It's not a less developed country in that kind of situation, but we're going to have to get after this a lot more than we do. Part of that is the national regulator thing. You've got an Alberta stock exchange, you've got a BC stock exchange and Nova Scotia Securities Commission, a bunch of rules. Some of them are lax, some of them are not lax. Then all you do is go jurisdiction surfing. It's not going to work for the OSC in Ontario, let's see what Alberta thinks. Let's go to BC. It becomes a problem. I don't know if it's the national regulator idea, but something more comprehensive has to be done than what we've got now.Munir Haque: [00:00:46] Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of The Boardroom 180 podcast. I'm your host Munir Haque, an executive coach and senior board strategist. I have partnered with Action Edge Executive Development to lead their governance and political acumen division. In each episode, we meet with governance leaders and step into their boardrooms, where decisions shape the world around us. Today, I'm thrilled to welcome a distinguished guest whose career has been defined by storytelling, insight, and a sharp focus on economics and public policy, Mr. Philip DeMont. Phil is a longtime writer and broadcaster with an impressive portfolio. He's been a familiar voice to many across the country as a CBC contributor, tackling business and economics topics with clarity and depth. I was, for a long time, in Toronto, but then I sold my house in Toronto. I moved to Halifax where it's cheaper to live, where I grew up. I'm from a little place on Gottingen Street, across from the second largest military base in Canada.Munir Haque: [00:02:41] I lived in Halifax for a little while, and my oldest child was born in Halifax at the Grace Hospital there. Fond memories of Halifax, a beautiful place.Philip DeMont: [00:02:52] Great place.Munir Haque: [00:02:54] I talked a bit about you being a trusted voice to Canadians across the country. I've heard you countless times on the CBC morning show here in Calgary. Presumably that's across Canada as well?Philip DeMont: [00:03:06] Yeah, when I show up on the CBC, I will do morning shows from Halifax to Vancouver. You show up a couple of times a day in Calgary, a couple of times a day in Edmonton, that kind of stuff. Always on business topics not quite ripped from the headlines, but the kind of stuff that would give listeners some insight into a headline that they read. But at the same time not quite down the level of where you think The Wall Street Journal would be, because you're trying to keep it on a level where people can understand it, but get an insight into what's going on.Munir Haque: [00:03:40] I just want to start out a little bit about, we know you as a freelance broadcaster, we hear you on the radio here. Why don't you tell us a little bit about how you got to where you are right now? Like you said, you started out with degrees in economics and political studies.Philip DeMont: [00:03:55] I had gone to school at Dalhousie, and my dad had been a long time stockbroker in the city. I was thinking that might be where I ended up, but I ended up going to Queens to take graduate degrees up there. That led me to, I don't want to say a bigger world, but the idea that I didn't have to follow my dad's footsteps, to be honest. Although my first job, I've had every job that people usually hate. I worked for the Toronto Star, if you know that paper. I worked for the Senate of Canada. My first job was with a Calgary senator, Earl Hastings. He had been appoi...

But he is still a patriot. And as a gay man, he has a complicated relationship with the Bible.  But he still believes in God. ·       He was the kid whose personality could not be denied.  He was likeable and easy to get along with. His charismatic personality would later help separate him from the other news anchors who were stiff and indistinguishable.  ·       He has always had a strong work ethic, outworking everyone around him. He worked full time while pursuing his degree full time and he never took a vacation his first ten years at CNN. ·       “Every setback or shortcoming you think you have is actually a gift. You just have to figure out what that gift is and how to use it.” ·       He's ok being a lightning rod, as he's just being himself and trying to foster healthy debate. He has learned to not care what others think about him. ·       “Excellence is not about perfection. Rather, excellence is being a good citizen, a good partner, a good family member, and a good contributor to society in the world.”   Show Notes: Books: I Once was Lost: My Search for God in America This Is the Fire: What I Say to My Friends About Racism TV/Digital: The Don Lemon Show

Do you run a virtual agency or a more traditional in-office business? It all comes down to what suits your and your team's work style, and one agency owner has found a way to incentivize in-office days. She also shares the lessons learned after two big clients left within weeks of each other. This feature guest has constantly been evolving and adapting to change. She shares her reasons for being an advocate for the collaborative and innovative environment that comes with a shared physical workspace. She also shares the challenges she has faced that forced her to diversify her client roster and empower her team to be independent. Sarah Segal is the CEO and founder of Segal Communications, a public relations, social media, and influencer marketing agency that specializes in crafting communication strategies spanning the events, hospitality, and food niche. She shares her journey from broadcast journalism to accidental agency ownership. Sarah also talks about why she established a hybrid agency show where she encourages her staff to go to the office, and the decision to resize her agency and diversify their client roster. In this episode, we discuss: An innovative approach to promoting office culture. Adaptability and resilience when big clients leave. Building a self-reliant agency team. Subscribe Apple | Spotify | iHeart Radio Going from Broadcast Journalist to Accidental PR Agency Owner Sarah began her career as a broadcast journalist in New York City, first working behind the scenes for various networks before transitioning to an on-camera reporter. However, her move to San Francisco marked a significant turning point in her life. While covering a particularly harrowing story, Sarah, now a new mom, found herself unable to desensitize herself from such distressing content. This realization prompted her to pivot her career path. This new stage of her career involved moving into PR and working starting in in-house positions before eventually moving to an agency, where she reunited with an old college friend who first presented the idea of starting an agency together. Sarah was working a couple of freelance gigs and a particular opportunity to launch a resort in Sun Valley, Idaho offered the perfect chance for the agency's first gig. Following her partner's departure for an in-house role, Sarah has successfully operated as a solo agency owner ever since. An Innovative Approach to Promote In-Office Culture Sarah, a forward-thinking advocate of new technologies and platforms, initially established her business as a virtual agency even before the pandemic. However, as she began to expand her team with freelancers and staff, she quickly recognized the irreplaceable value of in-person communication within her PR agency. Face-to-face interactions and fostering a sense of community in the workplace were paramount to her. While her team had become accustomed to remote work, Sarah sought to strike a balance between virtual and physical presence. She carefully selected an office space that felt like a home away from home and introduced amenities such as work slippers. Furthermore, she implemented mandatory office days for all staff members. She created a point-based reward system for additional days in the office. Points are cashed info things like extra PTO, high-end headphones, and even international travel. This way, days at the office don't have to feel like punishment for her staff and she is leaving room for them to spend extra days of the year there at their choosing. This not only fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among team members but also allows for more spontaneous and creative interactions that can lead to better collaboration and idea generation. When Big Clients Leave: A Lesson in Adaptability Every entrepreneur is cautious about how they move ahead with growing a company. Throughout the years, Sarah has received all types of advice about what not to do with her agency, and, by heeding this advice, she successfully expanded her client base, securing several major accounts. However, when the agency lost two of those clients in six weeks, Sarah had to start making tough decisions to stay afloat. Unfortunately, this meant she had to lay off part of her staff leaving her feeling terrible, yet also relieved about being able to make payroll. This experience served as a poignant lesson that she hopes never to repeat. Since losing those clients, Sarah has restructured her agency to diversify their portfolio. Now, her agency does not focus solely on big clients and has a range of small and mid-size clients. This way, if any of those clients depart, it has no impact on her P&L. By spreading out the risk across multiple clients, the business owner was able to protect their bottom line and ensure financial security moving forward. Furthermore, diversifying clients also opens up opportunities for new business relationships and partnerships. By working with a range of clients, the business can expand its network and potentially tap into new markets and industries. This can lead to increased revenue streams and a more stable financial foundation for the business. Cultivating Independence by Building a Self-Reliant Agency Team As your agency grows and you bring in new team members, you'll find that your role shifts to that of a leader who nurtures and develops others. It becomes essential to empower them to embrace your vision and handle challenges independently. By doing so, you can free yourself from the pressure of making every decision. When you invest in training a proficient team, they become equipped to tackle any obstacle, allowing you to step back from being involved in every single decision. For instance, Sarah entrusts her team to handle minor decisions and seek guidance for major issues. It's not about her making the final call, but rather ensuring that all written materials leaving the agency are reviewed by a second party. Her team knows to come prepared with multiple options when seeking her input, akin to the 1-3-1 rule recommended for mastermind members. By teaching your staff to consider various solutions and choose the best one, they can gradually take charge of decision-making. For Sarah, one of the most important things is that her team keeps her up to date about the temperature of each client. Unfortunately, she also thinks temperature checks are something people don't necessarily learn until they've had the experience of getting that call from a client who is leaving. As an agency owner, patience is key as your team gains the necessary experience, ultimately surpassing your expectations. Only by adopting this mindset of letting go of small tasks that your team can handle on their own can agency owners finally let go of some of the things they used to do and start doing the things no one else can do. Shaping the Agency's Client Communication Strategy As someone who runs a communications and PR agency, Sarah has seen with concern that most agencies have a very close-to-the-vest approach to how they handle their media. These agencies won't give clients access to the emails and connections they have and keep those as their value. According to Sarah, the primary reason clients seek her agency's services is the time and effort it saves them. She and her team handle tasks that clients simply don't have the bandwidth for. This understanding has shaped her client communication strategy, emphasizing transparency. Sarah prioritizes open and honest communication with her clients, sharing media lists, expenses, and other pertinent information. This commitment to transparency not only fosters trust but also ensures that clients are well-informed and aligned with the agency's goals and objectives. Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

My guest this week is Sofia Akin, journalist and main anchor at KMTV's Kent Tonight, and (as we learn in the breaking news at the end) who is about to join the BBC as a Broadcast Journalist. We learn that Sofia, who is from West Sussex, started out as a video journalist, and she talks about how no two days are the same. Sofia gives the example of a current story at the time we recorded the podcast regarding the bombshell defection of Natalie Elphicke MP from the Conservatives to Labour. Sofia talks about being one's own worst critic, the role of feedback, and Sofia discusses her upbringing and her educational journey, and we find out how she got into journalism. Originally, she wanted to be a print journalist but Sofia explains why she especially loves telling a story through TV. Sofia also reveals how quickly one needs to learn in such a short amount of time. We learn that Sofia's favourite movie is Harry Potter and how she doesn't get tired of it, and how she also likes to watch films which take her by surprise. We talk about the ‘Sliding Doors' and ‘what if' notion, too, and about the way not having breakfast in the morning can impact in unexpected ways on how one's day unfolds. We find out about the teachers who have inspired her, including Rob Bailey at the University of Kent with whom Sofia went on to work at KMTV, and the experience of reporting from the count in Tunbridge Wells at the local elections. We learn about how Sofia and her peers have been thrown in the deep end due to the quantity of breaking news over recent years, and we discuss the local element to the news in Kent. Then, at the end of the interview, before finding out whether she is a looking back or a looking forward type of person, we have a big reveal – Sofia announces that she is moving to BBC South East in mid-June.

Today on the show we're talking about the legend that is Barbara Walters. We actually have another journalist I admire, Susan Page, who wrote The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters (which just came out on April 23), talking about a journalist I admire, so our cup runneth over with powerhouse female journalists. Barbara lived a long, full life, passing away on December 30, 2022, at 93 years old. In her lifetime, she became one of the most well-known and well-regarded broadcast journalists and television personalities, perhaps most famous for her genius level interviewing ability and for breaking barriers that once prevented women from being equal to men when it came to broadcast journalism. She was an Emmy winner and hosted numerous programs like Today, the ABC Evening News, 20/20, and she created The View, which Susan and I talk about on the show today. She was a working journalist from 1951 until her retirement in 2015 and was very deservedly inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1989; she even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the early 1960s, Barbara was relegated to reporting on women's interest stories on Today, but her popularity amongst viewers eventually catapulted to her becoming a co-host of the show in 1974, the first woman to hold such a role on an American news program. In 1976, she broke down more barriers when she became the first American female co-anchor of a network evening news program alongside Harry Reasoner on the ABC Evening News—which, um, did not go so well. Don't worry, Susan and I talk about that, too. She became known for her annual Barbara Walters' 10 Most Fascinating People, and during her career interviewed every sitting U.S. president and First Lady from the Nixons to the Obamas; she also interviewed both Donald Trump and Joe Biden, but not when either was president. Her interviews with subjects ranging from Fidel Castro to Monica Lewinsky and so many more gained her recognition as the best interviewer in the business, but who was Barbara Walters the person, not the personality? Well, Susan's book lays it all out. We learn about Barbara's marriages—she was married four times to three men—her daughter, other romantic relationships, and her childhood, especially her relationship with her father and her sister, and how those relationships shaped her into the woman she became. Today on the show to discuss it all is Susan Page, the Washington, D.C. bureau chief for USA Today. This is Susan's third biography of a powerful woman: her first, about Barbara Bush, was released in 2019 and is called The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty. She then released a biography about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Madam Speaker: Nancy Pelosi and the Lessons of Power in 2021, and her third book is The Rulebreaker. Susan has covered seven White House administrations and 11 presidential elections and has interviewed 10 presidents, right up there with Barbara Walters. She also moderated the 2020 vice presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, founded and hosts a video newsmaker series for USA Today called “Capital Download,” and appears frequently as a panelist or an analyst on various news programs, including Meet the Press—and was even president of the White House Correspondents Association at one point. I can't wait for you to hear our conversation.   The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters by Susan Page

MSU alumna Sheri Jones is a broadcasting and journalism icon in the Greater Lansing area. She's been anchoring the news at Lansing's CBS affiliate, WLNS-TV 6 for 35 years. And she's now also on Lansing's ABC affiliate, WLAJ. We last spoke in 2018 when Sheri was inducted into the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Now in 2023, Sheri is being inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame.“It feels great because of the true sense of the word journalism. I really believe that journalists, as I once heard, write the first draft of history. We're watching things as they unfold, and we're writing it down from a factual experiential point of view. And so, for me to have done that for 35 years and tackled some pretty big issues in our community and to be recognized for the journalism part of it, I'm awestruck by it.”Where did you grow up and why was MSU the place for you when college came around?“Well, it just felt like the place. When I came for my visit, I felt very comfortable here. It was a gut feeling. And I always tell parents, you have to let your child decide with their gut. I was accepted to the school down the street, and I went there with my parents and my dad was like, ‘Do you like it? Do you like it' and I'm like, ‘Dad, I don't. I just don't feel right here.' I'm a country girl from a small community on the west side of the state. There are trees and the Red Cedar and open spaces and fresh air. I just felt like this is where I belonged. And looking back, it was the correct decision for multiple reasons.”Did you always know you wanted to do broadcasting and journalism or did that develop later after you got here?“When I was in high school, I knew I liked a lot of different things. And remember I went to high school when there was no internet. My mom said, ‘Why don't you take a full day aptitude test, take an educational aptitude, take a personality aptitude, an interest aptitude.' I went all day, and it came back lawyer or journalist. I came to Michigan State to study journalism and communications and figured I could always go get my law degree. I thought I would try TV first because you just don't know how that's going to work out. And here I am 35 years later.”People who know you know that you like to say you'd rather be right than first with a story. Talk more about your philosophy of covering the news and being accurate.“Anybody who works with me knows that's right. And we will hold off. In this world of Twitter and Facebook - and as we've lived through here recently with 911 scanners and people reporting stuff on the scanner - you have to have an official affirm your story and make sure the facts that you're reporting are true. And I will always hold back until we know it's right, and then we can go. I'm not going to report on something that I have not vetted. I just won't do it. I don't care if we're going to get beat. Well, what if you're wrong? I can't afford that, and my station can't afford that.”How have you seen broadcasting and journalism evolve over the years and where is it going? “Yeah, via that live-streaming, my sister in Florida can watch me as I do the news. The shaping of the news and leads through Facebook and Twitter are something we have to follow. We'll follow those and vet those out. But the accessibility? When I grew up, my parents sat down, had dinner, and watched the 6:00 news and then the evening news. And now you can watch the news wherever you are, whenever you want. If you're standing in the checkout lane, you can watch it. You shouldn't do it when you drive, but you can be anywhere around the United States or around the world. It is the accessibility. But again, it has to be a trusted source. At the local level, we don't have an agenda. And as you move up that chain of media sources, you have to really understand what you're watching. And the algorithms of Facebook. Let's say you like a certain story, well, Facebook will feed you that information and continue to feed you that information in the vein of which your brain is telling you like. You're not going to get an opposing opinion. You have to seek that out. And that's just the way that it's set up.”Are there some favorite memories along the way or things you're proud of? I think of Crime Stoppers, for one.“Dr. Bob Trojanowicz, who was the head of the Criminal Justice Department here at Michigan State, really understood community policing. He understood how in order for the law and law enforcement to work, the community has to be kind of our eyes and ears. “Our success rate when we air three or four felons who are on the run on Wednesday nights at 11:00, by the next day or the next week, they either turn themselves in or their moms or ex-girlfriends turn them in. Sometimes they call themselves and ask, ‘How do I get my picture off the TV?' And I say, ‘Well, maybe turn yourself in.' But right now, our success rate is at like 78 percent. If we air four, three will be caught within a day or two or a week. It's very powerful in making our community safer. And then hopefully those people go get the rehabilitation and help that they need so they don't come back in into the system. But I feel very proud of helping to make our community safer through that effort.”What's your advice to the students at MSU now as they prepare to enter broadcasting and journalism?“The world is their oyster, as they say. We call them multimedia journalists, and they have to be well versed. The first thing is to understand journalism. Number one, you need to understand the ethics of journalism and what it takes to get a story and to make sure that you have your sources. I had some of the toughest professors here. If you misspelled a word, you got a point off. It went from a four to a three. Journalism and English are critical. The rest of it, you can learn. You can learn how to be on camera. You can learn how to talk into a microphone. You can learn the acting part. Definitely take acting classes now because you don't just sit behind a desk. Now, I stand, and I move all around the studio. You need to be a good storyteller. But at the beginning of that, the base of that, is journalism. To succeed, you need to be a good journalist, bottom line.”We talked about your long career at WLNS. No plans to stop, right? I mean, you're still engaged and love doing this.“Oh, I'm still so engaged. I believe I'm right where I'm supposed to be. I love my community. I love being able to help the university. You and I get to do the parade together. I'm engaged in the journalism program, the communications program, and the criminal justice program.”Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.

The Cassandra Cain Podcast talk about the Batgirls comic welcoming Kyle and Maps from the Gotham Academy fame, an appearance from the Riddler, Cassandra being a detective and an all around cool character and Stephanie having her priorities intact.  Events in the Hill are quite intense with the murders of the so-called Hill Ripper.   Broadcast Journalist turned podcaster is gaining listeners/followers, which is encouraging Grace to be a little upfront with confronting the Hill Killer, which causes her to become next on the Hit List.   Tell us your thoughts about the book at www.thehuntresspodcast.com Twitter @huntresspodcast feathersandfoes@gmail.com

The observance of National Hispanic Heritage month goes on every year from September 15th to October 15th to honor the lives of American citizens with Hispanic heritage. That goes the same for the VFW as we are just a melting pot, a reflection of the greater society of our great nation. Although we are all different strands, America is much stronger when we are braided together, and nothing does that more than military service. Through the camaraderie, we are unidos, or joined together.   Rob's guests on today's episode are two gentlemen who have very different Hispanic backgrounds, and different military service experiences, but are both Americans to the core. First, he speaks with VFW's QuarterMaster General Mark Garduno. He talks about his military service and what it means to be the financial steward of one of the largest and most established veterans service organizations in the nation. Then, he speaks with Retired Army Master Sergeant Felix Figuroa. He reflects on his background, military service, and the invasion of Afghanistan on the anniversary of the war. Marc Garduno, VFW Quartermaster General   As Quartermaster General, Marc and his team are responsible for all VFW finances and the management of VFW facilities. [2:06]   After high school, Marc followed in his father's footsteps joining the Army in the 82nd Airborne until retiring in 2008. [5:44]   Wanting to continue serving, Marc got a degree in nonprofit management and put his name in the ring to be assistant to the Quartermaster General. [17:24]   Marc describes the roles and responsibilities of the Quartermaster General. [21:47]   Marc describes the importance of the official brand and the use of the store. [26:11]   Marc embraces his Mexican heritage but considers himself an American first. [33:20]   Felix Figueroa, Retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant and Afghan War Veteran   Felix describes being proud of his Puerto Rican heritage growing up in Michigan and his decision to enlist in 1997. [44:47]   Remembering September 11, 2001, Felix describes serving his country on U.S. soil until his deployment to Afghanistan. [50:02]   Felix continues his story about the shock of serving in Operation Enduring Freedom as a Broadcast Journalist. [1:10:38]   Felix and his team left Afghanistan in February between Operation Tempo and Operation Anaconda. [1:29:39]   Felix offers a word to fellow Afghan War veterans. Mike Hill is a military veteran, broadcast journalist, TV personality and actor. While many are familiar with Hill from his time on TV (ESPN, FOX Sports and Bravo's Real Housewives of Atlanta), his 2020 memoir “Open Mike” paints a more complete picture of his life, career and personal struggles. For Hill, that includes a traumatic childhood filled with memories of domestic violence, Hill discovering his stepfather was a hitman and the demise of two marriages. In this episode of Headline Rewind with Michelle Fisher, Hill goes beyond the pages of his memoir. This in-depth conversation takes a look back at how Hill successfully used his time in the military to pivot into broadcasting. Additionally, Hill speaks candidly about his past struggles with depression, as he and Michelle discuss mental health in the Black community. Hill even opens up about some of the most uncomfortable parts of his past, and explains why he opted to leave them out of his memoir. -- Follow Mike Hill on Instagram, and Twitter: @ItsMikeHill -- Hill's Memoir “Open Mike” is available, here: https://www.amazon.com/Open-Mike-Hill/dp/1734234679 -- Follow Headline Rewind on Instagram @TheHeadlineRewind, and reach the podcast via email at Hello@TheHeadlineRewind.com -- Follow host Michelle Fisher on Instagram @MissMichelleFisher, and on Twitter @MichelleFisher
