The automotive landscape is rapidly evolving beyond traditional gasoline engines, and navigating the options can be overwhelming. Alex Kwanton from US News joins us to break down their 2025 Best Hybrids and Electric Vehicles awards, revealing which electrified options truly deliver value, performance, and efficiency without compromise.Remember when buying a hybrid meant settling for a tiny, underpowered econobox? Those days are gone. The Toyota Camry—now exclusively offered as a hybrid—leads the pack with an impressive 44-51 mpg while costing thousands less than competitors. It's joined by standouts like the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and Lexus NX Hybrid that blend efficiency with genuine driving pleasure. The electric vehicle conversation takes us from the astonishing 512-mile range of the Lucid Air to the genuine off-road capability of the Rivian R1S. We explore how these premium offerings justify their price tags through groundbreaking technology and luxury experiences. Meanwhile, more accessible options like the distinctively designed Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6 prove that compelling EVs exist at various price points.Perhaps most surprising is our discussion of the F-150 Lightning, which continues to prove that electric trucks can deliver on the promise of traditional pickups while adding benefits like instant torque, quieter operation, and significant energy savings. For those not ready to go fully electric, we examine how plug-in hybrids from Mazda and Volvo offer a compelling middle ground with meaningful electric-only ranges.Whether you're considering your first hybrid, curious about electric vehicles, or simply want to understand where automotive technology is heading, this episode provides invaluable insights into the vehicles leading the charge toward a more efficient future. Jon Summers is the Motoring Historian. He was a company car thrashing technology sales rep that turned into a fairly inept sports bike rider. On his show he gets together with various co-hosts to talk about new and old cars, driving, motorbikes, motor racing, motoring travel. In this episode, Jon provides his insights on the latest vehicles in the 'Best of the Bay' road test series. He discusses and compares three standout cars: the 2025 Toyota Camry XSE, the full-size Range Rover, and the Lucid. The Camry is highlighted for its exceptional combination of performance and value, with characteristics comparable to a Lexus. The Range Rover impresses with its luxurious leather interior and commanding presence, though it is costly. The Lucid, despite being the most technologically advanced car tested and priced at double the Camry, stands out for its futuristic design and performance, making an impression on both Jon and a passerby during the review. John concludes with endorsements for the vehicles based on different consumer preferences. ==================== The Donnas - Take It Off “Camry Gonna Camry” - a bit better than you expect, in every respect: price, performance, look and feel inside and outside Full Fat Range Rover; the double whammy of the look and smell of the leather so memorable.

In this episode of the Out of Spec Podcast, we sit down with the OG Model S team (Dan, Alex, Tom) from the I-90 Surge to recount their epic cross country road trip in a 2012 Tesla Model S 85. Spanning over 63 hours from Seattle to Boston, the team faced unique challenges as they piloted one of the first DC fast charging EVs, a vehicle now over a decade old, against modern electric vehicles like the Porsche Taycan, Lucid Air, and Tesla Model 3. We dive deep into their strategy, exploring how they managed frequent charging stops, optimized efficiency with Tesla's Supercharger network, and coped with the quirks of older EV technology. They reflect on the evolution of Tesla's technology, the surprising endurance of their benchmark vehicle, and memorable moments, including landmarks, team banter, and late-night hallucinations during their sleep-deprived adventure.Shoutout to our sponsors for more information find their links below:- Fort Collins Kia: Visit focokia.com for full details. One state's highway patrol is perhaps the most famous nationwide – and that's California's, a unit that inspired the 1970's cop drama CHiPS.And anyone who's viewed it knows that CHiPS was associated with motorcycles – specifically classic Kawasakis that were common on police forces at the time. Well, today's California Highway Patrol might look a lot different. Carscoops is reporting that the California Highway Patrol is testing an EV – the Lucid Air, to be specific.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.

The Lucid Motors Air sedan joined the fray in the luxury electric car space only a few years ago, and the landscape is constantly changing. While the company gears up to launch a much-needed ‘ute, the Lucid Air still fills an important space for the brand: it exists. Spread across four price tiers, the Lucid Air is fighting against legacy BEV stalwarts from Tesla like the Model S, and the more recent ventures into the space from Audi, Porsche and so many other automakers. This Lucid Air Touring sits below the flagship Sapphire and Grand Touring and boasts 620 hp from its twin-motor layout. The folks at Lucid say that this combination is good enough for zero to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and a 140 mph top speed, all while weighing two and a half tons. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the wheel of the '24 Lucid Air Touring and puts it through its paces. Murphy takes you on a guided tour of the Lucid Air Touring and highlights some of his favorite features while describing what it's like to live with. Later, Murphy takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the Lucid Air, its space in the marketplace, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the '24 Lucid Air Touring special.
In this episode, we talk about the 2025 Hyundai XRT debut, range-testing the indefatigable Lucid Air Grand Touring, range testing the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Tesla "Actually Smart Summon" and, of course, much, much more.
In this Friday episode, we talk about the VW ID. Buzz range and price deets, Ford's EV rollout "realignment," Lucid Air charging curve, Kyle updates us on Lucid Gravity and the Volvo EX90...and more. Tune in and get up to speed!

Electric Vehicle Sales Electric vehicle sales have really not kept up with expectations and I'm concerned for the smaller companies such as Lucid, Fisker and Rivian, which besides Tesla may be the only other exclusive electric vehicle company that may survive. Digging deeper into the numbers for Lucid, since 2021 they've only built 10,495 cars and the most recent quarterly loss per vehicle was $145,824. When the company first went public back in 2021, they had $4.8 billion in cash, but as of the end of 2023 the company is down to cash of $1.4 billion. In 2023 the company burned through $3.4 billion in cash. The only thing that could save this company would be another billion-dollar investment from the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund as they did back in 2018 when they invested $1 billion. I really like the look of the Lucid Air, but do not see how this company will survive. I would speculate that by 2025 this company will be in bankruptcy. The sad part is for people buying the cars today because of the great deals they may be receiving, think ahead a few years about who will be around to service these cars and they may be stuck in your garage with no way to get them serviced. I would encourage people if you're going to buy an electric vehicle, buy it from a well-known brand like Ford or General Motors who will be around for years to come to service that vehicle. History of Hype Investing Are people so smart that they really don't need to look at what happened in history? We have said many times we stay away from the hype investments like Nvidia and cryptocurrencies and back this up with reality. Let's go back and learn from the late 90s about a company called CMGI, which helped fund internet startups. It was claimed to be one of the hottest investments in history and the CEO, David Wetherell, was deemed to be a hero and a genius. Keep in mind this was 24 years ago and when the company hit a $34 billion market cap, it was larger than Alcoa or Texaco. All the financial talk shows could not talk enough about CMGI and why the stock would continue to go up and what a great investment it was. Anyone on the other side who warned about this was considered a fool, or an idiot. They were told they didn't understand enough about the company. In 1999, the stock rose 940% and everybody wanted a piece of it. Starting to sound familiar yet? However, the next year when the curtain came down, the stock fell 96%. That was the end of the story for many investors! PCE No real exciting news from the personal consumption expenditures price index (PCE) as it was right in line with expectations. The headline number showed an annual increase of 2.5%, which matched the forecast. This was however above the January reading of 2.4%. This increase was likely a result of energy prices as they climbed 2.3% in the month. Core PCE, which excludes food and energy also matched expectations with a 2.8% rise compared to last year. This was slightly lower than last month's reading of 2.9% and marked the smallest gain since March 2021. Roth IRA 5-Year Rules There is often confusion around the nuances of the 5-year Roth IRA rules. There are two separate 5-year rules that apply depending on whether a contribution or a conversion is made. In a nutshell, the rule for contributions dictates how long you must wait to access the earnings without taxes or penalties, while the rule for conversions dictates how long you must wait to access the conversion principal. When making a contribution to a Roth IRA, you can always withdraw the contribution principal no matter your age. This is because contributions are made with after-tax funds. To access the earnings, the account must have been funded at least 5 tax years ago, and you must be at least age 59.5. Being age 59.5 alone is not enough to access those earnings. A contribution of any size will start this 5-year clock and after those 5 years it will no longer be relevant. After making a Roth Conversion, there is a separate 5-year rule which states that 5 tax years must pass for each individual conversion or the account holder must reach age 59.5 in order to access the conversion principal. Upon reaching age 59.5 this rule no longer applies. Therefore, if a conversion is made by someone who is 60, they can immediately access the conversion principal, or if someone who is 58 makes a conversion, they can access conversion principal upon reaching age 59.5 without waiting the 5 years. In these cases, the accounts must still be funded for at least 5 years to access any earnings. Since the conversion rule is triggered by the sooner of reaching age 59.5 or 5 years, a 30-year-old could make a conversion and withdraw that conversion principal after 5 years without tax or penalty even though they are not age 59.5. It is common for people to question making a contribution or conversion in fear that money will be locked up for 5 years, but if done correctly there can be ways to access funds without waiting.

For most of his career, Tony Posawatz was a highly successful engineer working in GM's lucrative truck division. That meant big rigs powered by gasoline and diesel engines. Then one day in 2006 GM's top leadership appointed him to lead a breakthrough initiative. "Build us an electric car that will make people forget all about the Toyota Prius," they said. GM had taken a shot at an all-electric vehicle in the 1990s called the EV1. Tony and his team of top notch GM engineers knew that the way to beat the Prius was to go electric. But range anxiety was an issue. So, they got inventive and designed a propulsion system that featured both an electric battery and a gasoline engine. This set-up, in time, would become known as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle or a PHEV. That product, which debuted 11 years ago, served as a bridge to a barrage of pure electrics like the Tesla Model 3, the Hyundai IONIQ, the Mustang Mach E, the Rivians and the Lucids now hitting the market today. How far along have we advanced on the path to electrics. And how much work still remains to be done before we reach electric nirvana?
