Polo GTI, the first-ever electric vehicle to carry the iconic GTI badge — a near-50-year-first — sitting above the standard ID. Polo with a 223hp front-mounted motor, 0–62mph in 6.8 seconds, and a 263-mile WLTP range from its 52 kWh battery. It goes on sale in Germany from autumn 2026, priced from €39,000, competing with the Alpine A290 and Peugeot E-208 GTi, but will not be sold in North America.BMW AND SOLARWATT PUSH V2H PLANSBMW and SOLARWATT are expanding their partnership to bring Vehicle-to-Home bidirectional charging to BMW's Neue Klasse line-up, starting with the iX3 and i3, following Germany's first commercial Vehicle-to-Grid launch in March 2026. The integrated system will use SOLARWATT's energy management platform, the BMW Wallbox Professional, and both brands' apps to coordinate solar, home storage, dynamic tariffs, and EV charging — launching first across Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands.GM CUTS BOLT COSTS WITH BATCH BUILDSGM is achieving its sub-$30,000 target for the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV in part by assembling cars in batches of 30 identical units at its Fairfax plant in Kansas City, rather than building mixed trims in sequence, reducing errors and line stoppages. The approach, part of GM's "Winning with Simplicity" strategy, also includes keeping clone spare bodies on standby, cutting floor space needs, reducing paint booth colour changes, and locking suppliers to a fixed seven-day delivery schedule.UK INSURERS SHUN MANY CHINESE CARSCarwow research found that half of all insurance quote requests for Chinese vehicles were declined outright by UK insurers, with AXA refusing to quote on all four tested models and Hastings Direct covering only one. Beyond availability, Chinese models averaged £901 per year to insure versus £646 for petrol equivalents — a £255 gap — with insurers citing limited repair data, underdeveloped parts supply chains, and a lack of long-term claims history as key reasons.BMW TIES IONNA DISCOUNT TO US CHARGINGBMW has launched a preferred pricing programme with IONNA, giving BMW and MINI EV drivers a 20% discount on public charging sessions across the network's 1,000-plus US bays, running through 30 September 2026. The discount applies automatically via Plug & Charge or the My BMW App, with no subscription or RFID card required, as part of BMW's broader strategy to build out home, workplace, and public charging infrastructure.EPA DELAYS TIER 4 BY TWO YEARSThe EPA has proposed pushing Biden-era Tier 4 light- and medium-duty vehicle emissions standards back two years, from model year 2027 to 2029, framing the move as a "freedom of choice" measure that the agency says will save automakers and consumers over $1.7 billion. The rollback goes much further than a delay, however — the EPA has also repealed the 2009 Endangerment Finding and all vehicle greenhouse gas regulations, dismantling the legal framework for future federal EV mandates.KIA DEBUTS PV5 SIDE-ENTRY WAV IN EUROPEKia unveiled the PV5 WAV Side Entry at the Motability Scheme Live exhibition in Birmingham on 15 May 2026, claiming a segment first with its side-entry wheelchair access that allows kerb-side boarding — an advantage in dense urban areas where rear access is often blocked. Built for taxi operators, shuttle services, and fleet providers, the van features a reinforced floor, integrated wheelchair anchorage, floor lighting for boarding visibility, and a two-step manual ramp suited to varied road conditions.COULTHARD DRIVES FORMULA E GEN4 AT MONACODavid Coulthard drove Formula E's upcoming GEN4 car on the streets of Monte Carlo, describing the experience as unlike anything in his career — a significant claim from a two-time Monaco Grand Prix winner. The GEN4, set to debut in the 2026/27 season, tops 205mph, weighs under 1,000kg, produces over 800bhp, hits 0–100kph in 1.8 seconds, and delivers a 71% power increase over GEN3 Evo in Attack Mode, with all-wheel drive and a redesigned ergonomic cockpit; it will make its first public show appearance at Goodwood Festival of Speed from 9–12 July.RECYCLING LIFTS OLD BATTERIES INTO BETTER CATHODESResearchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Argonne National Laboratory have developed a recycling process that upcycles spent lithium iron phosphate and lithium manganese oxide cells into higher-performance lithium manganese iron phosphate cathode material, recovering more than 95% of key elements — rivalling or exceeding most commercial operations. Crucially, the process runs at normal temperature and pressure, requires no energy-intensive equipment, fits existing recycling infrastructure, and produces cathode material with higher energy density than the source materials it came from.

Europe led growth with 400,000 sales, up 27% year over year, driven by rising petrol prices and strong gains in Germany, France and Italy, while Chinese-built EVs grew their European market share from 19% in 2025 to 22% in 2026.ELECTRIC GOLF SLIPS TO DECADE'S ENDVolkswagen has pushed the electric Golf back to the end of the decade, later than the previously expected 2028 launch, due to delays with the SSP platform that will underpin it. SSP-based vehicles will now begin with Audi and Porsche from 2028, with Volkswagen following later, as the brand needs greater scale to achieve margin parity on the platform.HOUSE BILL SEEKS PERMANENT BAN ON CHINESE CARSA bipartisan group of Michigan lawmakers has introduced the Connected Vehicle Security Act, which would permanently ban Chinese-developed connected vehicles from US roads. The bill would codify and expand a Biden-era executive order, barring passenger vehicles from China, Russia, North Korea and Iran if they contain software or connectivity systems developed in those countries.JAGUAR NAMES FIRST EV TYPE 01Jaguar has confirmed its first all-electric production car will be called the Type 01, with the "0" representing zero tailpipe emissions and the "1" marking it as the first model of a new era. Ford's near-term focus is improving margins on existing EVs while developing next-generation models on its Universal EV platform and expanding into battery storage through the newly launched Ford Energy.CITROËN PLOTS SUB-€15,000 CITY EVCitroën CEO Xavier Chardon has confirmed plans for a sub-€15,000 A-segment electric city car, positioning it as a modern equivalent of the 2CV to help restore European car buying, which remains three million buyers per year below pre-pandemic levels. A concept is expected at the Paris motor show in October, with a production version to follow within a couple of years at a price well below the current ë-C3.JEEP AVENGER GETS FIRST FACELIFTJeep has given the Avenger its first major update since its 2023 launch, debuting the revised model in Rio de Janeiro with a redesigned seven-slot grille that lights up at night and brings it visually closer to the newer Jeep Compass. A dedicated European launch is planned later in 2026, significant given the Avenger won the 2023 European Car of the Year and has been central to Jeep's European recovery.RIVIAN SIGNALS SECOND R2 SHIFTRivian appears to be quietly staffing a second production shift for the R2 at its Normal, Illinois plant, with a LinkedIn post from a newly promoted R2 Group Leader confirming he is "ramping production on night shift." Volume R2 production began on April 22, with early units going to employees for several months of real-world software data collection ahead of external customer deliveries.MG 07 TO GET MOMENTA R7 SYSTEMSAIC's MG has confirmed the upcoming MG 07 fastback sedan will be among the first vehicles to feature Momenta's R7 autonomous driving system, unveiled at Beijing Auto Show as a direct rival to Tesla's FSD v14. Momenta's R7 supports weekly over-the-air updates, targets a deployed fleet of 200,000 vehicles by end-2026, and plans European robotaxi deployments later this year through a partnership with Uber.UK EV FLEET TOPS TWO MILLIONThe UK's zero-emission vehicle fleet reached 2 million registrations at the end of 2025, representing 4.8% of all licensed vehicles, with 528,000 newly registered in 2025 alone and electric cars taking 23.4% of new car sales. The government's Electric Car Grant, offering up to £3,750 off qualifying EVs, has already been used by over 100,000 buyers and has driven a 10% rise in electric car demand.SWEDEN EV SHARE HITS 64.9% IN Q1Plugin EVs captured 64.9% of Sweden's auto market in Q1 2026, up from 58.0% a year earlier, with BEVs alone reaching 40.7% market share on a 21% volume increase despite the overall market shrinking 2%. A new BEV incentive scheme targeting lower-income rural households helped sustain momentum, while the Volvo EX40 held the top BEV sales spot for the third consecutive quarter.LGES 46-SERIES ORDERS TOP 440 GWHLG Energy Solution secured over 100 GWh of new orders for its 46-series cylindrical cells in Q1 2026, pushing its total backlog above 440 GWh, with the new business widely attributed to a reported ten-year BMW Group contract worth approximately €5.8 billion. The deal is said to cover both 4695 and 46120 cell formats linked to BMW's Neue Klasse platform, and would mark LGES's first time supplying cells for BMW battery-electric vehicles.ROLLS-ROYCE TESTS SECOND ELECTRIC VEHICLESpy photos have revealed Rolls-Royce testing an unnamed electric utility vehicle that closely matches the proportions and silhouette of the Cullinan, the brand's most popular model since its 2018 launch. Reports suggest this is not a next-generation Cullinan replacement but rather a separate new product alongside it.

Comment y arrive-t-on ?

At 4.15 metres long with a 441-litre boot, Android-based Pleos Connect infotainment, and an expected starting price of around £25,000, it will be built in Turkey with no US launch planned.HYUNDAI REVEALS PLEOS OS FOR FUTURE EVSHyundai has unveiled Pleos OS, an Android Automotive-based software platform debuting on the Ioniq 3 before rolling out across future EVs, featuring a large map-based home screen and its own App Market rather than Google Automotive Services. The system adopts a zonal controller architecture to reduce wiring and complexity, while retaining physical controls for volume, temperature, and seat functions to address criticisms of Hyundai's ageing in-car software.EU EV SALES SURGE IN MARCHBattery EV registrations across 14 key EU and EFTA markets jumped 51% year-on-year in March 2026 to over 224,000 units, representing 22% of all new car sales. Q1 2026 saw more than 500,000 new EVs registered across the EU — up 33.5% from Q1 2025 — with Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and Poland all posting year-to-date BEV growth above 40%.U.S. USED EV SALES HIT RECORD IN MARCHAmericans purchased 42,924 used EVs in March 2026, setting a new all-time monthly record and marking a 27.7% year-on-year increase, driven by off-lease vehicles returning to dealerships and elevated petrol prices. This came as new EV sales fell nearly 25% year-on-year to around 83,000 units in the same month.AFEELA SCALES BACK AS SONY AND HONDA RETREATSony Honda Mobility is winding down its Afeela EV joint venture following the March 25 cancellation of its first two models — a sedan and a crossover SUV — with its roughly 400 employees set to return to Sony Corp. and Honda Motor Co. The retreat marks the end of a venture that had positioned Afeela as a software-defined vehicle brand blending Sony's tech expertise with Honda's manufacturing, with the Afeela 1 sedan having been due for delivery later in 2026.UK RAISES EV LUXURY TAX THRESHOLDThe UK has raised the Expensive Car Supplement threshold from £40,000 to £50,000, removing an annual £425 charge that had applied to many electric cars since April 1, 2025. Over the five-year duration of the supplement, this represents a total saving of £2,125 for affected EV buyers.FORD CUTS EXPLORER AND CAPRI PRICESFord has reduced prices on its Explorer and Capri EVs by up to £5,000, with the Explorer now starting at £35,185 and the AWD Premium variant dropping below £50,000. Both models gain a new LFP battery, upgraded motor, and increased Standard Range net capacity from 52 kWh to 58 kWh, adding 43 miles of WLTP range, while the Capri also gets a power boost to 140 kW via Volkswagen Group's new APP350 motor.GERMANY EYES 8 MILLION BEVS BY 2030Germany is targeting 8 million BEVs and 2.4 million PHEVs on its roads by 2030, forecasting annual BEV sales growth of 24% and electric vehicles taking around 70% of total new car sales by the end of the decade. The number of available BEV models is expected to rise 40% between 2026 and 2030, alongside growing adoption of bidirectional V2X charging to support grid stability.EV RANGE NOW OUTRUNS MOST DRIVERSThe SMMT reports average BEV range has reached nearly 300 miles per charge — almost double the 141 miles the average UK motorist covers weekly — meaning the typical driver could go nearly a fortnight without plugging in. Research from Close Brothers Motor Finance found 74% of UK drivers travel fewer than 150 miles weekly, suggesting real-world range anxiety is increasingly at odds with actual driving habits.DUTCH SCRAPPAGE SCHEME SHIFTS TO USED EVSThe Dutch government is launching a scrappage scheme as part of a roughly one-billion-euro package, directing 52 million euros toward buyers of used electric cars who trade in older ICE vehicles of Euro 1–4 emission class. The scrappage premium is expected to be around 3,500 euros per vehicle and is targeted at low- and middle-income buyers, though income thresholds have not yet been confirmed.NISSAN STACKS 23 SOLID-STATE CELL LAYERSNissan has successfully stacked 23 cell layers into a solid-state battery prototype that meets real-world charge and discharge targets, as it works toward launching its first solid-state battery EV by fiscal year 2028. The company is partnering with US-based LiCAP Technologies for mass production using solvent-free Activated Dry Electrode technology, while broader industry momentum builds with Factorial claiming its Solstice platform can deliver up to 450 Wh/kg and over 600 miles of range, potentially reaching production vehicles as early as 2027.

The EV platform frees up more interior space than any previous C-Class, and the car adds a new multi-source heat pump that heats the cabin twice as fast as combustion models while using roughly half the energy, alongside Vegan Society-certified upholstery, electropneumatic lumbar seats with massage and ventilation, an optional Burmester 4D system with seat exciters, and an optional Sky Control roof with 162 illuminated stars.MUSK COMPANIES PROPPED UP CYBERTRUCK Q4SpaceX purchased 1,279 Cybertrucks in Q4 2025, accounting for nearly 20% of all US Cybertruck registrations in the period, with Musk-owned entities including xAI, The Boring Company, and Neuralink collectively taking 1,339 units out of 7,071 total US registrations. Analysts estimated that without these affiliated-company purchases, Cybertruck registrations would have fallen more than 50% year-over-year, and Musk-linked companies continued buying in early 2026 with 158 units in January and 67 in February.MAZDA6E UK PRICED FROM £38,995Mazda will launch the all-electric Mazda6e in the UK this summer with orders open now, priced from £38,995 for the Takumi trim and £39,995 for the Takumi Plus, featuring a 78kWh LFP battery with up to 348 miles of WLTP range and a 10–80% DC fast charge time of just 24 minutes. Unlike mainland European versions, the UK model gets a single-battery setup, paired with a rear-mounted motor doing 0–62mph in 7.9 seconds, a five-door hatchback body, a 14.6-inch touchscreen, and an augmented reality head-up display.BMW ADDS CONTRACT-FREE PLUG & CHARGE IN GERMANYBMW Group has launched a contract-free Plug & Charge service in Germany, allowing drivers of compatible BMW and MINI EVs to authenticate at public DC charging points simply by plugging in, with billing going directly to the credit card stored on their BMW or MINI account. The first rollout covers over 1,400 charging points across Germany and Austria via partner Mer Germany using Hubject's system, and is the first time Plug & Charge has been extended to drivers without an existing charging contract, including tourists and fleet users.BYD ADDS TWO SHARK 6 VARIANTSBYD has expanded its Shark 6 ute range in Australia from one model to three, adding the Shark 6 Dynamic Cab-Chassis (from A$55,900) and the Shark 6 Performance (from A$62,900) alongside the existing Shark 6 Premium. All variants use BYD's Dual Mode Off-Road plug-in hybrid system combining a turbocharged petrol engine with front and rear electric motors and a Blade battery, with the Performance variant boosting towing capacity to 3,500kg and adding a dedicated Crawl Mode for off-road use.ALLEGO ADDS SMART OVERNIGHT CHARGING IN DUTCH MARKETAllego has launched a smart overnight charging scheme in the Netherlands using Deftpower technology, offering drivers a choice from 6 PM between immediate and smart charging, with the latter shifting sessions to off-peak hours to reduce grid strain during evening peaks. Drivers who opt in receive cashback rewards of up to 5% of charging costs, and Allego plans to expand the model from its initial rollout to around 9,000 charging points in the Netherlands before extending it to Belgium.FUEL SPIKE PUSHES DRIVERS TOWARDS EVSA survey by Electrifying.com of over 1,000 visitors found that more than 70% of non-EV drivers said rising fuel prices — spiked by US-Israel air attacks on Iran and disruption to oil supply through the Strait of Hormuz — are making them more actively consider switching to electric. Electrifying.com founder Ginny Buckley reported a near-50% week-on-week surge in site traffic since the start of the US-Iran conflict, while analyst Tom Barnard noted some used EVs priced under £5,000 can pay for themselves within a few years through fuel savings alone.RIVIAN MAKES FOUR RAN SITES NACS-ONLYRivian has converted four California-based Rivian Adventure Network charging sites to NACS-only, removing CCS1 connectors entirely in a first for the network, a move likely driven by the ramp-up of the R2 and the 2026 R1S and R1T, all of which ship with NACS as standard. Owners of older CCS1 Rivians and other non-NACS EVs will need a NACS-to-CCS1 adapter to use these four sites, with the switch also simplifying site logistics as NACS-equipped Rivians grow in number.HONDA SUPER-N SET FOR UK JULY LAUNCHHonda has revealed the Super-N, an all-electric kei-inspired hatchback measuring 3.4 metres in length, due on sale in the UK from July at under £20,000, directly rivalling the Dacia Spring and Hyundai Inster. Power comes from a compact e-axle producing 47 kW (rising to 70 kW in BOOST Mode), with Honda quoting a UK urban range of 199 miles and a combined range of 128 miles, though battery and charging specifications have not yet been disclosed.MAV SYSTEMS LAUNCHES BAYIQ FOR EV BAYSUK-based MAV Systems has launched BayiQ, an ANPR camera system designed to help parking operators, councils, and transport authorities tackle overstaying, ICEing, and poor turnover at EV charging bays. A single BayiQ unit can monitor multiple adjacent bays simultaneously, unlike conventional ANPR systems that require one camera per bay, reducing installation costs and civil works for operators managing busy charging locations.

Ford is simultaneously restructuring, creating a new "Product Creation and Industrialization" organisation under COO Kumar Galhotra that unifies EV, petrol, and hybrid programmes, with the first vehicle on Ford's new Universal EV architecture — a midsize electric pickup — due next year.DACIA READIES SUB-£16,000 ELECTRIC CITY CARDacia has revealed spy shots of a new electric city car priced from under €18,000 (£15,600), designed in just 16 months with help from its China team, featuring a design closer to its SUV range than the related Renault Twingo. Expected to use a 27.5kWh battery with around 160 miles of range, the car will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026, with Dacia also planning three further EVs before 2030.MERCEDES-BENZ LAUNCHES VLE RANGE FROM €82,260Mercedes-Benz has launched the VLE range starting at €82,260, built on an 800-volt architecture capable of charging at up to 300 kW, enabling 355 km of WLTP range to be added in just 15 minutes. The range spans from the entry-level VLE 250 with an LFP battery to the VLE 400 4MATIC with a 305 kW all-wheel-drive system, with seating configurations from five to eight seats and pricing up to €113,000 depending on specification.KIA EV2 FIRST EDITION JOINS UK ECGThe Kia EV2 First Edition now qualifies for the UK government's £1,500 Electric Car Grant, bringing its net on-the-road price to £26,995. The EV2 had its world premiere in January 2026, entered series production in March at Kia's Slovakia plant, and sits as the entry point to Kia's dedicated BEV line-up designed and built in Europe.FREE ELECTRICITY ON GERMAN V2G TARIFFMunich-based The Mobility House plans to launch a V2G electricity tariff in Germany, initially paired with the Renault 5, that could allow EV owners to drive for free by charging when renewable energy is cheap and selling power back to the grid at peak times. A 2024 French pilot with Renault showed that connecting a car for an average of 14 hours per day can reduce charging costs for 10,000 km of driving to effectively zero, with the Mercedes-Benz CLA and GLC also set to join the programme later in 2026.BYD GAINS GROUND IN GERMANYBYD is surging in Germany, with Carwow recording a 135% jump in purchase queries for the brand in Q1 2026, driven by rising fuel prices linked to the Middle East conflict and increasing new car costs making Chinese EVs more attractive. Interest centred on BYD's electric SUVs and the Dolphin hatchback, with Chinese-owned MG also seeing increased demand on the platform.BYD'S JINAN HEADS FOR GERMANYBYD's car carrier Jinan, one of the world's largest at 9,200-vehicle capacity, departed Shanghai on 17 March carrying fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles bound for Germany, arriving around 33 days later. The shipment highlights BYD's continued reliance on Chinese exports while European local production ramps up, with trial assembly underway in Szeged, Hungary since January and series production targeted for Q2 2026.BYD PRICES SEAL 6 PHEVS IN AUSTRALIABYD Australia has confirmed pricing for the Seal 6 Sedan and Seal 6 Touring PHEVs, with the Sedan Essential starting at A$34,990 (around £18,380) — undercutting the Toyota Camry Hybrid — and first deliveries expected around June 2026. Both models use BYD's DM 5.0 plug-in hybrid system with Blade battery technology, offering 55 km electric range on the Sedan and around 100 km on the Touring Premium.POLESTAR AUSTRALIA BOSS ATTACKS PHEVSPolestar Australia's managing director Scott Maynard has publicly called PHEVs "the worst of both worlds," arguing they combine electric drivetrain complexity with petrol engine weight, rarely get charged by owners, and can actually be less efficient than a pure petrol car due to the added battery mass. He also claimed PHEVs are "fast becoming irrelevant" as EV range improves — a notable stance given that Polestar's parent company Geely continues to sell PHEVs across Volvo, Lotus, and Lynk & Co.TESLA ADDS SUNWODA AS FIFTH BATTERY SUPPLIERTesla has signed Sunwoda Electric Vehicle Battery as its fifth battery supplier, with Sunwoda set to provide third-generation LFP cells capable of charging at up to 3C — cutting charge time to around 20 minutes, compared to Tesla's current 2C LFP packs. The cells are destined for export vehicles built at Giga Shanghai, with Tesla buying raw prismatic cells from Sunwoda and assembling the modules and packs in-house.HONDA DROPS E:NY1 FROM UK LINE-UPHonda has removed the e:Ny1 from its UK configurator, leaving it with no fully electric models on sale in Britain after the car sold just 7,122 units in three years, hampered by a high price and limited range requiring heavy dealer discounts. This creates a serious ZEV mandate problem for Honda, which must hit 22% BEV sales this year rising to 80% by 2030, with fines of up to £15,000 per non-compliant vehicle — relief is expected from mid-2026 when a retro-inspired compact EV on the new Super-N platform arrives priced under £20,000.

Key new technologies include steer-by-wire — a first for a German production car — bidirectional charging, silicon oxide-graphite anodes pushing usable battery capacity to 122 kWh, a rear two-speed gearbox, and 385 kW regenerative braking, with a new entry-level EQS 400 starting at around £80,500 in the UK.***NISSAN CONFIRMS ELECTRIC JUKE FOR EUROPE IN 2027Nissan has revealed the third-generation Juke as a fully electric model, built at its Sunderland factory and going on sale exclusively in Europe in 2027, based on the CMF-EV platform shared with the new Nissan Leaf. The EV Juke will run alongside a continuing petrol version due to uncertainty around EV adoption, and is expected to offer up to 622 km (386 miles) of WLTP range with the larger 75.1 kWh battery option, though official specs have not yet been confirmed.***EUROPE EV SALES HIT MARCH RECORDEuropean BEV and plug-in hybrid registrations hit a monthly all-time high of nearly 540,000 units in March 2026, up 37% year-on-year, driven partly by sharp fuel price rises following the disruption of shipping routes at the start of the Iran war in late February. Global EV registrations also rose 3% to over 1.7 million in March, though China bucked the trend with a 14% fall in BEV sales after the end of purchase tax exemptions and trade-in subsidies.***KIA CONFIRMS EV1 FOR 2027Kia has confirmed a 2027 launch for its most affordable EV yet, expected to wear the EV1 badge, targeting the segment occupied by the BYD Dolphin and Renault 5 EV with European pricing expected around €25,000 (~£21,200). Built on the 400V E-GMP platform, it will offer two battery options — 42.2 kWh and 61 kWh — and is also set to replace Kia's last entry-level combustion car, the petrol Picanto.***FRANCE PREPARES THIRD EV SOCIAL LEASING ROUNDFrance will launch its third social EV leasing round in June, maintaining a quota of 50,000 contracts aimed at helping low-income households switch to EVs, with Prime Minister Lecornu citing EV running costs of just €2–3 per 100 km versus around €11 for diesel. The government has also set targets for Renault and Stellantis to produce 400,000 electric cars per year by 2027 and one million by 2030, alongside a new 50,000-contract programme for high-mileage middle-income workers such as carers and nurses.***FRANCE TIES ELECTRIFICATION TO ENERGY SECURITYFrance has become the first country to announce a major national electrification package directly in response to the Strait of Hormuz energy crisis, doubling annual state support from €5.5 billion to €10 billion through 2030 and targeting fossil dependence in both transport and heating. The plan includes banning gas heating in new buildings from late 2026 or 2027, subsidising 50,000 EVs for high-mileage drivers, offering businesses up to €100,000 per electric truck or van, and building 1 million domestically manufactured heat pumps per year by 2030.***US SOLAR SURGE DEEPENS COAL DECLINEThe US Energy Information Administration forecast on 6 April that solar energy generation will rise 17% this summer compared to 2025 levels, with solar projected to grow from 293 billion kWh in 2025 to 415 billion kWh in 2027, while coal generation is expected to fall roughly 10% in the first half of 2026. Over 90% of net new US generating capacity in 2026 is forecast to come from solar, wind, and battery storage, though rising solar shares are already exposing grids to sharper afternoon price swings and driving increased investment in battery storage alongside new capacity.***VOLVO TRUCKS PUSHES ELECTRIC HEAVY HAULAGE FURTHERVolvo Trucks has launched the FH Aero Electric with up to 700 km of range, 460 kW output, MCS charging at 700 kW (20–80% in around 50 minutes), and support for gross combination weights of up to 48 tonnes, directly targeting the range and payload objections that have held back heavy electric freight. Alongside it, updated FH, FM, and FMX Electric models for regional and construction work offer up to 470 km range, a new dual-motor driveline producing up to 540 kW, and an integrated gearbox PTO capable of driving equipment such as concrete mixers and cranes, with market rollout beginning in phases from 2026.

The bigger story is a completely new, more “Volkswagen-like” interior with physical buttons and a unified cockpit philosophy that responds directly to past usability criticism and signals a wider rethink of the brand's EV strategy.VOLKSWAGEN UPDATES ID.4 AND ID.5 IN UKVolkswagen's updated ID.4 and ID.5 in the UK add larger batteries, longer range up to 341 miles WLTP, vehicle-to-load capability, more practical towing and an optional heat pump, all with only small list-price increases. The cars also gain physical steering wheel buttons, improved driver assistance and infotainment tech, and potentially further effective price cuts if Volkswagen regains eligibility for the UK Electric Car Grant.IONNA TO ADD CHARGING AT 350 CIRCLE K SITESIONNA, the automaker-backed charging joint venture, will roll out up to 400 kW fast chargers with both NACS and CCS connectors at more than 350 Circle K locations under the Rechargeries @ Circle K brand. The deal gives IONNA prime highway and commuter-corridor sites, includes taking over and upgrading about 85 existing Circle K charging stations, and supports its goal of 30,000 high-power bays by 2030.BMW BEV DELIVERIES FALL AGAINBMW Group's global BEV deliveries fell 20.1% year on year to 87,458 units in Q1 2026, marking a second consecutive quarterly decline despite strong full-year 2025 volumes. The company blames the loss of US tax credits, the end of Chinese subsidies and a temporary gap in its mid-size electric SUV offering before the new iX3 arrived, even as European orders for that model have surged.RIVIAN TO POWER PLANT WITH USED EV BATTERIESRivian will use more than 100 repurposed EV battery packs, supplied and integrated by Redwood Materials, to create a 10 MWh energy storage system that helps power its Normal, Illinois plant from later in 2026. The project, described as the largest such deployment by a US automaker, reuses packs from test and end-of-life vehicles and reflects the rapid growth of grid-scale lithium-ion storage alongside EVs.OHIO AWARDS $51 MILLION FOR EV CHARGINGOhio has awarded $51 million in federal NEVI funding, matched by at least $26 million in private money, to build 64 new fast-charging sites statewide. Each location will host four chargers at amenity-rich venues such as Sheetz, Tesla sites, Aldi and major travel centers, adding more than 260 new public charge points along key routes.LUCID TIES NEW CEO PAY TO VALUELucid Motors has appointed Silvio Napoli as CEO with a $1.5 million base salary, up to a 200% bonus, a $9.5 million equity grant, performance-based options on up to one million shares and generous relocation and housing support. Interim CEO Marc Winterhoff will stay on until Napoli secures US work authorisation, then return to the COO role with a higher $1 million base salary and increased bonus potential.SCENIC E-TECH GETS FULL UK EV GRANTThe Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric now qualifies for the UK's full £3,750 Electric Car Grant, cutting its starting price to £33,245 and making all three trims more accessible. With a 220 hp motor, 87 kWh battery and WLTP range up to 381 miles, it joins the Renault 4 and 5 E-Tech as models benefiting from maximum support after Renault proved their Polish battery cell plant runs entirely on renewable energy.LIGHTSHIP DOUBLES PLANT, CUTS AE.1 TO ONE MODELElectric trailer startup Lightship is more than doubling its Broomfield, Colorado plant to quadruple AE.1 output by around late 2027 while simplifying the lineup to a single, configurable model. The new AE.1 starts at $157,500 with the previously range-topping 77 kWh battery now standard, reflecting customer demand for the highest-spec pack and replacing the old Cosmos, Atmos and Panos trims with option packages for different use cases.ROLLS-ROYCE REVEALS £7M ELECTRIC NIGHTINGALERolls-Royce's Project Nightingale is a £7 million, Phantom-length, two-seat electric convertible limited to 100 units, designed as both a design manifesto and a major earner for its new Coachbuild Collection tier. Inspired by the historic 17EX Torpedo, it offers a larger battery than the Spectre, targeted range near 329 miles, a likely 650 bhp dual-motor setup, and an immersive co-creation-lite process where buyers join from early sketches through global testing.

¿Has intentado cruzar España en eléctrico recientemente?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 9, 2026 2:38

Home EV charging costs are shielded for now by the energy price cap — fixed at 24.67p per kWh for electricity until end of June — but wholesale price rises could push the cap higher from July, making both home wallbox and public charging more expensive.EUROPEAN FLEETS COULD SAVE €246BN BY 2030A new EY and Eurelectric report finds that fully electrifying Europe's corporate fleets could deliver up to €246 billion in cumulative savings and cut one billion tonnes of CO2 by 2030. However, the authors warn that cheaper running costs alone will not drive mass uptake, calling for coordinated action from manufacturers, policymakers, grid operators and finance providers to tackle high upfront costs, uncertain residual values, and charging infrastructure delays.CUPRA BORN FACELIFT BRINGS SHARP NOSE, SMALL TWEAKSCupra has facelifted the Born with a "shark nose" front end, triangular matrix LED headlights, a continuous rear light strip, and new 235 mm tyres across all five wheel options, while the aerodynamically improved 79 kWh variants now claim around 600 km (373 miles) of WLTP range. A new entry "Born Plus" trim pairs a 58 kWh battery with a 140 kW motor — figures that match Ford's Capri LFP option and strongly suggest a switch to LFP cells from the updated MEB+ platform — though Cupra has not confirmed drivetrain details and appears to be saving that announcement for a related reveal, likely the VW ID.3 facelift later in 2026.FORD EV SALES SINK 71% AFTER LIGHTNING EXITFord's US EV sales collapsed 71% in February 2026 to just 2,122 units, the steepest monthly drop in its EV history, driven by the discontinuation of the F-150 Lightning and the expiry of the federal EV tax credit. Ford's Model e division lost $4.8 billion in 2025 and is forecast to lose another $4–5 billion in 2026, with profitability not expected until 2029; the company has already booked a $19.5 billion writedown and is pivoting to a new ~$30,000 midsize electric pickup it hopes will revive the business by 2027.LUCID PATCHES GRAVITY SOFTWARE AGAINLucid Motors has pushed software update 3.4.4 to the Gravity SUV, targeting AC charging improvements and Drive Assist availability, following a January update that resolved around 95% of earlier software issues — with the car averaging a new update every 24 days since launch. Lucid has closed its online configurator for both the Air and Gravity while it prepares its 2027 model year announcement, and Air owners face a $950 hardware upgrade bill to access the newer UX 3.0 platform already running in the Gravity, due to arrive by autumn 2026.MITSUBISHI READIES LEAF-BASED EV FOR CANADAMitsubishi is preparing its first all-new model since the Eclipse Cross for Canadian dealerships in 2026, built on Nissan's CMF-EV platform and LEAF architecture, with spy shots showing a heavily camouflaged prototype that shares the LEAF's roofline, proportions, and rear hatch panel. Both models will be built side by side at Nissan's Kaminokawa plant in Japan, and Mitsubishi may receive the smaller battery pack to undercut the LEAF on entry price — a strategy that would see Nissan supply the foundations while a cheaper sibling competes for the same buyers.ALPITRONIC UNVEILS HYC400 SERIES 2 CHARGERAlpitronic has launched the HYC400 Series 2, retaining the 400 kW maximum output of its predecessor while upgrading to a 22-inch touchscreen (up from 15.6 inches), second-generation silicon carbide power stacks, and a higher continuous output current of 600 A (up from 500 A). The unit maintains 97.5% charging efficiency but standby power consumption rises significantly from 43 W to under 100 W, and cable options narrow to a single 5-metre length; Alpitronic will sell both generations simultaneously to suit different site requirements.APTERA SHOWS FIRST VALIDATION-LINE VEHICLE PHOTOAptera Motors has published the first photo of a vehicle off its validation assembly line, marking a milestone for its three-wheeled, solar-assisted EV that claims 400 miles of range from a 44 kWh battery and up to 40 miles of daily solar charging, classified as a motorcycle to bypass certain safety regulations. The launch edition price has risen to $40,000 — a $9,300 increase from prior estimates — though a $28,000 model is planned for the future, and with nearly 50,000 pre-orders and a stated daily capacity of 80–100 vehicles, Aptera claims it could fulfil all orders within 500 days of full production, though the end-of-year delivery timeline remains uncertain.GEELY TARGETS DEFENDER WITH GALAXY BATTLESHIPGeely plans to launch the Galaxy Battleship in the UK in 2028, a blocky hybrid 4x4 aimed squarely at the Land Rover Defender and Toyota Land Cruiser, with a production design expected to stay 90–95% true to the Galaxy Cruiser concept shown at the 2025 Shanghai Motor Show. Built on the GEA Evo platform with steer- and brake-by-wire, it may use an AI-driven plug-in hybrid system with a stated output of around 858 bhp, and Geely is promising an interior that surpasses the Defender's for luxury — a bold claim for the Chinese brand's first foray into the 4x4 segment.EU UNVEILS LOCAL-CONTENT RULES FOR CLEAN TECHThe European Commission has unveiled the Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA), tying over €2 trillion in public procurement and subsidies to low-carbon and "Made-in-EU" conditions across sectors including EVs, steel, cement, and wind turbines, with the goal of raising manufacturing's share of EU economic output from 14% to 20% by 2035. China is excluded from the initial trusted-partner list — which includes the UK, Canada, and the US — and foreign investments above €100 million from countries controlling 40%+ of global production would face strict conditions including capped 49% foreign ownership and mandatory technology transfer; BMW and Mercedes oppose the Act over fears of higher costs, while Renault backs it and the text must still clear the European Parliament before becoming law.

Riding on the new MEB+ platform with two battery options, it launches mid‑2026 from around £23,000 to rival the Renault 5 and Peugeot e‑208 in the urban EV segment.  DENMARK HITS 81.6% BEV SHARE IN FEBRUARY  Battery‑electric vehicles made up 81.6% of Denmark's new car sales in February, surging to 94.4% among private buyers. The shift reflects strong government incentives and rapid public adoption as EVs become the mainstream choice in the Danish market.  2026 WORLD CAR AWARDS SHORTLISTS TILT ELECTRIC  Electric models dominate the 2026 World Car Awards shortlist, with the BMW iX3, Nissan Leaf and Mercedes‑Benz CLA leading major categories. Luxury and performance finalists like the Lucid Gravity and Hyundai Ioniq 6 N further show how EVs now span every segment from affordable urban cars to high‑end models.  2027 BMW IX4 SET FOR X4 REPLACEMENT  BMW's 2027 iX4 coupe SUV is testing in Sweden, set to replace the X4 with two all‑wheel‑drive variants and a 108 kWh battery offering up to 800 km WLTP range. It adopts BMW's latest design language and a minimalist cabin similar to the iX3, with a large central screen and refreshed controls.  BARCELONA TO PAY €600 FOR ELECTRIC MOPED SWAPS  Barcelona will grant residents €600 to trade in petrol mopeds for new electric ones starting March 2026, covering up to 40% of the purchase price. With €15 million in funding through 2030, the scheme could replace around 24,000 mopeds and is open on a first‑come, first‑served basis.  ENBW SIGNS MULTI-YEAR XCHARGE DEAL FOR HYPERNET  German utility EnBW has sealed a multi‑year deal with XCharge to supply 400 kW DC fast chargers for its HyperNet network after successful trials. The high‑power C7 units, supporting dual CCS connectors and liquid‑cooled cables, will serve high‑throughput highway and hub charging locations.  STELLANTIS SETS 2026 SPAIN BUILD FOR LEAPMOTOR B10  Stellantis will start producing the Leapmotor B10 electric SUV in Spain in late 2026, marking the brand's European manufacturing debut. The €29,990 model anchors Leapmotor's expansion through Stellantis's joint venture, which now runs over 800 European sales points and continues rapid growth.  THATCHAM TARGETS EV WRITE-OFFS WITH REPAIR BLUEPRINT  Thatcham Research has launched an EV Blueprint to stop repairable electric cars being written off after minor crashes by improving safety, diagnostics and battery repair standards. The plan calls for modular, serviceable battery designs, open diagnostic tools, and replaceable safety components to cut repair costs and extend EV lifespan.

The 2027 lineup also adds a first-ever iX4 coupe-SUV in two variants, an iX3 in three configurations launching in North America this summer, an electric iX5, and an i3 M60 alongside a full electric M3 positioned as the spiritual successor to today's M3 Competition.TESLA BERLIN RUNS HALF FULL AS UNION ROW SIMMERSTesla's Gigafactory Berlin produced 211,235 vehicles in 2024 against a stated annual capacity of 375,000 — a 56% utilisation rate — and output has since declined further, with the factory now reportedly running at around 40% capacity and BYD outselling Tesla in Europe in January 2026. Labour tensions are deepening ahead of works council elections, with IG Metall pursuing collective wage agreements similar to those at Volkswagen and BMW, while Tesla filed a criminal complaint against a union member and Elon Musk warned that "outside organisations" could hinder the site's ambition to become Europe's largest factory complex.T&E: LOCAL BATTERIES COULD CUT COST GAPA Transport & Environment report argues the EU can shrink the cost gap between domestically made and Chinese batteries from 90% to around 30% through scaled-up local production, with higher automation and lower scrap rates potentially cutting the gap to $14 per kWh by 2030 — equivalent to roughly €500 on an average EV. The findings align with the EU's forthcoming Industrial Accelerator Act, which targets ~70% local content thresholds for publicly supported EVs, though some carmakers warn this risks making batteries prohibitively expensive while T&E's Julia Poliscanova calls it "a sovereignty premium worth paying," particularly given China's export restrictions on critical minerals.TRIBUNAL BACKS 5% VAT ON SOME PUBLIC CHARGINGA UK tax tribunal has ruled against HMRC in a case brought by community charging operator Charge My Street, finding that a de-minimis clause in the VAT Act 1994 — capping "domestic" supplies at 1,000 kWh per month per customer — can qualify most neighbourhood charge points for the 5% reduced VAT rate rather than the 20% rate currently applied to public charging. The ruling is significant for drivers without off-street parking, though it also raises commercial complications, as many charge point operators have multi-year contracts priced on 20% VAT, and it opens the door to networks gaming the threshold by splitting sites or charger banks into separate "premises".ŠKODA OPENS €205M CTP BATTERY PLANT IN CZECHIAŠkoda has opened a €205 million (~$216M), 55,000 m² battery production facility at Mladá Boleslav, making it the Volkswagen Group's largest BEV battery system site and the first VW Group plant in Europe to manufacture cell-to-pack (CTP) systems at scale. The line produces over 1,100 battery systems per day — targeting up to 335,000 annually — and Škoda's switch to LFP cells has cut battery production costs by 30% compared to its previous MEB systems.MG CLOSES IN ON EUROPEAN FACTORY PLANMG has narrowed its European factory search to five countries, aiming to begin production by 2027 to circumvent the EU's 45% tariff on Chinese-built BEVs — a levy that caused MG's European BEV sales to fall 33% to 48,479 units last year, even as overall European sales rose 26% to 307,282 units in 2025. MG Europe head William Wang declared "it's time to build local," positioning the brand as a European marque rather than a Chinese import, as rivals BYD, Chery, and Leapmotor also race to establish European manufacturing footholds.CITROËN UPDATES C5 AIRCROSS PHEV FOR EURO 7Citroën has refreshed the C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid with a new 21.5 kWh battery (17.8 kWh usable), delivering up to 96 km (60 miles) of WLTP combined electric range — a 33% improvement over the outgoing model and ahead of rivals like the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 (69 km) and Ford Kuga PHEV (64 km). Priced in the €40–50k range, Citroën positions the updated C5 Aircross as one of the most tax-efficient family SUVs in the mainstream segment across EU markets while still targeting Euro 7 compliance.CANADIAN TRIAL PEGS ELECTRIC SEMI SAVINGS AT $157,126A real-world Canadian trial by FPInnovations' PIT Group and Transport Canada tracked two commercial fleets over 12 months and more than 200,000 km of Montreal-area operations, projecting savings of $157,126 per truck over six years — described as the most comprehensive dataset of its kind outside controlled demonstrations. The study compared the Freightliner eCascadia (BEV) directly against the diesel Cascadia and found that despite the electric truck's higher purchase price, higher-than-expected maintenance costs, and lower residual value, a six-year saving still emerged and may prove conservative.DENZA D9 ELECTRIC MPV ARRIVES IN AUSTRALIADenza has launched the D9 electric MPV in Australia from A$85,990, powered by a 103.3 kWh Blade Battery with 200 kW DC fast charging, 11 kW AC charging, and V2L capability across both variants, all built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 with a cell-to-body battery structure. The seven-seat, three-row cabin targets the premium end of the people-mover segment with nappa leather, open-pore white ash wood trim, a 14-speaker Dynaudio sound system, adaptive suspension, and second-row captain's chairs offering over 900 mm of legroom, massage, and individual screens.CHINESE CAR BRANDS SPLIT US BUYERSA Cox Automotive survey of 802 prospective US car buyers found the country almost evenly divided — 38% would consider Chinese brands if available, 39% would not — with Gen Z showing notably higher openness at 69%. Chinese brands remain locked out of the US market by high tariffs and software regulations, but cost pressure is a key driver of interest, with 68% of open buyers expecting lower prices against an average new car price of $50,000, while BYD has already surpassed Tesla in European EV sales.

The move fits a broader industry trend of unbundling previously standard features, but risks a backlash on perceived value — particularly given the frunk already lost roughly half its original five cubic feet of space when a heat pump was added in 2024.HYUNDAI TARGETS BODY-ON-FRAME PICKUP BY 2028Hyundai is developing a midsize body-on-frame pickup truck targeting a ~2028 launch, with CEO José Muñoz committing to the project at last September's investor day and Australian COO Gavin Donaldson confirming it will be a distinct vehicle from Kia's unibody Tasman — designed to compete with the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. Trademarked "IONIQ T7" branding hints the truck may sit under Hyundai's electric sub-brand, and the same platform could underpin a rugged SUV previewed by the Crater Concept at the 2025 Los Angeles Auto Show.POLESTAR ENERGY ADDS GRID REWARDS IN GERMANY, FRANCEPolestar is expanding its smart charging programme to Germany and France, joining Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK, with German owners on an Intelligent Octopus tariff able to cut home charging costs by up to roughly 50% per session and save around €300 annually by shifting charging to cheap, low-carbon off-peak windows. A key differentiator is that the programme now runs car-controlled charging directly through the Polestar 2 and Polestar 4 via the in-house app, removing the need for a compatible smart wallbox — and Polestar has also activated V2G and V2H capability for the Polestar 3 in California.RIVIAN JOB POSTING POINTS TO 48V PLATFORMA Rivian engineering job listing has surfaced that explicitly names a 48V DC architecture — a first for the company in any public-facing document — calling for someone to design vehicle topologies spanning 12V, 48V and 120/230V AC systems for an active, undisclosed vehicle programme. When read alongside recent postings for steer-by-wire, rear-wheel steering and Level 4 autonomy roles, the listing points toward a next-generation platform that could combine all four technologies; a 48V system is notable because it delivers the same power as 12V at one-quarter the current, enabling lighter, cheaper wiring harnessesVOLVO PLANS 2027 EX30 UPDATE WITH V2LVolvo is planning a 2027 EX30 refresh that adds vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability and a new 148 hp entry-level powertrain via an over-the-air software update requiring no dealer visit, alongside a reworked touchscreen interface. The cheaper motor — pairable with either a 51 kWh or 69 kWh battery for up to 251 miles of WLTP range — could push the UK entry price toward £30,000, narrowing the gap to rivals like the Alfa Romeo Junior and Mini Aceman, though UK availability has not been confirmed.UK EXTENDS HOME CHARGER GRANT TO 2027The UK government has extended its Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant to March 2027 and is raising the maximum contribution from £350 to £500 from 1 April 2026, with the grant covering renters, flat owners and homeowners without driveways — groups previously locked out of cheap home charging. The extension complements a separate £600 million public charging fund, with ChargeUK noting the UK public charging network has reached 88,500 chargepoints, but underscoring that most drivers rely on a blend of home and public infrastructure.MERCEDES BABY G GAINS HYBRID OPTIONMercedes-Benz has reversed its EV-only plan for the smaller "Baby" G-Class, adding a hybrid variant that will use the CLA's turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit from Horse Powertrain producing 188 hp, mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox with an integrated electric motor. Both the battery-electric and hybrid versions will feature four-wheel drive as standard on a bespoke platform, with BEV production pencilled in for 2027 and the hybrid expected to follow — and Mercedes insisting the smaller model will match the full-size G-Class for off-road capability.LEAKED PRICING LIFTS 2026 GEELY EX5 RANGEIndustry guide Redbook has leaked Australian pricing for new Extended Range variants of the 2026 Geely EX5 — AU$41,990 for the Complete and AU$45,990 for the Inspire, each AU$1,000 above current equivalents — though Geely Australia has not officially confirmed figures, specs or an on-sale date. The Extended Range models swap in a larger 68.4 kWh LFP battery (up ~14% from 60.22 kWh), pushing WLTP-rated range to 475 km and 450 km respectively, gains of 45 km over standard versions.MEXICO TIGHTENS AIR RULES AND PUSHES ELECTRIC TRUCKSMexico is combining tightened air quality monitoring under the Ministry of Health with a push to electrify its medium- and heavy-duty fleet, which makes up roughly 25% of the vehicle fleet but generates more than half of all transport-related emissions. Electric truck sales have surged 800% over three years with 25 brands now offering more than 60 commercial EV models in Mexico, while new import rules cap used diesel commercial vehicles at engines no older than 10 years — closing a significant back door for ageing, high-emission trucks.

Weclcome back to EV News Daily, and welcome to our new series where we go deep into one particular EV, called The Spec Sheet. And today it's the turn of the Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology—a vehicle that represents a significant jump forward for Stuttgart's approach to electric mobility. Unlike previous EQ models that carried distinct names and styling, this GLC shares its nameplate with the combustion-powered version while riding on an entirely different platform purpose-built for electric drive.  This marks Mercedes' previously announced departure from the standalone EQ brand identity toward a unified approach where electric and internal combustion variants coexist under familiar model names. Stay tuned to discover: ·       How Mercedes' new MB.EA platform architecture delivers both efficiency and performance ·       The technical innovations behind the GLC's 443-mile WLTP range capability ·       Why this model represents the centerpiece of Mercedes' largest product offensive in company history The GLC holds particular significance as Mercedes-Benz's global best-selling model. By electrifying this cornerstone SUV, the company is making a clear statement about its electric future while maintaining design continuity that existing customers will instantly recognize. And more importantly for a brand which saw pushback from S-Class and E-Class buyers towards the change in direction with the EQS and EQE respectively, Mercedes-Benz will hope this is an easier sell to their fans.

Europe led growth, North America hit a record as buyers rushed to secure tax credits, and China saw robust, if moderating, expansion, while BYD cut its sales target but expects significant overseas volume. FORD'S FOCUS-SIZED RECOVERY PLAN Ford will launch a new mid-sized crossover in 2027, built in Valencia, Spain, reflecting a shift toward affordable EVs following Fiesta and Focus factory closures. The model will compete directly with the likes of Tiguan and Sportage at a mid-£30,000 price point—aiming to recover relevance with lower emissions and competitive pricing without expecting past market share highs. EUROPEAN AUTOMAKERS SEEK 2035 FLEXIBILITY European automotive leaders are calling for flexibility in the EU's 2035 ban on petrol and diesel cars, citing tougher global supply chains and increased reliance on Chinese battery suppliers. Automakers advocate for hybrids and transitional support beyond 2035, while member states like Italy and France push for exceptions, highlighting the division over the full fossil fuel phase-out deadline. TOYOTA BUILDS EV SUVS IN KENTUCKY Toyota will begin producing its first electric vehicles in the U.S. next year, including two three-row SUVs at its Georgetown, Kentucky site, part of a $1.3 billion investment focused on domestic EV growth. The move aims to serve rising American demand, add jobs, and advance Toyota toward carbon neutrality by 2050, while balancing hybrids, plug-ins, and full EVs. STELLANTIS CANCELS ELECTRIC RAM 1500 REV Ram has scrapped its planned all-electric 1500 REV pickup in favor of a plug-in hybrid model, citing weak demand for battery-only trucks and financial constraints at Stellantis. The new Ram REV, featuring a gasoline generator with over 690 miles of range, appeals to users needing greater towing and long-distance capability, while Stellantis refocuses on hybrids and profitable platforms. NISSAN MICRA LIVE EVENT SHOWCASES NEW SUPERMINI EV Nissan unveiled its fully electric sixth-generation MICRA in Rotterdam, built on the dedicated AmpR platform, offering two battery sizes, 198–260 miles WLTP range, and advanced handling and tech features. Starting at £21,495 in the UK with government support, deliveries begin January 2026 as MICRA leads Nissan's European EV lineup expansion. GM REAFFIRMS EV-ONLY FUTURE, SLOWS TRANSITION GM CEO Mary Barra reaffirmed the company's long-term goal of going all-electric by 2035, positioning it as a strategic "North Star". However, she acknowledged that the full transition may take decades due to industry complexity and evolving market and regulatory challenges. AMAZON TESTS GM BRIGHTDROP DELIVERY VANS Amazon has started testing GM's BrightDrop electric vans alongside its existing Rivian fleet, part of its strategy to deploy 100,000 electric delivery vehicles by 2030. The pilot comes as GM faces production slowdowns, offering a chance to boost BrightDrop's visibility and demand while Amazon diversifies its supplier base. VOLVO CEO EXPECTS OTHER BRANDS TO FAIL Volvo recently rehired former CEO Håkan Samuelsson, who affirmed the inevitability of electrification and predicted only a few Chinese brands will dominate globally in the next decade. He expects legacy automakers will struggle, with survival dependent on agility and partnership with advanced firms like Geely, as newcomers like Tesla and BYD reshape the market. CHINA AUTO INDUSTRY THREAT TO GLOBAL MARKET Industry experts at the Detroit Automotive News Congress warned that U.S. automakers are underestimating the competitive threat posed by Chinese brands, whose EV market share in China surged to 50%. Fierce home competition is fueling aggressive export plans, targeting Europe, Mexico, and North America, with cost and technology advantages challenging established automakers. HYUNDAI-LG GEORGIA BATTERY PLANT STARTUP DELAY Hyundai and LG's Georgia battery plant faces a two- to three-month startup delay after a major U.S. immigration raid detained hundreds of workers, most employed by LG suppliers. Hyundai will offset production impact by sourcing batteries from other facilities while both governments negotiate skilled labor solutions for future projects. SCOUT CEO ARGUES FOR DIRECT SALES STRATEGY Scout Motors CEO Scott Keogh stated the company will pursue direct sales, comparing traditional dealer model unfavorably to buying directly from Apple and advocating for a seamless brand experience. He dismissed dealers as a distraction, reinforcing direct-to-consumer as the company's strategic retail approach. MAINE DISTRICTS FACE ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUS SERVICE ISSUES Maine school districts have seen electric buses sidelined due to unresolved service issues, with manufacturer Lion Electric's bankruptcy halting repairs and parts, leaving districts stuck with non-functional vehicles under federal grant terms. The state faces mounting frustration, a federal lawsuit against Lion, and reliance on emergency replacement options while the EPA oversees the troubled program.

NEW CAR REGISTRATIONS AUGUST 2025August registration figures are down on 2024. Typically a quiet month prior to the number plate change in September, it was still a disappointment. In this episode Gary covers a topic of great concern to many new EV drivers: the range of their car. We've been sold EVs with phenomenal ranges by dealers, OEMs, and general advertising. But, in reality, these rarely materialise, with lower-than advertised ranges compounded by a further reduction in winter when the weather is cooler. We look at the WLTP range, what it means and how it's calculated; factors that affect your range; how to calculate what your actual range is; and why efficiency is more important than rangeThis season of the podcast is sponsored by Zapmap, the free to download app that helps EV drivers search, plan, and pay for their charging.Links in the show notes:The Soli lamp - Cool thingAll electric vehicles in Europe - EV DatabaseAre We Too Impatient to Be Intelligent? - by Rory Sutherland - Behavioral Scientist7 Factors That Affect Electric Vehicle Range - Charged FutureAlternative Fuels Data Center: Maps and Data - Fuel Economy at Various Driving Speeds189 - The Efficiency Episode - The EV Musings PodcastEpisode produced by Arran Sheppard at Urban Podcasts: https://www.urbanpodcasts.co.uk(C) 2019-2025 Gary Comerford Support me: Patreon Link: http://www.patreon.com/evmusingsKo-fi Link: http://www.ko-fi.com/evmusings The Books:'So, you've gone electric?' on Amazon : https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07Q5JVF1X'So, you've gone renewable?' on Amazon : https://amzn.to/3LXvIckSocial Media:EVMusings: Twitter https://twitter.com/MusingsEvInstagram: @EVmusingsOctopus Energy referral code (Click this link to get started) https://share.octopus.energy/neat-star-460Upgrade to smarter EV driving with a free week's trial of Zapmap Premium, find out more here https://evmusings.com/zapmap-premium
