In this episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, explore the life of Anthony Glenn II, a Marine Corps veteran whose story is a testament to the power of resilience, transformation, and the fighting spirit of a Marine. Anthony's early life was marked by adversity. His youth was a struggle for attention and direction, leading him into frequent run-ins with the law. Yet, it was this very fight for survival and identity that forged his path to the Marine Corps. Anthony's transition from a troubled youth to a disciplined Marine is not just a story of personal achievement; it's a narrative that resonates with the core values of the military community. His journey into the Marine Corps, driven by a quest for structure and a refusal to return to a life that offered no future, is a powerful reflection of the transformative impact of military service. Despite initial reservations, including a stark warning from his father, a retired Army Colonel, Anthony's determination saw him through the rigorous challenges of boot camp at Parris Island, where he quickly learned the true meaning of discipline and camaraderie. His military career, however, was not without its trials. Anthony's early inclination towards confrontation followed him into service, leading to multiple altercations. Yet, it was the Marine Corps' structured environment and the mentorship he received that eventually helped him channel his aggression into a more constructive outlet, showcasing the Marine Corps' ability to mold individuals into their best selves. Beyond the uniform, Anthony's story is one of continuous growth and contribution. His post-military life, marked by a successful foray into real estate, demonstrates the seamless transition of military skills into civilian success. His work in real estate, particularly with veteran first-time home buyers, is a testament to his commitment to serving others, reflecting the enduring values of honor, courage, and commitment instilled in him by the Marine Corps. In 2017, Anthony founded the non-profit Veteran Homeowner's Club, to provide assistance and education programs to transitioning service members Anthony's willingness to help other military veterans navigate the complexities of civilian life, especially in securing homeownership, is a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration. His journey embodies the essence of the military spirit – fighting, overcoming adversity, and never ceasing to strive for excellence. Everywhere you look, people are asking the same question, “What the heck is happening in this crazy world we live in?” Depression and suicide are both on a rise, outrage has replaced reasoned discourse, victimhood is now a virtue, and cynicism in more the norm, instead of the exception. Enter in Marine Corps veteran Captain Jayson Downing who is on a mission to “Reawaken the warrior spirit and what it means to be a warrior in the modern west today.” Drawing on his own experiences in military training and the crucible of combat deployments, Jayson breaks down not only what exactly is going on in the modern West, more importantly, he addresses what we can do about it.   We are blessed to have Jayson on the IMPACT SHOW today. Specifically, here are some of the things we cover on this important topic that needs to be heard: A few of Jayson's top lessons that he learned as a Marine and how he uses them now in the civilian world. Why the transition from the military to the civilian world is often frightening and scary.   Why Jayson wrote his book (that just came out September 5th). Who this book is for and what's the mission behind the book. What is the Warrior Spirit…and where did it go? How to “Embrace life with strength & power” when you're getting your tail whopped.  You talk about “Pray for Peace…Prepare for War.” Talk more about that… What would be your recommendations be for young men & women today who not only want and need to survive, but want to lead and thrive in a changed world? Why I love the quote, “bleed more in training and die less in war.” How to be a modern day Warrior in the times we live in now. Jayson's big hope with this book and why everyone needs to read it and pass it on to a friend or family member.   I'm really proud of Jayson Downing. Not only is he a new author, he completed my “God-Sized Dreams” program a year ago and committed to writing and publishing this book. Additionally, he's about to become a first-time Dad in just a matter of days with his wife Dr. Carleigh Golightly.    If you would like to purchase his book, you can do so on Amazon or visit his website at www.TheWarriorJournal.com.  In this episode, I sat down to talk with retired 20-year Marine Corps veteran, MSgt. Derek Mensen. Derek's early life was steeped in the typical American pastimes of football and baseball, with a brief foray into wrestling. His family, while not having a history of military service, was supportive when Derek and his older brother decided to join the military. Derek's decision to join the Marine Corps was influenced by his older brother's less than satisfactory experience in the Army.   Derek's military career was diverse and challenging. He began his service at the Naval Academy, a unique duty station that provided him with a well-rounded background and valuable networking opportunities. He later served in the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force, which offered unique training opportunities, albeit in a more administrative role.   Around the nine-year mark in his career, Derek joined the Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC), a decision he made despite being considered "older" in the assessment / selection process. Derek ultimately had 6 combat deployments. His time in the Raider community was a significant part of his career, but as he approached the end of his service, he was thrust into a transition to the Team Chief role, which he used to his benefit to prepare for civilian life.   Derek's transition was aided by programs like the Honor Foundation, which helped him find his "golden thread" and his "why". He also pursued a Master of Business for Veterans at USC, which led him to meet his current business partners of the San Diego based Trident Coffee Roasters. Today, he is the Director of Operations.   This podcast episode is a must-listen for military veterans, especially those considering a transition to civilian life. Derek's story is a testament to the value of adaptability, foresight, and the willingness to seize opportunities as they come.   PODCAST - LISTEN, WATCH, AND SUBSCRIBE  https://linktr.ee/TransitionDrillPodcast   CONNECT WITH DEREK: https://www.instagram.com/tridentcoffee/ https://www.tridentcoffee.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/derekmensen/

Broken Promises ~ Compromised Mental Health Care, Counselor Burnout & Retaliation at VAOur Veterans are not numbers! Suzi is joined by Ted Blickwedel, Retired Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel, combat veteran and Licensed Clinical Social Worker, about compromised mental health care and counsel burnout in VA Vet Centers. Ted's journey from clinical social worker employed by the VA to today has been quite a road of discovery, hardship and disappointment in the VA system. Ted's expectation of quality care for his fellow men and women of service who need the support and mental health care from the VA was and is one top tier. Ted experienced first hand the lack of support as a clinician, lack of quality care for his patients and sadly the retaliation of speaking up about the injustice to both veterans needing help and those providing the help. Ted's BioRetired Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel and combat veteran who became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker after he retired from the military. He worked as a counselor at the VA VET Center in Warwick, RI from 2009 to 2018 where he provided mental health care for fellow veterans. In 2017, during his tenure at the VET Center, he began to ‘speak truth to power' in an effort to have VA VET Center Management revise their clinical productivity policies that were harmful to counselors and compromising quality care for veterans. His subsequent whistleblowing campaign came at great price, personally, professionally, financially and health wise. He is currently urging the United States Congress to pass legislation that has been introduced to the House and Senate Veterans Affairs Committees, as a result of a federal GAO investigation he helped instigate which substantiated his allegations.  This legislation will protect the quality of services to our veterans and their families, as well as safeguard the welfare of counselors who care for them at over 300 VET Centers nationwide. What do I need to know started going to first-time homebuyer courses and just really diving in deep and started realizing that a lot of the skill sets that I learned in the military could apply to real estate.” What made him realize that real estate is something he wants to do in life, and how he got into it?    5:22 - “VA loan is one of the two options that government options offer for 100% financing, the other one being the USDA, which is more rural. And so a lot of the military guys don't use strategy to buy their first home with a VA, which is smart. Comparison of a VA loan versus a conventional or an FHA loan.   11:47 - “Don't go to somebody you don't know and just say, hey, what can you do for me? It should be the other way around, like, what can I do for you?”  The importance of mentorship cannot be overstated. Investing in relationships is the most effective way to succeed.   15:56 -  “I have used seller financing, where the seller literally helped me get enough capital to close on that deal. So basically, what that looked like was the bank would lend 80% of the deal. I had 10% in, and the seller had 10% Hold back in.” He describes how he acquired his 230 units; what was it like to work all those hours?   21:08 -  “So just making that decision, it was when I decided,  I don't have enough time to really put into the real estate as much as and I acquire too much real estate, it needs my time, I might get a call about having to coordinate with a plumber, and I'm on a, I'm doing CPR,  like, two hours later, the basements flooded, or whatever made, like make might happen, you really can't deal with that. So I think that was a big defining factor.”  In the long run, what made him decide to become a real estate developer instead of serving his country? It was when he realized he was born to be a developer that he realized he was destined for it.   23:46 - “I think it's a combination of a few things like we already talked about. It is when you put your head down and you're working very, very hard. It seems like more people are going to help you, and they want to kind of guide you and show you how to do it. And sometimes, those come in the form of partners.” Here's how Josue transitioned from searching for a place to live to developing 230 units. In what ways was he able to expand his project?   30:05 “I prefer to do ground up, because one reason I prefer to do ground up, most people are afraid of it, because of the education and the risks, to really have a strong understanding of it, it just makes the markets that much smaller.” Josue describes his methods for searching for houses. Is there a particular way he looks at properties, and what are some of his strategies?   35:51 - “Like, Mike was talking about that sweet spot of, you know, 3040 units, that is good as an area where you're gonna get a better contractor, but you're not one of these big, big super big development companies that have to keep feeding the machine, right? They're super competitive, and they have more capital, and 40 units are not worth their capital raising.”  What makes a contract for a small project different from one for a large project?   44:44 - “ So I do have a joint venture partner that has more experience than I do that has been doing this a lot longer than I have, but we're all going to be raising capital, friends, and family. It's no different. It's really no different if you're trying to raise capital for a fund." Josue discusses where his fund comes from, and his exit strategy is.   51:36 - "So like, I calculate it out,  there's not just one metric you use to pencil these things out. It's your square foot, what's your bed and bathrooms going to get, what you buy, your land from, and what you have to give to the government to make them happy. There are a lot of moving metrics in this. But once you learn it, it's a skill for life. As long as you change the goalposts and move the goalposts, you're good.” Is there a way for you to know if the deal will work? Take the time to listen to the techniques discussed    53:38 - “Honestly, I think I would. I would do it all the same. I think it has gone great. It's not as gone perfect. But I mean, my company was, or I was, you know, 40 under 40 Boston Business Journal I got a citation from the governor's office.” Josue was asked if he had any advice for himself, and here's what he said. Key Takeaways:   “I believe the money is secondary if you're willing to just sit there and educate yourself. The money is literally endless when you have the right knowledge and the right mindset.” - Josue Velney “In some cases, I would argue it probably takes less effort to do a little bit bigger than the smaller stuff. But you get a disproportionate amount of return.” - Mike Webb “My why it's always changing. But the real focus is just community. If you look at my military career, what I have been able to do is serve my country. When I was a single firefighter, I was able to serve my community right. And now I still continue to serve my community by providing housing, you know, it's really, in what I found is when I take care of my community, my community takes care of me.” - Josue Velney       Resources Mentioned: Your First 100 Million:Your First 100 Million by Daniel S. This week's incredible guest – Mike Ettore – knows the way, and shows the way. Being the exceptional leader that he is, Mike became the youngest Drill Instructor in the Marine Corps at the age of 20. There's not a personal or professional challenge he can't overcome. Mike's effective combat leadership style resulted in numerous awards and decorations during his career, including the Bronze Star Medal for Valor (with Gold Star denoting 2nd award) and the Combat Action Ribbon (with two Gold Stars denoting 2nd and 3rd awards). These days, his purpose is to teach, coach, and help leaders develop - while he's alive and after he's gone. In this episode you will hear: I graduated from my first recruit platoon when I was 20. The Marine Corps trusted me and I tried very hard to live up to that trust. I spent my whole career trying to live up to the legacy of the Marines in World War I. If there's something the Marine Corps does well is it teaches and honors its history and traditions. We were considered by the battalion commander, to be the strongest lieutenant/staff sergeant team in the battalion. It's all about trust I was more excited about being an equally good leader in business as I was in the Marine Corps. Pre 9-11, I was dragging an AR-15 in a case through the airport. I was a C-level officer in charge of most of the back office of the non-sales function for a billion-dollar company, with no expertise in any of it. I wasn't really sure how to save a file. I teach and coach senior executives in the art & science of leadership. I'm 65 years old and have unlimited energy. I just love it. At 65 years old, with over 45 years of teaching leadership, I still learn something every week. I ask myself: ”How in the hell have I gone this long and never heard that?” I am vain enough that to think that 25, 50, 80 years from now - if somebody picks my book up,  the Iwo Jima lessons, the Grenada lessons, and the business lesson I've learned, just might help out my great, great-grandson or daughter, who never met me. [In life] I was mostly right, somewhat wrong, or completely full of shit [Conversation with son] just because it comes out of my mouth doesn't automatically mean that it's bullshit. As you get older, you're gonna find yourself becoming me. Dale Carnegie: “A man who dies rich dies disgraced.” I'm never gonna have Andrew Carnegie money, but I've got a laptop and a thumb drive. Everything that's up here [in my head] is gonna be out.
