Book Vs. Movie: 84 Charing Cross RoadThe 1970 Book Vs. the 1987 Film"84, Charing Cross Road" began as a slim epistolary book by American author Helene Hanff, first published in 1970. The book documents a warm, real-life correspondence between Hanff, an avid reader in New York City, and the antiquarian bookshop Marks & Co. staff at 84 Charing Cross Road in London. It was later adapted into a film in 1987, directed by David Hugh Jones and starring Anne Bancroft as Helene Hanff and Anthony Hopkins as Frank Doel, her primary correspondent at the bookshop. A Fire, Share A Story! Living Rooms van Sam Johnson-Schlee In this radical and elegiac essay, Sam Johnson-Schlee invites readers to consider the dreams and fantasies we have about our homes, and their underlying reality. Living Rooms blends history, theory, and memoir as it moves between the colonial trade in house plants, Proustian reminiscence, and razor-sharp critique of rentier capitalism. Johnson-Schlee suggests that, by looking closely at the places where we live, we can confront political realities that extend out into the world. In the way we furnish our homes, might we be unconsciously imagining a different kind of life? In the way we arrange our sofas, picture frames, and our pot plants, are we dreaming of a better world? And what would it mean to reject the notion that a house should be a commodity, and to embrace the idea of a truly living room?

It is wonderful to meet Angela Garry who is an author in her own right and as a biographer of Helene Hanff. The Book Academy members had read 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff and although Helene is not with us any longer were delighted to find Angela had set up a facebook group dedicated to Helene and is in the process of writing her biography. This was the first book to be reviewed by The Book Academy Angela became interested in Helene Hanff's writing when she was university and joined the Cinema Society. One of the films shown was 84, Charing Cross Road which had been released the year before, This was back in 1988, and Angela says, “I loved the film and at the end of the film, I sat and watched the credits as you do, to realise it was based on the book by her Helene Hanff, she's was real person. And I rushed out and bought the book. This book was coupled with the book of the Duchess of Bloomsbury Street in one small volume. The latter is Helene's diary of traveling to London, on the strength of publishing 84. And then I returned to the bookshop another day and found more of her books and just started buying whatever I could of her six books for adults. This was the start of my relationship with this author – as a reader.” Angela went on to write to Helene and then met her in New York.In this podcast Angela reveals more about the visit and her continual interest in Helene Hanff's legacy.  https://www.angelagarry.com/helenehanffScattered Leaves by Angela Garry about the life of Helene Hanff will be published later in 2022. Angela's own books are worth considering too. I would like to quote from her short story collection “Twisted Tales” In it Angela says, “Being a writer isn't something you just do. It's something you are, it comes from within” Later for my birthday in April, my daughter Abbirose and I visited the site of 84 Charing Cross Road (now a MacDonalds) and the plaque is there.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Commonplace Quotes: Our Japanese soldiers who came back from overseas were a pitiful sight. They looked thin, weak, and exhausted. And some of them were invalids, drained of color and borne on stretchers. But among the returning soldiers there was one company of cheerful men. They were always singing, even difficult pieces in several parts and they sang very well. When they disembarked at Yokosuka the people who came to greet them were astonished. Everyone asked if they had received extra rations, since they seemed so happy. These men had had no extra rations, but had practiced choral singing throughout the Burma campaign. Their captain, a young musician fresh from music school, had enthusiastically taught his soldiers how to sing. It was singing that kept up their morale through boredom or hardship and that bound them together in friendship and discipline during the long war years. Without it, they would never have come home in remarkable high spirits. Michio Takeyama  Men are apt to prefer a prosperous error before an afflicted truth. Meredith and Kaytee are chatting this week with a very special guest! She is the person that has been MOST requested as a guest on our show, and she’s here! Anne Bogel, creator of Modern Mrs. Darcy and What Should I Read Next, and general, all-around amazing lady, is chatting with us today and we couldn’t be more excited. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from all three of us: two are very similar in that they involve bookish friendships, and one is a library-related book demerit (a la Gretchen Rubin on the Happier podcast). Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. Two titles from each host, and we are bringing a wide range of books, from romance to thrillers, to interesting writing styles, to weirdo books. It’s all here! We’ve got an update for you on our Slow But Steady reads and what’s been happening in the past week, as well as a fun update from a listener. For our deep dive this week, we are chatting all things Anne Bogel. You’ll hear about the advice she would have given herself before Episode 1 of What Should I Read Next (now that she’s 200+ episodes in), you’ll hear about her new book coming out next year, and a bit of behind the scenes talk about giving book recs on the fly. Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands. And we know you cannot wait to see what Anne chose as her press! We’ve got a novella for every reader who loves books about books, the beginning of a new (old) mystery series, and a summer read that we’ve gushed about in previous episodes. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. Gail, Hazel and host Philippa dig into the subject of garden writing with the journalist and social historian Ursula Buchan and Matt Collins, nature writer and Head Gardener at London’s Garden Museum. The conversation meanders convivially in the usual Slightly Foxed manner, via daredevil plant-hunters, early wild gardening advocates such as Gertrude Jekyll, William Robinson and Vita Sackville-West, and the passing passions and fashions of garden design, with a peek over the hedge at Christopher Lloyd’s Great Dixter along the way.

The show was heard on various networks between 1939 and 1948 (except for the 1941-1942 season, when it was off the air). Most of its sponsors still exist, except for Kolynos toothpaste. Even on radio Marion Shockley (1911-1981) was the first actress to portray Nikki Porter , Ellery's secretary and low-key love interest. In the "Gum-Chewing Millionaire" she's a blonde professional typist who gets asked to work on Ellery's manuscripts. She then applies for the job of personal secretary. On radio, The Adventures of Ellery Queen was heard on all three networks from 1939 to 1948. During the 1970s, syndicated radio fillers, Ellery Queen's Minute Mysteries, began with an announcer saying, "This is Ellery Queen..." and would go on to describe a case in one minute. The radio station would then encourage callers to try to solve the mystery and win a sponsor's prize. Once they got a winner, the solution part of the spot would be played as confirmation. Helene Hanff, best-known for her book 84 Charing Cross Road, was a scripter for the television series version of The Adventures of Ellery Queen (1950-52), which began on the DuMont Television Network but soon moved to ABC. Shortly after the series began, Lee Hart, who played Queen, died and was replaced in the lead role by Lee Bowman. The series returned to DuMont in 1954 with Hugh Marlowe in the title role. George Nader then played Queen in The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen (1958-59), but he was replaced with Lee Philips in the final episodes. Peter Lawford starred in the television movie Ellery Queen: Don't Look Behind You (1971). The 1975 television movie Ellery Queen led into the 1975-76 television series starring Jim Hutton in the title role (with David Wayne as his widowed father). Each episode would end with Queen breaking the fourth wall to go over the facts of the case and invite the audience to solve the mystery on their own. The cousins, under their collective pseudonym, were given the Grand Master Award for achievements in the field of the mystery story by the Mystery Writers of America in 1961. Ellery Queen
