Astronomy Daily - The Podcast: 21st September 2024Welcome to Astronomy Daily, your go-to source for the latest space and Astronomy news. I'm your host, Anna, and today we have an episode packed with groundbreaking stories. From India's ambitious new space projects and SpaceX's plans to catch Starship, to exciting discoveries about water on the moon, groundbreaking observations from a new X-ray telescope, and concerns about satellite interference with radio Astronomy. Let's dive right in!Highlights:- India's Space Ambitions: India has greenlit an ambitious slate of space projects, allocating a substantial $2.7 billion to push the boundaries of its space capabilities. At the forefront is the Chandrayaan IV mission, a bold lunar sample return effort targeting the moon's south pole. Equally exciting is the Shukrayan mission, India's first Venus orbiter, now targeted for 2028. Perhaps most ambitious is the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), India's first space station module, slated for launch by the end of 2028 with full operational status expected by 2035. These projects highlight India's growing expertise and determination to become a key player in the global space arena.- SpaceX's Starship Catching Plans: SpaceX is gearing up for another groundbreaking achievement with its upcoming Starship test flight. The company plans to catch the massive Super Heavy first stage booster using the chopstick arms of the launch tower at their Starbase facility in Texas. This ambitious maneuver, if successful, would take rocket reusability to the next level, dramatically reducing turnaround time between flights. Regulatory reviews have delayed the launch, but the FAA is expected to complete its assessment by late November.- Chinese Reusable Rocket Technology: Chinese private space companies, Deep Blue Aerospace and Landspace, are making significant strides in developing reusable rocket technology. Both firms have conducted impressive high-altitude hop tests with their prototype vehicles, aiming to develop fully reusable orbital launchers. These tests represent significant progress for China's commercial space sector, working towards cost-effective reusable launch capabilities.- Abundant Water on the Moon: New research reveals that water is far more abundant on the moon than previously thought. Data from NASA's Moon Mineralogy Mapper shows that water and hydroxyl molecules are widespread across the lunar surface, not just confined to the poles. This discovery opens up possibilities for more flexible mission planning and could reduce the need to transport water from Earth, making long-term lunar missions more sustainable.- XRISM's Groundbreaking Observations: Japan's X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) has unveiled its first results, capturing stunning observations of a supermassive black hole in galaxy NGC 4151 and a supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These observations are revolutionizing our understanding of the X-ray universe, with over 3000 proposals submitted for future studies.- Satellite Interference with Radio Astronomy: New research reveals that SpaceX's second-generation V2 mini Starlink satellites are emitting up to 32 times more radio waves than their predecessors, posing a significant threat to radio Astronomy. This underscores the urgent need for dialogue between the Astronomy community and satellite companies to find solutions that allow both Internet access and scientific research to coexist. For more space news, be sure to visit our website at astronomydaily.io. Line Emission Mapper LEM : Probing the physics of cosmic ecosystems by Ralph Kraft et al. on Wednesday 23 November The Line Emission Mapper (LEM) is an X-ray Probe for the 2030s that will answer the outstanding questions of the Universe's structure formation. It will also provide transformative new observing capabilities for every area of astrophysics, and to heliophysics and planetary physics as well. LEM's main goal is a comprehensive look at the physics of galaxy formation, including stellar and black-hole feedback and flows of baryonic matter into and out of galaxies. These processes are best studied in X-rays, and emission-line mapping is the pressing need in this area. LEM will use a large microcalorimeter array/IFU, covering a 30x30' field with 10" angular resolution, to map the soft X-ray line emission from objects that constitute galactic ecosystems. These include supernova remnants, star-forming regions, superbubbles, galactic outflows (such as the Fermi/eROSITA bubbles in the Milky Way and their analogs in other galaxies), the Circumgalactic Medium in the Milky Way and other galaxies, and the Intergalactic Medium at the outskirts and beyond the confines of galaxies and clusters. LEM's 1-2 eV spectral resolution in the 0.2-2 keV band will make it possible to disentangle the faintest emission lines in those objects from the bright Milky Way foreground, providing groundbreaking measurements of the physics of these plasmas, from temperatures, densities, chemical composition to gas dynamics. While LEM's main focus is on galaxy formation, it will provide transformative capability for all classes of astrophysical objects, from the Earth's magnetosphere, planets and comets to the interstellar medium and X-ray binaries in nearby galaxies, AGN, and cooling gas in galaxy clusters. In addition to pointed observations, LEM will perform a shallow all-sky survey that will dramatically expand the discovery space. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.09827v2

The Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper: Design and First Light by Seery Chen et al. on Sunday 18 September The Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper (DSLM) is the latest evolution of the Dragonfly Telephoto Array, which turns it into the world's most powerful wide-field spectral line imager. The DSLM will be the equivalent of a 1.6m aperture $f$/0.26 refractor with a built-in Integral Field Spectrometer, covering a five square degree field of view. The new telescope is designed to carry out ultra-narrow bandpass imaging of the low surface brightness universe with exquisite control over systematic errors, including real-time calibration of atmospheric variations in airglow. The key to Dragonfly's transformation is the "Filter-Tilter", a mechanical assembly which holds ultra-narrow bandpass interference filters in front of each lens in the array and tilts them to smoothly shift their central wavelength. Here we describe our development process based on rapid prototyping, iterative design, and mass production. This process has resulted in numerous improvements to the design of the DSLM from the initial pathfinder instrument, including changes to narrower bandpass filters and the addition of a suite of calibration filters for continuum light subtraction and sky line monitoring. Improvements have also been made to the electronics and hardware of the array, which improve tilting accuracy, rigidity and light baffling. Here we present laboratory and on-sky measurements from the deployment of the first bank of lenses in May 2022, and a progress report on the completion of the full array in early 2023. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.07489v1

The pathfinder Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper: Pushing the limits for ultra-low surface brightness spectroscopy by Deborah M. Lokhorst et al. on Sunday 18 September The pathfinder Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper is a distributed aperture telescope based off of the Dragonfly Telephoto Array with additional instrumentation (the Dragonfly "Filter-Tilter") to enable ultranarrow bandpass imaging. The pathfinder is composed of three redundant optical tube assemblies (OTAs) which are mounted together to form a single field of view imaging telescope (where the effective aperture diameter increases as the square-root of the number of OTAs). The pathfinder has been on sky from March 2020 to October 2021 equipped with narrowband filters to provide proof-of-concept imaging, surface brightness limit measurements, on sky testing, and observing software development. Here we describe the pathfinder telescope and the sensitivity limits reached along with observing methods. We outline the current limiting factors for reaching ultra-low surface brightnesses and present a comprehensive comparison of instrument sensitivities to low surface brightness line emission and other methods of observing the ultra-faint line emission from diffuse gas. Finally, we touch on plans for the upcoming 120-OTA Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper, which is currently under construction. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.07487v1

AKA The Geoholics Christmas Episode. Well...I think it's safe to say that when we started this podcast a couple years ago...we never could have dreamt of having an opportunity to talk to a real dinosaur hunter. This week the boys did just that! Tom Hebert is a paleontologist from Wisconsin who you may know from the October 2021 XHYT article by Jeff Thoreson titled "Breaking Old Ground". This article documented how Tom, his daughter and the folks from Carlson Software are incorporating paleontology and surveying to build a GIS based map of findings and dig sites. Little did Tom know, that this passion was going to turn into what is now nearly a fulltime effort known as FossilPedia. We discussed paleontology vs archaeology, how Tom's love for dinosaur hunting began (thanks to his daughter!), the generosity and belief that Carlson Software had in him and his efforts, why the idea of a GIS based map of paleontological dig is important, how Tom determines the location of the next dinosaur hunt and what he has in store for 2022 and beyond. The guys had their annual Geoholics Xmas gift exchange...PJ bought 3 monkeys...BS saw Santa Claus with a tear in his eye and DD says "Don't be a messy Elf." Some touching Santa Claus quotes were shared. Music for this episode by My Chemical Romance!! Merry Christmas Everyone!!
