In this episode of the "How to Protect the Ocean" podcast, host Andrew Lewin discusses the significant return of the Southern Resident orca population, specifically L-Pod, to Penn Cove, Washington, after more than 50 years. This return is particularly poignant given the tragic history of the area, where in the 1970s, a brutal capture event took place. During this event, 80 orcas were corralled using bombs and boats, resulting in the deaths of five orcas and the capture of many others, including Tokite, also known as Lolita, who spent 50 years in captivity before passing away in 2023. The emotional response from the local community and researchers upon witnessing the orcas return to Penn Cove was captured in videos, marking a full-circle moment for a population that has faced significant trauma. While the reasons for their return remain unclear—whether it was due to food availability or exploration—the event symbolizes hope for the future of the critically endangered Southern Resident orcas, whose numbers have dwindled from around 150 individuals to just 71-73 today. Lewin emphasizes the importance of protecting the orcas' habitat and food sources, particularly their preferred prey, salmon, which has been declining due to various environmental factors. The episode highlights the resilience of these intelligent creatures and the joy of their return, serving as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to ensure their survival and recovery. Our Fall 2024 Bird of Prey Workshop focused on key topics such as managing fear and aggression in raptors using the constructional approach and non-coercive negative reinforcement and using progressive weight management techniques. Handling fear-based reactions, like those seen in a juvenile bald eagle, requires careful arrangement of the environment and building skills with your bird to have more reinforceable behaviors. The workshop also highlighted the importance of fitness and motivation over strict weight control, ensuring the bird's health and well-being remain a priority. Training your bird for transportation isn't just an important part of education programming, it's a good life skill to have. For wildlife rehabilitation organizations, nature centers, and other small bird of prey centers, this is an essential skill that trainers rely on. For companion parrot people, this is an important behavior to trainer before it is needed in case of emergencies. This episode is an excerpt from our roadmap on Your Bird's First Education Program inside the Avian Behavior Lab. It's full of tactical advice on how to shape calm behavior for riding comfortably in a crate in a vehicle. We talk about what to do about tidbitting, why we don't use food very much to shape this behavior, and what we use to reinforce with instead. We discuss challenges with equipment and how to use context to shape the behavior. Support courses in the Avian Behavior Lab include our latest updated version of Crate Training, the roadmap, Creating a Training Program, and How to use context to shape a behavior.

She dispelled some myths about wildlife and gave some ideas about how to keep you and your pets safe.
Host Gail Buhl welcomes Washington state based mental health therapist Tiffany Wentz-Root to the podcast to discuss self-care for wildlife rehabilitators. This is Part 1 of 2. In Part 1, Tiffany explains her origin story, which includes serving in Iraq for the U.S. Marine Corps in 2003. Tiffany goes on to reveal some of her own past struggles with mental health, how that experience led to her interest in becoming a mental health provider, and how she draws on her experiences to cultivate greater empathy for vulnerable populations she serves. Gail and Tiffany begin to discuss the phenomenon of "compassion fatigue," a specific type of burnout seen most often in caretaking professions that witness suffering of animals or fellow humans. Tiffany describes the broader theme of burnout as an imbalance between stress and the ability to cope. Compassion fatigue arises out of vicarious trauma, Tiffany explains, which is experienced when the caretaker witnesses suffering of their patient. The episode includes some signs and symptoms of unaddressed trauma such as changes in eating habits, diminished memory, and sleep difficulty. In Part 2, episode 13, Gail and Tiffany will continue the conversation on maintaining self awareness of one's own mental health and things to do to move forward when feeling stuck in burnout.Special thanks to Partners For Wildlife and The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. In episode 9, Gail Buhl welcomes Amanda Nicholson back to the podcast. If you missed Amanda's first appearance on Wildlife Rehabilitation: From Rescue To Release, check out season 2, episode 13. There she talks with Gail about social media best practices in wildlife rehabilitation.Amanda serves as Senior Vice President of the Wildlife Center of Virginia. In this episode, she virtually visits Gail to talk about having crucial conversations -- those sometimes difficult or touchy talks we have to have with our partners, bosses, employees, or even someone checking on the status of an animal in rehabilitation. Amanda offers some basic guidance on keeping these conversations structured and simple while offering the other person as much autonomy and dignity as possible. She urges the listener to be especially careful about not filling in the blanks with a (often negative) made-up story explaining someone's behavior or point of view. This is a must-listen for anyone working in wildlife rehabilitation, because these conversations come up so frequently. Next episode, Gail talks with wildlife veterinarian Miranda Torkelson about the red fox. It's a fascinating in-depth, 2-part discussion on the red fox's natural history and techniques for caring for it with the goal of release back into the wild. Have you ever thought about how fragile birds can live after an oil spill? Join us for an enlightening conversation with JD Bergeron, the CEO of International Bird Rescue, where we find out the amazing story behind the organization's noble goal of saving oiled birds. Starting with the oil spill in California in 1971 and ending with the discovery that dish soap is a good way to clean feathers, JD talks about the organization's interesting past and the challenges it faces today.Oil spill reaction is hard because there are a lot of rules and regulations, and JD helps us understand how different states and countries handle these kinds of disasters. From Alaska to California and Russia to South Africa, we look at the different rules and problems that come with dealing with oil spills and how they affect wildlife. We also talk about the science behind birds that have been cleaned of oil and how bird bands can be used to keep track of how long they live.Lastly, we talk about what the pandemic means for birds and the future of bird conservation in general. With the highly pathogenic bird flu spreading across the West Coast and it being hard to treat birds with no symptoms, JD talks about how the increased attention to our feathered friends during the pandemic has changed their job. Together, we talk about how important it is to keep helping and getting involved in bird protection, and we encourage people to join us and make a difference.Don't miss this show with JD from International Bird Rescue, which is full of great ideas!-----TIME STAMPS:(00:07) - Saving Birds From Oil Spills(08:06) - Oil Spill Response and Wildlife Rehabilitation(19:16) - Protecting Birds During Pandemic Subscribe to Saving Tomorrow's Planet Podcast Apple Spotify

In this session of our Behavior Makeover Series, we work with a rehabilitated non-releasable raven that is showing a lot of avoidance behavior around his trainer. We create a behavior shaping plan using non-coercive negative reinforcement instead of counter conditioning or systematic desensitization to build the raven's trust. This works on all species, from parrots to eagles and mammals too. As always, follow your local and federal laws when working with native and exotic species and we do not condone rescuing wild birds without proper permits. Who has one of the coolest jobs ever? Our vote goes to Bethany Brown, founder of the Saco River Wildlife Sanctuary in Maine in 2015. Listen as Bethany shares tales of rehabilitating all kinds of critters, including racoons, foxes, opossums, skunks, porcupines, squirrels, coyotes, fisher cats and even bats! The Sanctuary takes in over 800 animals annually (and ever-growing) with the goal of setting them free in their natural habitat once healthy. Bethany educates us about what to do if we find an animal in distress (it is not likely what you think) and also dispels some common myths about various species. Education is key to understanding how important wildlife rehabilitators are to protecting, preserving, and rehabilitating the wildlife that keeps our local ecosystems in balance. Fun fact: did you know that an opossum is called a "yard angel" due to all the good things it does? Go to sacoriverwildlifecenter.org for more information. " It is not enough to rescue these animals from illegal trafficking. They must be given the opportunity to recover properly. They must be given a real chance at survival, not just at a rescue station, but back in the wild, where they can contribute to genetic diversity and the continuation of their species in these areas. Jungle Rescue Reform is committed to aiding in this cause and making a difference for these animals and the species to which they belong." Joey, founder - Jungle Rescue Reform Our guest is Joey Solimine, she is a veterinary nurse, wildlife conservationist, conservation student, and the founder of Jungle Rescue Reform. Joey studied Animal Science and Pre-Veterinary Medicine at Rutgers University and is currently studying Wildlife Conservation Biology through Unity College of Maine. She travels to wildlife rehabilitation centers across Central and South America, predominantly in the Amazon region, where she helps rehabilitate, medically care for, research and eventually release wildlife victims of illegal pet trade. She has been traveling to and working in the jungle for almost 7 years now, doing research on ethical wildlife rehabilitation practices, controversies, and successful rehabilitation, with a focus on primate behavior and how primate cognitive complexities may complicate the rehabilitation process and what we think we know about it. Her goal is to help build on what we know about rehabilitating wildlife that were once held as pets or used as tourist attractions, especially primates. Her organization Jungle Rescue Reform also aims to help bring funding and support to wildlife rescue centers operating in remote parts of the world, with a focus on the Amazon rainforest, they also aim to advocate for locals who run these sanctuaries, and to bridge the gaps that exist between the experts and the professionals; the science and the first hand experience of those native to those jungle areas.
