The UF/IFAS Extension County Office is pleased to announce that planting a fall garden in September will kick off our new “Plantings of the Month” series. The new series replaces the previous “Plant of the Month” and will include timely topics for your gardens. As the summer heat begins to wane, Northeast Florida gardeners have a unique opportunity to start their fall gardens. The cooler temperatures and reduced humidity create ideal conditions for growing a variety of cool-season crops, such as lettuce, onions, mustard greens and strawberries. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a beginner, you can take full advantage of our unique growing conditions and enjoy a bountiful fall and winter harvest. Check the Plantings of the Month website for information on planting, harvesting and more. Listen to the Extension Cord Podcast to get further insights on the Plantings of the Month. "Starting a fall garden cultivates more than just plants; it nurtures resilience, foresight, and the promise of a fruitful harvest well into the cooler months," said County Commission Chair Mary Alford. The Plantings of the Month program is a collaborative effort between Alachua County Board of County Commissioners, UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County, Alachua County Master Gardener volunteers, Alachua County Public Library, Grow Hub and Working Food.  For more information, contact the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County at 352-955-2402. It's time to start planning and preparing for the Fall/Winter garden so that we can order bulbs and seeds. In this episode, we're digging into garden prep with crop rotation and soil amending, herbs, veggies, flower bulbs, and garlic. Bailey covers overwintering and gives a few lists of what to think about growing this upcoming fall gardening season in each category of flowers, herbs, and veggies. Mentioned in this episode are two great gardeners who have mastered the flower bulb lasagne method: Arthur Parkinson and Claus Dalby. Bailey buys her garlic from Territorial Seed Co and has a blog about growing garlic here. For all the plant lists and more in-depth show notes, visit www.baileyvantassel.com
