Right now, the Oregon legislature is considering a bill that would establish the Oregon Kids' Credit. This state child tax credit would put money in the pockets of the families with the fewest resources, helping them cover the rent, pay for food and other essentials. The need for a state child tax credit became all the more urgent after Congress failed to renew the enhanced federal child tax credit that did so much to reduce poverty in our nation in 2021.We discuss the Oregon Kids' Credit proposal with two of its champions, State Representatives Andrea Valderrama and Lisa Reynolds. But first we look at how the enhanced federal child tax credit made a crucial difference in the life of one family in Oregon.

The LGBTQGM ("G" is for Gr**mer and "M" is for Monkeypox) community is back, and it is infecting the world with a new disease. However, it's homophobic to even mention where it comes from. Even right-wing pundits say it's bigoted to tell the truth about who is spreading the disease. That's why we brought in some very NOT gay women to discuss the insanity of our world and how nobody is willing to speak the truth anymore in America. In fact, we are punished for stating the facts. In this week's episode, Chris speaks with Spencer Clancy, the System Director for Talent Development and Culture for CHRISTUS Health. Spencer talks about the impact mentors have had on his career trajectory. Watch to learn how important mentors are to creating the next generation of leaders. Spencer has had many mentors throughout his life both spiritual and professional. He met his first mentor during graduate school who helped him land an internship. This opportunity allowed him to pursue what he wanted to do later in his career. Through the amazing mentoring of this individual, he went into his first leadership position at The Vincit Group. From there, he met an individual working as a leader at CHRISTUS Health, and they talked about their career paths. It was because of this conversation that he was offered an opportunity at CHRISTUS HEALTH. Even though he couldn't commit to the job at the time he was still amazed at the organization's leaders. When he was given another chance to join the company he didn't hesitate to accept. It was at CHRISTUS HEALTH that he met his two new mentors, Lisa Reynolds and Karen Hale. These two leaders showed Spencer what true leadership was through example. They taught Spencer that his initial thoughts on leadership were completely different from true leadership. These leaders always put their teams first and were consistently there for their teams. Spencer used the insights he learned from his mentors for his first formal leadership position at CHRISTUS HEALTH. Spencer found that this leadership style applied to more than just leaders in the professional world. He eventually saw faith as more than just something he learned at school. This was possible through the help of his spiritual mentor, Josh. He helped Spencer look deeply into his faith and to read scripture solely because he wanted to know more. Spencer hopes to do the same for other individuals who are in the same situation. Now, he joins us on the Virtuous Heroes Podcast to talk with us. His insights will allow viewers to become true leaders by learning the importance of mentoring.More about our guest: Spencer leads a team of learning & development professionals focused on creating moments that matter for their Leaders and Associates.Specialties: leadership development strategy, performance management strategy, design and implementation of employee development programs, project management, education design, and program facilitation.Spencer received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Maryville College. Spencer then went on to complete a Master's Degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------https://www.linkedin.com/in/spencerclancy/https://www.christushealth.org/
In this episode, Chris speaks with Lisa Reynolds, Vice President of Change Management at CHRISTUS Health, about her journey with overcoming herself and how she learned to let go of herself and become less of a people pleaser. Watch to learn how Lisa uses feedback, encouragement from others, and faith to become a successful leader. Growing up as a middle child, Lisa always felt like she had to keep the peace. This led to her developing people pleasing habits, which negatively impacted her. Now after 18 years with CHRISTUS she is able to look back and see where she made changes in herself and where she was able to evolve her role. One important moment for this was a forum with Tony Robbins, which she described as life changing. Lisa was able to identify that she needed to be more assertive, confident, and courageous. Through her own journey of self-discovery, Lisa now helps leaders and employees in CHRISTUS adjust and change to new initiatives. As someone who places importance on personal values, Lisa felt that CHRISTUS was the perfect setting for her. CHRISTUS emphasizes charity healthcare, and as a lifelong Catholic, Lisa enjoys working for an organization that so closely aligns with her values. With 18 years at CHRISTUS Health and 25 years with HR leadership, follow Lisa's advice to see how you can connect your work life and personal life to become the best version of yourself. More about our guest:Lisa is an executive HR leader who is a development chemist. She serves as a catalyst that enables others to see their full potential and ignite their passion. I know we have talked about how Big Tobacco fights flavoring bans at the local level, and today on the podcast, we talk about a county trying to fight back against flavored tobacco. Flavors are designed to hook new users to nicotine products. On this episode, I am joined by Carrie Nyssen of the American Lung Association, who describes the current battle for the health of kids that is on the May ballot in Washington County. Dr. Lisa Reynolds has practiced pediatrics for over 20 years in Washington County, serves in the OR legislature, and shares her perspective. Dr. Maxine Dexter is a fellow lung and ICU doctor for adults, and represents many of the people in Washington County in the Oregon House. Today we cover a specific example of a population of kids affected by flavored tobacco, the toll of flavored nicotine products, and what we can do about it. We also walk through many of the arguments opposed to these bans and why they are often misleading. To Do: - If you are in Washington County, OR, please vote NO on measure 34-314 on the May 2022 ballot and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same. If you live outside Washington County but know voters inside it, please reach out to make sure they vote. Go to FlavorsHookOregonKids.org to learn more. - Post on social media and consider writing an Op-Ed about why you support a ban on flavored nicotine products. - Find out if there is a flavor ban being considered in your county or state, and do what you can to support it. - Write to your members of Congress and ask them to take action against flavored nicotine at the national level. - Learn more about flavored tobacco, the history of menthol and targeting of the black community, as well as other tactics by Big Tobacco by listening to the podcast episode “A Heartbreaking Trap” and reading accompanying materials here. - Learn more about health effects of e-cigarettes in the podcast episode “Gambling with Your Lungs” and reading more here. Learn more about the impact of flavors here. - Learn more about how you or a loved one can break free of the nicotine habit here. - Donate to the American Lung Association to help amazing people like Carrie keep advocating for the health of our communities. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visit blog post for more information, or go to airhealthourhealth.org. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/airhealthourhealth/message

How do you successfully manage change within your organziation? The key is to remember that change impacts PEOPLE - and you need to ensure they feel seen, heard and valued in the process before any change can happen. That requires hiring leaders with high emotional intelligence.Today's guest, Lisa Reynolds, is the vice president of change management at CHRISTUS Health, an organization that is 50,000+ strong. Despite the organization's large size, Lisa is able to connect associates to corporate strategy, coaching leadership teams, and individuals to manage organizational transformation, including helping people adopt culture strategies, processes, and system implementations. Listen in and hear the secret ingredient of making sure that your change initiatives take root, no matter how big or how small the organization, and how to hire for emotional intelligence and empathy. Key Takeaways:Resistance is a normal reaction to change. As leaders, we can plan for that resistance and, with empathy, lead our team through the change rather than rushing them through it. In every interview, before you can assess someone else's EQ, you need to check your own EQ and be aware of your own biases.“Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could - some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in. Forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is the new day; you shall begin it serenely and with to highest spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson "We tend to hire people for their IQ, but people get promoted by their EQ. If you don't listen and just drive, drive, drive, without involving people, that's when it impacts your career." — Lisa Reynolds, Ph.D. SPHR About Lisa Reynolds: Vice President of Change Management - CHRISTUS HealthLisa has been with CHRISTUS Health for over 20 years and is the Vice President of Change Management. Beyond the Rut in 2017Beyond the Rut is a podcast about encouraging, inspiring, and equipping you to make your own path and live the life you've always dreamed of beyond the rut. Many of our listeners have expressed over the years how they have a good job, they love their families, but life somehow seems to be an unfulfilled rut. There is something more they have dreamed of for their families and struggle to find a way to pursue that. Those dreams vary from person to person, because we are each a unique creation. That's where Beyond the Rut comes in. We have had the pleasure and honor to hold conversations with people just like you who have found their own paths. Our hope is that these stories have in some way helped you take that first step or that next step to reaching your dreams. We are sharing with you in this episode our five favorite moments from all those interviews conducted in 2017. This was a tough list to come up with as we felt all our interviews were great. These five clips, however, encapsulate what our message has been about: Find a creative way to fund your dream and move forward anyway. You aren't meant to make everyone happy. Apply your special gifts and talents to meet a special need. Find great coaches and mentors to propel you on your journey. Help others. Others will help you, too. There is no excuse to not learn what you need to know and make someone else's job easier.Special ThanksWe'd like to give special thanks to Sara McDaniel, Patti Centeno and Jody Maberry who connected us with these great people. This show would not have been able to share the wisdom of anyone we interviewed in 2017 with people like you sharing your circles of influence with us.Links and ResourcesBtR 107 - Travel Tall Homecoming with Eric GiulianiBtR 091 - Discarding the Myth of the Starving Artist with Jeff GoinsBtR 082 - Energize Your Way Out of a Job Jail Rut with Dondi ScumaciBtR 075 - Lisa Reynolds on Leading through RelationshipsBtR 072 - Creating Career Magic with Lee CockerellEric's website where you can see all of his travels, TravelTall.com.Jeff Goins can be found at GoinsWriter.com and also has a podcast called The Portfolio Life which is available on iTunes, Stitcher and Google Play Music.Want to energize your career, or have Dondi speak at your next company training?
