Hope's Reason: A Podcast of Discipleship

Bruxy Cavey is one of the most well known pastors in Canada. Unfortunately, he known for both his success and failure. I have no desire to attack Bruxy, nor am I his judge. But Bruxy Cavey has made a quiet comeback at https://www.theghostof1820.com. My purpose for this video is to reflect as a pastor on when and how to return to ministry after a fall aside from what we think of Bruxy's path. All pastors should be thinking about these issues. The Big Story
Inside the abuse scandal at an Ontario megachurch

The Meeting House was meant to be a new kind of church; one that would appeal to those who felt alienated by mainstream Christianity. The church's charismatic leader, Bruxy Cavey, with his impassioned sermons, and sometimes controversial interpretations of scripture, drew parishioners to their Oakville, Ontario headquarters from across the Greater Toronto Area. At its peak, Meeting House membership numbered 5000, and the future looked bright for the so-called ‘megachurch'.Then, in 2021, allegations of sexual misconduct were made against Cavey, and in the aftermath of that scandal, other incidents involving Meeting House staff began to surface, pointing to a more systemic issue within the church. Membership has since dwindled, and criminal proceedings against Cavey are ongoing. So what exactly happened at the Meeting House? What can this scandal tell us about the phenomenon of Church sexual abuse more broadly? And what needs to change to make sure that places of worship are also a place of safety for all?GUEST: Rachel Browne, investigative journalist and documentary producer who wrote about The Meeting House in The Walrus

After allegations against Bruxy Cavey, the investigation has been completed. But was this "just an affair"? Hi friends, Hannah joins me (Will) again for this week's podcast! And we cover a lot of ground in this chat.In this episode we speak a fair bit about recent events within the evangelical church that you may or may not be familiar with. We do our best to give context, but if we accidentally assumed some ‘insider knowledge' anywhere I apologise for that. There are links below to a number of the individuals and situations we make reference to if you want to get more familiarised. Whilst we were reflecting on some specific recent events, we were also just grappling with what these are symptomatic of. This isn't really intended to be a ‘hot take', it's really just our own attempt to process and make sense of some of the patterns and trends we see, that ought to give us all pause for thought. As we are discussing allegations of clergy abuse and imbalanced power dynamics in religious settings, you may want to proceed with caution if these have been lived realities of yours. As always, take care while listening, and reach out to someone for support if you need it. In this episode we make reference to the following people, situations and resources: Bruxy Cavey's sexual misconduct and The Meeting HouseDanielle Strickland and Jarrod McKenna's response (cited in the article above)Beth Moore and this series of tweetsBrian Houston's resignation from HillsongDan Koch, You Have Permission PodcastJesus and John Wayne, Kristin Kobe Du Mez

This is the preach I never got to give. The exposing, painful truth of Bruxy Cavey's sexually abusive history has been an incredibly difficult time for my own community at The Meeting House, the church with whom I served on the teaching team. It has also coincided with many other truths being revealed around Clergy Sexual Abuse, harassment and misconduct from other places as well - Brian Houston, and Christianity Today to name two others exposed just these last few days. It appears we are in a season where God is rooting out some deeply embedded sin. The temptation is to think this is a fight against flesh and blood. But it's much bigger than that. So, what do we do? How do we fight back? Who is our actual enemy here? That's what I hope to communicate in this podcast. Here are some tools and clarity around how we fight back. Ephesians 6:10-20Hope it helps. Wilderness Wanderings

Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David? David himself declares in the Book of Psalms: “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”' David calls him ‘Lord.' How then can he be his son?” (Luke 20:41-44)   Jesus has been peppered with questions ever since arriving in Jerusalem's temple.  But after silencing all his opponents, Jesus takes on the role of questioner himself.  Everyone knew that the Messiah would be a Son of the David, thee Son, in fact.  The terms were synonymous.  And when people referred to Jesus as the Son of David, he never took any offence.  Luke was, in fact, at pains in the first couple chapters of his gospel account to tell us that Jesus was the Son of David.  He was fit to be the Messiah.  His credentials checked out. But now Jesus throws a wrench into the whole works.  How can the Messiah be both David's Son and David's Lord at the very same time?  No answer is given.  No one responds.  Jesus doesn't explain.  The narrative just moves on. People's expectations of the Messiah were different than the Messiah that Jesus was.  They were looking for a new earthly King to fight their earthly battles for them, and reclaim their earthly land from Rome.  All their hopes lay within human reach.  But would David have need to refer to one of his merely human descendants as Lord? Only God can save in the ways that we need saving.  Which are earthly ills, yes.  We need saving from the earthly, unjust, violent oppression of war, like what we see playing out in Ukraine under Putin's aggression.  We need saving from earthly abuse and its impacts, as our sisters and brothers in the Meeting House feel acutely right now following Bruxy Cavey's dismissal this week for sexual abuse.  We need saving from disease, as we know from two full years to the day—today—of suffering under a pandemic.  But we also need saving from a spiritual ill that shoots through and undergirds it all: sin. Only the Son of God himself can do both.  Only if Jesus is Lord and Christ can he save us from everything that destroys and disfigures life.  Only if he is both human and divine—imminent and transcendent, near enough, but also big enough—can he save us from our sins and all their effects.  Thanks be to God: Jesus is not merely the Son of David, but also the Son of God.  He is Lord and Christ.  And even today: he reaches down to save, heal, and redeem us from all our violence, abuses, disease, and pain as only our Lord God can do.  But as our human King, he is also close enough to us to comfort us in our sorrow and enfold us into his care.  He is our Lord King, and in all this, we belong to him.

Come dipingeresti il volto di Dio? Rassicurante o inquietante? Amorevole o ostile? Ti mette paura?

Bruxy Cavey is a Canadian pastor working with The Meeting House, a church with roots in the Anabaptist movement. He has written a book about having a relationship with Jesus called The End of Religion. You can find him on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and bruxy.com.      Satan has always been after Christians and works to seduce them with power, he convinces people they can make their country more Christian through politics. He pushes us to seek religion rather than relationships. Bruxy is here today to teach about a different way to change the world-- the way the Anabaptists follow; the way of love and non-violence; the way of Jesus. Anabaptists believe politics has nothing to do with Jesus. We should ignore what the government is doing and focus on our Kingdom mission, which is to love people and introduce them to Love Himself. I hope this episode encourages you today and inspires all of us to be “part of the solution…partnering with God to bring about something good,” as Bruxy puts it.

Bruxy and Jonny talk about faith traditions, religious people, spiritual family, creative engagement in loving our enemies, and questioning structures and systems that get in the way of following Jesus. And way way more! About "The End of Religion" - "Cavey contends that the Jesus described in the Bible never intended to found a new religion; instead he hoped to break down the very idea of religion as a way to God. With a fresh perspective on biblical stories, Cavey paints a picture of the world God originally intended and still desires: a world without religion." We're excited for you to watch this week's show. Addison Aspilla, one of our Takeover Winners, hosts this SPICY show about 'WHERE ARE ALL THE CHRISTIAN MEN?" Yep! You heard that right. We go there. And this show is not just for single women looking to get married, but it's also for women married to men who are just not 'into' the whole God thing, and for US the big 'C' church .. on why and how we should support our single people because we're not doing a great job at it currently. And, if we did support them well and include them in our lives (being a part of our communities, inviting them to dinners and lunches) maybe, just maybe, single people wouldn't feel so alone, isolated and forgotten. So as part of our exploration and discussion today on Where are all the Christian Men and What do we do about it; we have a PANEL OF MEN who will be sharing their thoughts with us: Bruxy Cavey, Lead Pastor of The Meeting House, Rev. Chris, The 'Viral Vicar' on YouTube and Dr. Narry Santos, Associate Professor at Tyndale Seminary. An Important conversation for ALL OF US – single or married – and how we can support and love one another.

We are starting a new series entitled Course Corrections. In this first installment our guest speaker Bruxy Cavey lays the groundwork in examining how internalizing the gospel message actually affects our lives. In the past century the gospel has often times been minimized as a ticket out of here, instead of an example to be imitated of how we actually live in the here and now. As Bruxy said, "the gospel is not just a message that saves people, it is the message that saved people live by."
