June and Jennifer Gibbons were also known as the Silent Twins. Growing up, the two were inseparable, and this continued on into their adult lives. The two were essentially joined at the hip, to the point where they refused to communicate with anyone else but each other. “We made a pact. We said we weren't going to speak to anybody. Who are you? Seems like a pretty easy question to answer, but most of us rattle of the standard answers. Father, mother, executive, cyclist, etc. The stuff that is part of the truth of who you are, but what is underneath all that easy to spout off stuff? Who are you really? And, what does it take for you to discover the real you, to be introduced to yourself? To say, “This is the truth of who I am!” David Conley came home to a tragedy, that changed everything for him. It led him to know what it was like to die of a broken heart, but it is also what introduced him to the truth of who he is, and the truth that “the journey is what makes life magical!” Today we explore the trip that he has taken to shed weight, find himself, and to explore what it means to nurture yourself, your soul, when life takes you out of the closet to be the truth of who you are and always have been. About David When Dave Conley worked for AOL, he introduced 32 million people to the internet for the first time. Now, he introduces people to themselves. A health and wellness architect, Dave specializes in helping people lose one third of their body weight–or more–just like he did. David Conley, president & CEO of Unicef Canada, speaks about tonight's Water For Life fund raising gala in Calgary.
David Conley works with accomplished people who have passion for their work, and have sacrificed their bodies and families for their vocation. He shows them how radical self-care changes not just their bodies, but their whole lives -- their careers, relationships, and legacy. In His Words... In 2011, my life blew up. I was 330 pounds. I was working in a job I hated as a tech executive for the government. I had multiple medical issues that my doctor told me, point-blank, would lead to an early death. I was miserable. One day I came home to find my beautiful wife sick on the couch, struggling to breathe. Three days later, I was a widower. My world stopped. The light in my life had gone out. I was still alive, but not living. And I had to make a decision about the way I’d live the rest of my life. It took over two years for me to crawl out of that deep depression, but I did. Along the way, I lost 150 pounds, ditched cigarettes, quit the job and started my own business. I chose life, love, and radical self-care. I put myself first. This is what I learned when my life hit rock bottom: The answers are already inside us. We can change. We can choose a different way of living, and we can rediscover love for ourselves (I know, that’s a tough one). We just need to turn those choices into action. I also learned that nobody succeeds at transformation alone. I know what it takes, because a few years back, I was you. I had help, and now you do, too. And now I help people like us balance health and happiness with significant achievement. If you enjoyed this episode, please Comment Share and leave a review... In this episode, Tom interviews David Conley, a professor at the College of Education at the University of Oregon. For more than 20 years, Conley has been a leading authority in American education policy. His seminal book, College Knowledge, outlined what students need to know and be able to do to succeed in college and careers. His famous Think, Know, Act, Go outcome framework was foundational for Summit Learning and My Ways from NGLC. Conley’s new book, The Promise and Practice of Next Generation Assessment, offers 10 principles for better assessment — and a vision for how assessment can be integrated into learning and be a positive experience for learners. In this conversation with Tom, David discusses his new book in-depth, explaining the 10 principles of next-generation assessment — five of which are student-centered and the last five which are school-centered. David also outlines a good week in a dream middle school that uses next-generation assessments and explains how students becoming good help-seekers is critical to being successful in post-secondary or careers. Key Takeaways: [:15] About today’s episode with David Conley. [1:10] Tom welcomes David to the podcast. [1:58] About David’s education in Bilingual Education and Curriculum Studies. [3:07] How David’s Ph.D. in Curriculum Studies helped inspire his new book, The Promise and Practice of Next Generation Assessment. [4:34] About the start of David’s book; from blog to fully-fledged book. [5:05] David talks about the 10 principles of next-generation assessment he outlines in his book, starting with the first one on how “next-generation assessment is focused on learners’ needs first and foremost.” [8:37] David describes the 2nd principle: “next-generation assessments view development from a novice to expert continuum.” [9:58] David elaborates on the 3rd principle: “learners understand the structure of knowledge, not just the facts. Online assessment interrogates the structure of knowledge.” [12:24] David expands on his 4th principle: “good assessments would promote ownership of learning and help develop self-knowledge.” [14:23] Tom asks about the second half of David’s principles, which are more school-centered. He starts with the 6th, which focuses on how good assessment can make information actionable for teachers in schools. [17:04] David talks about making assessment information more useful for learners and describes the two ways that schools generally aggregate information now. [19:34] How becoming good help-seekers is important to be successful in post-secondary or careers. [22:04] About the iNACOL Book Party for Tom’s new book, Better Together. [22:45] David’s sense of what actionable information for teachers in schools would look like. [25:06] Why David and Tom are so excited about David’s 7th principle on how next-generation assessments will have high cumulative validity. [29:01] David explains the 8th principle on how assessment should acknowledge once you pass the basics understanding of something, learning becomes more context-specific. Matt Coleman, DEd, has worked at every level of the secondary education system. He has served as educational assistant, middle school teacher, high school teacher, high school assistant principal, middle school principal, high school principal, director of secondary education, and assistant superintendent. In his administrative roles, Matt supported significant change resulting in improved outcomes for all kids—with a positive, differential impact on students who have been historically underserved. Not for profit organization - research and consulting about making school work for all kids. Think about what it means to be successful. All kids are served well. Organizational theory - inflexion framework. School identity should inform Schools don’t have a consensus of outcomes that defines readiness. As Inflexion, we use the Four Keys (Think, Know, Act, and Go) developed by our founder, Dr. David Conley, as a critical driver in our work with schools. This framework represents a holistic vision for schools and systems to align with as well as a shared mental model for staff to anchor their understanding of readiness. Our instructional approaches don’t engender ownership. Some information is available only to the privileged few. AVID is one of the programs that helps give kids privilege. Must think holistically Schools that are working for all kids have a consensus of outcomes and clarity of identity. Life readiness maxims Map skills they have learned against “Think, Know, Act, Go“ (or 5 C’s, or 21st Century Skills) Identity is a concept of vision. Take a look at what you do, and making a system that serves ALL students. What are you doing to what end? How do the activities you’re doing link to “Think, Know, Act, Go”? Life Ready Maxims Nike has 11 maxims. Maxims - how to distill and communicate key ideas of your vision. “We are Valley” Structure should reflect identity. Being consistently inconsistent Question to ask in interviews. 2nd question: How would you define fair and how would you apply it to kids. Hiring practices should reflect core maxims. Articulate that you understand that your perspectives are different. How to be a transformative Principal? Schools cannot form identity if the principal doesn’t have an understanding of their own maxims. Identify 10-12 stakeholders and ask 3 questions: What do I (as the principal) value, what do I believe, how do I see the world? (And what about what I do reflects those things) If you don’t see consistency in maxims, you need to do your own development work. How do I help my staff develop that same maxim? Be consistently inconsistent around the function of the behavior. Schedule a call with Jethro Are you feeling like you are always behind at school? In an effort to improve assessment practices, a collaboration between 19 different organizations representing educational researchers, educational policy reform advocates, private sector interests, and others, recently released “The Ten Principles for Building a High Quality System of Assessment.” (http://deeperlearning4all.org/10-principles-building-high-quality-system-assessments) A primary objective of the Ten Principles is to improve the ecological validity of assessment practices by bringing equity to the development of students’ academic, career, and civic aptitudes. Guests on the program include workforce Expert, Gail Norris, who is the U.S. Lead for Industry Learning Services at Siemens; Dr. Rebecca Wolfe, who is an education policy advocate and Associate Vice President of JFF’s Students at the Center initiative; and, Dr. David Conley, Founder of Ed Imagine and researcher focused on college and career readiness, student ownership of learning, and systems of assessment.
In 2011, David Conley’s life blew up. He was working in a job he hated as a Technology Executive for the Government. He was 330 pounds and he had multiple serious medical issues that his doctor told him, point-blank, would lead to an early death. In short, he was miserable. One day David came home from his soul-sucking job to find his wife sick on the couch, struggling to breathe. Sixty hours after he checked her into the hospital, he had to do the unimaginable: David turned off his Wife’s life support system. His world stopped. The light in his life had gone out and he had to fight for his life. It took over two years for David to crawl out of that deep depression, but he did it. He lost 150 pounds, ditched his cigarettes, quit the job he hated and started my own business. He chose life, love, and radical self-care. He put myself first. The World Health Organization says that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. This is what David learned when his life hit rock bottom: The answers were already inside him and he knew he could do it. David chose love. He chose to love his future self. He chose to love himself as much as he loved his wife. “I don’t want ANYONE to have to go through what I went through. I don’t want a tragedy to be the catalyst that pushes you to be who you want to be.” Now David follows his calling. He works with lifelong fat people who deep down, wish they weren’t fat, weren’t viewed with disgust and pity, and weren’t invisible. He show them how to use radical self-care to untangle their lives, just like he untangled his. David’s clients want to lose half to one-third of their weight – and reclaim their lives. They are committed to doing the really hard work and making major changes. Hear David Conley describe the journey that led him to radically change his own life, and how he helps others choose Radical Self Care in their own lives.
