The insurrection at the Capitol Building on January 6th will be forever etched in the minds of Americans. On full display that day were White nationalists with their American and Trump 2020 flags, showing their undying love for a president who promotes hate, while also proudly carrying signs with quotes from scripture. Jer Swigart, Co-Founder of the Global Immersion Project is a peacemaker and pastor who confronts the racist past of the evangelical church and seeks to build church leaders who embrace a deeper understanding of Christianity--one that acknowledges the wrongs of the past while building anti-racist church leaders for the future. In this episode, Dr. Frank and Jer dive deep into the intersections of White nationalism and the church, discuss his work as a global peacemaker, and explore a conversation where church leaders lead a movement that is rooted in justice.

Join me as I sit down with author Brian Zhand and filmmakers David and Kathi Peters about their upcoming documentary, Postcards from Babylon. Postcards From Babylon is a documentary featuring author and pastor Brian Zahnd as he investigates possibly the most important question for the church in North America today, a church often characterized by Christian Nationalism: How does the church stay faithful to the beautiful way of Jesus while situated in one of the most divisive political climates in our nation’s history? The film, based on his popular book of the same name, begins with Brian some 350 miles into his 500-mile pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. He walks “the Camino” in spiritual pilgrimage as preparation for the mental mayhem of the 2020 US election cycle. It’s against the backdrop of the elections that Brian exposes how the church in America has succumbed to the seduction of empire and has entangled Christianity with the Red, White, and Blue. Prioritizing American Nationalism and partisan political agendas have “Trumped” the way of Jesus. The parallel between the modern-day United States of America and Biblical Babylon is one that is rarely drawn. Brian exposes the viewer to the culture war antics of evangelicals who rely on fear and scapegoating rather than the disarming qualities of humility, grace, and inclusion. Evangelical alliance with American politics is distorting the core message of the cross and damaging the witness of Christ both nationally and internationally. The film’s crew journeys to places around the United States of America leading them deep into the heart of the story. John Fea, a history professor at Messiah College, gives his perspective on the history of Christians in America and explains the deep divide in America as Christians take sides in partisan politics. Jon Huckins, director of The Global Immersion Project, takes a team of people to the San Diego/ Tijuana, Mexico border for a three-day immersion experience. Jon shows how immigration policies are creating harsh and dangerous situations for refugees seeking asylum. Brian Zahnd sits with Walter Brueggemann as Walter shares concerns for how the evangelical church has been tainted by its proximity to political power. Mark Galli (former editor of Christianity today) and Napp Nazworth engage in a panel discussion with students at Eastern University on the troubling issues related to journalism and the pursuit of truth for people of faith. Pete Wehner from the Ethics and Public Policy Center makes his way through the streets of Washington DC pondering the effect of the current state of politics on the emerging generation. Worship Pastor Daniel Deitrich sings his original song Hymn to the 81%, a heartfelt cry to his white evangelical friends to “come home” to the way of love and justice. Postcards from Babylon premieres online with an exclusive pre-release online ticketed showing streaming live January 21st at 7:00 p.m local time. Join me and my guest host, Dr. David Gushee, for a rollercoaster interview with Jer Swigart, co-founder of the Global Immersion Project. The three of us met in 2011 on a trip to Israel/Palestine hosted by Fuller Theological Seminary. This experience examined the conflict through the two narratives that define the region. By way of a "Spirit thing," as David remarked, we caught up with Jer as Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) was detaining two persons in unmarked buses in Bend, Oregon. Jer was with other clergy and people from Bend, standing in the way of the federal and local police. Their action lasted late into the night, but we caught up with Jer as the drama was unfolding. In this episode we talk about nonviolence, Evangelicalism and its roots in "slaveholder Christianity," and how white Christians must live out their/our faith.
Peacemaking is not just a good idea, it's the mission of God and the vocation of God's people. So what would the world look like if the Church took seriously, our call to be peacemakers? In pursuit of the answer, our guest Jon Huckins from The Global Immersion Project talks to our host Tommy Nixon about how he immerses himself into conflicts around the globe. In this episode of The Future Is Here podcast, learn how peacemaking is central to our faith, for it is an actual way of life and the very adventure that we've been saved into.Support the show (https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E12333&id=12)
On June 11th we hosted an online webinar with 23 churches from around the Seattle-Tacoma area to train people in the ways of non-violent resistance. As we seek to get further involved in the struggle for justice, we want to do this wisely. In this wisdom we want to listen to and learn from the long tradition of non-violent resistance. Non-violent resistance is an active resistance. It steps into the fray wherever the fundamental questions of justice and the welfare of our brothers and sisters are at stake. As we take the posture of love and the work of creating peace seriously, we must be prepared to endure whatever suffering is necessary to stand the force of hatred. We were joined by Taeler Morgan from Gather Tacoma, Jer Swigart from The Global Immersion Project, Carlos Curran a non-violent activist, and Aaron Monts from UNITED Church for this forum and panel discussion.

You can't read or listen to the news without hearing that our world is plagued with strife. From protests that become violent to civil unrest, it seems that people cannot engage in conversation without coming to blows. With so many conflicts around the world, there's even more finger pointing in the midst of it all. Scripture suggests that God wants us to be a peaceful presence in the world, but we can't even seem to do that among our own friends and families. How are we to be peaceful in the midst of injustice and such political strife? Join us this week as Bethany Anderson shares some helpful ways to create peace both locally and globally. You don't want to miss this last Across the Room conversation! BETHANY ANDERSON has spent the last 11 years living and learning in a small immigrant neighborhood with a community of believers and nonprofit organization called Solidarity. She serves as both the Advocacy Director for Solidarity and the founding Director of Camino Immigration Services, an initiative of Solidarity that provides quality legal counsel in immigration matters to the North Orange County community. Susan Ramirez and Jon Huckins are giving their all in some of *the* hardest work: lending voices and love to two communities who are suffering deeply. In our last episode of For the Love of Giving, we’re going to talk with Susan and Jon about the problems their communities face, and how we can give our time and privilege to help solve these complex problems. First up, Susan Ramirez is the CEO of National Angels, an org that walks alongside children and their caretakers in the foster care system. Today, we learn how one National Angels program is changing lives by providing love and belonging to kids who need it most. In the second half of the show, we talk with Jon Huckins. Jon is the co-founding director of the Global Immersion Project, a peacemaking training organization that equips people of faith to engage our divided world in restorative ways. Jen and Jon discuss how we can be good brothers and sisters to our neighbors who are suffering on the border, and how those with privilege can use it to fight on behalf of their marginalized neighbors.

Are the American Churches, Protestant, Catholic, Evangelical, and Mainline, ready to do the hard work that lies ahead? Today we will speak with Jer Swigart, one of the founders of the Global Immersion Project, on conflict, peacemaking, the movement of Christians who are learning that Christ had little interest in American standards of successful living, and the thrill and adventure of taking up one’s cross and following Jesus. Get ready: whichever side of the spectrum you find yourself, on this podcast, you’re in for a bumpy ride!

Paul didn't just sit around and pontificate lofty theological ideas from a chamber flowing with the finest wines and grains of abundance. Not even close. Paul, although an intellectual, was a practitioner. For him, theology is always practical. In Paul's short letter to Philemon, he challenges power structures of the day by contending for peace between a slave owner (Philemon) and a runaway slave (Onesimus). According to our friends at The Global Immersion Project, peacemaking in the way Jesus involves several practices: SEE, IMMERSE, and CONTEND—with the dream of eventual restoration. In this letter, Paul has clearly taken time to SEE the humanity of both of these men, he has IMMERSED in their stories, and now must contend for the life of Onesimus. This letter is peacemaking 101, folks! So good! In light of the current challenges we see in social media land, family relationships, and church dynamics in the aftermath of the Orlando mass shooting of 49+ LGBTQ persons, peacemaking couldn't be more relevant today. Listen along as we learn from Paul how to enter spaces of conflict. This episode is sponsored by Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary. They are excited to announce the launch of the new Master of Arts in Ministry, Leadership and Culture. This online program, designed for practicing pastors and ministry entrepreneurs, will help you understand and integrate sub-cultures, theology, and leadership into practice.
