Right before recording this podcast, I was in the big-fat-middle of preparing for trial.I wasn't in full "Game On" mode, but the possibility of spending my next three weeks in a courtroom wasn't negligible. And even though I've been doing this for nearly 4 decades, every time I sit down to prep for a case there will come a point where I have to come face to face with my limiting beliefs. That "this trail" could be the one I somehow fumble in a way that could be embarrassing at best and dangerous at worst. - and crazy as it may sound, I'm thankful for these moments. As my guest today learned much earlier than I did, putting ourselves in situations that force us to reconcile who we are with who we want to be is the surest way toward growth.Stephenie Zamora is the founder of Stephenie Zamora Media, a business and marketing firm. She and her team specialize in working with people who are struggling to rise up in the aftermath of loss, trauma, depression, and other big life transitions as they begin building a business around their callings. Life is hard enough without us getting in our own way. And yet so often, that's exactly what we do. In this episode I chat with my first international guest, Stephenie Zamora, about why we do this and how we can stop doing it. Stephenie is an author and coach, business and marketing strategist, and founder of Stephenie Zamora Media—a digital media and production company, publishing house, and a full-service life-purpose development, branding, and online marketing boutique. Stephenie's work helps catalyse individuals on their healing and growth journeys so they can uncover the purpose of their path, step into who they're here to be, and do the work they're here to do.Together we unpack the root causes of self-sabotage and how it can manifest in our lives, core wounds (the negative beliefs that lead us to self-sabotage), and how we can overcome these old internal narratives to go after what we want. Stephenie and her team have just released three new books to help us live our purpose, cultivate more confidence, and make the impossible happen. You can find them and her other products on her website here. And you can check out her other work and adventures on Instagram, Youtube or Twitter.I hope this episode helps you understand yourself better. In it I reach for this quote by Aristotle: "knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom." Self-awareness is a cornerstone of growth, and pretty darn important as an adult. But just as vital is self-compassion. Often we are quicker to be compassionate with our friends and family than ourselves, even if we make the same mistakes. So I hope this episode helps you become kinder towards yourself too. You deserve it. When I was in Middle School, I can remember being in situations that were hard or painful, and understanding that this is only a moment in time and that sometime I am going to be on the other side, so I can focus on, this is ending as it's happening. I feel like I took that with me through a lot of my life. So when it came to people who were cruel or unkind or teased or spread rumors, it's not that it didn't affect me, it certainly did, I was much younger and much less emotionally intelligent. I just had this knowing that this is not all there is. This moment, these people, this school, this neighborhood. I just was always aware this world is so big, even if I didn't quite know where I fit in it yet. I think that really helped me tremendously. I wish I would have had more mindfulness practices for sure around managing my emotions. Your purpose has been hardcoded into you since before you were born. But often, that purpose lies dormant as we try to navigate this world. It gets buried beneath the many layers of obligation and expectation, which is why it feels ever-elusive and impossible for most to pin down. Some people come across their purpose early in life. But for many, it takes a truly challenging chapter to activate us. To crack us so far open that we can no longer live out of alignment with our deepest truth. It's time to thread that storyline and uncover the purpose of the path you're walking, and that's exactly what we'll be diving into in this profound conversation. Today's special guest Stephenie Zamora has been merging the worlds of personal development, digital media, and online marketing to help individuals build purpose-driven lives and businesses for over a decade. She'll be sharing actionable tools and processes to start utilizing this work for yourself so that you can feel clear and confident around what your unique purpose is in the world. Welcome, this week's guest Stephenie Zamora! Stephenie Zamora is a life and business coach, the author of Unravel and Awesome Life Tips®, creator of the five-phase Journey Mapping Process, and host of the Tales from the Journey podcast. Her work merges the worlds of personal development, energy healing, intuitive coaching, writing, and mixed media to help individuals rise up and come back from their most challenging chapters. Stephenie guides her clients through the process of reorienting to themselves, their lives, their relationships, and their work in a way that's fully aligned with who they've become in the aftermath of grief, trauma, depression, and big life transitions such as divorce, job loss, relocation, and more. Links below! Stephenie shares her story of how she was able to discover her path to her purpose and how she's helping others do the same. She talks about some of the stops she's had on her path and we talk about being able to find your path and how it's different for everyone. We also talk a lot about how science has yet to catch up with a lot of the "woo woo" topics that come up frequently in the personal development world; and how the more you learn about anything, the more you understand how it relates to everything. We talk about how 1-star/bad reviews and getting hate mail and how if there's not someone out there who doesn't agree with you, then you're not being 100% authentic in some area of your life. We bring things full circle by going back to purpose and how we all have unique purposes in life. I share my 30th Vision Board success after I was done with Stephenie because I was so engrossed in the conversation that I forgot about it! However, I tie it into what we talked about before. In this season I'm talking with my guests about their story and how they've been able to "rewrite their stars" in their own life. Then after they've shared their story we transition into talking about vision boards for a little bit and I share one of the successes that I've had. Again, why I'm sharing my successes with you is to show that you can do the same thing, to use a vision board yourself and that you can rewrite your stars in your own life. Also, if you want to be a guest on my podcast, then be sure to fill out this questionnaire so that we can see about making that a reality. Because there are so many stories of people rewriting their stars, and I want to share them! https://forms.gle/obKbT739sukbrWWE6 Thanks for listening! Nothing is as maddening as standing in the middle of your own life, feeling as if you're hanging on by your fingernails completely and utterly disoriented by the people and things you worked so hard to cultivate. Feeling entirely uncertain of how to engage in the places and spaces that used to feel like home are experiences we have to face as we make the choice to 'rise up' and 'come back' in the aftermath of challenging chapters and big life transitions. There are three components to this work: reorienting, renegotiation, and releasing, and once you understand them, you can move forward into what's next with far more ease. Stephenie Zamora tells us how we can rise up after the most challenging chapters of our lives. She knows how because she did it. Stephanie recently published her memoir, Unravel: Rising Up and Coming Back from a Season of Living that Damn Near Killed Me. Now if that book title didn’t capture your attention, I’m not sure what will! Stephanie helps catalyze individuals on their healing and growth journeys so they can uncover the purpose of their path, step into who they're here to be, and do the work they're here to do. Also, Stephanie developed a signature Journey Mapping process and program. This program helps individuals reorient to their own life, work, and relationships in the aftermath of life's most challenging chapters and big life transitions. Stephanie reveals that the fall is not the hard part. The hard part is the return, the rise, the comeback. She explains this is because this part of the journey requires a series of simple, yet incredibly difficult choices. Moment to moment, day to day. In addition, Stephanie tells us that life is always shaping us in relation to our purpose—who we are here to be and the work we’re here to do. Furthermore, we must be willing let go of what no longer serves us so that we can start carrying forward only what's truly aligned and become who we're meant to be. Finally, Stephanie shares that we can make the impossible happen if we're willing to untangle ourselves from the winning strategies that have kept us safe, successful, and secure up until this point in our lives. Episode Highlights: First, Stephenie shares her life changing moment. Then, Emily and Stephenie discuss grief. Also, we discuss the growth opportunity offered by that the coronavirus. Next, Stephanie talks about her book Unravel: Rising Up and Coming Back from a Season of Living that Damn Near Killed Me. Then she gives high level over view of what led her to write the book. Also, she explains how that season of her life nearly killed her and how she blamed herself for what happened. Furthermore, she shares her how Post Traumatic Stress Disorder showed up in her life. Then she takes us through her difficult healing process. She shares the therapies she tried and what worked for her. As part of her healing process, Stephenie let herself feel pain until she thought she couldn’t take it anymore. In other words, she shares how she bravely faced her unresolved grief and trauma. Once this happened, Stephenie could start healing and find genuine joy, peace, and love. Stephenie is still navigating her grief and learning how to live with it. Stephenie explains the concept of the void. She explains it as a feeling of nothingness - no feeling no light. Next Stephenie explains that we must pass through the void to access pure joy or purpose Stephenie shares how we can start dealing with our feelings: One: Build trust in intuition and inner knowing and guidance - grief work requires discernment. Two: Begins with feeling feelings - gain insight - sit still become overtaken by your feelings. Three: Find the purpose in your anger. Be with yourself - see what comes up and feel it. After that, Stephenie shares how we can go through the layers and the void. First, feel the emotion emotion and feel it fully. Then, get immersed in the emotion and find your way through it. Next, see what’s beneath it. Finally, keep going and work towards the void. Journaling by hand helped Stephenie heal. Stephanie shares that we have to do the deeper work. In other words, you have to be uncomfortable and none of us want that! In addition, it’s important to be able to call yourself on your own BS. Next Stephanie shares how she developed the Journey Mapping Process from her own experiences. Then Stephanie talks about the second coming of grief and how she realized that the fall isn’t the hard part. In other words, we don’t hit rock bottom and bounce back. The hard part is making the choice to rise up. Next she explains that coming back is a series of tiny choices and tiny moments. She also explains that when grieving, people need space to be heard and to feel it’s ok to say whatever they need to say. Also, when grieving, we repeat our stories because we are processing so much. Stephenie ends her interview with some final words of encouragement. She says you’re exactly where you need to be - you are so much more capable of navigating what you’re going through. Also, we get to decide what meaning we give things that happen to us. Finally, trust yourself. Stephenie Zamora joined us on the OMG show today to talk all about her experience as an entrepreneur! Her business covers a variety of services, all of which revolve around supporting her clients in all areas of starting their business and getting it off the ground. Having been in business for around 10 years, Stephenie shared her experience growing her company, how she started out, and the things she never expected as an entrepreneur. Stephenie began her journey as a graphic designer and based her first company off of these services, before moving on to learn code and begin designing websites for clients. Knowing that she had the passion and skill for design, she decided that she wanted to do more with it and was soon branching out into helping others start their business as well. She also shares that no matter how much you try and plan every little step of your business, you have to be willing to lean into the challenges that life throws at you in order to succeed. When you have a strong vision, it can be hard to understand that surrendering doesn’t mean giving up on your ideas or your plan. It means that the path to get there might change, whether that be a little or a lot. As you are moving towards your goal, you are going to grow and evolve. You’ll begin to learn things that you didn’t know which will change your path, and when this happens the best thing that you can do for your business is to lean in and embrace them as they come. Stephenie also shares that it’s okay to outgrow parts of your business (or even your original business idea as a whole). It’s all about trusting yourself to know what will be best for the business and for yourself. If you want to hear more advice about starting out as an entrepreneur, Stephenie offers a TON of great wisdom and advice in this episode! In today's episode of The Design Business Show, we're flipping the script and I'm being interviewed by my new friend Stephenie Zamora, who we first met on episode 10 of the podcast. My birthday was earlier this month, so we thought it would be fun for her to ask me questions instead of me always asking questions. We didn't plan any of this, so grab your ear buds and get a behind-the scenes update from me. Which, btw, is super uncomfortable for me because I hate attention! So, there's that! Leggo! Here's what we cover: After being inspired by Stephenie's interview about all of my other business ideas Why I'm so focused on managing my energy and being productive in this season of my business How I even started this journey of creating a better world for designers and how it's evolved The areas in my business that need cleaned up and how I plan to do that The type of results that the designers have gotten from working with me How I'm approaching systematizing my business and what projects I'm moving forward on in my business What motivates me to get work done How I measure my own productivity and why I don't try to work super late at night or early in the morning Why I'm focusing on projects that will help move my business forward My vision for the rest of 2019 and where I plan to step up my game What I want to create in 2020 and why I don't really know what it is yet Why I want to spend more time tapping into the things I'm good at Why both me and Stephenie hate visibility and how we handle the resistance to it What visibility looks like for me going forward The program I'm taking to help me create content for my videos What processes I'm working on inside of my business and who I plan to bring on help me make it all happen How I plan to create my next movement The evolution of how I started this movement for empowering designers and the timeline My tips for what not to do if you want to start a podcast Why it's important to tweak things in your business and your offerings based on what's working, and what's not - for you and for your students The pivotal moment that happened to me in April 2017 and why I needed time to process what happened What I'm going to do that will help me move forward on the things I wanna do in my business What it's been like for me to offer other design services Why you should surround yourself with other designers who are on the same journey as you Links Mentioned: Stephenie's Episode Episode 001 where Kira Hug interviews me Trello Brandon Lucero's Video 4X Effect Course (affiliate link) Lori Haller's Episode Like what you heard? The Void is real, but it is not the end. Stephenie Zamora talks all about how we need to walk through our struggles and face our pain, instead of skirting the issue. We are meant to be happy, but sometimes we want to throw positive affirmations in the fire place and watch them burn. Difficulties are a certainty in our life, but Stephenie has found a way to help you through The Call of the Void with her brand new offering called Journey Mapping. She eats ice cream with a fork. She doesn’t use her pinkies for anything, even typing (yes, she knows that’s weird). She would make an excellent getaway driver, and I am honored to call her friend. Enjoy this upfront and honest talk about dealing with our challenges and know that there is hope no matter where you might find yourself in your journey.
Today's Guest I'm excited to introduce today's guest, Shelby Forsythia. We recently met online, and then I was a guest on her podcast, Coming Back. Fun! Fun! Fun! Yes, that is how I would describe my interview with Stephenie. Not only were we kindred spirits and found ourselves speaking more with our hands and facial expressions (wish you could have seen that!), but we just had a blast recording this interview. You will fall in love with Stephenie’s enthusiasm, but you will follow her through hell if she asked you to because like all of us, she has lived through some deep dark trauma that has shaken her to her core and had her building roots to stand the test of life. Listen to it, learn about it, apply the lessons in your own life where necessary. Enjoy the show!
