In this episode of the Thought Leadership Leverage podcast, host Bill Sherman chats with Karen Wright Gordon, CEO of 5 Dynamics, about revolutionizing organizational performance. Karen explains their unique assessment, a product of Mike Sturm's pioneering research. This tool, while not the company's sole focus, is integral to their methodology. It reveals individual preferences in project phases, enhancing productivity by aligning tasks with personal strengths. Karen elaborates on the five phases: Ideation, Alignment, Planning, Execution, and Evaluation. Each person has phases where they excel and others that drain them. Their assessment helps identify these preferences, fostering a more efficient and satisfying workflow. Karen's journey with 5 Dynamics began when she encountered Mike Sturm at a Women's Presidents Organization meeting. Despite her company's success, she felt unfulfilled. Mike's insights resonated with her, leading her to acquire and further develop his IP, making it accessible and practical for businesses. Karen's vision transcends merely improving performance; she aims to democratize coaching and transform organizational cultures. By focusing on creating a unique lane rather than competing with others, she emphasizes the importance of having Champions—advocates who believe in and spread the methodology. Karen also shares how their methodology has surprised them with its versatile applications, from the corporate world to academia and healthcare. Studies have shown improvements in teamwork, satisfaction, and overall performance when using the 5 Dynamics framework. To keep the work fresh and vital, Karen collaborates with a diverse team, including a young neuroscientist and a seasoned chief revenue officer. This diversity ensures a broad reach and rich perspectives in their thought leadership efforts. Karen feels a profound responsibility to honor Mike Sturm's legacy. Continuing his work and seeing its impact on people's lives keeps her inspired and driven. Three Key Takeaways: • Leveraging Personal Preferences: The 5 Dynamics assessment identifies individual preferences in project phases, enhancing productivity by aligning tasks with personal strengths. • Creating a Unique Path: Karen emphasizes the importance of not just competing but creating a new lane, focusing on democratizing coaching and transforming organizational cultures. • Honoring Legacy and Innovation: Karen's dedication to Mike Stern's legacy drives her to keep the work impactful and fresh, collaborating with a diverse team to reach wider audiences and bring new perspectives.

We sit down with the founder of Pause, Breathe, Proceed to discuss her journey from the brink of burnout in a demanding corporate career to discovering a life of intention and wellness. Her compelling story unfolds as we explore the powerful shifts that massage school, Reiki, and yoga instruction brought into her life, and the persistence of stress that challenged her until a moment of clarity brought forth her simple, yet profound, method. Amidst a life filled with roles and responsibilities, I share my candid account of integrating the 'pause, breathe, proceed' philosophy into my narrative, finding balance and harmony in what was once a hectic existence. We examine the transformative nature of daily practices such as journaling, affirmations, and meditation, and their role in fostering confidence and tranquility. My mission is to bring back "kind" in "humankind" said Karen a few times during our interview As Karen and I discuss, the ripples from these practices extend far beyond the individual, touching lives through partnerships with nonprofits dedicated to mental health and suicide prevention, demonstrating the profound impact of small, consistent acts of mindfulness on both personal growth and the betterment of society. “What we're seeing is that organizations are trending towards putting what I'll call programmatic things in place. Whereas employees are craving relational support.” I am so excited to introduce a new episode format that we'll be mixing in, alongside our listener question episodes, that we call SPARKED Hot Takes. These SPARKED hot take episodes focus in on a big issue in the world of work, something deeply relevant to all of us. We'll dive into the angles and nuances with an expert member of the SPARKED Braintrust, teasing out the real questions, the nuanced assumptions, the parts no one else talks about, and what we can do to make work and life better. More alive. In today's first-ever Sparked Hot Take, we're taking an unusual look at what it's like to lead in this complicated, often upside-down moment, and how leaders, themselves, are struggling with their own humanity, at the same time they're being asked to take care of those they lead, and deliver bottom-line results in a world where both feel near impossible.  And, deepening into this conversation on leadership and humanity is Sparked Braintrust advisor, Karen Wright. Karen is the founder of Parachute Executive Coaching, acclaimed executive coach, advisor to senior leaders for more than two-decades, and the author of two great books, The Accidental Alpha Woman and The Complete Executive. With thanks to Prof Karen Wright and Dr James Turner for organising the event and the invitation to support with recording the sessions. This was the last of four episodes that we've shared from this first #NorQual event. This Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) project focussed on a hidden form of modern slavery, that of Domestic Servitude (DS). One of the principal ways in which this approach differs to that of more traditional approaches is that instead of creating knowledge for the advancement of a field of study or for knowledge's sake, CBPR is an iterative process, incorporating research, reflection, and action in a cyclical process. The data was then interpretated through the lens of phenomenology to reflect the lived experience of the women. DS occurs in a subversive and hidden way, behind closed doors, as victims might have entered the UK as workers, brides, or visitors. Some are married to their perpetrators and have valid visas, many are hidden and tortured. This research reveals the psycho-social impact of DS on these female survivors of DS and the recommendations for mental health and criminal justice services, revealed through 3 focus group interviews with 23 women between the ages of 25-55yrs.
