Today on the show, we welcome dividend investor Don Newman. Don gives an update on the dividend landscape noting that dividends are currently thriving in the economy and where he sees them heading in the next few months. Don notes stability in the economy has led to most companies being in good financial standing. Interest rates remain sticky plus the number of expected rate cuts have reduced leading to a more favourable market sentiment. Don suggests this has also led to a Goldilocks scenario where the economy remains stable, inflation decreases slightly, and the stock market benefits. He adds historically low interest rates have punished savers, forcing them into riskier investments for higher returns. However, dividend stocks remain attractive, especially during rate cuts, as their yields remain stable or even increase over time.  As rates decrease, dividend yields become comparatively more attractive than other investment options. Don says this trend is expected to continue, making dividend stocks a promising choice for investors.   Recorded on April 9, 2024.   At Fidelity, our mission is to build a better future for Canadian investors and help them stay ahead. On today's podcast, we speak to portfolio manager Don Newman as he reviews 2023 and what opportunities lie ahead for dividend investors. Don manages two dividend-focused Funds, the Dividend Fund and Dividend Plus Fund. Don points out there's been a change in his investment strategy because of the rate changes we experienced this year. He's looking for businesses that can withstand increased rates. Zoning in on companies with less average, lower payout ratios. That means lower dividend yield, but can still grow under higher interest rates. He adds that industrials have been a solid sector as of late. For example, it looks like the inventory destocking cycle is coming to an end which means more shipping opportunities specifically through rail. REITS have had a difficult year, but Don says there are still opportunities in real estate with respect to AI. Data centers could increase in demand next year. Don is looking at firms with large cash flow that can use their unique data along with AI and produce a competitive advantage. Recorded on November 28, 2023. Prayer is a fundamental and essential practice in Christianity, and the majority of Christians around the world engage in prayer as a central aspect of their faith. Prayer is seen as a way to communicate with God, express gratitude, seek guidance, offer praise, and intercede for others. Yet sometimes, as a Christ follower yourself, you may find yourself engaging in these toxic thoughts: I don't know how to pray. I don't have time to pray. I don't want to bother God with my petty kinds of issues when so many others are suffering in the world. God knows everything already. Why do I have to tell Him about things? How do I really know God is there? After all, He's invisible! If you've ever struggled with prayer, this is the episode for you! We'll tackled these tough THOUGHTS that may be standing in the way of more effective and regular communication with the God you serve and love. Don Newman has over 20 years experience in ministry and building leaders. A born storyteller, he infuses his insights on life and leadership into both his writing and his speaking as a pastor, conference speaker, and legacy coach. Don's passion is teaching others to build their own legacies: to pass onto future generations the love, stories and wisdom they collect over a lifetime. In his first book, Respond Up, Don reveals the secret to intentionally employing disappointment, betrayal, and temptation and transforming them into a vehicle that delivers you to your destiny.  His second book, Don't Just Speak It, Write It, explains how every Pastor can become a published author. Don and his wife, Tracee, live in Central Florida, and are proud to include three grown children and five grandchildren in their legacy. Wages remain sticky, with many individuals locked into multi-year contracts with limited flexibility, and unions that continue to reduce inflation-related losses. Don comments on Canadian banks and explains that while they tend to be profitable early cycle stocks, we're currently at the tail end of the cycle, with the market pricing them down as things start to slow. On one side, there is going to be inflation, and on the other side, it is secular because you can't have long-term inflation when you have demographics trending older. A good way to do this is to invest in a dividend fund; as the prices rise, you can see more income through the dividend stream. Don currently holds more commodities than the average dividend fund manager. Commodities are cheap on a relative basis and very “under-owned” right now. He wouldn’t call what we are seeing a super-cycle, but he believes there has been underinvestment in the area in the last five to ten years.  Recorded on March 11, 2021.

Dividend investor Don Newman discusses dividend-paying companies and dividend yields in today’s current environment and in the year ahead.  He says dividend-paying companies may be a great option for investors who are seeking yield. He says these companies are trading at a very attractive price, are maintaining their dividends, and yielding roughly the same amount at high-yield bonds and with more opportunity for upside capture as the economy reopens in 2021 and 2022.  Don stresses the importance of differentiating between secular winners and COVID winners.  For example COVID winners are soup companies and laptop manufacturers.  He says a portfolio built solely on COVID winners will be very imbalanced.

Portfolio manager Don Newman explores the key trends in dividend investing as countries look toward lifting lockdown restrictions and companies seek to return their balance sheets to pre-crisis levels. In Don’s opinion, the 45% run-up on the S&P 500 Index had a few key drivers, such as optimism related to reopening the economy, and the monetary policy response from central banks. For example, the Federal Reserve added about $3 trillion to its balance sheet in order to provide liquidity to the market, and to push people into risk assets. It was also driven by fiscal stimulus of about $200 billion in Canada, which helped stabilize consumer spending. Don is looking for companies with less-than-optimal leverage on their balance sheets, that won’t spend the next couple of years paying off debt and that can continue to grow, as well as companies with sustainable dividends that will continue to trade at premiums. Don believes share buybacks will be off the table for several companies for some time, because it doesn’t look good to lay off workers and then buy back stock. He believes dividends may replace buybacks over the next couple of years. Recorded on June 25, 2020.

Don Newman, director of research, and portfolio manager of Fidelity Dividend Plus Fund, continues to monitor the markets very closely as the severity and swiftness of the downturn has surprised investors. Prior to the current market downturn, Don had been cognizant of the length of this market cycle with the markets reaching historical highs, primarily off multiple expansion as opposed to quality earnings growth. In that market environment, Don had been taking below average risk. Although the current situation in the market, with regards to COVID-19 and the oil shock, has been unexpected, Don notes that selective individual stock valuations do look much more attractive now. My all time favourite political show is Power & Politics with Rosemary Barton on CBC. I’ve been watching the show, on and off, for the past ten years all the way back to a time when Power & Politics was just called “Politics” and Don Newman was the host and Rosie was an up and coming, scrapper, of a political journalist. Don would open the show with his famous “Welcome to the Broadcast” line. His last show prior to his retirement was full of sniffles and awes as he told Rosie that her success in being a journalist relied on her “just being herself.” Well, Don was right, eventually. It was just pure silly oversight on Don’s part, but he forgot about gender inequities in the workplace. First, Evan Soloman took over Don’s job despite the fact that I’m pretty sure he didn’t do much political reporting prior to (think Sunday morning show host) and from one puff interview after another I stopped watching. Then Evan Soloman decided to partake in a few improprieties using his CBC job to sell some expensive artwork to some fancy people, and BOOM it was Rosie’s time to shine. Well, not quite yet. The CBC named Rosie the temporary host of Power & Politics, because we all know ladies we need to earn our way. It was only after a truly slaying interview with Conservative MP Chris Alexander on the Conservatives inaction on the Syrian Refugee Crisis that Rosemary finally proved her chops to the CBC brass and got the job! Since then, Rosie has solidified herself as “my type of oprah” weaving good-hearted fun with hard-hitting interviews. It’s certainly the best way to consume Canadian Politics. So, there I was, last week watching my favourite political show. Rosie was interviewing a fella by the name of Dominic Barton (no relation) who is on the government’s Advisory Council on Economic Growth. By the sounds of it, it’s a group of people in suits, pretty sure the suits part is a requirement, and they brainstorm ways the federal government can improve the economic growth of the country. Pretty dry stuff. Indeed! The main substance of the interview was how does the Trump administration affect a trade dependent country like Canada, and Dominic’s response was two-fold--it’s a challenge and it’s an opportunity. Dominic believes that the challenges the Trump administration poses could, in a way, jolt the Canadian economy to a new level of growth. As the USA is pulling in on itself, we can take advantage of their absence and build new relationships with other countries and enter a new era of Canadian economic wealth. Sounds divine, in a twisted sort of way, to take advantage of what is essentially a horrible and chaotic situation for our neighbours to the south. Yet, to think that the Canadian government and Canadian companies wouldn’t try to make the most out of a bad situation would be a bit naive. Case in Point. At the end of January, a group of Canadian tech companies sent an open letter to the Canadian Government to ask for an “immediate and targeted visa” to those people affected by the United State’s Muslim Ban. Was it a political stand against government overreach and Islamophobia? Or, were they ceasing the opportunity to recruit top talent to their companies. The later, maybe, yes, definitely. Which brings us to this week’s episode, as we delve into the cashew industry and look at a few countries taking advantage of a bad situation. This week’s episode is Cashews: When Opportunity Strikes. First off, before we continue, I would like you do something. If you wouldn’t mind, bring up your internet browser and search Cashew Apple. Photo Credit: Greenthaicurry.com Flickr via Compfight cc Do you see what I’m seeing? I have a feeling the last time you were eating a bowl of roasted cashews you didn’t have this in mind. It looks like an apple is midway through a bowel movement, and it reminds me that, at some point, I really need to get down to the equator so I can try this cashew apple out. If you are not too sure what you are looking a...
