In our first season of the podcast, we interviewed author Michael Zigarelli, who wrote  a book called The Messiah Method: The 7 Disciplines of the Winningest College Soccer Program in America. The book outlined the tremendous success of Messiah College soccer, where between 2000 and 2010 the mens and women's teams had won 11 national titles and been to 17 Final Fours between them. Ever since then, we have wanted to bring onto the podcast the architect of that dynasty Dave Brandt. Today we get to do that. In 24 seasons as a college head coach, including stints at Messiah, the US Naval Academy, Hope College and Bucknell, Dave Brandt has won over 360 games. In 12 years at Messiah, his teams compiled a 246-25-14 (.888) record, won six Division III national championships and made eight Final Four appearances. Brandt was a four-time National Coach of the Year honoree at Messiah, and five of his student-athletes earned National Player of the Year honors. He then moved on to the Naval Academy where he turned around a program and won the Patriot League as the first undefeated, untied conference champion in league history. After a short stint in professional soccer with the Pittsburg Riverhounds, he returned to college coaching at Hope College in MI where he again turned around a losing program and led them to an NCAA appearance and conference championship. This past Fall he led Bucknell to the Patriot League title and an NCAA tournament bid. In our chat today, Dave unpacks the core principles of all the winning programs he has built, how passion and intentionality drive his programs, the secrets to having standards not rules, the value of love in your coaching, and so much more. When was the last time you really thought about the importance of caring for yourself and others in the workplace? Too often, the answer to this question is a blank stare. Yet discussing a healthy work-life balance and finding tips for dealing with stress and burnout can be extremely helpful. And no, it doesn't have to be filled with pointless complaints. Instead, begin by acknowledging the obvious: that work can be hard, and it's easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day grind. Next, emphasize the importance of taking care of yourself both physically and mentally in order to be productive and successful. Finally, conclude the conversation by emphasizing the importance of a healthy work environment. You might be shocked at how much more you can accomplish after you've taken the time to evaluate all of this. Vice President of the Commonwealth Foundation Steve Bloom joins Dawn LIVE! COMMONWEALTH GROW PA BREAKDOWN...  Harrisburg, Pa., April 11, 2024 — Yesterday, Pennsylvania Sens. Scott Martin, Ryan Aument, David Argall, and Tracy Pennycuick and Reps. Jesse Topper and Rob Mercuri introduced “Grow PA,” a higher education reform plan designed to support post-secondary opportunities and career pathways in Pennsylvania. Starkly contrasting Gov. Josh Shapiro's “blueprint,” which still lacks detail and uses vague rhetoric on the issue, the lawmakers' proposal presents a positive step in reforming how taxpayers fund higher education. The plan centers around student-based financial aid, institutional accountability, and workforce development for Pennsylvania's in-demand industries. Commonwealth Foundation Senior Vice President Nathan Benefield issued the following statement in response: “The Commonwealth Foundation applauds these legislators for reframing how we fund higher education. In contrast to Governor Shapiro's empty platitudes, the Grow PA proposal offers concrete, student-focused reforms. “Grow PA funds students in all forms of higher education—from career and technical programs to community colleges to four-year universities—instead of offering a blank check to institutions. Rather than throwing money at buildings, bureaucrats, and blatant censorship, it focuses resources on the post-secondary studies that our commonwealth needs. “Grow PA's scholarship grants would make college degrees more affordable in high-demand fields, such as health care and agriculture. The proposal ties these funds to results and aligns programs with employer demands, helping students avoid debt and a degree that will never lead to a career. “Grow PA represents an important step forward. But we mustn't stop here. Lawmakers must move all state aid to student grants and improve K–12 educational outcomes—through educational choice programs like the Lifeline Scholarship Program—to ensure high school graduates are college-ready.” Stephen (Steve) Bloom is the Vice President at the Commonwealth Foundation.Steve grew up in New York, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Penn State University in Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, and his Juris Doctor from the Dickinson School of Law. He became shareholder in a law firm, later founded his own solo practice, and is now Of Counsel with Irwin & McKnight, P.C., in Carlisle, Pa., where he resides. He was an instructor and lecturer at Messiah College, teaching courses in economics, business law and personal finance, and has served as a faculty member for Pennsylvania Bar Institute continuing legal education programs. In 2010, Steve was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, where he served four two-year terms. In 2018, he entered a competitive race for the U.S. Congress, finishing a strong third among eight candidates in the Republican primary. In this episode, Jeff and Ben discuss: Ben's unique childhood filled with God, travel, work, and service.  Childhood expectations and earning your way. Blessings of starting from the beginning or the bottom of a business. Putting action to your thoughts and words.   Key Takeaways: We all have a purpose - we will not be able to make the best use of it if we are only living a lukewarm life. People see value when they take part in lifting themselves up, even if they get an assist, when they take part and contribute, they feel more motivation and responsibility. Especially in a family business, communication is the key. Be a first rate, best version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else.   "When you get to see how the rest of the world lives, and you get to experience it, there is no amount of talking about it that is going to have the same impact." —  Ben Rutt About Ben Rutt: With a professional journey spanning over 13 years in the real estate industry, Ben Rutt has crafted a distinguished career after acquiring his Marketing degree from Messiah College in 2010. He is celebrating 10 years with Keystone Custom Homes, where he has held a variety of positions including New Home Advisor, Supply Chain, Sales Management, and Director of Marketing. In his current role of Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Ben is fiercely focused on creating an exceptional customer experience for new home buyers driven by innovation, transparency, and data-driven decision-making. The motivation behind Ben's accomplished career is the desire for deep, meaningful work that extends beyond the bottom line. Keystone's intimate connections with HOPE International provide purpose beyond profit, with 89% of the company owned by the National Christian Foundation. Outside of the office, Ben takes pride in raising his four children with his wife Rebecca. He also enjoys traveling, is a self-proclaimed history buff, and has a competitive streak on the tennis court. Connect with Ben Rutt:Website: https://www.hopeinternational.org/Website: https://www.keystonecustomhome.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-rutt  Connect with Jeff Thomas: Website: https://www.arkosglobal.com/Book: https://www.arkosglobal.com/trading-upEmail: jeff.thomas@arkosglobal.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/ArkosGlobalAdv Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/arkosglobal/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/arkosglobaladvisorsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/arkosglobaladvisors/

We all admire at the courage, commitment, and success of the US Navy SEAL Teams. These warriors are often thought of as supermen, but in reality, they are just highly trained professionals who work very effectively as a team--even in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments. This does not happen by accident. It is part of their training and their culture--and something other teams can learn from and aspire to become. Our guest on today's episode has studied what gives the SEAL teams the ability to adapt as a collective unit in the most dynamic circumstances, and shares his findings on the factors that affect the success of these particular action teams. Using data gathered from official documents and interviews with retired Navy SEALs, he has greatly expanded the understanding of dynamic instability as it relates to team adaption in uncertain environments. He shares these lessons learned in practical ways that will be useful to leaders and teams in a variety of industries and settings. Today's Guest Today's guest is Dr. David Livingston. David is the Managing Partner of the McChrystal Academy, part of the McChrystal Group in Alexandria, Virginia. The McChrystal Group was founded by retired 4-star Army General Stanley McChrystal, most famous for his command of the Joint Special Operations Command during the Global War on Terror. Striving to live for Jesus is a gift and a challenge wrapped in one - do you sometimes feel like you're a hamster on a wheel, spinning around going nowhere fast?   This is how Anity Keagy, mom, grandmom and creator of JoyShop Ministries, felt until she heard the Lord speak Matthew 6:33 over her. "SEEK FIRST His Kingdom, and everything else you need will be given to you." As she started to walk this verse out, she surrendered her whole self to Jesus - and discovered this verse to be the answer to abundant life!    Ready to hear Anita & Kori discuss an amazing testimony that parallels God's love letters to us? Let's Go...   ANITA KEAGY founded JoyShop Ministries in 2006 with one simple mission: to inspire people to prioritize spending time with God every day through Bible reading and prayer. Since then, she has traveled nationwide and internationally, sharing her message of seeking God first each day as the key to abundant life and joy.    Anita candidly shares about her teenage pregnancy as a preacher's daughter and the difficult choice to place her daughter for adoption. Although she never had the privilege to see or hold her child, Anita never stopped yearning to know her daughter, even as she married and had four more children. Through a file of letters and the help of her adoption agency, Anita finally met her first-born 21 years later. God used Anita's own desire to know her child to impress upon her how much He wants to know His children-us! With that knowledge, JoyShop Ministries was born, which is now thriving and impacting lives every day!   Anita is the author of The File: A Mother and Child's Life-Changing Reunion. Her motivational six session DVD series, Seeking God First found on RightNow Media, PureFlix, Crossflix, and Vision Video, has encouraged and challenged those who long for a deeper relationship with God. Her DVD, Letters to an Unknown Daughter is her personal testimony of motherhood, hope, and healing. Her book and DVD series, along with additional supportive materials, can be purchased on her website.    Anita lives in Washington Boro, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Paul. She is the mother of 5 adult children and 14 grandchildren. Coach Chelsea speaks with Jeri Porter on her faith and love for God and Servant Leadership. Porter was named to the position on May 11, 2015, and made an immediate impact. Inheriting a squad that lost 20 games the year before and was picked to finish next to last according to the pre-season Peach Belt Conference coaches' poll, she directed the Patriots to a 24-9 record, a No.23 national rankings, and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. That squad produced one All-Conference performer and one PBC All-Academic Team selection. During her second year, FMU went 18-12 and placed second in the Peach Belt Conference's East Division. The Patriots advanced to the PBC Tournament semifinals, one player earned All-Conference honors, and one garnered Academic All-Conference recognition. In 2017-18, the Patriots posted a 16-12 mark and saw two players earn All-Conference honors and one pick up All-Region and All-America accolades. In 2018-19, FMU went 12-15 with one player gaining All-Conference and All-Region honors, and during the 2019-20 season the Patriots were 14-13 and featured a pair of All-PBC performers. Altogether, Porter has 21 years experience as a collegiate head coach – 11 at the NCAA Division I level and 10 at the Division II level – and has recorded a 294-300 career mark. She came to Florence after spending the 2014-15 season at Georgia State University as an assistant on the Panthers' staff. Porter's first head coaching position was at Division II University of North Alabama, where she posted three winning marks in four seasons, including a 21-7 record in 1999-2000. That squad captured the Gulf South Conference East Division title, while Porter garnered conference Coach of the Year recognition. She was named the head coach at Radford in 2002 and led the Highlanders to 93 wins in six seasons, including a pair of 20-win campaigns and two second-place finishes in the Big South Conference. Her 2007-08 squad was 23-12 and earned a WNIT invitation. In 2008, she accepted the head coaching position at George Mason University, where she remained until 2013. Porter increased the Patriots' win total over her first four seasons (from four to 15 wins). During her time in Fairfax, she also created and directed the Jeri Porter Girls' Basketball Camps. Her final two squads posted a cumulative team grade point average of 3.09. Porter is a 1991 graduate of Liberty University, where she earned a B.S. degree in psychology. She garnered first-team All-Big South Conference honors as a senior and was twice named her squad's most valuable player. She was inducted into the university's Lady Flames Hall of Fame in 1998. She began her coaching career at her alma mater serving as an assistant coach for six seasons, during which time the Lady Flames won two conference tournament championships and advanced to the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Tournaments. She married Michael Porter of Manassas, Va., in 1997 and the couple has a son (EJ, age 20) and a daughter (Jada, 11). Her son plays basketball at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pa. Porter is the 13th head coach in the storied history of the Francis Marion program. The Francis Marion program has an all-time record of 897-499 in 48 seasons and ranks 12th among all NCAA Division II institutions in total wins. The Patriots have captured two national championships, the 1982 AIAW Division II title and the 1986 NAIA title, and also advanced to the 1998 NCAA Division II Final Four. The program made five straight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances between 1997 and 2001, and four consecutive appearances between 2008 and 2011. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chefranjohn/support

Have you heard of a little theological term, theosis? This is an important term, beloved and taught most explicitly in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, but is at the heart of Christian hope. And, many Christians believe, at the heart of Christian experience. It's a term that grabbed my attention many years ago because to my little ol' Pentecostal heart, it captured the dynamism of life in Christ I'd been told I should pursue growing up and homed it within the life of the Church and most ancient root systems of the Christian faith. If you've not heard this word, I'll leave you with that teaser for now. Many of us have had these moments of finding the vocabulary of the heart, or of some experience or desire we couldn't quite name, suddenly appear before us in the writings of the saints. Then when I started reading C.S. Lewis, I found a translator and a teacher of many of these concepts, and an imagination that helped me put them on a theological map -- maps that often looked like Narnia or the planet Venus. Though Lewis doesn't use the word "theosis" in his writings, I found my understanding of this core Christian hope expand under his teaching. And I wondered how much interest in or exposure to Eastern Christianity Lewis had in his life. Who were his teachers? What do we learn through what he was learning about love's redeeming work? So, on to theosis in the life, works, and relationships of CS Lewis. What do we find there? I had a couple of conversation partners and guides who were up to the task, and we unearthed a few delightful surprises together. Drs. Crystal and David Downing are co-directors of the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College, Illinois, which promotes the work of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, Dorothy Sayers, Charles Williams, and other key British Christian authors, and helps develop new writers and scholars of faith and imagination. Crystal formerly served as Distinguished Professor of English and Film Studies at Messiah College, and is the author of several books on Dorothy Sayers, postmodernism, and film. Her most recent book, Subversive: Christ, Culture, and the Shocking Dorothy L Sayers, won a starred review by Publisher's Weekly and was Publisher's Weekly's pick of the week. David Downing has written several scholarly books on C.S. Lewis and provided a critical introduction and explanatory notes to the new edition of C.S. Lewis's The Pilgrim's Regress. He also serves as a consulting reader of Lewis and editorial consultant for a number of academic publishers. Now enter the wardrobe, hop on the bus, and snuggle into your space capsule. Welcome to episode sixty-three of New Creation Conversations. I'm delighted to be joined in today's conversation by Erica Young Reitz. Erica is an alum of Messiah College and has an MA in Higher Education from Geneva College. In recent years, Erica has been serving as the director of Senior EXIT, a one-year experience at Penn State University that prepares graduating college seniors for the transition into the next phase of life. She is the author of After College: Navigating Transitions, Relationships and Faith (published by InterVarsity Press).  Last week I talked to Michael Lindsay about “Hinge Moments,” and since we are in the middle of graduation season and many of you are in the midst of transitions or have young people in your life that you are helping to navigate their way into adulthood, I thought it would be good to have a couple of conversations with people who have thought and written extensively about these moments of significant life transitions. Erica's book is an excellent resource for parents, pastors, or campus leaders. I have four children in their twenties who are going through their own important life-trajectory decisions. I ordered a stack of Erica's books to give to them and to the several graduates in my life. No matter where you are in life, I think there is much to glean from this conversation.

Devin's Story: Shame, Contraception, and Deconstructing Purity Culture

Sexvangelicals

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 28, 2022 65:57

Jeremiah and Julia both went to Christian Colleges, which promoted sexual purity. These ideas are pushed onto people when they are young, reinforcing throughout their lives that sex is bad, to put it in the simplest terms. Women are the most punished victims because though purity culture deeply hurts and traumatizes men, women are acting within the confines of Christianity and the patriarchy (and those two tend to go hand in hand).  Personally, I (Nicole) find the purity culture extends past the Church, displaying the profound impact that Christian ideology around sex and sexuality has had on our world as a whole. So, when hearing how intensely damaging and dangerous the messaging around sex is in Christian contexts it hard not to think about my own experiences with the virginity construct and shame around the oh-so-scary pill (birth control). Purity culture is rooted in guilt, built to promote silence and shame at every corner.  The ideology is ingrained: if you have sex before marriage you will go to hell, and possibly even worse if someone finds out you will be shamed indefinitely. It takes a certain kind of bravery to break out of the confines of this ideology, and Devin Ritenhower has this bravery. Devin Ritenour graduated from Messiah University (formerly Messiah College) with a degree in biblical and religious studies. After leaving the Church she went on to pursue a career in the mental health field and has been working in a residential rehabilitation program for people with significant mental health diagnoses and substance abuse for the last four years. She's currently a Masters's student at a southern New Hampshire University studying to be a psychotherapist and is expected to graduate this spring. You can find her on Instagram @earthtodevin to enjoy some wonderfully lovely cat photos. Devin talks with Jeremiah and Julia about: The expectations of sex and sexuality in a Christian community (5:00): Devin talks about the culture and expectations of and around sex in her religious background: “Not only is sex bad, but you shouldn't want sex, you shouldn't be thinking about sex, you shouldn't be promoting sex, and when I say promoting sex I mean wearing anything that had lace on it.” She talks about the different set of expectations around women, and shares an anecdote about having to read a book on how not to tempt her “brothers [in Christ]”, or how she puts it “one big cringey happy family.” Dating in a Christian context (12:30): “The Church set me up for failure in a lot of ways,” Devin says when asked about how it was like to date in this culture. With the already unrealistic and unhealthy language and ideas around sex, paired with a culture of guilt and shame, dating was “rough”, or better described: “Where if you do it you don't talk about, but you better not do it” sums up the ideology firmly. Contraception and shame (18:00): Julia says “I'm not thinking, ‘Dear Lord, if I got pregnant, my entire world would shame me and condemn to hell,” after Devin discusses creative contraceptive methods she used as a teenager when the act of buying contraceptives was maybe even more shameful than the sex itself. So, instead of using safe and available contraception, tinfoil and other things had to substitute because the sentiment Julia shared was the thought process for young Christians, including Devin, who had a fear more steeped in community guilt and buying contraceptives, instead of a healthy dialogue around contraceptive needs. Devin says, “By the time I needed it [contraceptives], I was too ashamed and broken to ask for it.” How Biblical studies lead to questioning Christianity (29:00): Devin studied religion and the Bible, and the actual studying and unpacking the Bible led her to question her faith, “But then it became okay if I'm not taking this part of the Bible seriously, why am I taking this part as seriously?” And she describes her moral dilemmas when she learned the cultural context of the biblical passages and ideas she was learning about, and how those two things did not match up. Deconstructing purity culture in a romantic relationship (40:00): Devin talks about the damage purity culture did to her within the context of her relationship with her now-husband, and Julia notes that though purity culture is damaging for both men and women, “I think the more acute anxiety and panic tend to hit women due to the mass amounts of oppression and repression.” She then goes on to say, “Religion is obviously a huge part of people's lives and identities, so it's typical when you marry someone you anticipate being on the same page. And John and I were not on the same page from the get-go.” Devin spends time talking about how John's questioning and her own questioning led her to leave Christianity. And later says “I got lucky. This should have broken us” (50:20) (The “this” being the toxic culture of sexual purity that hurt her and the effects on Devin and her husband's relationship.) We hope that you're encouraged by Devin's story, and we'd love to hear from you as well! Follow us on IG at @sexvangelicals! Let's heal together!

This special bonus episode is a chat with Dr John Fea, professor of American history at Messiah College in Pennsylvania--and although he's an evangelical, he is a prominent voice who has been speaking out for years about what he terms the "court evangelicals" surrounding Donald Trump.  Dr Fea is also the author of multiple books and articles, but I wanted to focus on two works: first, his 2011 book Was America Founded as a Christian Nation: A Historical Perspective, and his more recent work, Believe Me: The Evangelical Road to Donald Trump (2018). Dr Fea and I dissect not only the myths of Christian nationalism, but discuss the role that dominion theology and power politics have shaped the Christian Right and evangelical support for Donald Trump.
