Chapter 1:Summary of Ghost Girl"Ghost Girl" is a memoir by Torey L. Hayden, a special education teacher, that recounts her experiences with a troubled girl named Jadie in her classroom. The story takes place in the early 1980s and explores themes of trauma, abuse, and the complexities of the child-therapy relationship.Jadie is a quiet and withdrawn girl who exhibits signs of deep distress and trauma. As Torey works with her, she learns that Jadie has experienced significant abuse and neglect, which has led to her retreat into a world of imaginary friends and haunting visions. Throughout the memoir, Torey dedicates herself to helping Jadie uncover her past and navigate her emotions, often using innovative teaching and therapeutic techniques. The narrative emphasizes the impact of trauma on children's behavior and the importance of patience, understanding, and love in the healing process. This week I'm speaking to the wonderful Wharton, who is of Chinese and white European heritage. Wiz's debut nove, Ghost Girl, Banana follows Sook-Yin in 1960s England, exiled from Kowloon, and her daughter Lily in 1990s, embarking on a secret pilgrimage to Hong Kong to discover the lost side of her identity, following a mysterious letter telling her she has inherited a LOT of money from a stranger. It's no surprise that this sweeping story is being adapted for TV, and it is such a brilliant read.Wiz Wharton was born in London of Chinese-European heritage. She is a prize-winning graduate of the National Film and Television school, where she studied screenwriting under the filmmakers Mike Leigh, Stephen Frears and Kenith Trodd. Her debut novel Ghost Girl, Banana deals with issues of identity, belonging and familial secrets. In 2023, she was named by the Scottish Government Expo Fund as one of the 40 writers predicted to set the literary world alight. I'm so glad she's my guest today. Support the show

To this day people argue both sides – just as the court did in the 1940s. (Hellish Nell) *** They loved to drink, and party. They both loved kinky sex, fell in love, and decided to move in together. But their strongest bond would came later – when new couple decided to go on a killing spree. (The Sunset Strip Killers) *** No one could believe that mild-mannered Charlie Brandt had mutilated his wife and niece, until they discovered his grisly past… when he killed his mother when he was only thirteen. (Charlie Brandt Couldn't Stop Killing) *** Encountering the supernatural is no fun and games… unless it is. (Haunted Stuyvesant Hall) *** We've all seen plastic bags take on a personality when blown with a light breeze, seemingly dancing on their own power. But what if what we only thought that was a plastic bag in the wind? Could it have been something more? (Last Dance) *** They say, “be careful what you wish for”. That is especially true if you're doing your wishing through a spirit or Ouija board. (Wishing On the Ouija) *** The executioner tried three separate times to hang the man – rope around the neck, lever pulled… but John walked away alive each time. (The Man They Could Not Hang) *** How can you tell if you are seeing a ghost or something real if it looks as solid as anything else? (I Saw a Spirit) *** If you move into a house that looks like a scene from a horror movie, you probably shouldn't be surprised when you have an encounter with the paranormal. (Ghost Girl In The Old Room) *** The body of Gareth Williams was found stuffed inside a duffel, with the bag's zipper padlocked from the outside. Was it because he was discovered to be a spy? (The Spy In The Bag) *** A father and son tending to their horses are puzzled by how strange the horses were behaving – until they looked up. (Huge Bright UFO Hovered Over Horses) *** While bow hunting, a young man sees what he describes as a Bigfoot… which isn't something you often hear from a place like Kansas. (Bottomland Bigfoot in Eastern Kansas) *** On the way to the beach for some fun, two friends experience fear instead when confronted by a large winged creature. (Huge Winged Being) *** The Bethlem Royal Hospital insane asylum is so notorious that a word originally coined there entered the English language as a word for confusion and disorder… Bedlam (Bedlam – The Real Horror Story Behind the Name) *** Dorothy received phone calls regularly from a stalker, and it frightened her she considered buying a gun, and she began taking self-defense classes. But that didn't stop her from disappearing without a trace. Today we move onto writing the overture for Death Cab for Cutie. My relationship with DCFC goes back to 2011 when I wrote my first string arrangements for their Codes and Keys album. Shortly thereafter, we toured an orchestral collab set in 2012 with the Magik*Magik Orchestra. Because of this history, the writing process for DCFC felt so different from what it was like writing for The Postal Service. If writing for the Postal Service felt like being at a party with a bunch of people you don't know, writing for DCFC felt like grabbing tacos with an old friend. We've all felt it, but no one (to my knowledge) has ever named it. You know that feeling when you send your first draft of a fresh new idea, your baby, your precious to someone for their feedback? But you haven't heard anything back yet? What emotions do you feel? I feel relief. I feel like I've earned the right to rest and it feels incredible. Here's an episode dedicated to that special feeling. Tonight we welcome Allie Rose, a poet and author. we talk about her many supernatural experiences. " Throughout my childhood, I had paranormal experiences that still shake me to this day. My encounters with the unknown had such a big impact on my life that my fascination with the supernatural became a huge part of who I am-- so much so that as I grew up, parents of friends and people in school knew me by the nickname "ghost girl". As time passed, I began to search for answers by ghost hunting and researching the paranormal, which inevitably led to even more unsettling experiences. "Ghost Girl" is a collection of these experiences; some of them are dark and eerie and others are more lighthearted. I hope that by sharing my story, I can provide a sense of comradery for others whose lives have also been affected by the paranormal." -Allie Rose

You'll want to sleep with the lights on tonight after listening to this week's episode.Alissa starts us off with a story about chicken, cornbread, mashed potatoes and a blossoming friendship with a mysterious car salesman.Think you're safe from ghosts while at work? Think again. Britt tells of a ghost who hangs out in the stock room of a business causing all kinds of mischief. We've all heard of shadow people or dark figured beings who like to hang out in doorways and corners but Alissa shocks us all with a story about a light person. A glowing being who just might be interdimensional. Britt then shares a heartwarming story about a very helpful ghost who cooks, cleans, and feeds the children. The story warms our hearts even more when we discover it is grandma who is doing all of the helping.Keeping with the grandma theme. Alissa tells us about a grandma who likes to prank drivers by hanging out in the median of the highway, then jump into oncoming traffic. Only to disappear moments later.Have you ever had an electronic act so bizarre that you think it might be something supernatural? Well Britt's story is just that. A boy and a puppy have their life saved by a loud beeping refrigerator. Thanks fridge!Remember that light figure from before? Well Alissa has another compelling story about 3 small light figures that peace out when told to leave a very haunted apartment.Britt finishes off the night with a story of a newly engaged couple who see the exact same shadow person on the same night but at different times.Don't forget to checkout @hihellothere on all the socials and head over to hihellothere.art to see all of Jason's amazing work.Ghost stories, paranormal stories, work ghost, true story, ghost friend, mischievous ghost, light ghost, light man, shadow person, grandma ghost, helper ghost, electronic ghost, haunted house, haunted apartment, nashville ghost, shadow man, paranormal podcast, female podcast, pnw podcastSupport the showRemember to share the podcast with friends and we want to hear your stories! In this episode, Trevor sits down with Ally Malinenko, author of the middle-grade horror books Ghost Girl andThis Appearing House. Together, they talk about developing trends in middle-grade fiction, problems of discoverability in an increasingly corporatized literary market, and content challenges facing middle grade authors in school and public libraries across the country. They also discuss in-depth some of the themes and tropes of Ghost Girl, and how books like hers serve middle grade audiences in ways kids (and adults) still need. You can find more from Ally Malinenko via her website, allymalinenko.com, and you can order her books via most book retailers. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE Nature Lives Here Album and Ebook This book/album is dedicated to all the people helping spread the story of saving Mother Nature. To Carlos, Cynthia, Edward, Gaby, Joe, Joshua, Lawrence, Maritza, Olivia, and Tamara. May all the dreams we dream together come true.On Writing Nature Lives HereBy John KixMillerI was looking through some old notebooks where I've written ideas for songs. The vast majority of these ideas have not amounted to anything finished, but sometimes miracles occur. I found the opening verse of what became Nature Lives Here, all finished and ready for me to use. I really liked the verse, but it is totally pessimistic, and I realized that the shocking grief and sorrow of losing the world we love showed me how infinitely valuable and wonderful our world really is. The other four verses of the song begin with:The beauty of time passingIt flies before our eyesWe never saw in this way beforeThe wonder of our livesThese four verses just jumped out onto the page in two sittings. Mother Nature is real, and our earth is wonderful and irreplaceable beyond anything we can imagine. And because we humans are now a major force affecting the balance of Nature as the environment for life, we have become, whether we like it or not, stewards of life on earth. This responsibility is beyond argument. Fate has imposed this incredible responsibility upon us, and we must accept it and give all we can to creating a future for our children amid all life on earth. Failure will mean unendurable sorrow and grief. We'll fight for this world on and onDeep into the Great BeyondThere's everything to loveEverything to fearIt's planet earth in the universe andNature lives here CLICK HERE FOR "THE GHOST GIRL” PLAYLIST ON YOUTUBE! Let's celebrate this Halloween with stories that will make you afraid to be in your home, or at the very least, make you afraid to have the lights off at night.Alissa starts off strong with a story of a haunted house that nearly kills its tenant, has mysterious black birds stuck between windows, and forks that mysteriously become bent.As your goosebumps recover from that story, Britt comes at you with a tale from Australia of a woman who has a demon take over her home so forcefully every door in her home bursts open. Alissa finds her long lost skepticism and lets us know her theory. If you think attics are scary now, wait til you hear the story Alissa shares about a house that is haunted by a little girl who just wants to play. Britt then bums us all out with a tale of a mom with two young kids and a house that is haunted by the spirit of child and father who both tragically lost their lives in the home.Alissa brings us back up with a story of a child who plays with a friend in the house only to discover that their friend is really the spirit of their grandfather.Keeping with this haunted house theme, Britt shares a story about an old Victorian home that has haunted hidden cubby holes, finger snapping trunks, and balls that roll by some mysterious force. The episode is wrapped up with a tale about an old house under construction that awakens the spirit of a young girl who lets its owners know when she really doesn't like their house guests.Support the showRemember to share the podcast with friends and we want to hear your stories! Today MPs from all parties are holding a debate on a controversial pregnancy testing drug used widely in the 1960s and 1970s. It's expected that MPs from all parties will speak, including former Prime Minister Theresa May. In May, the High Court rejected a claim for compensation saying it could not proceed because there was no new evidence linking the tests with foetal harm. Marie Lyon, Chairwoman of the Association for Children Damaged by Hormone Pregnancy Tests and Hannah Bardell MP, Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group On Hormone Pregnancy Testing, join Nuala McGovern. In the last in our series Rebuilding My Life, Nuala speaks to Wiz Wharton, author of Ghost Girl, Banana. Wiz was sectioned under the Mental Health Act 24 years ago, which led to a diagnosis of bipolar. She was forced to confront her demons and work out what needed to change, including owning her identity as a British-Chinese woman and learning how to stand up to the racism she had experienced all her life. Exclusive reporting from The Guardian this week shows that cricket umpires were paid three times more to officiate the men's Hundred this summer than the women's. It comes just days after the England and Wales Cricket Board announced that the women's teams will get the same match fees as the men's. Nuala speaks to journalist Raf Nicholson. One of the last surviving Bletchley Park codebreakers has died aged 99. Margaret Betts was just 19 when she was headhunted to work on the project. Nuala speaks to Tessa Dunlop, author of The Bletchley Girls, to find out a bit more about her. Dame Shirley Bassey will become the first female solo artist in British history to be honoured with a stamp series. Welsh music journalist Jude Rogers joins Nuala.
Everything was fine when they moved into their new house. Shortly after moving in, she heard a child running around upstairs and thought it was her two-year-old and she was sound asleep. She decided it was just her imagination. Until one day she saw the little girl. And it wasn't her daughter. This week we examine one of nature's most humble creations: crabs. Turns out when you look closely at these little scuttlers, things get surprisingly existential — about how to come into being, how to survive chaos, and how to live. We even examine the possibility of evolutionary destiny. This ep is a two-parter, a double-decker crab cake of sorts. Served up on a bed of lettuce and beautiful weirdness. The first layer comes from producer Rachael Cusick, and is a story she told live on stage at Pop-Up Magazine (http://www.popupmagazine.com) as a part of their Fall of 2022 tour. It chronicles a cross-species love story between artist Mary Akers (http://maryakers.com/) and an overlooked pet store companion, a creature that even Chris Tudge (https://zpr.io/MyUNwPAaqewg) — the scientist dedicated to this creature, you could say — could not get a ring on. The second layer is cooked up by Lulu, who tries to understand why crabs keep evolving (according to recent work by Jo Wolfe (https://zpr.io/2GftY9RjbLkF), Heather Bracken-Grissom (https://zpr.io/HhvMVfnThp5P) and Javier Luque (https://zpr.io/s8CwvGFHcSM7)). SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING. Dan has his standard two stories, both have quite a bit of history attached to them! We'll explore numerous claims of encounters with the paranormal that all revolve around recently deceased country music legend, Loretta Lynn. Loretta was a firm believer in ghosts, precognitive dreams, and other paranormal phenomena. Then we'll cover hauntings related to a former subject of Dan's Timesuck podcast. Belle Gunness. Mrs. Hoingy Boingy Uff dah! Lynze has three chill inducing stories to tell today! She starts with her first two tales of haunted homes- they are similar and yet, very different. They both involve the spirit of a little girl. Both will give you moments of feeling rather spooped. Then she closes out the show with an overwhelming tale of a seance gone wrong!New Merch: In the spirit of keeping the spooky vibes rolling through the holidays, we've got an amazing new postcard set in the store this week. You'll get 16 deluxe thick postcards, 4 of each of 4 designs that all resemble the triangular shape of a Christmas tee in some creepy way. You've got Krampus, a XMAS tree cryptid, a festive yet spooky ghost, and a midwinter alien abduction.
