Fred Peterson has been making wines in Sonoma County for more than 40 years. While attending UC Santa Cruz, he took a job in a classmate's family vineyard in Mendocino County and he found his passion. He left Santa Cruz, and used the rest of his GI Education benefits to attend UC Davis. Photo: Peterson Winery. Credit: Wine for Normal People Fred got his bachelor's degree in Viticulture and Enology in 1978. And after managing vineyards for a large winery in the Central Coast, he moved to the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma in 1983. That same year, he planted a vineyard and built his house on Bradford Mountain. In 1987, Fred hung a shingle on a red barn off of Lytton Springs Road and Peterson was born. The winery is no longer in the red barn, but it remains an important part of their history and is represented on every wine label with a back drop of Bradford Mountain, where the Peterson Estate Vineyard is located. Courtesy of Peterson Winery In this (super dorky) show Fred takes us through some of the fascinating history of how philosophies about terroir and soil have changed since he started as a grower and winemaker in the early 1980s and how he has managed to be a leader in sustainable, but not dogmatic sustainable farming and winemaking. Fred was one of the first voices in Sonoma to promote low intervention farming and winemaking. It shows in the wines! Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. Alan Berkman (1945–2009) was a medical student and doctor who became radicalized by his experiences at the Wounded Knee takeover, at the Attica prison uprising, and at health clinics for the poor. He provided covert care to members of revolutionary groups, participated in bombings of government buildings and was eventually captured and served eight years in some of America's worst penitentiaries. After his release in 1992, he returned to medical practice and became an HIV/AIDS physician, teacher, and global health activist. He worked to change U.S. policy, making AIDS treatment more widely available in the global south and saving millions of lives around the world. Using Berkman's unfinished prison memoir, FBI records, letters, and hundreds of interviews, Susan Reverby sheds fascinating light on questions of political violence and revolutionary zeal in her account of Berkman's extraordinary transformation from doctor to co-conspirator for justice. Reverby has had a long and productive career in the Women's & Gender Studies department at Wellesley College. Her 1987 book, Ordered to Care: The Dilemma of American Nursing, brought the perspectives of the “new” labor history to nursing. She continued to explore the American medical system, editing Tuskegee's Truths: Rethinking the Tuskegee Syphilis Study (2000) and writing Examining Tuskegee: The Infamous Syphilis Study and Its Legacy (2009). She will be engaged in conversation with three members of the ESFL community who have read Co-Conspirator for Justice: Colette Hyman teaches US History at Winona State University and is the author of Staging Strikes: Workers' Theatre and the American Labor Movement in the 1930s (1997) and Dakota Women's Work: Creativity, Culture & Exile (2012). Art Serotoff is a long-time anti-racist activist based in south Minneapolis. Sara Olson spent seven years in a California prison for charges related to her involvement with the Symbionese Liberation Army in the 1970s. She is an activist with the Women's Prison Book Project. Fred Peterson worked as a bush doctor with Oxfam UK in Zimbabwe in 1981-82. He was a participant in the Twin Cities Committee for the Liberation of Southern Africa, and worked as an ER doc in St. Paul for many years.

I recorded this podcast at the Peterson Winery tasting room while I was visiting Sonoma in support of the Sonoma Underground event I co-founded (www.undergroundwineevents.com). This is a fascinating conversation with the force and Dry Creek Valley icon that is Fred Peterson, his son and Peterson's winemaker Jamie, and his daughter and head of sales and marketing, Emily. As Fred discusses, following time in the military, he studied viticulture and winemaking and graduated with honors from UC Davis. After working in and around Santa Cruz for prestigious wineries as a vineyard manager, Fred came to Dry Creek Valley in 1983 to find and develop world-class vineyard properties. Fred developed vineyards all over the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma County, including on Bradford Mountain, where most of the fruit for Peterson's top wine hails. In 1987, Fred, launched Peterson Winery. Peterson Winery now makes an average of 8000 cases annually, all in many small lots from estate vineyards and from like-minded growers and friends. Peterson produces many wines... - 3V White Blend- Vermentino, Verdelho, Vernaccia - Agraria — a proprietary Bordeaux/Cabernet Franc varietal blend - Barbera - Cabernet Sauvignon - Cabernet Sauvignon Port- dessert wine - Carignane - Grenache - Merlot - Mendo Blendo – Petite Sirah based blend - Muscat Blanc — Dessert Wine - Petite Sirah - Petit Verdot - Rosé - Sauvignon Blanc - Sangiovese — Dry Creek Valley and Il Granaio - Syrah - Vignobles- Red Rhone Style Blend - Zinfandels — Dry Creek Valley, Tradizionale, Bradford Mountain, Bernier Zinyard, Warren Ranch, & Old School - Zero Manipulation — an old-fashioned red blend Please support our sponsor this week, who helps make the podcast possible: Thanks to this week's sponsor who makes the podcast possible!
