The best part about living in Portland Oregon is being surrounded by amazing and awesome comic creators. The town is sick with them, and they are wonderful people. It is even better when you are reviewing a book written by a fellow Portlander. Matt Fraction is an award winning, media content creator. Having worked in all of the big companies, Matt has written some fantastic books that have put him on the map. The 2012 Hawkeye series, Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, Sex Criminals, Casanova, and of course Fantastic Four and FF. On top of all of that, Matt has also started to work in television. Starting as a creative consultant for the Hawkeye TV series and then as an executive producer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. A good guy who is creative, intelligent, and interesting. If you have not delved into the work that this creator has developed, I highly encourage you to take a chance and pick up his work. And, if you see him at a comic con, say hi. If you see him in the supermarket, leave the guy alone. He just wants some bagels. If ever we had a NSFW episode, this one is it... Leia and Josh are joined by special guest JR Cillian Green to talk about Sex Criminals! What if you could freeze time every time you orgasmed? This week we're bringing you an interview with one of the most prolific comic book writer/artists out right now, Chip Zdarsky! He's co-creator and artist for Sex Criminals, he's written for Batman, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Howard The Duck, Jughead, and created, wrote, and illustrated Public Domain as well as created and wrote Kaptara. But first, did Baby Geniuses LITERALLY crawl so Spy Kids could run? Are we a friend to Canadian comic creators? What is Chip's creative relationship with Matt Fraction like? IS Sex Criminals the "wife comic?" Will Sex Criminals ever be made into a TV show? Do artists tend to be liked more than writers due to creative consistency? Does Chip prefer to be an artist or writer? What is Chip's podcast Mangasplaining? How does Chip Zdarsky feel about creative rights within the comic industry? How does Chip feel about taking on Joker Year One? What is his take going to be on the most iconic comic book villain? What makes a good comic book editor in the industry? How does it feel to get a “Tompliment” from Tom Brevoort? Is Chip Zdarsky solely responsible for legalizing marijuana in New York City in Marvel Comics? Does he smoke weed? How does he feel about charging fans for signatures? What are some of Chip's most rewarding writer/editor relationships in the comic industry? How does that effect his story with Peter Parker & long time hater/Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson? What are positive signs of a good comics editor? Did Chip Zdarsky's Avengers comic predict what would happen in America post-pandemic back in 2019? Why does Chip think writing DC comics harder than writing Marvel comics? Is weed legal in the DC Universe? Tune in to hear Chip Zdarsky here on Comics and Chronic! On today's episode, I talk to Eisner Award-winning comics writer Matt Fraction. Originally from Chicago, Matt started out in comics writing for publishers like IDW in the early 2000s and broke into wider recognition with his 2006 series Casanova. This led to both more creator-owned work like Sex Criminals, Satellite Sam, and November as well as stints on Marvel books like Uncanny X-Men, Iron Man, Fantastic Four and a defining run on Hawkeye with David Aja. Matt also works in television, and most recently, he was the co-creator, writer, and executive producer of the brand-new Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which is out now! Trust your eyes, true believers, we built in a reprieve from the worst book ever written! What's more, it's one where we mix things up and discuss things Naomi and Joel actually like! We've done a lot of belly-aching about bad media so we put together some lists of good romantic media we've actually enjoyed in the last few years. Major spoilers ahead for a lot of these properties, but it's our contention that a lot of this media is enjoyable for the experience, not just the plot beats. We discuss the article Everyone is Beautiful and No One is Horny, the romance present in MCU films, the romance novel Hook, Line, and Sinker, Ewan McGregor's 2010 romcom Beginners, the George Clooney/Julia Roberts romcom Ticket to Paradise as well as their relationship in the Ocean's trilogy, the manga series Fullmetal Alchemist, the romcom You People, the Maniac tv series, the breakup romcom Someone Great, the tv series Bojack Horseman, the long-distance romcom Your Place or Mine, the sorta-like-a-romcom film Nacho Libre, and the comic series Sex Criminals. This is part one of a multi-part series; we have a lot of ground to cover in future installments. Naomi also reveals a shocking secret 2/3 of the way through: if you're following Guy-family drama closely, you don't want to miss this. This month we made a donation to a trans rights org supporting trans individuals fleeing states where their existence is being outlawed. On this episode, Chip Zdarsky pulls no punches. He's dishing out tough love left and right. But actually we're doing a deep dive on his newly release trade of Public Domain. Public Domain started on his substack but is now in print with Image comics. In Public Domain, Syd Dallas is responsible for pop culture's greatest hero: THE DOMAIN! But his sons Miles and David have a complicated relationship with both the creation and their creator. Can they convince their dad to fight for their family's legacy? Chip Zdarsky and Dan go through the first volume of the series to talk about it all. We spend some time talking about his substack and the community he built there. It's the first time on the show we've had the chance to discuss the platform move with one of the big names who switched over. We discuss if the community is built more on past fans or if it actually attracted new ones. Chip Zdarsky gets into the real meat of the book which heavily revolves around the comic book medium itself. The story itself deals with creator rights and royalties so we take some time to really get into that with discussions about creator owned work versus doing something for the big 2. We talk about the development of the series and it's characters. The topics of family and the dynamics of the creators of the series share with one another. We also get into how Chip Zdarsky did everything for this book and what it was like as a creator to do something solo. Chip talks about his collaborators of the past and talks a bit about the process of making Sex Criminals with Matt Fraction. We also get into his Spider-Man, Batman, and Daredevil work but we try to stay to discussing Public Domain which you should pick up now from Image!

To get the listeners in the mood for Valentine's Day, MMP is discussing (graphic) love stories for the new theme in February. The first book of the month, Sex Criminals #1 (2013) by Matt Fraction, explores the awkward experience people go through as they try to learn about sex. Due to an appalling lack of sex education, the main character and narrator of this comic, Suzie, finds it hard to discuss her concerns with anyone! This is an especially acute problem given Suzie's uncontrolled stoppage of time during orgasm. Blending humor and fun colors, this comic deftly addresses concerns surrounding moderns society's understanding of sex. Will Suzie ever be able to get the answers she is looking for? Does everyone else experience a pause in time when they reach the moment? Listen in and find out!
Was out of town last week so we put together a small episode with some of the non crimes we discussed with Mega Man. These are funny stories but we end up cutting them to stick more with stories involving crime when we sat down with Mega Man before. I tell a story about a bunch of racist dickbags on the side of a tiny mountain and we get into the spooky season. Hope you enjoy it and thanks for listening. Contact as at true.criminals.podcast on social media or email at truecriminalsjailpod@gmail.com We'd love to hear from you. Thanks to Justin Wells for the use of his song Age of Aggression for our outro. This episode was edited by Eric Bookout.

The artwork was done by Erica Henderson who has also done work with Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Real Science Adventures, and Assassin NationThis is going to be a brief overview, so there are going to be some things I miss or glaze over. But, if there's anything important I didn't highlight, let me know in the comment section below and we can talk about it! Comic Book Cliffnotes will air every Thursday.
