What is your crucible? The definition of a crucible is this - “a situation of severe trial, or in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new.” But think of it as...the things that have happened in your life that have shaped you...for better and worse. Wouldn’t you like to take all the things in your life and have them support and propel you instead of handicap and weight you down? Dr. James Kelley is my guest, he’s the author of “The Crucible’s Gift” and host of the podcast, “Executives After Hours”. It’s ultimately talking about many, many people who rose from adversity...in spite of or maybe because of, the crucibles in their lives. It’s a life altering topic folks. So many of the big movies today focus on people with superpowers. Regular people who had a mishap that gave them a superpower. They were bitten by a spider or electrocuted or fell in a vat of chemicals. In the movies, they get some cool superpower. In real life when bad things happen to us like that, we just expect we’ll just...die. Or be critically handicapped. But this concept is so, very real. Tragedy or at least hardship and disappointment is going to happen to everyone! From childhood on. How you deal with it is...everything. So will the crucible in your life make or break you? Help or handicap you? Overcome you or will you overcome it? And you may need to look into your past and consider what crucibles in your past have done to you. How do you perceive them? What is the story you tell about them? Were you equipped and empowered, or just...hurt? We also get into the crippling effect of blame. It gets to the root of our very real...handicaps or strengths. And it may not be black and white for you. Maybe things happened that gave you some strengths, AND weaknesses. We’ll flesh it out with Dr Kelley. We have a phenomenal guest today. Dr. James Kelley is the author of The Crucible's Gift: Five Lessons From Authentic Leaders Who Thrive In Adversity. The book is based on his interviews from over 140 executives, ranging from Fortune 100 companies to entrepreneurs to everything in between. The Crucible's Gift unpacks the journey a leader takes to become a more authentic leader, starting with their crucible moments. In addition to writing, James speaks and conducts seminars on authentic leadership, and teaches at the United Arab Emirates University. He completed his Ph. D. in international marketing at the University of Western Australia, and ascended to higher education to work in Philadelphia. James has led an incredible life all over the world, and I can't wait for you to hear his story. “It was in their moments of adversity where they learned the most about themselves, how they dealt with other people, what they needed, and what they could give to other people. Without that adversity, they weren't able to see the light of those possibilities.” Dr. James' tips on cultivating Self Awareness: Cultivate mindfulness. Even 1 minute per day of quiet breathing per day Body scan in the morning Ask for feedback: “what do you love, and what would you love to see?” You won't know your own blind spots until something big (negative or positive) occurs Investigate your own adversity moments Adversity forces you to create awareness. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Don't let fear conquer you; conquer fear. Often, we let our emotional fear make the decisions for us. I think it's really important that we acknowledge the fear, embrace the fear, but also make the harder choice that'll make us a better human being.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. It’s so easy to hate the hard moments we’ve had in our lives, but there’s so much value in what we get out of them. Why is it important that we don’t immediately try to reframe the adversity we face? How does embracing the adversity in our lives actually change us for the better? On this episode, author of Crucible’s Gift: 5 Lessons from Authentic Leaders Who Thrive in Adversity, Dr. James Kelley talks about his journey, his book and why the painful moments in our lives help us grow, become more self-aware and treat people better. When you have your “crucible moment” and you pull it apart, learn to love it, and you find the good, you’re actually developing your self-awareness. -Dr. James Kelley Things We Learned From This Episode How James grew from his own crucible (06:11 - 07:29) James lost his dad at 20, which led to some difficult moments including a drinking problem which culminated in a DUI. The DUI forced him to reevaluate his life, figure out what hole he was filling with alcohol, and learn that honesty and addiction don’t go together. The lessons from the loss take time to reveal themselves (21:45 - 23:05 ) A crucible is never a catalyst in the moment. If the crucible is a gift and it’s wrapped, then you have to unpack it and figure out what that pain is about. It’s not about reframing something in the moment because that’s more denial than healing. The healing won’t happen in the timeframe you want it in and that’s okay. Why we shouldn’t rush the process of developing something (24:32- 25:01 ) The process of developing an idea may not be perfect, but it is necessary and valuable. It’s never about that first idea, it’s about talking to someone about that first idea that spurs on the next set of ideas, and gets us to THE idea. It’s easy to find the bad in in adversity, but the real gold is in seeing the good in it. We have to have our adversity moments, and we have to love them and live them, pull them apart and figure out what the good is in them. Leaders that embrace their adversity, grew their self-awareness, started to act with compassion because their adversity made them understand people better. This doesn’t just make us better in business, it makes us better in life as whole. Dr. James Kelley is the author of The Crucible's Gift and a professor of marketing at the United Arab Emirates University. In today's episode, he sits with Christopher Lochhead to talk about why failure and losery make us who we are, why every crucible moment is a gift, and why being an authentic leader matters. "The reality is if I just step back, the only person I need to prove myself to is me." - Dr. James Kelley Three Things We Learned The struggle of proving oneself Dr. James Kelley has had an ongoing struggle of wanting to prove himself to somebody. This constant bout of inadequacy all stems back to a time when he felt like he wasn't the kid that could amount to anything. But in the end, he knows that he can only do so much about what other people think. Striking the balance between family and profession There's a fine line between being great at our career and doing a great job family-wise. Whatever our profession, we all want to achieve a level of mastery, success, and recognition in our field. But ultimately, the people we need to be kindest to are the same people who will take care of us when we're past our prime and have done what we must. Writing to be part of a crowd can be hard Dr. Kelley admits that writing a book is tantamount to being part of a group of people who have written nice books, bias and all. But he also confesses to feeling like he could've done better, that there are parts he could've made stronger. If he were to rewrite these parts, the book perhaps wouldn't be any better, but at least he could be happier. Some people have gone out of their way to do their own thing while others are trying to jump in. Some people write books to capture moments in their lives or to capture history of their long-standing endeavors. We all have different journeys, crucible moments included, and we're all trying to get through them. Bio: Who is Dr. James Kelley? A true leader is authentic, relatable, and guides others based on the adversities they have overcome. Make sure to look at the positives of adversity and also learn to live with the sorrows of adversity. Both are key in truly overcoming an adversity and growing from it! Listen with intent. Don’t think about how you can interject your own wisdom, but rather listen to what they are really saying. Without a learning mindset, you won’t grow or develop. Acknowledge that fear is a valid emotion, but don’t let it control you. Push through the fear and see how much you grow from it. 3 Bold and Kick-Ass Quotes: “Who you are defines what you do.” - James Kelley“As competitive people, sometimes we get so caught up in trying to be right that we forget the moments of doing right instead.” - James Kelley“Don’t let fear conquer you, conquer your fear.” - James Kelley Click the hyperlink below to connect directly with James!Website: https://www.drjameskelley.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/executivesafterhours Twitter: https://twitter.com/kelleyjamesb LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kelleyjamesb/ Click the hyperlink below to connect directly with us!Website: http://www.ThinkBoldBeBold.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThinkBoldBeBold/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinkboldbebold/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thinkboldbebold Sponsored by Mavericks Mastermind Until next time, Do Something Nice for Someone!
