Natural Disasters, Medication & Your HEALTH is the unscripted topic for today. Sometimes, God tells us to do something and as high functioning women, we often tuck it away for another (more convenient) time. (Come on, I'm not the only one!) But my heart has been so heavy these last few weeks with all of the natural disasters and devastation. And it's been heavy for a lot of reasons. So when God nudged me a few times to "hit record and talk", I knew it was for a purpose. HIS purposes are always WAY better than my own. I am learning to not only SURRENDER to the Lord but to also OBEY quicker when I hear Him speaking. Medications people are reliant on have been on my mind as many people fled their homes with only the clothes on their back. And came back to utter destruction. If they could even get back. Can they even get their daily medication they are so reliant on? What happens when there are NO ROADS to get off your mountain to get to a pharmacy? What happens when it takes DAYS for detailed support to come? This is a terrible but important example of WHY your health is so important. GOOD HEALTH. GREAT HEALTH. OPTIMAL HEALTH. We get to decide what kind of health we want because there is always HOPE. We can decide to only take the medication that is absolutely necessary and wean off some of the others while choosing to make better choices in our lifestyle. (It works!) Hear my heart as you listen and I pray this touches you today! “Walking is our common denominator in terms of movement, almost all of us walk. It's a really great place to begin, to teach people about movement.” -Bruce Fertman Our role as bookkeepers gives us unique insight into the health of a business. We can make sense of the figures in a way our clients would struggle to alone. We find the problems and successes and help our clients to make changes to their business that improve profitability and longevity. Yet despite this being a critical function of what we do for others, we don't invest nearly the same amount of time and effort into our own health. We ignore the telltale signs and symptoms in our own bodies in the same way our clients frustrate us by ignoring the areas of challenge in their businesses. Sitting at our desks may feel productive, but we often spend hours sitting, with bad posture trying to generate the same productivity, creativity and insight we could gain from a 12-minute walk. Bruce Fertman, co-author of Walking Well and lifetime movement specialist, is this episode's featured guest. He has spent his life helping others find their path to wellness through movement. In this episode, he speaks powerfully about the need to get the basics right, how small changes can make huge differences, and why you should invest in your health the way you do in your work. If you are feeling run down, exhausted, overwhelmed, or just want even more energy to get things done, then this is the episode for you! During this interview, you'll learn... By Shoshana Grinstein Height—150cm 5ft—Weight at start 88 kilos *size 46. Current weight around 70 kilos *size 36!! Growing up in Montreal, Canada- very active, healthy childhood. Age 11/12- first encounter with weight on the scale, dietitian. Instead of becoming more confident, it made me more self-conscious. I was hard on myself and judgemental. Periods of over-eating Periods of under-eating Un-healthy relationship with my body and food Moved to Israel, gained weight- lost weight- got married- pregnancies. Heavier and heavier between each pregnancy- about 20 kilos overweight Depression- finally leading to real healing Therapy: learning to accept myself, to be kind to myself. Pregnancy #4- healing but corona !! stuck at home. Crazy. Weight Gain and inactivity. While pregnant, parenting coach. So during covid, began listening to podcasts about Parenting. Became vegan and listened to Podcasts about healthy eating, which led to podcasts about mental health. I began to treat myself better, talk to me more kindly, try to motivate me positively, and just get happier. As much as I was learning to love myself the way I was, I couldn't ignore how big I had gotten; a few things triggered my fasting start. My son had said to me: Mom, I've never seen you run! A picture from the summer. And ads constantly popping up on my instagram about it! I finally said- what the hell, let's try. I have nothing to lose… except the weight. I challenged myself; it was 9:00 pm- I could not eat until recess at 10:00. I did it! Stopped eating at 8 pm and went the next day to 10:00… then noon… then I wouldn't eat until I got home from work. OMAD…. Pilates in July (6 months in), and here we are! Within a week, I realized I needed to know more- started listening to Gin Stephens, and bought and read her book. I looked for more interesting podcasts and found The Fasting Highway- bought and read The Fasting Highway! It is so motivating and such an exciting community to be a part of. The initial weight came off fast! I was down 10 kilos in no time. I felt such a new sense of freedom- so in control. I learned to listen to my body and stopped fearing that I might miss out or feel hungry…. “Vigilance without obsession!” Measured but stopped weighing- keep getting rid of clothes- old and new! (Dropped my false sense of confidence and swapped it out for a new one.) Having been raised in a home where no one saw me for who I was/am- no one motivated me or believed in me and now… I'm in a place in my life where I feel such control; I feel worthy, and I feel that I can do and succeed at whatever I want. I want more for myself and my family, and I know now that I can accomplish anything. To get to this point in my life after years of struggling is so liberating The Fasting Highway Our Patreon Supporters Community Please consider joining the Fasting Highway Patreon community. Jules is a 53 years old woman, married, with three beautiful children and living the dream in Western Australia (WA). Her passions, besides her vocation are, yoga, bush walking, going to the beach and reading. Jules is a family therapist for a not-for-profit women's health organisation and dearly loves her work. Previously, she was a registered nurse; she trained and then worked in Victoria and the UK. She lived there for 15 years, and she met her lovely Englishmen. Jules had two of her children in the UK, and they all moved to her hometown in Victoria, where she had her third child in 2007. Then, they moved from Victoria to WA in 2010 due to hubby's work commitments. During Jules's third pregnancy, in 2006, she developed gestational diabetes, which sparked off an intentional health journey. Having gestational diabetes meant she had to test fasting blood sugar levels all the time, just like a type 1 diabetic. And, since 2007 has needed to have fasting BSL's annually and Fasting Glucose Tolerance Test every three years. Also, Jules's grandmother had type 2 diabetes and unfortunately had to have one of her toes amputated and was on daily oral medication. So, with these two factors in Jule's medical and family history, Jules was determined to avoid acquiring type 2 diabetes. Disappointingly, Jules was quite discouraged by GP's saying each year, when she would go in to see them for the blood work results, that she would inevitably get it and there was nothing to be done to prevent it. Then, with a few changes in Jules's health, well-being and significant life events, Jule's blood results started to deteriorate, and she feared the worst. Then, thankfully, in 2018, Julie discovered a tool called Intermittent fasting; at the time, when she was going down the rabbit hole of YouTube lectures about sugar and insulin from Dr Robet Lustig at the University of California and then later came across the book The Diabetes Code, by Dr Jason Fung. This book, The Diabetes Code, changed her life forever, and not to mention saved her life. Before starting IF, Jules BSL's were 6.8 mmol and rising, and now, after six years of IF, they average around 4.8 mmol. Jules has had to tweak her IF regime, flipping back and forth from OMAD to ADF over the six years when optimal blood results have begun to waiver. Jules's primary focus is balancing her hormones, even though she weighs daily. For those that like numbers, Jules is 175 cm tall and before IF weighed 86kg and now maintains between 76-78kg. Has gone from a dress size of 16 to 12. The Fasting Highway Our Patreon Supporters Community Please consider joining the Fasting Highway Patreon community. If you want good moods, you need your health and energy working at optimal levels. But millions of people in our world today are sick, and modern medical advice is not always the best answer. We have “sick” care which perpetuates the problem by adding pills and prescriptions to mask the underlying causes of illness. Cardiologist Dr. Jack Wolfson joins The Good Mood Show this week to share natural strategies aligned with how our ancestors thrived - without pharmaceuticals. Dr. Jack shares insights from his book "The Paleo Cardiologist" on how to achieve optimal health by eating well, living well and thinking well. Listen in to learn natural strategies for feeling your best! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Eat Well - specifically wild seafood for omega-3s Live Well - Get quality sleep, sunshine & physical activity Think Well - Practice self-love and self-acceptance [02:30] Eat Well Our ancient ancestors regularly consumed omega-3 rich seafood as part of their diets, and modern diets often lack these essential fatty acids. While omega-3 supplements can provide benefits, Dr. Jack's preference is to obtain omega-3s through whole food sources like seafood whenever possible. Wild seafood like salmon, sardines and shellfish, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids, are shown to reduce risk of mental health issues, heart disease and more. [11:37] Live Well Quality sleep and exposure to natural sunlight, which aids in vitamin D production, are essential to our health as per Dr. Jack Wolfson, who emphasizes the importance of our bodies' natural circadian rhythms. He encourages outdoor physical activities like walking, hiking, biking, and water sports, reminiscent of our ancestors' high-intensity interval type activity. However, Dr. Jack also warns of indoor toxins such as mold mycotoxins from water damage, which can harm brain and body functions. He underscores the significance of holistic dentistry to avoid toxic materials like mercury fillings, and chiropractic care for overall wellness. [24:01] Think Well Developing self-acceptance, gratitude, spirituality and strong relationships are keys to thinking well. Dr. Jack advises limiting technology and getting outside when feeling down as they naturally improve moods and cognitive function. Notable quotes: [09:50] When we suffer from a heart attack, how do we prevent another one? Well, the answer to prevention is not pharmaceuticals. The answer to prevention is through that lens of eat well, live well, and think well. [10:02] [25:15] When people have spirituality, they tend to be happier people. [25:18] [27:48] Turn off the fear channel. Understand that when you're watching mainstream media, they are there to keep you glued. They're there to keep you fearful. Mark Sisson, although not considered the founder of the Paleo movement, was instrumental in making people aware of its concepts. He has encouraged millions to alter their lifestyles for the better through his research, experience, and his passion for helping others. The lifestyle Mark adopted includes primal eating with exercising in a way that promotes maximum results in minimum amounts of time. Mark champions the philosophy that exercise should be motivated by enjoyment and does not need to be about pain and suffering. He encourages frequent, low-intensity movement combined with periodic, but short, high-intensity workouts. In addition to his many books, Mark created Primal Kitchen that offers health-conscious consumers the best possible choices in condiments, sauces, dressings and healthy snacks. He latest successful endeavor is peluva. The first-ever shoe design to deliver all three crucial criteria: greater comfort, function and style. marksdailyapple.com peluva.com
Say, you've got it good. You're liking your life right now. Do you need to learn the art of letting go of good to get to great? Though it might sound too much like a Jim Collin's book, it's literally what today's guest has done. More than once in her life. And she'd done it in midlife. If you want to reach a new level of influence, power, or success, that you might define as revenue or freedom of time, you may have to stop doing something. Either stop completely, or delegate it to someone else. Listen closely to this episode where one successful book may or may not lead to another. One successful podcast may have to go away to birth a better one. For you… I wish whatever you're dreaming about … or better. Questions We Answer in this Episode: You mentioned starting this new podcast and how it's already out-performed your first and made the comment about having to let go of things. The universe is speaking to me apparently. It falls in alignment with 10x is easier than 2x philosophy where to grow really big and explode you may have to let things that are doing "pretty well" go. What was your reason for starting this new adventure? Are you letting go of something in order to support it? And how does/did that feel? Have you done this before in your life and business? Any advice to listeners who are or who want to be coaches and trainers and aren't right now? What if they just feel pulled to become trainers but have no formal training just such a strong interest, what would you say might tell them this is a fleeting thing vs a real life-loving game-changing pursuit? Dr. Bhanote is a specialist in integrative lifestyle medicine, culinary medicine, and nutrigenomic biohacking. She's one of the few quintuple board-certified physicians in the United States, and she's diagnosed with over one million cancer cases. Tune in to hear Dr. Bhanote's important insights into improving cellular health, strengthening your microbiome, and biohacking the human body for lifelong well-being! “To change your mindset is to surround yourself with other people whose mindset you want to be like. So if you are in an environment with toxic people who are always gossiping or negative, those neural connections are gonna get strengthened in your mind. Okay? But if you're around other people who are like trying to have self-improvement, trying to make changes in your life, you're gonna learn from them. So I think that's an important thing too is to be cautious of who you're surrounding yourself with.” – Dr. Monisha Bhanote What we discuss in this episode: What nutrigenomics is. Dr. Bhanote's extensive experience with cancer. How cells can become “angry” or transform due to lifestyle or environmental factors. The importance of a positive mindset for healing at a cellular level. The power of rituals. How trauma can manifest as a disease, and the importance of processing emotions. Ever since the discovery of DNA scientists have been on a quest to understand the secrets of the human genome. This quest has not only involved analysing the role genes play in making us who we are – the history of genetics has also been shaped by a desire to explore how far our genes can be altered or enhanced. In 2012, the discovery that a molecule known as CRISPR could be programmed to add and remove elements of DNA marked a huge leap forward, transforming research into treatments for diseases as varied as cancer, Alzheimer's, sickle cell and HIV, as well as many rare genetic conditions. In this conversation, recorded at the Francis Crick Institute in London, our panel explores the urgent ethical questions that these advances have unleashed. Chaired by Dr Guddi Singh, the panel featured Tom Whipple, Science Editor at The Times, Shani Dhanda, an award-winning disability activist and inclusion specialist, Dr Güneş Taylor, postdoctoral research scientist at the Francis Crick Institute, and Jimi Olaghere, one of the first people in the world to take part in a life-changing clinical trial using gene therapy to treat sickle cell disease. In this episode (Part II) the panel responds to questions from the audience on the real life implications of gene editing, and the role society should play in regulating the field. If you missed part one of this conversation, please go back and listen now. The event was organised to coincide with a free exhibition at the Francis Crick Institute, London called ‘Cut and Paste,' exploring the future and ethics of gene editing. The exhibition runs until December 2023. Visit https://www.crick.ac.uk/CutandPaste to find out more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
