. Learn more at EverBetterU.com. You can reach Lisa at Lisa@EverBetterU.com.
