President Trump signed a proclamation Wednesday to ban nationals of 12 countries from entering the U.S. One of those countries is Afghanistan, where thousands of Afghans helped the U.S. military fight its 20-year war there. Zia Ghafoori, a former interpreter for the U.S. military, and Shawn Van Diver, founder and president of AfghanEvac, a group that helps resettle Afghans, join us. Then, two food distribution sites have reopened in Gaza after violence in the region temporarily shut them down. UNICEF's James Elder joins us from on the ground in Gaza. And, researchers are praising the results of two studies that used immunotherapy to fight one of the most difficult-to-treat types of brain cancer, glioblastoma. In this Podcast, Craig, Gaurav and their guest Victor discuss the Year or War of the four Emperors.   In a time of chaos, after the death of Emperor Nero, the Roman Empire found itself engulfed in a brutal power struggle known as the Year of the Four Emperors. It began with Galba, the governor of Hispania, leading a rebellion against Nero, catalyzed by discontent among the provinces. As Nero fled, declared an enemy of the state, he took his own life, paving the way for Galba's ascension. Galba, however, struggled to maintain power. His failure to pay the Praetorian Guard alienated key supporters, leading to his assassination. Otho, one of Galba's trusted allies, soon seized the throne, but his reign was short-lived as he faced opposition from Vitellius, who rallied the legions and successfully marched on Rome. The battle for control culminated in fierce confrontations, with legions loyally switching sides. Ultimately, Vitellius claimed victory and adorned the Imperial purple, yet his decadent reign could not sustain. He was overthrown by Vespasian, a seasoned general who had garnered support from the eastern provinces. Vespasian's rise marked the end of the chaos. He established stability, founding the Flavian dynasty that would last for decades. This tumultuous period not only reshaped leadership in Rome but also highlighted the fragility of power, etched forever into the annals of history as a superb reflection of ambition, betrayal, and courage in the heart of the Roman Empire.

I speak with Josh Moore, combat Marine, former SWAT and law enforcement officer with Orange County Police Department, husband and father of two young girls and head of sales of a tech startup company called INVI Mindhealth™.  Josh and I formed a friendship over the past year when I joined INVI as their medical director.  I first heard Josh's story as he spoke last summer in front of a large SWAT audience, recounting a series of horrific firefights at a forward operating base in Afghanistan, where he suffered the loss of two of his friends Geno Mills and Hunter Hogan.  Josh joins us to share his full story, from leaving home after high school, graduation from the Marine Corps, and deployment to Afghanistan in 2012.  During the months of deployment, he details the ominous buildup of enemy forces around their outpost culminating in a sudden series of ambushes against an overwhelming force.  With terrifying granularity, he describes each crystalized second of the attack, enemy bullets snapping over his head, returning machine gun fire to protect his team mates, and how in the span of 3 minutes, his platoon was nearly overrun and Geno Mills was mortally wounded.  Then, already reeling from grief, the following day, while leading his platoon on patrol, Josh and his team are attacked again, and Hunter Hogan was killed by sniper fire. Josh was 19 years old.  The ghosts of that deployment in Afghanistan haunted him, and struggling with severe depression, Josh left the Marine Corps.  He tried to balance reentry into the civilian world, a young family, and a new career in law enforcement and SWAT.  But like so many veterans of combat, Josh fought a 20-year war with PTSD, depression and substance dependence.  His incredible narrative is a journey of loss, reckoning, and ultimately of healing.   Thanks for listening to and supporting our podcast!  Please follow the podcast in Instagram: @thegritwithdrbenpeery Please reach out to with any feedback to: @drben0636 on Instagram. “Aging population to hit U.S. economy like a 'ton of bricks',” Reuters reported in 2021. “Aging Is The Real Population Bomb,” the International Monetary Fund cautioned earlier this year. “How an aging population poses challenges for U.S. economy, workforce and social programs,” PBS declared in June. “Why we're borrowing to fund the elderly while neglecting everyone else,” The Washington Post's Catherine Rampell wrote just this past November. Year after year, it seems, American media issues the same warning: The population of the US, due to - among other factors - rising life expectancy and falling birthrates, is getting older, which spells doom for our economy. A graying public, we're told, will inevitably upend the labor force, destroy productivity, bleed programs like Medicare and Social Security dry, and thus place an undue burden on the younger population. But the premises for this panic are based on misleading stats, goofy non-sequiturs, and misdirected faux class warfare. So, why do media keep insisting the olds are out for your hard-earned money? Who gets to shape our understanding of what an aging population actually means economically or socially? How does this narrative shift the burden from the state to the individual in terms of managing retirement benefits and systems of care? And what are the real harms of treating people over the age of 65 like they're a cancer on society? On this episode, we examine the narrative that an aging population is necessarily dire, looking at how it's instrumentalized to gut public benefits for seniors and thus for everyone, advance the financialization of retirement, and reframe the conflict between rich and poor as one between young and old.
