Executive VP Stella Li has directed engineers to keep European variants under 4.3 metres, with separate B- and C-segment standards, as BYD stops adapting China-market models and instead builds vehicles tailored to dense European cities.MAZDA DELAYS DEDICATED EV TO 2029Mazda has pushed back its first dedicated EV platform by two years to 2029 and cut EV investment by nearly half, shifting resources toward hybrids and China-sourced electrified products. Before 2029, Mazda will sell China-built EVs — effectively rebadged Changan Automobile models — in Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia.AUTOMAKERS SEEK NEW EU CO2 CONCESSIONSVolkswagen Group, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz met EU officials in Brussels on 13 May to press for further flexibility on the bloc's 2035 emissions targets, despite having already won concessions just months ago. Germany's VDA lobby warned that the country's auto sector could shed up to 125,000 additional jobs by 2035 without meaningful improvement in competitiveness.OPEL PREVIEWS 207 KW CORSA GSEOpel has revealed the all-electric Corsa GSE, which it claims will be the fastest-accelerating production Opel ever built, with a 0–100 km/h time of 5.5 seconds from a front-mounted 207 kW permanent magnet motor. The car rides on Stellantis' e-CMP platform and features a Torsen limited-slip differential, Alcon four-piston brakes, lowered sports suspension, and uprated battery thermal management.AUSTRALIA DELAYS FEDERAL EV ROAD CHARGEAustralia's federal government has paused its EV road user charge, opting to first develop a coordinated policy with state and territory governments following the High Court's 2023 ruling that struck down Victoria's version. The budget also restructures EV fringe benefits tax support, narrowing the full FBT exemption from April 2027 to EVs priced at A$75,000 or below on novated leases, before shifting to a 25% FBT reduction for all EVs under the luxury car tax threshold from April 2029.GERMAN OPERATORS BACK ELECTRIC TRUCKSA German study by the Institute for Applied Ecology found that 93% of transport companies already running electric trucks are satisfied or very satisfied, citing high reliability, driving comfort, and low operating costs. The same share expect electric trucks to become the standard fleet vehicle by 2030, though operators flagged high upfront costs and depot grid connection complexity as the main barriers.AI CHARGING METHOD CUTS EV BATTERY WEARResearchers at Chalmers University of Technology have developed an AI-driven fast-charging method using reinforcement learning that extends EV battery life by 23% without adding to charge times. The system adapts charging current to each battery's state of health and electrochemistry in real time, reducing internal wear and the risk of lithium plating compared to current one-size-fits-all charging protocols.FIRST BUS TESTS DEPOTS AS GRID ASSETSFirst Bus has launched a trial using its electric bus depot infrastructure to support the National Grid, intelligently scheduling charging to absorb surplus Scottish wind power that would otherwise be curtailed. The UK's largest electric bus operator, with over 1,400 zero-emission vehicles, argues the scheme can cut wasted renewable energy, support grid stability, and improve the economics of fleet electrification.LUCID PUTS UK LAUNCH BACK TO 2028Lucid has delayed its UK market entry to early 2028 — the third such postponement — with European President Lawrence Hamilton saying the firm must sequence its expansion carefully after entering seven or eight more continental European markets in 2026 first. Lucid will skip bringing the current Air and Gravity models to the UK, instead launching only on its new mid-size 800-volt platform with the Cosmos coupé-crossover and Earth SUV variants, built on the Atlas drive unit that cuts manufacturing costs by 37%.UK E-VAN RULES EASE FROM 2026From June 2026, the UK government will remove regulatory barriers for electric vans weighing between 3.5 and 4.25 tonnes, aligning them with equivalent diesel and petrol vehicles under the Class 7 MOT framework with a first MOT due after three years rather than one. Driver hours rules will also change, removing mandatory tachograph use and base-distance restrictions, with operators set to save up to 60% on MOT costs under the new regime.UK USED EV SALES HIT Q1 RECORDUK used EV sales hit a record 86,943 units in Q1 2026, up 32% year on year, with around one in 23 used car buyers choosing an EV compared to one in 30 in the same period last year. The surge is being driven by growing used EV supply from strong prior new car sales, lower prices, and improving buyer confidence in battery longevity.

Send us Fan MailWe're joined by Grant Williams this week, a third generation classic Jaguar racer who is a crowd favourite out on track. Starting from pole position in his first race, to winning the championship in the first year, to wowing the fans at Goodwood events going sideways at every opportunity. It's fair to say racing is in his blood. It started with his Grandfather, who with a few friends used to all race on the same license, keeping a bucket of water on the paddock to cool the drum brakes between races! He regularly races BUY 1 which was first bought by his Grandfather from the factory team as it had disc brakes and kept beating him! Grant has also recently bought back his father's Mk2 Jaguar wide body 'lightweight' project which will be powered by 700hp V12 race engine, and features 19” wide rear wheels from an F1 car! Other cars of note include a 3 door Range Rover tow car, and a Mk3 Ford Escort Van that used to tow the Jag behind it. Grant would travel in the car, and his Dad would drive the van - when they got to a hill, Grant fired up the race car and pushed the van along, helping it get to the top!! Jon Summers and co-host Mark Gammie discuss the British Touring Car Championship with a focus on its 1990s peak, while placing it in historical context from early British saloon car racing through eras featuring cars like the Ford Galaxie, Lotus Cortina, Vauxhall “Big Bertha/Baby Bertha,” Capris and Rover SD1s. They recall late-1980s/early-1990s battles between Sierra Cosworths and BMW E30 M3s, the excitement of Murray Walker's commentary, and BTCC's NASCAR-like contact on narrow UK club circuits such as Brands Hatch, Donington, Thruxton, Cadwell Park, Knockhill, and Snetterton. They cover the two-liter, 8,000-rpm formula, heavy manufacturer involvement, memorable moments involving Tarquini, Mansell, and Plato, the influence of the TOCA Touring Car video game, and how rising costs and aero/regulation changes reduced factory participation and spectator interest after 2000. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== 00:00 BTCC Origins and NASCAR Parallel 02:54 Jack Sears and the Ford Galaxie 05:56 Jerry Marshall and Vauxhall Berthas 09:38 Capris vs Rover SD1 + TV Era 13:22 First BTCC Memories Sierras and M3s 14:35 Murray Walker 16:27 Club Circuits Brands to Cadwell, Thruxton, and Goodwood 24:11 Nineties Contact and Iconic Crashes 26:12 F1 Cameos Chaos 27:02 TOCA Game Memories 27:33 BTCC Rules and Money: Why It Beat F1 33:47 Favorite Tracks And Cars 35:15 Renault Laguna Road Car Tales 41:20 Drivers And Skill Gap 43:53 Reg Creep And Decline 46:19 Everyman Cars, Taxi Driver, Wrap Up And Credits! ==================== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: Visit Our Website Become a VIP at: Patreon Online Magazine: Gran Touring Follow us on Social: Instagram Jon Summers is the Motoring Historian. The Afeela 1, priced from $89,900 with deliveries planned for late 2026, has been cancelled alongside a second model targeting 2028, with California reservation holders receiving full refunds.MG TEASES SOLIDCORE BATTERYMG Motor has opened a third European engineering centre in Frankfurt and unveiled SolidCore, a semi-solid-state battery cell using a manganese-based cathode, semi-solid electrolyte shield, and graphite anode — claiming improvements in safety, range, durability and cold-weather performance without providing specific figures. MG claims to be the first automaker to mass-produce a semi-solid-state battery, though the distinction from a similar cell already in China-market MG4s since December 2025 remains unclear; SolidCore is expected in European EVs by end of 2026.EV CAR/VAN CONVERSIONS FROM RENAULT AND VOLVORenault has revealed an electric Twingo van conversion developed for EDF, doubling load capacity from 360 to 797 litres via a removable rear seat, mesh bulkhead, and cargo cage — though the concept remains unlikely to reach UK sale. Volvo UK is already in market with the EX30 Cargo, a fleet-only compact van offering 1,000 litres of capacity, 390kg payload, and a top dual-motor variant producing 423bhp with a 0–62mph time of 3.6 seconds.AUSTRALIAN FUEL SHORTAGES SPREAD WITHOUT SUPPLY LOSSPanic buying — not supply disruption — has left over 500 petrol stations across Australia short of at least one fuel grade, with New South Wales worst affected at 289 sites, including 164 diesel-dry locations pushing diesel prices above $3 per litre. Authorities have not declared a national fuel emergency or introduced rationing, with Victoria's Energy Minister confirming the strain is entirely driven by consumer behaviour rather than any import disruption.VAUXHALL ASTRA FACELIFT STARTS AT £29,995The facelifted Vauxhall Astra starts at £29,995 across mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full EV variants in both hatchback and Sports Tourer estate, with the PHEV's battery growing from 12.4kWh to 17.2kWh for 52 miles of official electric range and a BiK rate of 10% — undercutting the Golf eHybrid by £6,490. The Astra Electric uses a 154bhp motor with 55.4kWh usable battery, 281 miles of quoted range, and 100kW DC charging covering 20–80% in around 30 minutes.UK PLEDGES £1 BILLION FOR FLEET ELECTRIFICATIONThe UK government has committed £1 billion to commercial fleet electrification, with the Zero Emissions Truck and Van scheme covering up to 40% of purchase costs — reaching £81,000 for the heaviest electric trucks and £5,000 for vans, though reduced from a previous maximum of £120,000 for trucks over 26 tonnes. A separate £170 million uplift to the Depot Charging Scheme allows businesses to reclaim up to 70% of depot charging installation costs, capped at £1 million per application.SK SIGNET STARTS TEXAS BUILD OF 400-KW CHARGERSK Signet has begun production of a 400-kW all-in-one DC fast charger at its Texas facility, using silicon carbide electronics to achieve 96.5% conversion efficiency while reducing its physical footprint by up to 54% versus its predecessor. A modular design offers 320–400kW output tiers, supports one to four CCS1/NACS ports delivering a stable 150–250kW per vehicle simultaneously, and features a 32-inch outdoor touchscreen with Plug & Charge, credit card, and RFID payment support.ROLLS-ROYCE OPENS ELECTRIC COACHBUILD PROGRAMMERolls-Royce has launched the Coachbuild Collection, a new electric coachbuilding programme for ultra-high-net-worth clients, with every vehicle fully road-legal and homologated — unlike predecessors Sweptail, Boatail, and Droptail. The first model will be fully electric, with powertrain, design, and interior details expected later in 2026, supported by a Private Office Network across Dubai, Seoul, Shanghai, New York, and Goodwood.FERRARI TUNES LUCE FOR FEEL, NOT FIGURESFerrari says its first fully electric car, the Luce, will prioritise driver feel over headline performance figures, with CEO Benedetto Vigna consulting NASA and medical centres to identify the point at which EV acceleration becomes neurologically disturbing. Ferrari identified five distinct generators of driving thrills and is focusing on issues such as battery placement to address the mismatch between visual and vestibular cues in cornering caused by heavy EV battery packs.XPENG AUSTRALIA DISTRIBUTOR ENTERS ADMINISTRATIONXPeng's sole Australian distributor, Sydney-based TrueEV, has entered external administration after a lender stepped in over unmet financing arrangements, with insolvency specialists now managing and selling close to 200 G6 vehicles across Melbourne, Brisbane, Wollongong, and Fremantle. A simultaneous legal dispute between TrueEV and XPeng has escalated to court action, leaving the brand's planned 2026 Australian expansion — including the X9 and G9 models — in serious doubt with no clarity offered to existing customers.

Alex and Randy sit down to catch up and talk about a notable Success Story, the best roll bar this side of Durango, and an upcoming epic road trip for Alex and his son before a recap of Randy's recent trip to the UK for a special Grand Prixscreening, the NEC Classic Motor Show in Birmingham, and hot laps at Goodwood. The duo move on to Reliant Scimitars; early-'80s badge engineering; reliving family road trips to Texas that may or may not have actually occurred; sage car-buying advice that every one of us has ignored; the day's accidental automotive show-and-tell; perhaps the perfect combination of family heritage and first stick shift; and a brief but telling insight into why BaT is the way BaT is. close out by looking at their recent watchlists and Alex relates a secondhand anecdote that epitomizes Randy's ideal life.Links for things mentioned in this episode:0:59 BaT Auction Success Story: Cross-Country C1 Corvette7:14 Motorsport Magazine12:53 Harry's Garage on YouTube21:01 Triumph Acclaim on Wikipedia39:02 Done Really Right: 1969 Triumph GT639:21 1969 Triumph GT6+ Race Car 5-Speed44:19 Leyland FV4201 Chieftain Main Battle Tank and Stuart M5A1 Tank44:27 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Speedster by Gunther Werks44:35 Porsche 993 911 (Non-Turbo/GT2) model page44:58 31k-Mile 1991 Dodge Stealth R/T Turbo 5-Speed45:00 1992 Volkswagen Corrado SLC VR6 5-Speed45:13 1977 Ferrari 400 GT45:30 27-Years-Owned, 2.0L-Equipped 1966 Porsche 912 Coupe 5-Speed Project45:37 1988 Land Rover Range Rover 40th Anniversary Edition46:07 1988 Audi 5000CS Turbo Quattro Avant 5-Speed46:36 9k-Mile 1989 Chevrolet Corvette Challenge Race Car46:40 63-Years-Family-Owned 1956 Ford Thunderbird46:56 1941 Graham Hollywood Supercharged Model 113Got suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community, One Year Garage episode, or (B)aT the Movies subject? Send us a textGolf is more than just a game – it's about showing up on time, adapting to changing environments, and sometimes finding your best swing when you least expect it. This week's episode begins with "Matt's Apology Tour," a hilarious recounting of tournament email mishaps that left Joe rushing to make his tee time. The unexpected twist? After arriving late and playing without pressure, Joe shot an impressive 81 despite two triple bogeys, revealing how "playing free" might be the secret mental approach many golfers need. The conversation shifts to the troubling transformation of Cascada Golf Course, where water restrictions have dramatically altered its identity. Once defined by beautiful waterfalls (hence the name), the course now features dry creek beds and dying palm trees. This opens a broader discussion about Las Vegas golf courses disappearing at an alarming rate, with each closure making tee times at remaining facilities harder to secure. The hosts emphasize how every golfer shares responsibility as part of the "grounds crew" to preserve what remains.Equipment talk dominates the middle segment, with putters taking center stage. From Garson Grips to the TaylorMade Spider ZT and Goodwood putters, the hosts dive deep into the personal preferences that make putter selection so unique. A moment of comic relief comes when they share photos of a friend's severely beaten Scotty Cameron, described colorfully as a "bean and cheese burrito" due to its worn appearance. The episode rounds out with professional golf discussions, including reflections on the Bandon Amateur tournament, debates about sponsor exemptions for PGA Tour elevated events, and the contrasting competitive approaches of Tiger Woods versus today's stars like Scottie Scheffler. Throughout it all runs a thread of genuine passion for golf and the camaraderie it creates, reminding listeners why this game connects us all.Whether you're a weekend warrior or a daily player, this episode captures the spirit of golf in all its frustrating, hilarious, and occasionally transcendent glory. Tune in every Tuesday at 8:30 PM Pacific for more golf talk that feels like a conversation with your best friends on the course.Special thank goes out to our show sponsor:
