Dr. James Kelley, author of The Crucible’s Gift: 5 Lessons from Authentic Leaders who Thrive in Adversity, defines ‘crucible’ as micromoments — “small moments that create meaning,” positive or negative. Kelley says each crucible is an opportunity to learn about who we are because knowing who we are as people helps us get out of our own way and thrive. Knowing who people are is crucial because, he says, “I don’t care what you do. I care who you are because who you are defines what you do.” Kelley wrote the book for aspiring managers who want to move to the next level and for leaders at the top who aren’t as self-aware as they should be or aware of their weaknesses.   Who is James Kelley? Well, his path is still being built brick by brick and the current brick is a book Crucible's Gift: 5 Lessons from Authentic Leaders Who Thrive in Adversity. But what about all the previous bricks? He was the youngest of 3 1/2  kids (long story - we get into it) in a traditional Irish Catholic family, which means loud, sarcastic, passive aggressive and a touch of physical discipline, minus the obligation of Mass. His parents did the best they could with what they knew. In the middle of his time at university when he took a break from school, one afternoon his life took a turn. After walking into his job selling used cars, two colleagues were lining up a white substance and rolling a dollar bill and asked him if he wanted to try. That sparked something in him, and four months later he was back at university full-time.  After completing his undergraduate degree, his life was a series of twists and turns, ups and downs and a few zigs and zags. The death of his father, an MBA, a year teaching English in Japan, a DUI, and three jobs later, he was a rudderless vessel at sea. However, one night on Portland State University's campus, while attending an event for potential Peace Corps recruits, his life took an unsuspected turn. In one brief conversation with four Ph.D. students, James realized that I wasn't the dumbest person in the room, and thought a Ph.D. was possible. He got his Ph.D. in International Marketing at the University of Western Australia and ascended to higher education. His family moved to Philadelphia for a seven-year stint. Now, he lives just outside Dubai with his wife Mary and four kids. He teaches, runs a small consultancy, and works on writing and a new startup, called Q-Change. It is James' belief that his story is unique and one filled with failure, and consistent no's. What he maintained through life is a sunny disposition that if you just work hard and be a good person you will end up on top. You won't be able to help but feel James' energy coming through as we get into the interview. Key Points from the Episode with James Kelley: James lives outside of Dubai with his family. They moved out there to get his family an experience outside of the US where they can get exposure to other cultures as one of the few rather than being part of the majority. He was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, where he lived until he was 17. He left for college in Ohio, but decided to leave school after a year, and went home to be a used car salesman. One day in March, he went into the little office on the car lot to get out of the cold, and found two coworkers doing cocaine, who offered him some. He said, “No,” and immediately called his mother to tell her he wanted to go back to school. During his third year of school, James’ father passed away. He described getting the news in detail. He remembered everything about the situation, and the words he heard, and then he couldn’t process anything. He found himself in the car going home an hour and a half later, telling jokes, which was just how his brain was processing it. For the next few years, he felt cheated by the world. He was looking forward to the transition in his father-son relationship with his dad as he became an adult and could get closer to him in a different way, and that wasn’t going to happen. As a result, his behavior started to change as a result of emotional turmoil going on inside. He was drinking more, cheated on his girlfriend, and eventually got arrested for drunk driving (no one was hurt – he got caught driving recklessly, but there was no accident). When the cops spotted him, he decided to try to race home before they caught up to him, which obviously failed, and he was arrested at his home with his mother watching. As a result, he had to go to rehab, which he calls the single most impactful and positive impact in his life. He was able to look at this as happening for him, not to him, and put the work into himself with his counselor and group sessions. At 24 years old, that could have easily gone very differently, but he was willing to see how this could help him with the pain inside. He saw that it was a choice, and whether we appreciate the optionality we have or not. We started to talk about his book, The Crucibles Gift, which shares stories and lessons that inspire leadership. The drive to write it came from recognizing how adversity has given him growth moments. The moment you move from “To me” to “For me” is very powerful. It’s not to say the moment of pain or sadness isn’t ok or necessary – it can help you move your life to the other side of the problem – but you can’t stay stuck in it. The leaders he sees moving from the mourning process to this place of seeing how this tough situation can be an opportunity for you, it can be an instantaneous opening up. We got into trust. He looks at it as needing to trust people right away and giving them opportunities to break your trust rather than waiting for them to earn it. He talked about micro moments of meaning, a term he discusses in his book. In every interaction with people, no matter how long, his main goal is to leave them with a positive memory of that moment. Leaving someone with that moves them subconsciously to seek another positive moment. That can chain together and drive happiness, self-awareness and more. The one must-have behind all of this is a growth mindset, which is the prerequisite to welcome the opportunity for growth in even the darkest moments. No one is all growth or all fixed, we have moments of both. The idea is to recognize where we have growth thoughts and take advantage of them, and recognize where we are more fixed in our mindset, and see if we can open ourselves up to a more growth mindset in those moments. One method is to see those fixed mindset moments, and see how it’s helping or harming you. For example, it may not always be bad, like a fixed mindset about not drinking, though perhaps how you’re doing that may be hurting you socially or professionally. Self-awareness also seems to be a key differentiator in how people can grow. If we are more self-aware, we may see where we could do differently or recognize the opportunities for growth more readily than if we are less self-aware. While he still teaches and has his show and book, James is launching a new company, called qChange, that uses bluetooth beacons and mobile phone notifications to bring mindfulness to behaviors to try to spark changes in our lives. It’s so easy to hate the hard moments we’ve had in our lives, but there’s so much value in what we get out of them. Why is it important that we don’t immediately try to reframe the adversity we face? How does embracing the adversity in our lives actually change us for the better? On this episode, author of Crucible’s Gift: 5 Lessons from Authentic Leaders Who Thrive in Adversity, Dr. James Kelley talks about his journey, his book and why the painful moments in our lives help us grow, become more self-aware and treat people better. When you have your “crucible moment” and you pull it apart, learn to love it, and you find the good, you’re actually developing your self-awareness. -Dr. James Kelley   Things We Learned From This Episode How James grew from his own crucible (06:11 - 07:29) James lost his dad at 20, which led to some difficult moments including a drinking problem which culminated in a DUI. The DUI forced him to reevaluate his life, figure out what hole he was filling with alcohol, and learn that honesty and addiction don’t go together.   The lessons from the loss take time to reveal themselves (21:45 - 23:05 ) A crucible is never a catalyst in the moment. If the crucible is a gift and it’s wrapped, then you have to unpack it and figure out what that pain is about. It’s not about reframing something in the moment because that’s more denial than healing. The healing won’t happen in the timeframe you want it in and that’s okay.   Why we shouldn’t rush the process of developing something  (24:32-  25:01 ) The process of developing an idea may not be perfect, but it is necessary and valuable. It’s never about that first idea, it’s about talking to someone about that first idea that spurs on the next set of ideas, and gets us to THE idea.   It’s easy to find the bad in in adversity, but the real gold is in seeing the good in it. We have to have our adversity moments, and we have to love them and live them, pull them apart and figure out what the good is in them. Leaders that embrace their adversity, grew their self-awareness, started to act with compassion because their adversity made them understand people better. This doesn’t just make us better in business, it makes us better in life as whole.   Guest Bio Dr. James Kelley is a professor of marketing at the United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain, Dubai, the host of the Executives After Hours podcast, and the author of The Crucible’s Gift: 5 Lessons from Authentic Leaders Who Thrive in Adversity. Dr. James Kelley, author of The Crucibles Gift: 5 Lessons from Authentic Leaders Who Thrive in Adversity, brings a fresh perspective to leadership coaching and keynotes. His journey from a humble home in Portland, Oregon to earning his PhD and living near Dubai with his wife and four children is full of adversity. James also has a keen interest in the adversity that shapes great leaders around the world. ----- What does an authentic leader look like? Dr. James Kelley has some ideas, thanks to his long work with business leader biographies and his own life experiences. In his remarkable book The Crucible’s Gift: 5 Lessons from Authentic Leaders Who Thrive in Adversity, he narrows down the common traits that authentic leaders have and how we can practice them in our leadership positions to make a difference. While our discussion covered many excellent topics, I’d like to talk about three different points Dr. Kelley made which struck me as particularly important: Self-Awareness: Business leaders have trouble with self-awareness, especially if they already have a profile of their own strengths and weaknesses, which may not be that accurate. Truly self-aware leaders know to make space for honest feedback and to understand that they always have more to learn about themselves. Compassion: Compassion is sometimes seen as a weakness in the business world, but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, compassion shows strength, understanding, and the ability to bind teams together and help their care about company goals. It’s one of the most valuable traits inauthentic leaders. Accepting Your Flaws: Understanding that you are flawed can be difficult. Accepting those flaws and finding ways to work around them is even harder. But the best leaders understand their flaws and then use them to become even better, creating support systems and using their experiences to help others around them. Throughout our conversation, Dr. Kelley provided life stories, advice from his experience with other business leaders, and many insights into the ways that you can more effective and self-aware – including methods to spot the “micro-moments of meaning” in your daily life and capitalize on them. Dr. James Kelley is the author of The Crucible's Gift and a professor of marketing at the United Arab Emirates University. In today's episode, he sits with Christopher Lochhead to talk about why failure and losery make us who we are, why every crucible moment is a gift, and why being an authentic leader matters. "The reality is if I just step back, the only person I need to prove myself to is me." - Dr. James Kelley Three Things We Learned The struggle of proving oneself Dr. James Kelley has had an ongoing struggle of wanting to prove himself to somebody. This constant bout of inadequacy all stems back to a time when he felt like he wasn't the kid that could amount to anything. But in the end, he knows that he can only do so much about what other people think. Striking the balance between family and profession There's a fine line between being great at our career and doing a great job family-wise. Whatever our profession, we all want to achieve a level of mastery, success, and recognition in our field. But ultimately, the people we need to be kindest to are the same people who will take care of us when we're past our prime and have done what we must. Writing to be part of a crowd can be hard Dr. Kelley admits that writing a book is tantamount to being part of a group of people who have written nice books, bias and all. But he also confesses to feeling like he could've done better, that there are parts he could've made stronger. If he were to rewrite these parts, the book perhaps wouldn't be any better, but at least he could be happier. Some people have gone out of their way to do their own thing while others are trying to jump in. Some people write books to capture moments in their lives or to capture history of their long-standing endeavors. We all have different journeys, crucible moments included, and we're all trying to get through them. Bio: Who is Dr. James Kelley? His path is still being built brick by brick and the current brick is his inaugural book: The Crucible's Gift: Five Lessons from Authentic Leaders Who Thrive in Adversity. Prior this miraculous event, James spent time living in Japan, New York City, San Jose, Portland, and Chicago. At each stop James added work, life, and failure in his bag of experiences. Tune in for a fun and informal conversation with your hosts and Dr. James Kelley! 5 Golden Nuggets Shared:In life it’s important to be authentic. A true leader is authentic, relatable, and guides others based on the adversities they have overcome.  Make sure to look at the positives of adversity and also learn to live with the sorrows of adversity. Both are key in truly overcoming an adversity and growing from it!  Listen with intent. Don’t think about how you can interject your own wisdom, but rather listen to what they are really saying.  Without a learning mindset, you won’t grow or develop.  Acknowledge that fear is a valid emotion, but don’t let it control you. Push through the fear and see how much you grow from it.  3 Bold and Kick-Ass Quotes: “Who you are defines what you do.” - James Kelley“As competitive people, sometimes we get so caught up in trying to be right that we forget the moments of doing right instead.” - James Kelley“Don’t let fear conquer you, conquer your fear.” - James Kelley Click the hyperlink below to connect directly with James!Website: https://www.drjameskelley.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/executivesafterhours Twitter: https://twitter.com/kelleyjamesb LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kelleyjamesb/ Click the hyperlink below to connect directly with us!Website: http://www.ThinkBoldBeBold.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThinkBoldBeBold/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinkboldbebold/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thinkboldbebold Sponsored by Mavericks Mastermind Until next time, Do Something Nice for Someone! Dr. James Kelley Vroom Veer Stories The book idea was a combination of his life and his podcast interviews with about 140 executives Grew up in South East Portland the youngest of 3.5 children in a 900 square foot home and six people Didn't do many vacations; didn't do a lot; didn't have a lot Grew up in an Irish Catholic household;  a touch of violence and not much Catholicism plus all the guilt--no weekly Mass Mom was a martyr and great at guilting As the youngest of 3 you learn by watching your older siblings get caught and punished; and learn ways not to get caught His family was kinda dysfunctional (like most maybe?); he doesn't communicate with his siblings; he does talk with some of his half-brother's kids He was the youngest by 5 years; so the older siblings didn't want to play with him; his parents were busy and exhausted; and he didn't have kids to play with; he became almost too good at self evaluation to the point of being overly self-critical Thankfully James' wife had a very self-confident mother who always found the good in mistakes; now when James looses his cool he points out (loudly) that mom is a better at communication His dad would give you a smack if they held the fork wrong; or didn't say "Yes sir or No Sir" When you make a child fell weak and insignificant; you destroy self confidence James realized now that his parents did their best with what they had; they didn't intend to screw him up Got into college because he played sports in spite of his 2.5 GPA out of High School His first year in college didn't scream "future Grad student" Sports took 25 hours a week; he also had a part time job; GPA was a 2.0 so he quit Went back to Portland to be with his then girlfriend (he was in LOVE!); had a job selling cars and was offered some "white powder" In the "white powder" moment he saw himself in two futures; in a orange jump suit in prison; or graduating college; so he called mom and said he wanted to go back to college So we went back to college in Dayton; and two years into that his Dad pass away at age 49 The grief hit him very had; he dove head first into a drinking habit The only reason he graduated college was because his girlfriend at the time spent a lot time at the library studying and he wanted to be near her Sorta of drifted into a Master's Degree program in Chicago; was working a couple of jobs and constantly broke Moved to Portland and talked himself into a job that he was totally unqualified for 12 months into that job he had a complete emotional break down; his admin assistant found him as white as a ghost; shaking with the sweats Then he gets a DUI the punishment for which James credits for saving his life; out patient program (rehab) six months of 3.5 days a week 3 hours per class; six more months it was once a week for 3 hours; then a year of therapy It was really eye opening to see the power of addiction; he listened to many other men and women create a lie to serve their addiction; and he choose the path of accepting responsibility and really trying to learn something about himself

You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re at the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, coach, and former Division I All-American wrestler that helps motivated former athletes to reach their full potential by getting clarity on what they really want and taking aggressive action to lead their ideal life not just despite their prior failures but because of them. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You Are Here You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not tried, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as someone who aims high. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by failure, struggle, and adversity, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far.
