Ever heard a phrase from the pulpit that made you cringe? But not only cringe, distinctly left you on the outside looking in in a community you're supposed to belong to? Let's talk about that. Let's talk about spiritual bypassing. Let's also talk about why mental health is still a touchy subject in churches. Dr. Peace Amadi visits the show to share her expertise on the pursuit of wholeness from spirit, body, and emotions. We've been given this body and our somatic experiences and our emotions by design, they're for our survival. They are part of us. There's no part of our selves that need to be cut off. And it takes skill to become more attuned to what our bodies need. - Dr Peace. We start with an intro and context for Dr. Peace and her work. We then transition to spiritual bypassing in the church and what it means to find belonging in full. Following that we interrogate the work marginalized folks need to do as we develop new skills around embodiment and mental health? We ask, what does a healthy response look like to systemic oppression? We end with glimpses, thoughts, previews of what a healthier, more liberated, community space (our context is the church) can look like, and what the key features might be and how leaders and those in power need to shift. Safety and belonging being two core attributes. That's it. The pursuit of safety and belonging, bringing our whole selves to the table. Let's go! About Dr. Peace Amadi From leaders, content creators, and entrepreneurs, to pastors, parents, and teachers, Dr. Peace is a coach and cheerleader to the people in our lives that everyone goes to. She is the Author of Why Do I Feel Like This? Understand Your Difficult Emotions and Find Grace to Move Through which hit #1 on Amazon's New Releases for Mental Health during its launch. In this book, she merges clinical insight and faith to encourage readers to listen to the hidden messages of their emotions rather than spiritually-bypass them. She's also the co-author of the highly anticipated ChiChi & Didi multi-book children's book series, set to release in 2024. She's a Professor of Psychology (ie. social psych, media psych, child psych, trauma, psych and religion, psych and law) at Hope International University. And she's a recurring TV Host— her most recent work as a co-host on The Blend – a digital, medical talk show co-hosted by four Black doctors. Her work is inspired by her own journey. As one example, she's battled the enduring impacts of childhood bullying – and the depression and anxiety that came along with it – and thus speaks from both personal and professional experience about the importance of recognizing one's pain, healing from it, and transforming it into personal power and influence. As a speaker, author + coach, Dr Peace has: delivered a TEDx talk about the impact of social media on self-esteem and mental health been invited to speak at UCLA, Yale, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Biola, and Azusa Pacific University among others. panelled alongside Hollywood producers and A-list actors to discuss race, justice, racial trauma and other concerns uniquely Black & African peoples. been published in the Journal of Psychology & Theology. been featured live on ABC NEWS, CBN News, Newsy, as well as in Women's Health, Essence, Blavity, Propel Women, Relevant Magazine, Mental Illness Happy Hour, numerous other podcasts, and top influencer blogs. In this special episode, Steve Carter talks to one of his mentors, Dr. Joe Grana, a longtime professor and dean at Hope International University, and currently a teaching pastor at The Refinery Christian Church in Arizona. Dr. Grana explains the importance of hermeneutics (the process of interpreting Scripture) and how it rescues teachers from the highly subjective “reader's response” approach to Bible study. Rather than shoehorning a passage into what we think it means, preachers can discover its original (and timeless) meaning by following three basic steps: Observation Interpretation Application After showing these three steps in action, using Luke 4:14-21 as his anchor text, Dr. Grana shares his vision for 2023: to grow in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. Corrie ten Boom is ardently admired today as the ringleader of an underground movement in the Netherlands that saved hundreds of Jews during the Holocaust. This work that she is known for occurred during the span of two years of obedience to God and led to her incarceration in a Nazi concentration camp. At several points, she struggled to comprehend how she could live out God's commands, pleading with Him to provide for her needs. And He did, proving that Biblical miracles aren't limited to the Bible. Here is Corrie's story. Epi 74 – Interview with Mike Goldsworthy In this episode, the Rev. Rob Schenck speaks with Mike Goldsworthy, a ministry leader working in the spaces of deconstruction and reconstruction in post-evangelical communities. For 19 years, Mike served on staff with Parkcrest Christian Church in Long Beach, CA, with the last 11 of those years as the Lead Pastor. When he left that church, he shifted his focus to connecting and mentoring individuals and communities as they walk through transitions of deconstruction and reconstruction of their faith. He is an Adjunct Professor of Ministry and Bible at Hope International University and partners with Slingshot Group as a church staffing and coaching associate. What happens when one's personal faith begins to theologically shift away from a church's public stance? How do churches focus on the types of people they are forming? What would happen if Christianity wasn't about making more Christians but helping humanity live a flourishing life together? Listen in as Rob and Mike discuss Bonhoeffer's own struggles with church structure and reimagine a way for today's “ecclesiastical homeless” to connect and build church communities in new forms and landscapes. -- Resources: TDBI on Twitter TDBI on Facebook TDBI on Instagram Read Mike Goldsworthy's website Listen to Mike Goldsworthy's Podcast Follow Mike Goldsworthy on Instagram Register for the Post-Evangelical Collective: 2022 Gathering

For 19 years, Mike served on staff with Parkcrest Christian Church in Long Beach, CA. The last 11 of those years, he served as the Lead Pastor, transitioning the church towards multiplication models of church planting and discipleship communities, while also shifting a largely homogenous church towards more diversity, helping to create experiences for the church to live in the biblical tension of unity in the midst of diversity. Currently, in addition to teaching as an Adjunct Professor of Ministry and Bible at Hope International University, he helps churches and church leaders engage with nuance and thoughtfulness in difficult conversations that they are often not having. He guides and mentors individuals as they walk through transitions of deconstruction and reconstruction of their faith. He also works with churches and leaders who are finding new ways for the church to move forward in post-evangelical realities. He and his wife Allison have been married for over 20 years, with two teenage children. In the summers, you will often find them hiking, biking and camping together.

Michael Shepherd is an adjunct professor of intercultural studies and political science at Hope International University and a teaching elder at First Christian Church in Fullerton. Before his current role as a stay-at-home-dad, he worked in nonprofit leadership and community organizing for housing solutions in Orange County, CA.TextJohn 2:13-222:13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.2:14 In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables.2:15 Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.2:16 He told those who were selling the doves, "Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father's house a marketplace!"2:17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me."2:18 The Jews then said to him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?"2:19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."2:20 The Jews then said, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?"2:21 But he was speaking of the temple of his body.2:22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.Quotes:“The way we understand Jesus at one point in our life may not be what we need to continue growing in faith and we have to look to others to learn.”“We do not have to go far off or change ourselves to encounter his spirit, but that he shows up to our spaces--incarnates--to transform them by his justice and liberating love. And when we follow after justice and liberating love, we will find Jesus there. Perhaps surprisingly.”“Something that I am learning now is that my faith is not just about self-denial, but discovery and delight as well. It is pushing me further into vulnerability but also bringing back some foundational stories of how Jesus shows God’s extravagant love to all people, which includes me too.”

Erik Neilson continues our chapel theme "Good News" this year. He shares connections from Deut. 5 and Mt. 15:1-11 through facts about Pharisees. He relates these facts to the modern-day Pharisee. Who are the modern-day Pharisees? Listen to find out! Erik is the pastor at High Plains Christian Church. He has been married to Laura for 26 years and has two grown children. In his spare time, Erik likes hiking, hunting, fishing, college football, and working out! He graduated from Ozark Christian University for his undergrad and Hope International University for graduate work. In 2002, the Neilson family planted Adventure Christian Church in McMinnville, OR. Sensing God's call again they're moving to Twin Falls, ID to start a brand new church. The theme for the 2020-21 year is Good News. The Greek word that is translated as “gospel” is εὐαγγέλιον (euangelion), or literally “good news.” It is a word that is used diversely in scripture. Professors, students, and guests dissect the various ways in which the "gospel" is referenced and played out in Scripture. Learn more about Boise Bible College at www.boisebible.edu. In today's episode, I am joined by Dr. Curtis Holtzen to discuss his recent book, The God Who Trusts. We discuss open theism, human free will, the nature of trust, and the emotional life of God. We even consider whether or not Calvinists and Molinists can affirm the biblical theme of divine trust. I also ask Curtis to consider some objections to his view based on the doctrine of the Trinity. GUEST: Mary Margaret Bawden felt God call her into prayer-in-motion at fifteen years of age soon after she asked Jesus into her heart as her personal Savior. Although highly trained in ballet, she found herself attracted to the varied choreographic approaches found in modern dance. As a result, she received a B.A. in modern dance from UC Riverside in 1975; for a short time after graduation, she became the dance instructor for Crafton College as well as Mt. San Jacinto Jr. College in the Southern California area. The arrival of her 3 children in 1976, 1978 and 1981 followed and changed her priorities in movement until her children grew older. Soul to Sole Choreography placed in the non-professional finalist category of the highly acclaimed ‘Festival of the Stars’ choreography festival held in Palm Springs at the McCallum Theatre in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Shea New, the founder/director of the festival, stated that the choice for the fall festival finalists was ‘difficult due to the overwhelming amount of quality talent submitted.’ Choreography finalists included entries from Argentina, Florida, Texas, New York, Arizona, Nevada, San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles. Alongside the educational movement foundation for worship ministry, Mary has taught choreography and/or DA:NCE materials for the National Sacred Dance Guild Conference, the CAHPERD(California health, physical education, recreation and dance) dance workshop, the Saddleback Worship Conference, “Raise the Barre” as well as the State CDEA(California Dance Educator’s Association) Conference and the NDEO(National Dance Educator’s Organization) National Conference. In Redlands, California, God has used Mary’s love of prayer-in-motion to design scripture for women’s Bible studies, church services and Children’s Christmas musicals at her home church. Since 1995, the much of Mary’s time has focused on a book entitled ‘Dance is Prayer in Motion: Soul to Sole Choreography for Church Dance Ministry.’ The chapters include information on dance movement foundation, leadership, choreography tools, the 6-step choreography method, the rehearsal process, and a chapter for pastors who want clear expectations for setting up a dance ministry in their own church. Part of the written material also shares how God has given her a vision to structure movement groups so that everyone can learn how to choreograph with or without a movement background. In 2006, Mary furthered her education when she received a Master of Arts in Worship with an emphasis in dance from Hope International University in Fullerton, California. From Mary’s point of view, prayer-in-motion must be purposeful and conceptually clear. Of course, clarity also informs her passion to communicate the benefits of dance for children so that they are not hypersexualized with adult costumes, choreography and music. Her background includes a California secondary and junior college teaching credential as well as many years as an inductive Bible study leader. She has been involved with Bible Study Fellowship, Kay Arthur’s Precepts Bible Studies as well as women’s bible studies at Trinity Evangelical Church in Redlands, CA where Mary and her husband Richard attend.

We’re talking about the 340B Program with Karen White, the CEO of Missouri Highlands Healthcare, Dennis Shelby, the CEO of Wilson Medical Center, and Austin Gillard, CEO of Clay County Medical Center. Karen, Dennis and Austin were 2018-2019 Rural Health Fellows with the National Rural Health Association (NRHA), where they focused on rural preparedness, culminating in a Policy Paper presented to and adapted by the NRHA Rural Health Congress. “In our study, it was determined that 55% of rural hospitals would close if it were not for the 340B Program.” Dennis Shelby has worked in healthcare for 40 years. He began his career as a medical social worker and for the last 26 years, has held various hospital CEO positions. His journey involved stents in top leadership positions in psychiatric, rehabilitation and rural hospitals. He believes healthcare is a calling and ministry. He received the 2014 Custom Learning System “Inspiring Administrator” Award and was the 2016 Founders Award recipient for that same organization for over 30 years of committed leadership in the healthcare field. He is the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Becker’s “50 Rural Hospital CEO’s To Know.” In 2018 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award for his leadership in healthcare from Hope International University. He and his wife of 44 years, Judy, have two amazing daughters and 4 grandchildren. “We have to be strong proponents for each other. We cannot be silos.” Karen R. White joined Missouri Highlands Health Care, a Federally Qualified Health Center, in March 2009 as the Chief Financial Officer. Through her drive, integrity and work ethic, she provided financial leadership, growing the organization into a sustainable & viable health care provider while overcoming significant financial challenges. In October 2014, she furthered her passion for community health by stepping into the CEO position for Missouri Highlands. Since that time, she has led the organization through transformation & growth, embracing the challenges of providing primary care in seven rural counties in the southern Missouri Ozarks region. Ms. White has continually sought unique care delivery options to better serve the rural population and while focusing on breaking down existing silos in providing care across the continuum of care community. White, a certified public accountant (CPA), obtained her Bachelors of Applied Science in Administration with concentration in Marketing and Management from Southwest Baptist University in 1994 and her Masters in Accountancy from Missouri State University in 2007. White’s parents are credited with instilling in her a strong work ethic, drive to succeed and commitment to serving others. “Growing up, my parents served as strong role models of integrity and faith. They never compromised their message of service, hard work and education as the path to success. This coupled with my desire to not have to feed 250 head of cattle for the rest of my life drove me to succeed.” “340B is vital for our rural to stay viable…” Austin Gillard was raised in Overland Park, Kansas.
