Max Chilton talks with Harry Sherrard about his fascinating and varied career in Motorsport. After starting his career in karts aged 10, Max Chilton progressed up the racing ladder through Formula 3 and GP2, reaching Formula One in 2013 with the Marussia team. He achieved the distinction of being the only driver to finish every race of his rookie season. A further season in Formula One followed, then Max moved stateside to drive for Chip Ganassi Racing in the IndyCar series. In the 2017 Indianapolis 500, Max dominated the latter part of the race, leading 47 of the last 72 laps, ultimately finishing fourth. Further IndyCar seasons followed, before a switch to the World Endurance Championship, including the Le Mans 24 Hours. In June 2022, with a performance that anyone who witnessed it will never forget, Max took the electric McMurtry active-downforce car up the Goodwood hillclimb in 39.08 seconds, to set an astonishing new Festival of Speed shoot out record.

Imagine if Formula 1 got rid of most of its rules and regulations — how fast could they go? The freedom to design and build whatever will result in the fastest time is a dream for many in the higher levels of motorsport, but for British hillclimb champion Alex Summers, it's a reality. Use ALEX100 to get $100 OFF HPA's Track Day Package: https://hpcdmy.co/trackdaybThere have been a lot of great families in motorsport over the years — the Earnhardts, the McRaes, the Andrettis — but when it comes to the prestigious world of British hillclimbing, one surname is better recognised than most — the Summers. This week's guest, Alex Summers, comes from legendary hillclimbing stock, with his grandfather, father, and mother all committed participants of the sport at the highest levels. That Alex is a British hillclimb champion and three-time runner-up isn't much of a surprise with that kind of family history. In this episode, we first cover Alex's early days in racing, as well as his schooling and engineering education. Starting out working for McLaren during a university placement, Alex then moved to Aston Martin, where he's been for the last decade. During all that time, he's never stopped racing. This leads us to his current weapon of choice, the ‘P4t'. This absolute rocketship was designed, engineered, and built by Alex himself. It weighs 500kg and runs a 700hp, 16,000rpm Cosworth IndyCar V8, resulting in one of the fastest cars on the generally very short venues that make up the British hillclimb championship season. Unlike many overseas competitions, Britain doesn't have much in the way of elevation, meaning runs generally last well under a minute. This form of very short and sharp racing is described as “drag racing with corners” by Alex, and this, along with very few regulations, makes for some very unique requirements when building a competitive car. We dig deep into the P4t build, asking the big questions about the engine, chassis, and suspension setup.Alex is also known for his involvement with the McMurtry Spéirling development team, and was one of the first drivers to test the insanely fast 1000hp fan car. We find out what a car as fast and unique as the Spéirling and its 2000kg of downforce is actually like to drive and what it takes to get record-setting runs out of it.Follow Alex here:IG: @alex_summers_hillclimbYT: Alex SummersTK: @alex.summers.hillclimbDon't forget, you can use ALEX100 to get $100 OFF HPA's Track Day Package: https://hpcdmy.co/trackdaybTimestamps:3:47 How did you develop an interest in cars?6:27 How much time do you need to spend in a kart to be really good?11:57 Seriousness of the British Hill Climb Championship18:42 What's your formal education?26:39 Opportunities in the UK for high-end motorsport31:29 Australian V8 Supercars and British touring cars34:34 What happened after you finished your degree?40:20 How do you mentally switch on for a hill climb run?47:55 How do you improve at hill climb when track and car time is limited?59:44 What are these hill climb cars based off?1:02:28 Would a British hill climb car be competitive at Pikes Peak?1:05:36 Pros and cons of turbocharging in these cars, different engine combinations1:12:57 How do you set up suspension with your aero package for hill climb?1:18:13 What is a heave spring and how does it work?1:21:05 How and why the carbon monocoque?1:35:10 How did you get involved with the McMurtry team?1:41:08 How do you guess as a driver the level of grip available from

Todd McMurtry was a lawyer, but he had never practiced defamation law before legacy media outlets demonized 16-year-old Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann for the crime of "smirking" while wearing a Make America Great Again hat. Now, McMurtry has published a book about defamation law—a book he recommends as a kind of "car insurance" for cancel culture. "I think that you should treat it like buying car insurance," McMurtry tells "The Daily Signal Podcast" of his new book, "Dismissed: How Media Agendas and Judicial Bias Conspire to Undermine Justice." He warns that most Americans with a traditional values approach to life should expect to face attempts to "cancel" them. He notes that smear campaigns happen to "everybody," from high school students to college athletes to professionals to housewives. "I've dealt with dozens and dozens of these people, and it happens all the time." McMurtry warns that Christians and others who support traditional values face an increasingly hostile culture, from the LGBTQ movement to the movement for "diversity, equity, and inclusion" or DEI. Enjoy the show!

On this episode of the podcast, Amanda Head hosts a powerful discussion with three expert guests on critical issues facing America today.Former Deputy National Security Advisor Victoria Coates addresses the tragic execution of hostages by Hamas, including an American, while criticizing the Biden administration's lackluster support for Israel. The conversation also delves into the alarming rise of pro-Hamas protests on U.S. college campuses and the legal and financial implications for universities involved.Additionally, Michael Chamberlain, Director of Protect the Public's Trust, exposes a concerning effort by the Biden-Harris administration to "Trump-proof" the Justice Department by hiring attorneys through a non-competitive process, raising fears of entrenched political bias. Finally, trial attorney and author Todd McMurtry joins Head to explore media bias and judicial activism, using Sarah Palin's defamation case against the New York Times as a cautionary tale of judicial overreach and the erosion of public trust in the legal system. For more interviews like this, you can tune in to watch Amanda Head's nightly, primetime TV news show titled, “Just The News, No Noise” co-hosted by longtime investigative journalist and Just The News Editor-in-Chief John Solomon. www.JustTheNews.com/TVSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Looks like a miniature Batmobile, sounds like a TIE fighter from Star Wars, goes like the absolute clappers. And we've finally got behind the wheel of the McMurtry Spéirling – the car last seen kicking up dust and shredding hillclimb records at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. But it has been tinkered with and is now available to buy for a cool £984k. The new Spéirling Pure comes with all the goodies Max Chilton deployed at Goodwood. That means a twin-electric-motor setup powered by a 60kWh battery system detonating 745kW of electrons (or a nice, round 1,000bhp) on the rear axle. Together with a “patented downforce on demand system” and a scarcely believable kerbweight of under 1,000kg, this thing is capable of serious numbers. Not just 190mph flat out, but also the fact it'll pull 3G through the corners and be able to lap Silverstone 10 times at proper flat-out pace, then recharge in 20 minutes to do it all over again. And Ollie Marriage has experienced it for himself. So, Rowan Horncastle and Ollie Kew grill him to find out what this Cheat Mode car is really like to drive. Learn more about your ad choices. Jim's big on learning and revealing the real deal, packed with some serious knowledge bombs. They're tackling everything from the tricky stories around Indigenous schools in Canada to the big question marks hanging over free speech because of new laws. Here's the scoop from their chat: - They dig into how Indigenous schools are portrayed in Canada, and let's just say, it's not all adding up, shaking up how we see some major institutions. - The chat gets real about Canada's online harms act. Respect and dignity for everyone, that's the goal. - Understanding where we come from matters big time if we're going to get a handle on today and make tomorrow better. - And yeah, there's some tough stuff on the table too, like how kids are getting the short end of the stick and Indigenous peoples aren't always getting the fair representation they deserve. In this episode, we engage with Pastor Tommy McMurtry to uncover the influences behind his theological journey and discuss his venture into the YouTube space, which has significantly impacted the religious community. The focal point of our conversation is Dispensationalism, a topic Pastor McMurtry has passionately critiqued, especially in his YouTube series "Debunking Dispensationalism." He shares his personal evolution from accepting to challenging this doctrine, highlighting its implications within Evangelical and IFB KJV contexts. We delve into three critical aspects of Dispensationalism: "rightly dividing Scripture", the Church-Israel distinction, and the notion of multiple Gospels, offering insightful counterarguments. Connecting these theological discussions to current geopolitical scenarios, particularly regarding Israel, Pastor McMurtry provides a nuanced view on Christian stances and their impact on global politics and the Gospel's message. The episode concludes with his thoughts on the church's role in politics and governance, inviting listeners to explore more through his online platforms. The Biblical Anarchy Podcast is part of the Christians For Liberty Network, a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute. Yes, it's been a few months since the World Cup, but we committed to telling the stories of the entire first USWNT, so we tracked down one of the two outstanding players. Here she is! Sharon was the first woman to be named U.S. Soccer Player of the Year and according to Michelle Akers, she's the ultimate badass. "You showed up at the game on a motorcycle and picture me, I'm just sitting on the ground, just happy to be there and totally intimidated, but you, Sharon show up on this motorcycle, and you're Joan Jett...In my mind, when you were on that US team, there was no one better." How Sharon got there isn't a traditional story either (not that there even was a path to the USWNT because it didn't exist). Sharon was first introduced to soccer because "Mom wanted me out of the house" once she picked up a habit of doing things with her feet. Sharon had just watched a TV program on a woman born without arms; the woman was sitting on a stool threading a needle with her toes, and given that Sharon always wanted to be prepared, she immediately started learning how to do things with her feet. "Stuff happens to people" and I "wanted to be prepared if I were to lose my arms." To her Mom's chagrin, Sharon started using her feet to open doorknobs and doing all housework. Her Mom soon thereafter decided Sharon's feet would be better used playing soccer. Since playing, Sharon has had jobs ranging from carpenter to travel agent and coach, and she just completed illustrating a brand new children's book: The Other Side Of Nowhere: A Jack and Sabrina Adventure (link to purchase below). When asked why it's important people know the stories of the 1985 USWNT she shares, "you always have to have try and to push the limits because there's always going to be somebody somewhere that's going to try to keep you from doing what you want to do. If you want to, you want a better place in the world, you got to do a little bit more. Aim high and go." Summary No guest today in what is my first episode of the new year. I promise no New Year's resolutions except one: to read and digest as many books as I can during the year. Given my interest in books, I was curious to know what some of my colleagues, friends, and family members will read in 2024. So, I contacted more than 40 of them, asking them for a brief bio, their book of choice, and why that title might find its way to their nightstand. I thought that maybe I'd hear from a few, but that many might be too busy to respond, given the fast-approaching holiday. Their responses poured in: Jesse Kohler is the President and Chair of The Change Campaign and also serves as Executive Director of the Campaign for Trauma-Informed Policy and Practice. Going to read Preventing and Healing Climate Traumas: A Guide to Building Resilience and Hope in Communities by Bob Doppelt. Because the climate crisis is widely traumatizing. Promoting support across our society to work through it together is one of the most critical callings of our time. Paul McNicholls is a lay historian and author. Going to read Victory to Defeat: The British Army 1918–40 by Richard Dannatt and Robert Lyman. Because what happened to the British Army between the First and Second World Wars explains why they were summarily defeated by the Germans and had to be evacuated from the beaches at Dunkirk in 1940. Frank Zaccari is a best-selling author and CEO of Life Altering Events, LLC. Going to read The Passion Test by Janet and Chris Attwood. Because over my long time on the planet, my passion – or what I thought was my passion – has changed many times. Now, in my semi-retirement, this book will help me focus on finding my next passion where I can make a difference. Neil C. Hughes is a freelance technology journalist, podcast host and engineer, and the producer of "Tech Talks Daily" and "Tech Fusion" by Citrix Ready. Going to read Freedom to Think: Protecting a Fundamental Human Right in the Digital Age by Susie Alegr. Because this title will deepen my understanding of the intersection between technology, privacy, and human rights in the digital age. Melissa Hughes, Ph.D. is a neuroscience researcher, speaker, and author of Happy Hour with Einstein and Happier Hour with Einstein: Another Round. Going to read Misbelief by Dan Ariely. Because the human brain is so incredible and so incredibly flawed (and because I read everything that Dan Ariely writes!) And Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam Grant. Because we all have hidden potential begging to be discovered. Valerie Gordon is a former Emmy-winning television producer who brings the Art of Storytelling for Impact and Influence to audiences and corporate leaders. Going to read Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam Grant. Because I found his previous works to be insightful and helpful in my business as well as in meeting my own goals. I recommend it to anyone interested in the human mind and its impact on realizing our potential. Rich Gassen is a print production manager at UW-Madison and also leads a community of practice for supervisors where we explore topics on leadership and staff development. Going to read Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam Grant. Because I have always sought to improve myself and those around me to achieve more through better processes, incorporating efficiencies, and harnessing strengths. I feel that this book will bring me to another level in being able to do that. Sarah Elkins is a StrengthFinder coach and story consultant, keynote speaker, podcast host, and the author of Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will. Going to read Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson. Because I've become especially sensitive to representation over the past few years, and I talk about wanting to support all people. Reading a book by a person of color and understanding her back story is one way to help me do that. Diane Wyzga is a global podcaster, a story expert who helps clients clarify ideas and amplify messaging, and a hiker – who walks the talk. Going to read The Perfection Trap - Embracing the Power of Good Enough by Thomas Curran. Because as I've become aware of our culture's dangerous obsession with perfection, I want to learn to step away from my own focus on it. Bill Whiteside is a retired software salesman who is now writing a book about Winston Churchill and a little-known event from World War II. Going to read Larry McMurtry: A Life by Tracy Daugherty. Because after spending the past five years researching my book with my nose in books about Britain and France in 1940, it's going to be refreshing to read just for fun once again. McMurtry's personality and career as a bookstore owner and a highly regarded author – “Lonesome Dove," “The Last Picture Show” and “Terms of Endearment” – fascinate me. Mark Reid is a maker of traditional handmade Japanese paper and host of the Zen Sammich podcast. Going to read The Moon and Sixpence by W. Somerset Maugham. Because the main character's internal moral challenges and the battle with societal expectations are compelling for me to read about and contemplate. Mark O'Brien is the founder and principal of O'Brien Communications Group, a B2B brand-management and marketing-communications firm, and host of The Anxious Voyage, a syndicated radio show about life's trials and triumphs. Going to read Lyrical and Critical Essays by Albert Camus. Because as a longtime fan of Camus' existential work, I look forward to stretching my thick Irish noggin to let in a tad more light – as I always try to do. Hope Blecher is an educational consultant and the founder of Hope's Compass, www.HopesCompass.org, a non-profit that helps members of the community and visitors to interact with survivors of the Holocaust and children of survivors through arts, music, poetry, prose, and more. Going to (re)read The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exuperty. Because I experience something new each time I read it. And Art Matters: Because Your Imagination Can Change the World by Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell. Because I'm curious about what these authors will say that will help me continue on my own pathway of exploring art. Christine Mason is the Cultivating Resilience podcast co-host, educational psychologist researcher, entrepreneur, and yoga instructor/mindfulness coach. Going to read From Beirut to Jerusalem by Thomas L. Friedman. Because Friedman knows the region exceptionally well, this book will provide me with a greater understanding of the underlying regional and religious tensions and conflicts and also prepare me to lead others in a deeper discussion toward a potential resolution and peace. Tammy Hader is a retired accountant, a lifetime Kansan, a storyteller, a caregiver, and an author. (See above.) Going to read Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam. Because our relationships – our social capital – continue to be degraded in the current environment, so I want to study it, defend against it, and learn how to shift myself and my community into improved connections. Cindy House is the author of Mother Noise, a memoir about her recovery from addiction. She is a regular opener for David Sedaris on his book lecture circuit. She is also my memoir instructor. Going to read Art Monster: Unruly Bodies in Feminist Art by Lauren Elkin. Because the book looks at women artists and their work as a reaction against the patriarchy. In these days of watching the GOP war against women, it seems especially important as a woman in the arts to consider how my work can be a protest against extreme political positions. Susan Rooks – the Grammar Goddess – is an editor/proofreader who helps nonfiction/business content authors of books/blogs/websites and podcasters and their episode transcriptions look and sound as smart as they are. Going to read Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia, MD. Because as I age, I'm interested in doing everything I can to stay alive in a healthy manner. Steve Ehrlich is a lifelong educator and has an equally long-standing calling in fly fishing. He combines those two loves in classes on the lessons of fly fishing and its treasured literature for personal and professional growth, renewal and healing, and social change. Going to read An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us by Ed Yong. Because I've always been intrigued by the interconnectedness of things, especially the things we can't fully understand. Such a mystery is at the heart of this book, which is about how animals are connected to one another in so many ways and in a manner that most of us have difficulty comprehending. Annette Taylor is a rogue researcher of evolutionary psychology. Going to finish We Are Electric by Sally Adee – but doing so scares me... Because it seems like the author is justifying our “merging” with AI or at least romanticizing our ever increasing entanglements with technology. And since I like to simplify life using a cave-dweller perspective, this idea freaks me out. Leon Ikler is a commercial photographer primarily shooting tabletop and small room scenes in the studio along with a mix of location work. Going to read Democracy Awakening by Heather Cox Richardson. Because in these contentious times with the nation so divided, I like how she frames today's issues against what has taken place in the past. I feel it is essential to know our history so we can try to avoid making the same mistakes again. Rita Grant is a former award-winning video producer. Going to reread The United States of Arugula by David Kamp. Because it's a great reminder of how our current American culinary landscape was created. I'm ending with Rita because she also sent in another suggestion. Not a book, but a song – "You Can't Take That Away From Me," sung by the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald. As Rita noted, "The lyrics will stand the test of time. They're a testament to what we hold in our hearts and imagination that can never be taken from us."
YouTube Milestone: Our BEL/RSR YouTube channel is about to hit 900,000 views! You're invited to click on over to help if you'd like to! Bob Enyart, host of Real Science Radio, grew up Roman Catholic and remembers wondering how Jesus could have been three days and nights in the tomb if He died late Friday and was raised early Sunday. Tonight, Friday Dec. 13 at the Rocky Mountain Creation Fellowship at Littleton Baptist Church 1400 W Caley Ave, hear RSR friend Dr. Grady McMurtry, highly qualified to address the matter, answer the question, What day of the week was it when Jesus died? See also Dr. McMurtry's site creationworldview.org and the pages mentioned on today's program: kgov.com/anti-semitism and, to dismiss the superstition associated with today being Friday the 13th, see rsr.org/13. Finally, just fyi, in the after-interview chit chat, Dr. McMurtry and Bob discussed the 360 day year and Grady affirmed his conclusion that yes, when God created the Earth it's original, pre-flood calendar was a complete solar year of 360 days! Today's Resource: Evidence Against the Big Bang When people wonder what evidence exists for the Big Bang, many ask Google. And not surprisingly, when folks search for: evidence against the Big Bang, Google sends most of them on over to Real Science Radio's List of Evidence Against the Big Bang. Yet this is surprising: When NASA urges you to trust the theory because of its confirmed "predictions", folks who Google: big bang predictions, also find RSR's article ranked #1! This video can help prepare you for the coming revolution in cosmology. The nine pieces of evidence presented herein are bringing people out of the failed science of the 1900s and into the 21st century demanding truth regarding both the origin of universe and ultimately, the origin of ourselves. And now, let's leave out the word "predictions" and leave out the word "against". Increasingly, when scientists and others just Google: big bang evidence, the search engine is sending them on over to RSR's evidence AGAINST the Big Bang! So whether you are a creationist or even if you're dug in still defending the old scheme on the origin of the cosmos, you'll want to watch this video to catch up with the latest amazing science on the big bang! Big Bang Video Endorsements - Former NASA Cassini Saturn mission lead ground systems administrator David Coppedge: "Great work on the Big Bang video! It's excellent. You did your homework and the information is presented clearly at the right level for most people. I like how you preemptively close off comeback arguments from materialists." Coppedge is a board member of the group that produced the Privileged Planet video. - Australian physicist, cosmologist, professor, and award-winning co-creator of the world's most precise clock, physicist Dr. John Hartnett: "I recommend that you buy and watch RSR's Big Bang video! I find it to be excellent. During RSR's on-air debate with Lawrence Krauss, this leading big bang proponent said that, 'All evidence overwhelmingly supports the big bang.' So RSR began assembling a list of peer-reviewed evidence against the paradigm which led to this great video!" Evidence Against the Big Bang - Blu-ray, DVD or Video Download

Picture Show is absolutely authentic, due to two behind-the-scenes craftspeople and two actors who transform the film. The story of Picture Show began with the novella of the talented, but at the time, little-known author, Texan Larry McMurtry. McMurtry worked on the screenplay with the director, who had only released one pretty good previous film, after moving on from researching and writing about film --- Peter Bogdanovich. Bogdanovich was brilliant in utilizing the talents of two disparate actors to underline the film --- an old cowboy who'd been in the John Ford film company and never stretched as an actor, Ben Johnson, and an actor who had worked primarily in TV and a few minor film roles such as in the noir Kiss Me Deadly, who would go on to a long career in film and TV, Cloris Leachman. And they were in the supporting cast!email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Book Vs. Movie: The Last Picture ShowThe Larry McMurtry 1966 Novel Vs. the 1971 Peter Bogdanovich Film The Margos put on a Texas-sized episode of Book vs. Movie with The Last Picture Show--both the 1966 novel by Larry McMurtry and the 1971 film by Peter Bogdanovich. Both tell the tale of lonely people living in a forgotten Texas city with barely enough room for their hopes and dreams. McMurtry was a native of Archer City, Texas, born in 1936. When he was young, his family did not own many books and relied on oral storytelling to pass the time. A graduate of both the University of North Texas and Rice University, he would go on to create the town of Thalia as a stand-in for his native land to become the “Thalia: A Texas Trilogy,” which includes Horseman, Pass By (adapted into the 1963 Hud,) Leaving for Cheyenne (adapted into the film Lovin' Molly in 1974) and 1966's The Last Picture Show. He would go on to win a Pulitzer Prize for Lonesome Dove, and his status as a top-notch writer and collector of antique books held throughout his life. The story of Sonny, Duane, Jacy, Ruth, Billy, and more would become a huge part of the film culture. The movie earned over $20 million at the box office on a small production budget and eight nominations for Academy Awards in 1972. It is listed in the United States National Film Registry. At the time of production, the town of Archer City (named Anarene in the film) was scandalized by both the book and the movie. By the time the 1990 sequel Texasville was filmed in the same location and most of the original cast, the town had forgiven them all for the risque material. So between the short story and movie--which did the Margos like better? In this ep, the Margos discuss:The bios of McMurtry & BogdanovichThe differences between the book and moviePeter Bogdanovich on Dick Cavett 1971Karina Longworth's Polly Platt series on You Must Remember ThisThe cast of the 1971 film: Timothy Bottoms (Sonny,) Jeff Bridges (Duane,) Cybill Shepherd (Jacy,) Ben Johnson (Sam the Lion,) Cloris Leachman (Ruth Popper,) Ellen Burstyn (Lois,) Eileen Brennan (Genevieve,) Clu Gulager (Abilene,) Sam Bottoms (Billy,) Randy Quaid (Lester Marlow,) Gary Brockette (Bobby,) Sharon Taggart (Charlene,) and Bill Thurman as Coach Popper.Clips used:“Going to Mexico”The Last Picture Show (1971 trailer)School Fight SongBroken Bottle Fight“Never You Mind”Texasville (1990 Trailer)Music: “Cold, Cold Heart” by Hank WilliamsBook Vs. She talks to Nuala McGovern about how she's learned to cope with the condition in the elite sports world as well as the work she's been doing to support other neurodivergent athletes to fulfil their potential. There's a new book out, The Equal Parent: how sharing the load helps the family thrive. Paul Morgan-Bentley, head of investigations at The Times, explores why it's still so rare in this country for parents to spread or split the responsibility of parenthood, particularly early parenthood, and why it's still expected that women should shoulder this pretty much alone. With him to discuss this and to explore ways the parental load could or should be spread more equally is writer and journalist Nell Frizzell who also has a book out: Holding the Baby: Milk, sweat and tears from the frontline of motherhood. Lexi is an NHS nurse and mum of four, who succeeded in challenging ‘no kids' barriers in the private rental market on the grounds that such bans disproportionately affect women. Going forward, the Property Ombudsman has determined that blanket bans on renting to families are in breach of its Code of Practice. This news comes as the charity Shelter publishes data which shows 1 in 5 parents in England have been unable to rent somewhere they wanted in the last five years because they have children. Lexi tells her story and we hear from the solicitor Jo Underwood. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Lisa Jenkinson Studio Manager: Sue Maillot

If you've been listening to this show or reading the AoM website for awhile, then you likely know what my favorite book of all time is: Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. It's therefore my real pleasure to be able to talk all about that novel today with Steven Frye, professor of American literature and author of Understanding Larry McMurtry. We last had Steve on the show to talk about The Road by Cormac McCarthy. In this episode, we unpack Lonesome Dove, beginning with some background on McMurtry, and the style and themes he explores in his work. From there we turn to Lonesome Dove, and its surprising influences, from Jane Austen to Cervantes. Steve and I explore the characters of Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call, how they can represent the archetypes of the Epicurean and the Stoic, and what we can learn from their friendship. We also talk about the complexities of other characters in the novel, and end our conversation with why Lonesome Dove, despite not having a stereotypically happy ending, is such a life-affirming book.A spoiler alert here: We are going to reveal plenty of plot points in this discussion, so be aware of that if you haven't yet read Lonesome Dove. After the show is over, check out the show notes at aom.is/lonesomedoveResources Related to the PodcastBooks by Steven Frye, including his novel Dogwood CrossingSteve's last appearance on the show: Episode #760 — Cormac McCarthy, The Road, and Carrying the FireLonesome Dove by Larry McMurtryLonesomeDove, the television miniseriesAoM Article: Why Every Man Should Read Jane AustenAoM Article: The Tragic, Liberating Message About Manliness Hidden in American Tall TalesSunday Fireside: Get on Your Horse and KickAoM Article: Gut Check — Are You a Contemptible Person?AoM Article: Books So Good I've Read Them 2X (Or More!)Connect With Steven FryeSteve's WebsiteListen to the Podcast!
