On this episode Matt and I are driving TO the Lotus factory IN a Lotus Emira. We give our take on the cars, events, and cost of Goodwood. Then we discuss the pros and alarming cons of the hale bale safety system. Then, roundabouts versus stop signs, and a somewhat scientific breakdown of our personal difficulties driving from the right-hand seat. Lastly we answer Patreon questions regarding: which car we would drive up the Goodwood Hill, why “quick hands” won't save Mustangs from Cars and Coffee mishaps; the Ineos Grenadier; which UK cars caught our eye; the deal with eggs; which 2+2 delivers a “roadster-like” experience, and more. Show #881 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 2nd September 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Welcome to a new PATREON PARTNER RAJEEV NARAYAN Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. LUCID MOTORS CLAIMS ITS FIRST EV COVERS A QUARTER MILE IN 9.9 SECONDS "One week ahead of its big reveal event, Lucid Motors is ready to brag about how fast its all-electric luxury sedan is. In a video shared today, Lucid Motors shows its Lucid Air covering a quarter mile of racetrack in just 9.9 seconds. According to the company, the EV is “the world’s quickest production sedan.”" writes Engadget: "Lucid Air’s 1,080-horsepower powertrain allows the vehicle to reach 60 MPH in under 2.5 seconds, Autoblog points out. Lucid explained today that the EV comes with two electric drive units. Each packs over 650 horsepower and is small enough to fit inside a standard airplane carry-on." https://www.engadget.com/lucid-motors-air-ev-quarter-mile-99-seconds-142151709.html NISSAN DELIVERED ITS 500,000TH LEAF "Nissan celebrates today the delivery of 500,000th LEAF (since December 2010) to a customer in Norway - one of the biggest markets for the LEAF. Since there is no press release yet, let's take a look at Bjorn Nyland's report. With about 44,000 sales, Norway took almost 9% of the total LEAF volume, and we are aware that thousands of more used LEAFs were imported to Norway, so there might now be well over 10% of all LEAFs ever made located somewhere in Norway." says InsideEVs: "Nissan LEAF was the all-time #1 for a long time, even through 2019/2020, when LEAF was at about 450,000. Then, Model 3 overtook LEAF and it will not change, as the Model 3 is selling at a level higher" https://insideevs.com/news/442006/nissan-leaf-500000th-delivered TESLA’S BATTERY STRATEGY HAS “NO ADVANTAGE,” FORD CEO SAYS "Tesla’s battery strategy will not be adopted by legacy automotive company Ford, because Jim Hackett, the company’s CEO, says there is “no advantage” in migrating capital into owning a cell manufacturing facility. During Ford’s Q2 2020 Earnings Call in late July, Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas asked about the company’s strategy to produce EV batteries in-house, as opposed to sourcing the cells from third-party companies like Panasonic and LG Chem." picks up TEslarati: "Hackett, who elected to retire from his post as head of Ford earlier this year, stated that his team did a “deep dive” on whether it was advantageous to create its own battery cells. It proved not to be advantageous for Ford. Instead, the company will continue to go the path that it is now, which requires sourcing batteries from third-party suppliers instead of researching and improving on cells within the company’s facilities across the world." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-battery-strategy-ford-no-advantage/ TESLA (TSLA) ANNOUNCES $5 BILLION CAPITAL RAISE "Tesla (TSLA) today announced a $5 billion capital raise to take advantage of the stock price’s meteoric rise. While Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously said that the company wasn’t interested in a new capital raise as it believed it was capable to finance its ambitious growth through its operations, it looks like they couldn’t resist following the stock price increase" reports Electrek today: "It’s Tesla’s second capital raise in 2020. The automaker raised $2 billion in February. Like with the last capital raise, Tesla doesn’t specify any use of the proceed other than “strengthening the balance sheet”. The sale of $5 billion new shares is going to put some pressure on the incredible run of Tesla’s stock price over the last month and it is already feeling the effect." https://electrek.co/2020/09/01/tesla-tsla-5-billion-capital-raise/ NEW VOLKSWAGEN ID 3: FIRST EXAMPLES OF EV HIT BRITISH SHORES "Volkswagen's pivotal EV, the ID 3, has finally reached British shores as the first customer examples roll off the ship at Grimsby port. Earmarked for customers that pre-booked First Edition examples earlier this year, the fully-loaded models will be delivered over the next month. Volkswagen claims that the entire production and delivery process is carbon neutral, even including the shipping" says James Atwood at Autocar: "The limited-run First Edition models are priced from £38,880 and were offered only to people who previously placed a £750 deposit. First Edition versions of the ID 3 will feature the mid-size 'Pro' battery offering a claimed range of 260 miles. General sales of the ID 3 are due to begin in the UK in the coming weeks, and the model will eventually be offered in seven main variants, with three different battery capacities and two power outputs. The first machines that have arrived in Britain will be without some of the App Connect, but those who take delivery of them will be given membership of a 'First Movers' club, which will include an eventual software update to install the software. Those leasing cars also won't pay any rates for the first three months." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-volkswagen-id-3-first-examples-ev-hit-british-shores EVS AND HYBRIDS GET AN EXTENSION TO MEET US NOISE-MAKING REQUIREMENTS " Automakers will get at least six more months to meet new federal requirements for noise-making devices on electric cars and hybrids, Reuters reported Friday. The extension is being granted due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The so-called "quiet car" rule requires electrified vehicles to emit noises at speeds up to 18.6 mph as a warning to pedestrians and cyclists. Lack of exhaust noise makes cars harder to hear at these speeds, but tire noise, wind buffeting, and other sounds pick up at higher speeds, regulators have said." says Green Car Repotrs. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1129448_evs-and-hybrids-get-an-extension-to-meet-us-noise-making-requirements VOLKSWAGEN ID.R ELECTRIC RACE CAR RETURNS TO GOODWOOD Welcome back, Volkswagen ID.R! 411 days after the record-breaking drive up Tianmen Mountain in China, the fully-electric race car returns to action at Goodwood SpeedWeek (16.–18.10.2020). After the coronavirus pandemic caused the cancellation of both the Goodwood Festival of Speed (FoS) and the Goodwood Revival, the organisers have launched a new event: Goodwood SpeedWeek, at which historic race cars meet present vehicles and visions of the future. As the three-day automotive festival will take place behind closed doors, there will be extensive digital reporting, including multiple livestreams. Having taken victory at the Festival of Speed for the past two years with the 500-kW (680-PS) ID.R, Volkswagen Motorsport travels to the south of England with a new challenge: SpeedWeek is not taking place on Goodwood Hill, but at the 3.809-kilometre Goodwood Motor Circuit. NORWAY IN AUGUST — OVER 70% EV MARKET SHARE AND HEADING HIGHER "Clean transport transition leader Norway hit a huge 70.2% plugin passenger vehicle market share in August, up from 49% a year ago. Pure battery electrics alone took 53% of the market. September is already showing signs of being a record breaking month with the Tesla Model 3, VW ID.3, and Polestar 2 all showing up in volume." according to Dr Max Holland in CleanTechnica: "The top selling BEVs in August were the mostly the recent usual suspects, but the Polestar 2 started it’s deliveries in earnest, and jumped in to a very creditable #4 spot. The Mercedes Benz EQC has showed up in decent numbers again in August, as it did in July" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/09/02/norway-in-august-over-70-ev-market-share-and-heading-higher/ You can listen to all 880 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #519 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 5th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. LIGHTYEAR ONE SOLAR-CHARGING EV MAKES UK DEBUT "Dutch start-up Lightyear has shown off a prototype of its One long-range solar car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed." reports Autocar: "The One is a lightweight, four-wheel drive, coupé-style four-door, which Lightyear says will offer a range of around 450 miles on the WLTP combined cycle from a solar-electric hybrid powertrain. The static prototype was first revealed in June, and makes its public debut at the Sussex event. Lightyear claims the One is able to achieve this segment-leading range even with a much smaller battery than that found in equivalent BEVs, because it consumes much less energy than conventional electric cars. Each wheel is independently driven, minimising loss of energy throughout the drivetrain, while the use of ultra-light materials for its body construction reduces strain on the battery’s output." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows-goodwood-festival-speed/lightyear-one-solar-charging-ev-makes-uk-debut HONDA E SILENTLY CLIMBS THE GOODWOOD HILL LOOKING ADORABLE "Honda E is a small electric vehicle created primarily for city use. With a range of around 124 miles (200 km) from its 35.5-kWh battery, this isn’t the EV to buy if you plan on taking extended trips while suffering from range anxiety." according to Motor1.com: "The Honda E wasn’t going particularly fast while climbing the famous hill, but it’s understandable considering it wasn’t a production-ready car. Bear in mind the final product won’t come cheap, with the rumor mill indicating it will cost somewhere in the region of €40,000 in Europe. That’s a lot of money to pay for such a small car that looks like a futuristic first-gen Civic, but it certainly does have its particular charm to woo customers. When can we expect to see the road-going E? Honda has said it will unveil it before the year’s end, so it might debut in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show." https://www.motor1.com/news/358198/honda-e-goodwood-fos-video/ VOLKSWAGEN TYPE 20 EV MICROBUS CONCEPT "Built to celebrate 20 years of VW's presence and technology in Silicon Valley, this electric VW Bus is a showcase for tech and packs a lot more horsepower than the original Type 2." says Car & Driver: "The Volkswagen Type 20 Microbus concept looks a whole lot like the classic 1962 Type 2 11-window bus on which it's based. Featuring a fully electric drivetrain, the Type 20 concept utilizes a single electric motor rated at 120 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. It's the product of VW's newly renamed Innovation and Engineering Center California (IECC), which is now the maker's largest vehicle research facility outside Germany. This is not, of course, the first electric VW Bus—the I.D. Buzz concept from 2018 comes to mind—but it looks a lot more like the 1962 model than that futuristic-looking concept did." https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a28280966/volkswagen-type-20-ev-microbus-concept/ TESLA MODEL 4 EURO NCAP SAFETY RATING "Tesla has extended its 5-star safety rating streak to Europe. In a new round of testing, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) awarded the Model 3 its highest rating of five stars. You can watch a video of Euro NCAP’s crash test below. As fun as it is to watch a Tesla Model 3 (or any vehicle) get pummeled in crash tests, understanding what helped push the company’s safety rating so high is far more interesting." reports TechCrunch today: "this assessment focused on the car’s active safety features such as automatic emergency braking system (AEB) or one that prevents drivers from unintentionally drifting into another lane. The Tesla Model 3 earned the highest safety assist score ever awarded by Euro NCAP under its newer 2018-2019 testing protocols." https://techcrunch.com/2019/07/04/watch-how-tesla-model-3-earned-its-5-star-safety-rating-from-euro-ncap/ MOTOE FINALLY SET FOR ELECTRIC DEBUT The inaugural weekend of MotoE™ is finally here as the new class take on the Sachsenring. the time has finally come for the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup to go racing. Preseason testing went well, including an E-Pole and race simulation in Valencia, and the grid of 18 riders are more than raring to race. The Sachsenring hosts the history-making weekend; a tight and twisty track that should be a stunning venue for MotoE™’s debut – with the machines having shown some impressive corner speed in testing. RARE SIGHT: POLESTAR 2 AT FASTNED CHARGING STATION "A Tesla Model 3 driver was lucky enough to come across two rare sights: first, Polestar 2 prototypes at a Fastned charging station. Then, a Porsche Taycan at another charging station." says InsideEVs: "Since the all-electric Porsche gets plenty of coverage, let's focus on the new Polestar 2, which will be available in 2020. The two black prototypes were out on road tests/charging tests and we must admit that they look amazing. These cars are very attractive, much like the Jaguar I-PACE. Perhaps this will have a positive impact on future sales." Polestar 2 specs: 78 kWh battery (324 pouch cells, 27 modules, liquid-cooled) target 500 km (311 miles) of WLTP range expected 275 miles (442 km) of EPA range 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds https://insideevs.com/news/358032/video-polestar-2-fastned-charging-station/ RENAULT UK UNVEILS NEW ‘ELECTRIFY JULY’ OFFERS Renault has unveiled its exciting ‘Electrify July’ sales event, which sees its entire range of electric vehicles available with an additional manufacturer contribution of up to £1,000. The ‘Electrify July’ offers are designed to make switching from traditionally-engined vehicles to EVs even more attractive, allowing motorists and businesses to reduce both their environmental footprint and driving costs. Leading the ‘Electrify July’ charge is the Renault ZOE, which through the offer is now available with an additional £1,000 contribution. Including the offer, the Dynamique Nav model is available from £17,420 and the S Edition version from £18,270 – making the ZOE the most affordable new four-seater EV in the UK.
