The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad! Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. Fire goes before him, and consumes his adversaries on every side. His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his righteousness; and all the peoples behold his glory. All worshipers of images are put to shame, those who make their boast in worthless idols; all gods bow down before him. Zion hears and is glad, and the towns of Judah rejoice, because of your judgments, O God. For you, O Lord, are most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods. The Lord loves those who hate evil; he guards the lives of his faithful; he rescues them from the hand of the wicked. Light dawns for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart. Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name! ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭97:1-12‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

Why in the world are we here? One purpose is that we are to expand God's reign in the world. This message will explore evangelism through the lens of Acts 8. Acts 8:424 (NSAB) 4 Therefore, those who had been scattered went about preaching the word. 5 Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming Christ to them. 6 The crowds with one accord were giving attention to what was said by Philip, as they heard and saw the signs which he was performing. 7 For in the case of many who had unclean spirits, they were coming out of them shouting with a loud voice; and many who had been paralyzed and lame were healed. 8 So there was much rejoicing in that city. 9 Now there was a man named Simon, who formerly was practicing magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great; 10 and they all, from smallest to greatest, were giving attention to him, saying, This man is what is called the Great Power of God. 11 And they were giving him attention because he had for a long time astonished them with his magic arts. 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike. 13 Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed. 14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit. 20 But Peter said to him, May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! 21 You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. 22 Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity. 24 But Simon answered and said, Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me. Luke 4:14-30 & Matthew 9:35-10:23 -- We are all called. We are all sent. But let us learn about what we are called and sent into before we venture into this world of faith and ministry. We get a clear picture from various Gospel encounters, particularly these two, when it comes to what sharing the good news of the arrival of God's Reign and Rule may mean for our way of life. For the most part, humanity finds a certain comfort in thinking they already have the right way of life. To challenge this comfort can bring all sorts of reaction. Given the racial circumstances before us in protests and a call for reform and change, we must confront ourselves--have we convinced ourselves that our way of life is right when, in fact, it is seriously flawed? Racial inequality and injustice has been with our culture for centuries. Suddenly, everyone is witnessing an awakening. But we are all responding to this awakening in different ways. How should the church respond? Before we begin to dissect that question, let us first LISTEN & LEARN. Especially if we are not a church where inequality and injustice has been at the forefront of our experience and perspective, we need to understand long before we try to be understood. Let's listen and learn from those who are lifting their voice. Let's listen to our own hearts and emotions as we listen, learn, and respond. What have we got to lose? More importantly, what have we got to gain? Are you ready to join in the biblically rooted art of listening?

Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

With anxiety off the charts as a growing epidemic among children and teens, I want to spend this week offering some strategies you can employ to prevent anxiety in the kids you know and love. Perhaps the most effective strategy is to teach them to preach the Gospel to themselves. Teach them to speak to their hearts, telling their hearts to follow the Gospel rather than allowing their hearts to speak to them. You see, our feelings are not trustworthy. They can lead us astray. They are especially dangerous during times of emotional highs and lows. While the mantra of today’s culture is “follow and trust your heart,” the mantra for the Christian should be “follow and trust the Gospel.” I have found the words of this old hymn to be helpful: “God is God, he sees and hears, all our troubles, all our tears. Soul forget not, ‘mid your pains, God o’er all forever reigns. Fear not Death nor Satan’s thrusts, God defends who in Him trusts. Soul, remember in your pains, God o’er all forever reigns!”

Isaiah 49:1-7 & John 1:29-42 --- On this Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday we celebrate the gift of the prophets and our struggle to understand their message. Biblical prophecy was not about telling the future. Rather, it was about seeing the past and present with a fuller clarity--unveiled. From this clear perception of reality, our prophets could understand where we were headed. When Israel's kings were not obeying the leading of God, the prophets could see it and boldly spoke truth about where such disobedience would lead both the king and his people. The prophet Isaiah understood God's plan for Israel with such clarity that he proclaimed the hope and truth for a people who had been decimated by war and exile. Jesus came and proclaimed to a war-bent Israel about the certain destruction awaiting them if they did not turn around and live by God's Reign (kingdom). But...sadly...people often resist prophets. When others see something we do not, we struggle to open our eyes--especially if "our" way of seeing things benefits us. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. proclaimed a bold truth about the reality of the 20th century and race relations. Many people would not hear it. Many more were left "undecided" or "moderate" in their stance. Let us remember the message of the prophets so that we might understand that a life of faith is about the Holy Spirit entering into our heart of hearts to begin the RECALIBRATION of our lives. We've all gotten off track. We're human--that's just the struggle we face. We MUST allow God to RECALIBRATE our hearts to how they were meant to function and exist. Will you fully open up your heart to God in such a way?

What is God’s government like?  Jesus told lots of stories to help us understand! Multiple time Jesus says, "The kingdom of God is like. . ." and "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like . . . ." Ironically, Jesus told these stories to conceal the Kingdom as much as reveal it (Mt. 13:13)!  “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ (Lk. 8:10) May our eyes see and our ears hear! “I will open my mouth in parables;I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.” (Mt. 13:35) “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables," (Mk. 4:11) At Manthanos//Kairos we had a good time acting out these stories of Jesus that conceal and reveal life under His reign.  Here we do a "light speed" review of these stories. :) Mt. 13:31-33 “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.” "The reputed son of a carpenter instructs a few simple fisherman in a new dispensation destitute of world incentives, but full of self-denials, sacrifices, and suffering, and he tells them that in about forty years it should spread over the entire world.  It spreads accordingly, and in defiance of the bigotry of the Jews and the authority, power and active opposition of the Gentiles, it is established, within that period, in all the countries into which in penetrates.  Can anyone doubt that the prediction and its fulfillment were equally divine?" (George Peter Halford, 1805) Col 1:23 the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister. Mt. 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. Mt. 24:34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Mt. 10:23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. Mt. 13:44-45 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it. Mt. 18:23-35 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.” Mt. 22:2-14 “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’ But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. And he said to him, Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.” Mt. 13:47-50 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mk. 4:13-14 And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? The sower sows the word. Mk. 4:11 “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God. . . .”

During the Second World War, members of the Resistance in France lived under German occupation but looked forward to the restoration of rightful rule of their land, and to liberation from the Nazi war machine.  In a similar way, you could say, the people of God live in "occupied territory," working and longing for God's full reign and rule over all creation, which is God's "territory," as well.  And just as the exiled French leaders did not simply give up on returning to the mainland in order to settle for living away from home in England, God has not given up on restoring and redeeming all of creation, including the world that lives in rebellion against God's ways of justice and mercy.  In the end, praying for God's will and God's Reign/Kingdom is about being a part of God's Resistance movement, dedicated to hoping for and living in light of the promised future when God's Reign fills all the universe and beyond.  And because of that, we realize that praying for God's will to be done is not just "out there," but inside our own hearts, in every corner where we are turned against God's ways and God's love for all.  Pastors Erica and Steve take a look at this part of what we call the Lord's Prayer, to consider what it looks like where and when God reigns.  Join them for this conversation in the ongoing series about the Lord's Prayer.

Sometimes we get a picture in our head of how we think God "has" to act... and then God surprises us.  It's there at the heart of the Christian faith--in the midst of expectations of a king to liberate the people like David from Israel's collective memory, there comes Jesus of Nazareth, who defies expectations and announces God's Reign, not by overthrowing the Romans in a bloody revolt, but right under the nose of the empire and while being executed by the Romans, too.  Prophets like Isaiah were hopeful and excited about a promised coming ruler who would finally put things right--but even Isaiah would never have guessed that the Chosen One he dreamed of would look like the itinerant rabbi Jesus.  In our own lives, too, we have a way of pinning down our expcectations of how God "should" act or what God "has to" do in our lives--and the living God always reserves the right to defy our expectations and surprise us... And that's what Advent is really all about--the intentional time for Christians to pause and let God surprise us again as we look to Jesus.  Join Pastors Steve and Erica as they open up a conversation about the God who surprises...

Matthew 20:1-16 A parable is an invitation to struggle within; that you will be renewed, challenged, and pushed into a new understanding of yourself, God, and your world...  That is, of course, if you open you accept the invitation. Jesus encounters a young man (Luke's author refers to him as a rich man) who is seeking to understand how he may enter into God's Reign.  Jesus has a conversation with him which leads to the man walking away sad. The disciples are perplexed and begin asking their own questions.  They ultimately want to know--what we all want to know--"Who can be saved?" Also, they want to know what they will get for their work. Jesus tells a parable in response; to explain what the [Kingdom] Reign of God is like. You are invited into the story. Join us as we venture into the holy struggle.

In Matthew 6, Jesus is saying fundamentally, prayer is communication between a safe, secure, fully loved and accepted child and her heavenly Father. So, if we know the Father knows what we need beforehand, why should we ask? What's at the heart of prayer? Unlike the many pagan gods, who might be manipulated and appeased by many words, the Father's love is perfect and complete. He longs for us. So we're asked to come before him knowing he already knows all our needs. And our own sense of need may not be what we actually need. Often I'm caught up in petitions that really aren't the point. Apart from all the many sources of anxiety which often populate my prayer, perhaps the true need is to simply be in his presence ... in silence and solitude. Prayer is closing the door on those distractions to be with the Father. The chapter ends with addressing our disordered way of striving through life, anxious and fearful of lack ... "What shall we eat? or 'What shall we drink? or What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things (those who are hooked in the bondage of sin and death and have no sense of being loved by the ONE TRUE Heaven Father ... even heretical attempts at distorting God's heavenly FATHERHOOD as mere misogynistic Patriarchy). He repeats, "Your heavenly Father knows that you need them. The mission of Jesus was to show us the FATHER. Heavenly Patriarchy brings freedom to the captives. BUT seek first his kingdom (the Father's Kingdom) and his righteousness (alms, prayer, fasting as a means), and all these things will be given to you as well. It doesn't say don't seek them, don't attend to them ... but priorities them under God's Reign. First of all, seek God then attend, in communion with Him, the issues of life. He knows you need them but do we know that we need HIM far more than such needs? Look at your priorities and you'll know the answer. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of it's own. Jesus is saying prioritize your life or your life will be disordered and filled with anxiety. Jesus is not saying never plan or think about the future ... short and long term planning is essential. He says take no ANXIOUS thought about tomorrow ... don't let your thoughts entertain worry and fear ... DELIVER us from evil ... So, in light of knowing we are beloved children of a loving Father who already knows our true need - reconciliation with God and humanity - he says that we should pray ... OUR FATHER in heaven ... prayer is secret is never alone ... Bonhoeffer, p. 77 Let him who cannot be alone beware of community ... Let him who is not in community beware of being alone. (Life Together) Silence and Solitude is the soil condition for receiving the Word implanted.
