On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson hits the road with three seasoned travelers to explore California's epic road trip experiences. To kick things off, Johnson chats with Zach Dundas, the editorial director behind the Wildsam field guides and Wildsam Magazine, a publication focused solely on road trips. Dundas explains why the open road remains one of the most profound ways to experience California. “You could come up with dozens of different themed road trips just within the state of California, and that's what makes it amazing,” says Dundas. He then dives deep into California's extraordinary range—recommending a route that begins in the artsy neighborhoods of San Francisco and travels east to Yosemite National Park. He also highlights the surreal beauty of Joshua Tree National Park and shares an itinerary that links California's desert, mountains, and forests. Next, Johnson catches up with Scott Clark, the chef and owner of Dad's Luncheonette, a beloved roadside eatery in Half Moon Bay. Clark talks about leaving the fast-paced fine dining world to open Dad's Luncheonette, a cozy spot in a red train caboose along California's coast. “I wanted to make food that felt like home, but that you'd actually want to eat,” he says. Clark also shares highlights from his new cookbook Coastal: 130 Recipes from a California Road Trip, including stories about foraging in Monterey, making frequent stops at oyster shacks, and exploring hidden coastal gems. Finally, Johnson chats with Alessandra Martinez, a digital creator who recently embarked on a four-day theme park road trip with her husband and four kids. Their high-energy itinerary hit Universal Studios Hollywood, Disneyland Resort, and LEGOLAND California. Martinez offers tips for navigating theme parks with kids of all ages and reflects on how to make road trips feel magical for the whole family. “Let everyone pick one thing they're most excited for—and make sure it happens,” she says.

It's no secret our world is in upheaval right now—climate disasters, political unrest, economic uncertainty. But in the midst of it all, there are also stories of resilience, adaptation, and new ways forward. That's a theme Anthony James, host of The Regen Narration Podcast, has explored deeply. From an extended road trip across the U.S., interviewing community leaders navigating climate adaptation, to studying how people respond to upheaval, Anthony has seen firsthand how crisis can be a catalyst for transformation. In this episode, we dive into: Why witnessing and pitching in during disaster—rather than looking away—is essential to change. Lessons from his travels across the U.S., meeting communities in the midst of transformation. A Paradise Built in Hell by Rebecca Solnit, and how joy and transcendence can emerge from catastrophe. Real-world examples of people coming together across political and cultural divides to build something new. What modern society can learn from Indigenous worldviews that see nature as kin and resilience as a collective effort. Do we focus on building centralized movements, or do we nurture local seeds of change and trust in their transformative power? And much more…More about Anthony and The Regen Narration Podcast:The RegenNarration podcast features the stories of a generation that is changing the story, enabling the regeneration of life on this planet. Don't you love coming across something so unexpected and unusual, on a road-trip? That's how most visitors feel when they first clap eyes on the bewitching glory and striking landforms of the Paritea Clay Cliffs. It's one of the most popular geo-sites in the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark, just minutes from Ōmarama, on Henburn Road. It is absolutely worth the 15 minute diversion off the main road to savour this serrated geological wonder, complete with a slot canyon to shimmy through. S3E36 - For the Glory KC is back with the 101st episode of the show. Sporting Kansas City had a busy, but ultimately disappointing, week. To take things in reverse order we start the discussion with For the Glory KC heading into enemy territory to experience CITYPARK as SKC took on St. Louis City SC. We give our thoughts on the stadium, the atmosphere, the food and everything else that happened in the soccer portion of the trip. And we're happy to report the in-person fans were much better than the online ones. And it came up in the conversation, so here is the story I promised about the state of Sporting KC's offseason rebuild and why it may be slower than fans would like. Complete with math (everyone's favorite)! The week started off with the promise of a chance to win a trophy, but that came up short too. Sporting KC headed to Los Angeles to take on LAFC but came up short against the better side. The game was not without controversy as an unconscionably bad call may have tilted things. We talk about that, plus other happenings from the game. Jake Davis and Tim Melia played out of their minds. And Khiry Shelton got some undeserved hate when he shut down Denis Bouanga, one of the best players in the league, all night. The KC Current played to a controversial result of their own. Michelle Cooper was impeded by a referee, who definitely changed directions into her path to gift Gotham their only goal of the game (though KC shouldn't have shut off in the moments after that). Kansas City were the better team, and probably deserved all three points. Missed chances and final passes plagued the team, despite Temwa Chawinga adding to her Golden Boot leading pace. The Current remain in fourth place with four league games to go. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few topics, including: An important transfer fee nugget on Robi Voloder and Logan Ndenbe A quick rundown and breakdown of recent SKC II results The KC Current's team valuation FIFA Club World Cup hosts and ambition from the San Jose Earthquakes? Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Our trip to St. Louis - 1:31 Sporting KC lose a Final - 46:28 The KC Current earn a controversial draw - 1:02:44 Digital Crawl - 1:09:06 Upcoming Schedule: KC Current @ Racing Louisville - Sat. Oct 5th @ 6:30PM CDT Sporting KC vs. LAFC - Sat. Oct. 5th @ 7:30PM SKC II vs. LAFC2 - Sun. Oct. 6th @ 3:00PM We recently turned on "Listener Support." Baconsale is gearing up to go on an epic road trip to the Idaho Potato Museum, but first these best spuds need to create the ultimate driving playlist. Therefore, on this episode, Joel, Kent, and Zack have each brought 10 of their favorite traveling tunes to share with you. Some of our music delightfully fits a theme, some songs are perfect for vibing, and others will make you want to sing along. So buckle up, sit back, and enjoy the terrible snacks, even worse potato puns, regional humor, constant driver switching, wrong turns, and longest short trip ever. Pass the aux (or connect to the Bluetooth) and press play! And if you're the DJ on your next road trip, you can visit Baconsale.com to find our official Spotify playlist for this episode.
