A heartfelt, creative reunion nearly 30 years in the making. This week, I rewind the clock and reconnect with my former high school art teacher and longtime creative inspiration, Orlando Leyba. Nearly three decades after our time together at the Cambridge School of Weston, we dive into a conversation that's filled with laughter, wisdom, and a deep sense of gratitude. Orlando wasn't just as a teacher, but as a true mentor — someone who saw the creative spark in me when I was a lost, rebellious 16-year-old trying to find my place in the world back in 1990. His belief in me, and the wild, wonderful community at CSW, helped change the course of my life. Together, we dive into the magic of making art (and mistakes), why creativity matters now more than ever, and the challenges today's students face in a world full of distractions like social media. Orlando reflects on decades spent nurturing creativity (and some wild student art projects!) and offers grounded, heartfelt advice for anyone—at any age—looking to rediscover the joy of making things with their hands. There's nostalgia, vulnerability, and a reminder that playful experimentation has a place in every stage of life. Takeaways to consider: Art is essential for healing and connection: Creativity isn't just a hobby—it's a lifeline in a world that can feel chaotic and disconnected.Creativity begins with permission to play (and fail!): Perfection isn't the goal—experimentation, joy, and starting over are how true breakthroughs happen.Community (and great teachers) matter: The people who believe in us, celebrate our quirks, and encourage our wild ideas can change the trajectory of our lives.
Join me today for an honest and vulnerable conversation about navigating the tough places in life where answers are unclear and the future feels uncertain. Through the lens of my own experiences as a mom, especially during a challenging period when my younger son chose to take space from our relationship, I explore the art of "making peace with the unknown." Together, we unpack what it takes to keep the faith, navigate heartbreak or dreams unfulfilled yet, and leave enough room for more to be revealed—no matter how long it takes. I weave in personal stories, reflections on parenting young adults, and the timeless wisdom of the Zen parable “The Farmer's Luck,” all with a dose of humor and realness. Whether you're facing family struggles, waiting on big news, or simply craving a reminder that life keeps unfolding (even through the messy parts!), this episode encourages you to stay open to possibility and hope. Your 3 Main Takeaways: Hold Space for the Unknown: Sometimes the greatest growth and healing happen when you allow yourself (and others) the room to be in the in-between—without rushing to fix, label, or control the outcome.Maybe is a Powerful Place: Like the wise farmer in the story, learning to sit with “maybe” instead of rushing to judge things as ‘good' or ‘bad' helps you embrace the full, rich unfolding of life.Love Shows Up in the Liminal: Even when relationships (especially with those closest to us) get messy or disconnected, choosing to stay loving, present, and open allows for the potential of deep repair, new beginnings, and unexpected joy. Thank you for listening to The Robyn Ivy Podcast! I'm truly grateful to have you as part of this community—together, we're learning, growing, and holding space for all the beautiful unknowns that life brings. In this heartfelt episode, we're diving into the topic of owning our gifts and embracing the wholeness of who we are. If you've ever found yourself downplaying your talents or focusing more on what you need to improve rather than celebrating your strengths, this episode is for you. If you hear yourself saying a whole lot more of “I am working on or I am trying to” instead of “I am doing x or creating x so that I have, become, brought into life y result (internal win patience or external win new house) Try it with one of your own stories of not doing. Fill in your favorite action verb + a specific outcome. For example “I am trying to figure out how I can get paid to write” vs “I am drafting 3 pitches to sell a 250 word essay for $250 to these named online media outlets”. Through sharing anecdotes from personal coaching experiences and a recent women's group gathering, I explore how crucial it is to acknowledge the balance between our light and shadow sides. Together, we ponder why it often feels safer to play small and how empowering it can be to unapologetically own our strengths. Main Takeaways: Embrace Your Whole Self: True growth comes from honoring both your strengths and the areas where you're still evolving. You were born whole—light and shadow together—and when you acknowledge and accept both, you step into your fullest, most authentic power.Own Your Gifts, Celebrate Your Strengths: Too often, we downplay what makes us extraordinary. This episode challenges you to fully acknowledge your talents and contributions, embracing them as essential parts of who you are. When you truly see your brilliance, you transform not just your self-perception, but your impact on the world.Shift Focus for Growth: By consciously directing our attention toward progress and potential rather than shortcomings, we elevate our sense of worth and open doors to new possibilities. Imagine two kindred souls meeting across centuries—one, a 12th-century saint named Hildegard of Bingen, and the other, a modern-day indigenous healer, Grandmother Esperanza. Both women, though separated by time, share a profound connection through their love of nature and unwavering faith. In a recent episode of The Robyn Ivy Podcast, my dear friend Ines and I explored the spiritual kinship between Esperanza and Hildegard. Both women embody a divine presence that bridges the gap between the earthly and the ethereal, showing us the power of deep spiritual connection. But why are we sharing their story with you, Grace? Because in witnessing such connections, we see endless possibilities for our own personal and spiritual growth. These encounters remind us that transformation is on the horizon when we open ourselves to learning from those who have tread the path of love and devotion before us. This June you're invited to journey with us to Germany's Rhine River Valley for a 5 day retreat combining the teachings and healing of Grandmother Esperanza with visits to the sacred sites of Hildegard. She has found her love to nature and through this began to follow the spiritual path when she experienced the healing qualities of just being in the forest. In 2017 she discovered the transformative effects of Nonviolent Communication (M. Rosenberg) on relationships and since 2020 gives trainings herself. She is also a mentor to women in leadership positions and as a certified mediator helping couples and families with their conflicts. This year she accomplished a training as a nature coach to introduce nature to all parts of her work. She lives with her partner and dog Sammy in Mainz (near Frankfurt), a region near where St. Hildegard of Bingen used to live in the 12th century. Deeply interested in the life and work of this extraordinary woman of her time she became spiritually connected and offers seminars to share the legacy of her sacred spirit. www.ines-reimers.de MORE ABOUT ROBYN IVY Robyn Ivy sees people for a living. The Unknown waits patiently for me, Admonishing not if I miss the mark, Inviting me to be still under the layers of lived experiences Alone and among those who enrich my life, Give me pause, question, Help me abandon my cloak of doubt. In this episode we'll explore what it takes to actually turn dreams into reality. Today I am sharing the “Road to Hope”, the very process I experienced preparing to bring my spiritual teacher, 89 year old Grandmother Esperanza, here to Rhode Island for the "Restoring Hope" 10-day wisdom event series I created. So we start from the point I received the vision for this series. Why? Because having a good idea is one thing, but making it actually happen is another completely with at least 1000 lessons in between. When I was alerted to the unexpected “have to take the walls down to the studs” mold remediation project 3 weeks before her arrival; the challenge of integrating lofty spiritual teachings into my daily life immediately became very real. As I prepared my home for the event amid unexpected renovations, I open up about the trials and triumphs of navigating life's upheavals with grace and the guidance of cherished mentors like Esperanza. We'll explore the intricacies of creative pursuits, unveiling self-compassion, resilience, and the courage to face challenges. In this episode, My hope is to give you a front row seat into what can happen and how to stay in the arena with it all when you decide to make the thing, do the thing, create the thing. How to navigate challenge and change amidst chaos and unexpected hell…could have been another title. Tune in as we uncover tales of personal growth, the power of community, and the art of balancing effort with surrender. Whether you're seeking to bring your creative visions to life or find solace in shared experiences, this episode promises to inspire and encourage you to take the next step on your own road to hope. Join us on this adventure of spirit, heart, and transformation. In this episode, you'll uncover three transformative keys: Embracing the Chaos: Discover how navigating the unexpected (like my unplanned home reconstruction!) can spark new beginnings and clarity.Intuitive Guidance: Learn the art of blending intuition with action, crafting a path that honors both the whisper of our hearts and the lessons from wise teachers like Esperanza and Mamita.Joyful Surrender: Unlock the balance between effort and letting go, finding the magic in surrendering to life's mysteries. This episode was recorded LIVE, together in real life, back in October 2022 in Sedona Arizona. I was on a month-long camper van experiment out West but that's a story for a different day. This week's guest, Erin Sharaf, is both a scientist and a mystic. A former primary care provider and university professor who became a mindfulness expert and shaman. Erin now helps cultivate healing for people and the planet through enhancing the connection between mind-body-spirit and nature. Her work draws on both traditions of modern science and ancient wisdom. We met up for a hike amongst Sedona's red rocks, then sat down to talk about how her own mindfulness journey from a new student, a few decades ago, led her to become a fierce advocate for the planet. “I sit so we all can rise”. Let that sink in. Magic. What do we do with all that we become aware of when we get still, meditate and can see clearly once the dust of our minds settle? Do we have a responsibility to do anything about that which we see? For Erin, this is where her passion for social justice, peace and kindness came alive. Mindfulness Teacher
