Robbie Jones wrote a book called Backslide, and I went in expecting a chronicle of every way a Southern Baptist kid from Jackson, Mississippi cursed or lusted in middle school. That is not what this book is. Robbie takes a word that in our shared upbringing was entirely personal and entirely theological, and puts it next to the way political scientists now use the same word to describe what is happening to American democracy. The two stories are not separate. He can prove it with the word white Christians used to name their victory over Reconstruction: redemption. This is the fourth book in ten years — The End of White Christian America, White Too Long, The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy, and now this one, which pops back to the present and asks: okay, now what? We got into the Bright Line Watch numbers, why Martin Niemöller is a more useful guide for American Christians than Bonhoeffer, the finding that made Robbie go home at 2:30 in the afternoon, the estate settlement he added to his family Bible before passing it to his kids, the war on empathy, and then the back half of the book — where Robbie argues polarization is the wrong diagnosis and writes a chapter called "Embracing Division." Jones traces how "backsliding" carries both theological and political-science meanings, citing survey data showing measurable democratic erosion (from a rating of 67 down to 54, with a projected drop to 47) and arguing white Christianity, not just American democracy, is in "apostasy," pointing to majority white evangelical support for immigrant detention camps as a bright line. Onishi then walks through American Caesar's core argument: that Reconstructionist Protestants, radical traditional Catholics, and tech-world figures have formed a loose coalition around "saving Western civilization," a discourse he argues is really about excluding Muslims, African and Latin American migrants, and anyone outside a narrow white Christian identity, while reaching back not to the 1950s but toward a fantasy of medieval Christendom. The two discuss Hannah Arendt's writing on inner resistance versus external compliance, the media's reluctance to scrutinize Christian nationalism the way it would Islam, and the resurgence of arguments for restricting women to domestic roles. They close on a note of qualified hope: polling suggests a majority of Americans favor religious pluralism and multiculturalism even though a minority currently holds power, and both authors call for renewing—rather than simply restoring—a democratic and theological imagination for a generation to whom "democracy" no longer means much on its own. Jey won the Rumble, beat Gunther, made the kids happy, and now all of that's gone and it "sucks" to be Jey Uso. Solo said he's not coming back to the Bloodline because he loves where he's at. They agreed to a match — Jey wins, he delivers Solo to Roman. Solo wins, the Bloodline leaves him alone forever. Solo's "Pew!" mock warning shot was tremendous. Crowd, unfortunately, was completely dead.Penta beat Laredo Kid in round one of the Number One Contender's Tournament — winner faces Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Title at the Mexico City RAW. Becky Lynch came out, said Liv's reign is dragging the title back to the mid-2000s, but also said Vaquer gets injured too much to deserve a shot — the title's coming back to HER. Liv attacked Becky from behind, Becky blocked the Oblivion and suplexed her. Vaquer and Lynch had another cold staredown. The church at Corinth was filled with people who loved sin yet they had said “Yes!” to Jesus and Paul calls them holy. This entire letter is Paul answering questions for them that tries to correct their sinful choices as they continue to give into temptations. The believers in Corinth were very prideful and arrogant, they were products of their culture, yet they are full of the Holy Spirit and should have a change in their behavior that is opposite of their culture. They all believed they were in good standing with God even though they were living in sin so Paul tells them, “Take heed” or “Pay close attention...” because if you don't, you are going to fall.

I've received a lot of reader emails like the one below from reader Jeannie.I feel like I'm seeing so many people, including dietitians and doctors, who used to be staunchly non diet getting back on the weight loss bandwagon. Suddenly they're all “you can fight weight stigma and promote weight loss” and “o-word is a metabolic disease” - and “use people first language” and it's like they were claiming to be non diet but it was only because they didn't think they could shrink us but now they think these drugs can and they are showing their true (anti fat) colors and people (including doctors) I thought respected me and believed in non diet care are showing me that they've always thought I would be better thin, or that my fatness is a disease, they just didn't think they could make me thin (or not “diseased”) and now they do. No Christian ever plans on backsliding, that is, moving away from Christ. Yet it happens. The prophet Jeremiah even admitted, “Our backslidings are many” (Jeremiah 14:7). Sometimes, a city can be in shambles because the lives of its people are in shambles. Nehemiah left Jerusalem for a short time and returned to find the people had gone back to practicing their old ways. Let's consider four mistakes they made and how to prevent them from happening to us.I. Misplace Your Bible (vv. 1-3)II. Misalign Your Companions (vv. 4-9)III. Misarrange Your Priorities (vv. 10-22)IV. Mismanage Your Family (vv. 23-24)Talk with God: Prayerfully consider the people you turn to for encouragement and advice. “Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.” (Philippians 1:27 NLT) Revival is necessary because sometimes our Christian faith becomes routine. It loses its spark. If this “routineness” continues, it can lead to backsliding—that is, a turning away from God and His will to pursue the pleasures of this world. If you’ve experienced it or seen it happen firsthand, you know that backsliding doesn’t happen overnight. You don’t call up your mature Christian friend and say, “Hey, do you want to backslide tonight? Seriously? Okay, I’ll pick you up at seven.” Backsliding usually starts with tolerating something that’s sinful, something you never would have gone near before. Maybe it’s curiosity, maybe it’s the influence of other people, but instead of rejecting it out of hand and making sure to avoid it, you open your mind to it. You sort of put up with it and maybe even play around with it, thinking, “This isn’t going to hurt me. I’m too strong, too mature in my faith. I’ve walked with the Lord for a long time. I could recite a half dozen Bible verses about resisting temptation and making wise decisions.” All the while, the devil is grinning as he watches you justify your shift in thinking and blur some of the lines you previously refused to cross. And then he does whatever he can to facilitate the process. Feeding the urge to backslide is one of his most potent battlefield maneuvers. Have you ever seen a baby rattlesnake? As you would imagine, it has little fangs and a little tail and a little rattle. You might even call it cute if you’re into that sort of thing. Until it bites you. Did you know that the venom of a baby rattlesnake is more potent than that of an adult rattlesnake? In the same way, the subtle shifts away from God and His will may seem harmless at first. Backsliding starts with accommodating. You turn a blind eye to something. Then you give in to it and legitimize it. And then you start making excuses for it and defending it. The next thing you know, you embrace it as a normal lifestyle. But that’s not the behavior of a real saint, of a real follower of Jesus. If you want to finish well in the race of life and live joyfully, if you want God to complete the work He has begun in you, then you need to press on as a follower of Christ. He will give you the strength to do it. But you need to ask for that strength every day. Reflection question: What are you being tempted to turn a blind eye to?
