A legend tells of a cache of Civil War-era gold buried somewhere in the hills of Elk County, Pennsylvania. Over the past few decades, treasure hunters have descended upon the community of Dents Run to seek their fortune – and to find out if the stories are true. Dennis Parada's search began in 1974. He spent the majority of his lifetime researching the tale, put years into combing the woods, and told his son bedtime stories of Union soldiers on an ill-fated trip. Then, one day, he believed he finally found it. His research was so convincing that in 2018, the FBI agreed to excavate the site Dennis pinpointed. According to the FBI, they found nothing: no gold, and no evidence that gold had ever been there. But not everybody is convinced that the FBI is telling the full truth. I went way out in the Pennsylvania Wilds, up in elk country (not Elk County), to interview a couple who make salad dressings and ship them across the country. Village Eatinghouse dressings...or are they sauces? Marinades? Whatever they are, they're delicious and versatile, and they're made here in Centre County, so I went out and found Clay and Melanie Phillips in Pine Glen, PA. We talked, we tasted, we had a few laughs. You'll like it. Those dressings made me think of all the ways I do little hacks and additions when I'm cooking, so I talked about that, including another central PA favorite, Gazebo Room Salad Dressing. I give you a couple short recipes for shortcut family favorites, including one with a surprising secret ingredient. We have another small contest! I'm asking you to fill in a list of Pennsylvania foods at the end of the episode, and suggest what Pennsylvania food you'd like to hear about in a future episode. I'll draw a random winner from respondents to get a five-pack of STAG stickers! There's an absolute bonus on What I'm Drinking Today: three different Dad's Hat rye whiskey tasting, including an as-yet-unreleased Danko rye whiskey. Next episode, if I can get a second short interview, will be about trout fishing in central PA. I've interviewed two fishing guides, I went to a couple opening day parties -- why didn't anyone tell me about opening day parties?! -- and I learned about fishing. See you in two weeks! Until then? Whether it's for hiking, swimming or tubing, summer-lovers are sneaking in a final few days of playing in their favorite waterways. But researchers say they might be floating in a soup of chemicals. A program to bring remote workers to Pennsylvania is wrapping up. Hear the experiences of participants in St. Marys, Elk County. The body of a man found frozen in a small Berks County cave nearly a half century ago has finally been identified. Police say a man arrested last week at a Johnstown rally for presidential candidate Donald Trump does not believe in Trump's policies and hoped to hang a banner in protest. Joe grew up in Elk County, PA, outside of Pittsburgh. The county’s name doesn’t come without reason. From the way Joe talks about it, it’s a woodsy place, where the elk may not outnumber the people but the wilderness certainly informs the pace of things, the way people live and relate to one another. Joe comes from several generations of journeymen, skilled laborers who know how to build, mend, and weld. This kind of legacy comes with a both a wealth of wisdom to mine as well as a heavy burden of identity, of subscribing to specific ideas about what it means to be a man. Joe manages this inheritance gracefully. When he isn’t confronting notions of toxic masculinity, he heads the woodshop at Peg and Awl.
In the fields and forests of Pennsylvania’s Elk County, love triangles, unrequited advances and fevered courtships have a unique soundtrack.
