Mike Pingleton returns to Snake Talk to discuss one of the greatest field herping destinations in North America, Snake Road. Dr. Jenkins has wanted to do a place-based field herping episode but had concerns about increasing visitation to sites or ‘spot burning'. Ultimately, Snake Road was the perfect destination to discuss, as it is widely known by field herpers and the general public alike. Mike and Chris talk about the landscape and the species of Snake Road, as well as the regulations in place that will keep this place such a special destination into the future. So whilst field Herping can be the best of times, it can be a pretty dangerous hobby, by the nature of the species, if venomous, the locations you find them in remote, extreme temperatures, weather, the potential for accidents, foreign diseases, tiredness, hunger and all manner of interesting things, sometimes it turns real bad real quick. Field Herping is a rapidly growing form of recreation where people go into wildplaces and look for reptiles and amphibians (especially snakes). You can think of Field Herping as being analogous to birding but with the big difference in that most of time it is possible to catch the snake. Field Herping is exciting and most of us do some form of it but it is important to develop an ethic around your practices. In this podcast Chris talks with Houston Chandler and Kiley Briggs about Field Herping and potential issues that everyone should consider before recreationally looking for snakes.
