(Bicentenario de la Batalla de Junín) «La historia consigna que... Simón Bolívar comenzó a inquietarse... al observar a lo lejos cómo la caballería realista arremetía contra las huestes patriotas la tarde del 6 de agosto de 1824. Imaginando que la victoria le podría ser esquiva, Bolívar dio media vuelta montado sobre su corcel, y enrumbó al encuentro de su infantería para anunciarle de un posible ataque realista. Sin embargo, casi una hora después, la historia cambiaría a favor de los destinos del Perú y América, ante la sorpresa del general caraqueño.» Así resume la «Batalla de Junín: 199 años después» el periodista Gabriel Valdivia, asesorado por el historiador y capitán del Ejército Peruano Jaime M. Taype Castillo, en su artículo publicado en El Peruano, Diario Oficial del Bicentenario, el 5 de agosto de 2023. «Los generales patriotas Phillip Braun, Mariano Necochea y William Miller hicieron frente al ataque enemigo, llevando la peor parte Necochea, que fue herido gravemente y hecho prisionero, mientras que Miller retrocedía combatiendo en desorden —relata el periodista peruano—. El capitán Taype asegura que la contienda fue encarnizada y sangrienta, pues se emplearon sólo lanzas y sables, razón por la que la historia la reconoce como la “batalla sin humo”.... Sin embargo, anota que en medio de la batalla... [fue] sorprendida la caballería virreinal y, sin ninguna fuerza de reserva a la vista, los jinetes [del general español José de] Canterac entraron en confusión y se retiraron atropelladamente.... Así se logró la victoria para los patriotas, luego de 45 minutos de intensa batalla.... »[El historiador Taype] señala que... [el comandante] Karl Sowersby, amigo [del general] Miller, [al tratar] de detener con su escuadrón las embestidas de la caballería realista, fue herido mortalmente por dos lanzas enemigas.... Presintiendo su muerte, el comandante alemán le dijo a su amigo: “Mi querido Miller, ambos tomamos las armas en esta causa casi el mismo día. Frecuentemente nos hemos batido juntos, y usted ve lo que probablemente sucederá. Escriba a mis ancianos y buenos padres, y dígales usted que muero por una causa gloriosa”. [Esas fueron] sus últimas palabras.... »“¡Soldados!
