Adam kicks off the show by reminiscing about his co-starring role in Wreck-It Ralph and the surprising reaction it still gets from fans. He then unveils yet another classic Al Pacino scene, this time with Jay Mohr putting his own spin on the character—proving once again that Pacino impressions never get old. From there, Adam riffs on coaster weight, the gnarly side effects of Niacin, Biden's cancer diagnosis, the sheer brilliance of pit crews, and the fine line between first and last place—not just in racing, but in life. Next, Jay Chandrasekhar joins the show and dives into:The universal boyhood obsession with foot speed (because being the fastest kid on the playground is basically royalty). His journey through comedy as an Indian kid in grade school, dealing with stereotypes and British influence over India. The decision to cast himself in movies and TV shows instead of waiting for Hollywood (considering the only Indian "stars" he saw were Fisher Stevens and Peter Sellers in brownface). The hilariously awkward story of wearing his wife's underpants (sometimes you just gotta improvise). Why comedy films should be communal experiences—because laughing alone just isn't the same.Jay and Adam also break down the realities of directing low-budget movies vs. TV shows, and Jay introduces his new app, VouchVault, which he swears will revolutionize review sites and help him finally get revenge on Rotten Tomatoes. They wrap up their chat by agreeing that seeing Phish live is overrated, and Jay shares his comedic influences: John Landis, Eddie Murphy, and Richard Pryor. Naturally, both Jay and Adam declare Spinal Tap the greatest comedy of all time. Jason "Mayhem" Miller joins the show and kicks off the news with a must-see clip of Adam singing "Big Bottoms" with John Popper. From there, the trio dives into the top stories of the day, including:Joe Biden's cancer diagnosis.NYC's most notorious repeat offender—a guy who's been caught 134 times for stealing and still hasn't stopped. And finally, the mind-blowing possibility of science turning lead into gold.Get it on!FOR MORE WITH JAY CHANDRASEKHAR:INSTAGRAM: @jaychandrasekharTWITTER: @jaychandrasekhaAPP: https://www.vouchvault.com/FOR MORE WITH JASON “MAYHEM” MILLER:INSTAGRAM: @mayhemmillerTWITTER: @mayhemmillerWEBSITE: magnvs.io/pages/summit?via=mayhemThank you for supporting our sponsors:BetOnlineCalderaLab.com/ADAMGo to https://hometitlelock.com/adamcarolla and use promo code ADAM to get a FREE title history report so you can find out if you're already a victim AND 14 days of protection for FREE! While Bill is on a research and writing sabbatical for the next 4 weeks we decided it's important to revisit the horrors we laid out in our Project 2025 podcast series, Trump's Project 2025: Up Close and Personal – and have the series author, pro-democracy advocate and the author of nine books, David Pepper, tie them to what's actually happened so far. In this episode of Trump's Project 2025: Up Close and Personal, we see the real-life effects of this assault on unions and workers. In our fictional story, two legendary high school football players, Turk Foster and DeAndre McCollum, still relish their past glory. But they are struggling to navigate the rule changes proposed by Project 2025 that undercut the power of unions and tilt the playing field in favor of the employers to the detriment of employees. Turk struggles with his job as a union electrician as wages and job security diminish. He feels the weight of expectation on his son, who may soon forgo football to support the family by taking a job, previously off limits to teenagers in a plant in town. DeAndre's wife, a nurse, has had her hours cut and has to cope with last minute schedule changes that disrupt their family life.In the second half of the episode, Bruce Lipton, the fictional private equity executive, plays golf with his HR consultant Dudley Brennan. Their conversation reveals the ruthless cost-cutting measures undertaken by their firm, Bald Eagle Capital, and the broader privatized economy shaped by the election of Donald Trump and the deregulation as proposed in Project 2025. Dudley lists strategies like eliminating union protections, utilizing young workers—including hiring teenagers for hazardous jobs—and reducing overtime expenses. Despite his discomfort with these practices, Bruce feels pressured to comply with the aggressive corporate tactics that prioritize profit over worker safety and rights, reflecting an uncomfortable tension between his upbringing in a union household and the cutthroat world of private equity. The chapter concludes with Bruce's disillusionment leading him to leave the golf course, symbolizing his internal conflict over the ethical implications of his work. We'd like to thank all the artists who volunteered their time to make this episode: Wendell Pierce and Fisher Stevens who read the chapters and others who contributed character voices. While we gear up for Season 5, we hope you enjoy this re-release from July of 2023.  Since we spoke with Fisher, "Beckham" went on to win several Emmys including Best Documentary or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Directing of a Documentary/Nonfiction Program for Fisher.   From the opening moments when David Beckham strolls through a country field wearing a beekeeper's outfit, you know you'll be witnessing another side to one of the world's most famous people.  In “Beckham”, a 4-part series on Netflix, director Fisher Stevens (producer of  “The Cove” and “Tiger King”, and an actor on stage and screen for 40 years, most recently playing Hugo Baker on “Succession”) reveals the life and career of a man whom he says has a unique disposition:  Craving love, but determinedly individualistic.     Fisher speaks with Mike about some of Beckham's most important relationships: his father; his manager, Sir Alex Ferguson; and his wife, Victoria, aka Posh Spice.  They discuss what control means for David, from his father's early invocations of its importance, to Beckham's midnight ramblings through his London home scrubbing surfaces and trimming the wicks of candles.  And they share stories of what it means to be an American fan of soccer… er, um… football.   Our "Anatomy of a Scene:  Beckham"... again, with Fisher Stevens.   Hidden Gems: Burden of Dreams   Follow: @fisherstevens and on Instagram and @fisherstevensbk on twitter @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix

I'm a club kid!", and many, many other tangents that are both related and unrelated to this deeply silly movie. Hack the planet, y'all! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this Episode: In this episode, our heroes discuss the 1986 film "Short Circuit," examining its portrayal of robotics, artificial intelligence, and stereotypes. The charm of the movie, the problematic aspects of Fisher Stevens' portrayal of an Indian character, and the memorable one-liners are explored. Despite the offensive elements, Stevens' effort and the nerdy, idiotic nature of the characters are acknowledged. We also touch on the film's cultural context and its relevance to current advancements in AI. The character of Stephanie, her unusual snack truck business, the impressive special effects and design of the robot Johnny Five, and the comedic and slapstick elements are highlighted. The filming location in Astoria, Oregon, and the nostalgic charm of the movie are also mentioned. Other random topics include the weapons of mass destruction in the movie, Chinese car rip-offs, the actors, and the serving robots. "Short Circuit" is a charming and sweet 80s movie worth watching despite some dated elements. The film follows Johnny Five, a military robot who gains sentience and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Known for its iconic quotes, such as "Hey, laser lips, your mama was a snow blower," and its repetitive yet nostalgic soundtrack, "Short Circuit" is a cult classic that showcases the talent of director John Badham and the charm of the 80s. Takeaways: "Short Circuit" is a charming film with problematic elements. Fisher Stevens put effort into his performance despite the offensive portrayal. The movie's one-liners were hit or miss. The cultural context and relevance to AI advancements are interesting. The special effects and design of Johnny Five were impressive for the time. Filming in Astoria, Oregon, adds nostalgic appeal. The soundtrack enhances the nostalgic feel. A cult classic showcasing John Badham's talent and 80s charm. On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle, John and special guest Laura Hudson (formerly of Wired and The Verge) watched the 1995 cyber-thriller “Hackers,” directed by Ian Softley and starring Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Fisher Stevens and Lorraine Bracco, with supporting roles for Matthew Lillard, Penn Jillette, Wendell Pierce, Marc Anthony and Felicity Huffman.“Hackers” centers on Dade Murphy, alias “Zero Cool,” who made hacking history 7 years before the events of the film when he crashed 1,507 computer systems and was banned from owning or operating computers and touch-tone telephones until his 18th birthday. On his 18th birthday, he finds himself living in New York with his mother and attending a new high school, where he falls into a crowd of teen hacker. There's Ramon, the Phantom Phreak. Emmanuel “Cereal Killer” Goldstein, Paul “Lord Nikon” Cook and Kate “Acid Burn” Libby, Dade's hacking rival and romantic interest. One night, one of the youngest hackers in the group, Joey, breaks into a supercomputer owned by a large energy company. He is noticed and arrested by the US Secret Service, which is working with the company's security officer. Unbeknownst to the Secret Service or anyone else for that matter, the security officer — Eugene “The Plague” Belford — has essentially orchestrated a scheme in which Joey and other hackers are to be blamed for a virus he created, whose purpose is to extort millions from the company into a private account. Thus begins a race: Belford is desperate to get the only evidence of the virus, downloaded by Joey before he was arrested, and our teen hacker heroes are trying to clear their names and get to the bottom of this conspiracy. The tagline for “Hackers” was, of course, “Hack the planet!”You can find “Hackers” to rent or buy on iTunes and Amazon. Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will be breaking down the cult classic cyberpunk film HACKERS (1995) - directed by Ian Softley, written by Rafael Moreu, and starring Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford, Matthew Lillard, and Fisher Stevens.Teenage hackers discover a criminal conspiracy with plans to use a computer virus that will capsize five oil tankers. This is one of my favorite cyberpunk films of the 1990s. It's an acid trip into cyberspace, filled with insane visuals, a killer soundtrack, and unbelievable gender-blind costume design that is currently in fashion now. The film has only gotten better with age as I watched it twice last week and was transported back into time to the mid-90s when roller-blading, skateboarding, phone phreaking, and the Anarchist's Cookbook were the necessary evils of our own teenage wasteland. This film absolutely nails the PUNK in Cyberpunk as it explores the subculture of hacking. It's amazing and it belongs amongst the best in the Cyberpunk Cinema catalog. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. Fisher Stevens and I were recently brought close together by one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Philip Guston, and one of the greatest footballers, David Beckham. Last September he was in The River Cafe with the producers of Beckham, the series he directed for Netflix. We agreed to have breakfast at my house and the next morning he arrived.Walking up the stairs, Fischer stopped at the large pink Guston. It was hard to tear him away as he spoke about the painting and what it meant to him. A half hour turned into more than an hour as we talked about art we looked at, architecture we lived in and food we cooked. We agreed we would continue the conversation on Ruthie's Table 4 when I came to New York.So here we are, this time in Fischer's house, connected through a love of Beckham, food, film, Guston and each other. They then discuss the genesis of the series, how David Beckham himself wanted to do it, and how actor Fisher Stevens came on board as a director. They talk about the structure of the series, Fisher Stevens' directorial style and the fact that Beckham did not have final cut on the show. Finally they give their overall thoughts on the show and David Beckham himself.   Then, since David's wife, Victoria, suffers from PCOS aka Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, the guys then discuss this disorder (30:18). Asif goes over the common symptoms and how it represents hormonal dysregulation in the body, leading to menstrual problems, infertility and a masculine physical appearance. We're braving the summer heat and heading to Camp Blackfoot to talk about one of the greatest slasher movies ever made! After an accident leaves the camp's groundkeeper Cropsy horribly burned, he returns 5 years later with nothing but his garden shears and revenge on his mind! Can our latest group of horror movie teenagers survive the Cropsy maniac, or, will George Costanza, Fisher Stevens, and the rest of our campers be turned into ground meat by him and sent down stream? Don't look, he'll see you! Don't breathe, he'll hear you! Don't move, YOU'RE DEAD!!

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Are you into phreaking for phone sex? Do Rollerblades turn you on? Does the name Captain Midnight mean anything to you? Have you been to Chuck Woolery's Wienerbarn of Science? If so, "Hackers" is the movie for you. This 1995 box-office bust gave us prime Angelina Jolie, Johnny Lee Miller and Matthew Lillard (plus a sub-prime Fisher Stevens) wearing the best cutting-edge fashion the studio could muster. It highlighted blazing-fast 28.8 kbps modems, sweet online handles and some unnecessarily trippy animations. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses Hackers' gratuitous product placement, the movie's incredible two-disc soundtrack, the exploits of the late Kevin Mitnick and the missed opportunity for a "Kids" crossover film.   SUBSCRIBE Android: https://shatpod.com/android Apple: https://shatpod.com/apple All: https://shatpod.com/subscribe CONTACT Email: hosts@shatpod.com Website: https://shatpod.com/movies Leave a Voicemail: Web: https://shatpod.com/voicemail Leave a Voicemail: Call: (914) 719-7428 SUPPORT THE PODCAST Donate or Commission: https://shatpod.com/support Shop Merchandise: https://shatpod.com/shop Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

I can't recommend it enough.A comic hero or heroine also goes on a journey, but for the comic hero, it's often quite, quite different. The hero decides to go on the adventure; the comic hero often has no choice. The hero has a wise old man; the comic hero often meets an idiot who inadvertently says something that can teach him a thing or two. Steve Kaplan will show you the diverse paths that comedy takes in The Comic Hero's Journey. This interview is EPIC!
