JER SWIGART, Global Immersion Project / Sixth Sunday of Easter / Acts 16:9-15
In this episode of the Touring the Holy Land Series, Jen has a conversation with Jer Swigart on immersive peacebuilding in the context of Israel-Palestine. In this conversation, Jer discusses the complexities of Christian tourism in Israel and Palestine, highlighting its role as a propaganda tool that often neglects the realities of the local communities. He emphasizes the importance of building deep, meaningful relationships with both Israeli and Palestinian kin to foster genuine peacemaking efforts, and how Global Immersion seeks to do this through immersion trips for Christian leaders. Jer shares personal experiences and insights on navigating the challenges of peacemaking, especially in light of recent conflicts. He advocates for local immersion and community engagement as vital components of social transformation, encouraging listeners to connect with marginalized communities in their own cities. Here at the Circle we are actively seeking to engage in dialogue with Christian leaders because we believe there is much overlap between the values of A Course in Miracles students and those who identify as reconstructing Christians. Namely, we both want to bring forth a world that sides with love in accordance with the teachings of Jesus. This is why we are thrilled to be speaking with Jer Swigart, cofounder of Global Immersion, this week. Global Immersion is a nonprofit that focuses on equipping leaders - particularly those in the Christian church - to become peacemakers in the world. In this podcast, Jer and Emily Perry talk about making peacemaking a spiritual practice, applying peacemaking principles to real-world settings, dismantling harmful ideologies, healing Christian nationalism, and finding Jesus in the middle of the storm. ___________________________ Since 1993, our purpose has been to help with both the theory and practical application of A Course in Miracles. Co-Founder and Director of Global Immersion Jer Swigart joins us this week to talk about conflict and peacemaking in the church. He reflects on what it means to be one body, how our understanding of God shapes the way we deal with conflict and discomfort in the church, and how we can practically become more conflict competent as followers of Jesus. In the wake of yet another mass shooting, the conversations are once again saturated with tired arguments leading us nowhere. We're done waiting for change to begin with Capitol Hill. We're convinced that measurable change will start with communities of Jesus-followers who transform their guns into garden tools. On Monday, April 3rd we had a live conversation with Shane Claiborne (Red Letter Christians), Mike Martin (RAWtools), Kelly Knox, and Pastor Amy Kasari (Antioch Church, Bend), hosted by Jer Swigart (Global Immersion). Shane helped us understand our national fixation on guns, its incongruence with Jesus, and what it's costing us. Mike will invited us—as individuals and congregations—to take tangible actions that will lead to change. Kelly shared his story of choosing to decommission his AR15. And Amy invited us into her church's journey of becoming a gun decommissioning site in Central Oregon. We concluded the live session with a Q&A time and outlined practical next steps both individuals and congregations can take. Follow Up Webinar - April 11, 9am pacific/12 pm central Join Mike Martin as he lays out the specific and very tangible steps toward becoming a gun decommissioning site. Pastor Amy Kasari will offer more specifics and reflections on the formational journey she and her team have guided their congregation through in preparation for this work. Rev. Deanna Hollas will orient us and offer an invitation to a five-week Guns to Garden Tools Action Circle. Q&A will be integrated throughout the entire 1-hour conversation. The insurrection at the Capitol Building on January 6th will be forever etched in the minds of Americans. On full display that day were White nationalists with their American and Trump 2020 flags, showing their undying love for a president who promotes hate, while also proudly carrying signs with quotes from scripture. Jer Swigart, Co-Founder of the Global Immersion Project is a peacemaker and pastor who confronts the racist past of the evangelical church and seeks to build church leaders who embrace a deeper understanding of Christianity--one that acknowledges the wrongs of the past while building anti-racist church leaders for the future. In this episode, Dr. Frank and Jer dive deep into the intersections of White nationalism and the church, discuss his work as a global peacemaker, and explore a conversation where church leaders lead a movement that is rooted in justice.
As we wrap up season one of the new Everyday Peacemaking podcast, we took time to reflect on 2020, division in the USA, the pandemic, and the impact we can have as everyday peacemakers moving into the new year globalimmerse.org

Join me and my guest host, Dr. David Gushee, for a rollercoaster interview with Jer Swigart, co-founder of the Global Immersion Project. The three of us met in 2011 on a trip to Israel/Palestine hosted by Fuller Theological Seminary. This experience examined the conflict through the two narratives that define the region. By way of a "Spirit thing," as David remarked, we caught up with Jer as Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) was detaining two persons in unmarked buses in Bend, Oregon. Jer was with other clergy and people from Bend, standing in the way of the federal and local police. Their action lasted late into the night, but we caught up with Jer as the drama was unfolding. In this episode we talk about nonviolence, Evangelicalism and its roots in "slaveholder Christianity," and how white Christians must live out their/our faith.
The political climate is tense right now. Jer Swigart joins us from Oregon to talk with us about what his current context has revealed about white supremacy and white liberalism. He describes this context, what it looks like, and how it keeps us divided. We discuss what the root of this may be, and how we can overcome it build bridges. No matter where you stand on the issues we are currently facing you I encourage you to tune in for a challenging conversation! On June 11th we hosted an online webinar with 23 churches from around the Seattle-Tacoma area to train people in the ways of non-violent resistance. As we seek to get further involved in the struggle for justice, we want to do this wisely. In this wisdom we want to listen to and learn from the long tradition of non-violent resistance. Non-violent resistance is an active resistance. It steps into the fray wherever the fundamental questions of justice and the welfare of our brothers and sisters are at stake. As we take the posture of love and the work of creating peace seriously, we must be prepared to endure whatever suffering is necessary to stand the force of hatred. We were joined by Taeler Morgan from Gather Tacoma, Jer Swigart from The Global Immersion Project, Carlos Curran a non-violent activist, and Aaron Monts from UNITED Church for this forum and panel discussion.

Episode 19 is Here! Four pastors discussing and debating faith, relationships, pop culture, politics, ministry, food, entertainment, theology and much more! Welcome to Post Christian Pastors! This episode was recorded just a day after the tragic shooting in Las Vegas that left 58 people dead and over 500 people injured, some of those barely clinging to life. The guys spend the first part of the podcast talking about the shooting and looking for answers to the senseless violence in Vegas. They then turn their attention to our divided culture which is filled with OUTRAGE and DIVISION. From political divisions, racial divisions, to battles over players kneeling during the national anthem and more, all mixed together has left many feeling hopeless about our future as a people. Unity and dialogue in our differences seems impossible. How can we build bridges to each other and hear each other? Those are just some of the questions pursued during our discussion. It is an impactful discussion and will be useful to you as you pursue PEACE in your context. Joining the guys for the discussion is guest Jon Huckins Jon is a pastor, author, and leadership coach. He is the Co-Founding Director of The Global Immersion Project, a peacemaking training organization that is activating the North American Church as an instrument of peace. He is also on staff with Thresholds as a missional church leadership coach and co-leads a neighborhood faith community. Jon spends his life coaching organizations and people on how to be peace makers here at home and internationally. Our focus with Jon is unpacking his latest book Mending The Divides: Creative Love in a Conflicted World with Jer Swigart. It is a great read which we highly recommend during these divisive days. He has a Master’s degree from Fuller Theological Seminary and writes for numerous publications including, TheOOZE, Red Letter Christians, Sojourners, RELEVANT and Burnside Writer’s Collective. He has written a few books Teaching Through the Art of Storytelling, Thin Places: Six Postures for Creating and Practicing Missional Community. He lives in San Diego with his wife Jan and four kids.

Jer Swigart is a social innovator, an organizer, a professor, and the cofounding director of The Global Immersion Project, a peacemaking training organization that forms, equips, and mobilizes individuals and communities to enter any kind of conflict to heal rather than to win. He was the founder and lead pastor of The Open Door Community, a courageous collective of people pursuing God’s dream for the San Francisco Bay area, and he is a contributing author to a number of books that focus on theology, leadership, justice, and reconciliation. A modern-day peacemaker, Jer has found himself contending for restoration in beautifully bizarre corners of our global village. Whether in the tribes of northern Pakistan, the slums of India, the red-light districts of Southeast Asia, the violence of Israel and Palestine, or the racial injustice of his own neighborhood, Jer loves people in a way that disarms violence and dismantles divides. His engagement within national and international conflicts has formed him into a guide for the church as she seeks to leverage her influence as an instrument of peace in our world. A sought-after speaker, Jer frequently teaches in the areas of peacemaking and conflict transformation, faith and culture, neighbor and enemy love, spiritual formation, culture creating, and innovative leadership. He completed his undergrad at The University of Northwestern-St. Paul and has an MDiv from Fuller Theological Seminary, where he received the prestigious David Allen Hubbard Award. He currently resides with his family in Bend, Oregon. Linkg to Mending the Divides - https://www.amazon.com/Mending-Divides-Creative-Conflicted-World/dp/0830844848

Message from February 26th, 2017 by Jer Swigart, co-founder of The Global Immersion Project (TGIP) and dear friend of Genesis.
With a society that is becoming more and more divided, with a contentious political race ahead, and with global conflict on the rise, the world is in need for a church that carries out its role as a maker of justice and peace. Are the American Churches, Protestant, Catholic, Evangelical, and Mainline, ready to do the hard work that lies ahead? Today we will speak with Jer Swigart, one of the founders of the Global Immersion Project, on conflict, peacemaking, the movement of Christians who are learning that Christ had little interest in American standards of successful living, and the thrill and adventure of taking up one’s cross and following Jesus. Get ready: whichever side of the spectrum you find yourself, on this podcast, you’re in for a bumpy ride!
