BOO! This is part 2 of an episode we did last year at Halloween (Part 1 is Episode 24). If you haven't heard of Haunted OC, you're missing out on the spook! Ernie Alonzo and Charles Spratley have been doing haunted ghost tours of Orange County cities for over 10 years! They conduct their tours year-round, rain or shine (and Kelly has done a tour in both rain AND shine!) They started their tours in Old Towne Orange when Ernie began his research on the antique shops around the Plaza and the eerie stories that would happen in them. Ernie shares that the Antique Depot consistently had the best spooky stories - which sparked the beginning of the tours. Charles started his own ghost tour company in San Diego as a passion project but moved to Orange County for a life change. He started working for Disneyland and one day, when he was talking to a park guest named Joe, he told him his interest in ghost tours. Joe ended up saying, “You need to meet my cousin Ernie!” and the rest is history. Ernie and Charles met up by the fountain in the Old Towne Orange Plaza and that's how Haunted Orange County was born! On this episode, Kelly, Ernie and Charles discuss their outside passions, the crazy story of how they were connected, and some of their most favorite spooky ghost stories! I'm serious y'all - you won't want to miss these very fun spooky stories from right here in our own backyard. Thank you, Ernie and Charles, for being our guests on the podcast! Haunted Orange started out in 2009 as the brain child of Ernie Alonzo, a lifetime Old Town Orange resident who began a website just as a hobby and called it HauntedOrange.com. On the site he would post historic photographs of Orange, as well as ghost stories he collected from personal interviews of shopkeepers and business owners in Old Town Orange. Later that year he met Charles Spratley, a San Diego native, local historian and author who relocated to Orange County and had formerly ran a successful ghost tour company in San Diego. Soon the two were brainstorming on how they would turn Ernie's collection of historical data and ghostly tales into a ghost tour for Old Town Orange with a heavy emphasis on local history. In September of 2010, with much local anticipation, the first Old Town Orange Haunted History Ghost walk was launched. The summer of 2014 launched the Downtown Santa Ana Ghost Walk with an opening gala at the Howe-Waffle historic Mansion attended by city officials, local media and invited guests. The same year a name change to Haunted Orange County was made in anticipation of more Orange County city locations being added to the company's offerings. In the fall of 2017 they launched their Black Star Canyon Ghost Walk and later became the first and currently only ghost tour company to run a county licensed and permitted tour in Black Star Canyon. On February of 9, 2019 our all new San Juan Capistrano tour will debut. In addition, since 2010 they have produced a diverse offering of paranormal, haunted and horror themed special events including, haunted themed dinners, annual paranormal lecture series, sugar skull workshops, mask sculpting courses, UFO sky watches, Desert Ghost Town sleepovers, horror movie screenings, panels at halloween and paranormal conventions, guest speaking at colleges and universities, paranormal celebrity meet & greets, cemetery tours, theatrical seance recreations, psychic presentations, Bigfoot and cryptozoology lectures and much, much more! Beginning 2012 they conducted public paranormal investigation events all over Southern California as well as a handful out of state with some of the most recognized paranormal TV personalities and researchers in the world. Haunted Orange County is currently operated by Fandom Productions, a fan based entertainment and management company which also operates Bob Gurr's Waltland Disney History Tours in Los Angeles. An Over Coffee® special-edition podcast ScareLA™ 2018, Los Angeles' first Halloween convention, celebrated its sixth anniversary during the weekend of August 25th. And we had the opportunity to speak with three iconic creators about their work on the Disney Haunted Mansion and Universal Studios' "Halloween Horror Nights". Iconic Disney Imagineer Bob Gurr was onsite at the "Haunted Orange County™" booth. Walt Disney himself hired Bob, who is one of the two remaining original Imagineers. Working with Walt to design Disneyland, Bob created the vehicles--and of course, besides his designs for the miniature cars in Autopia and the Monorail, he designed the Doom Buggies for the Haunted Mansion. Bob, who was named a Disney Legend in 2004, also developed the first realistic humanoid animatronic in the 1960s, for the New York World's Fair: Abraham Lincoln, for "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln". After taking early retirement, he would go on to create animatronics for Steven Spielberg, as well as designing effects for Michael Jackson's Victory tour, among innumerable other projects. Named a Disney Legend in 2004, Bob still does consulting work for Disney today. In addition, his website says he's in the middle of another exciting independent project! A ScareLA™ favorite Meanwhile, a capacity-crowd-popular event at every ScareLA™ is Universal Studios' "Halloween Horror Nights" reveal. Every year, Universal Art Director Chris Williams and Creative Director John Murdy share a preview of Universal's new Halloween mazes, as they talk about their experiences creating them. For 2018, Chris and John will scare the daylights out of you with a maze they've wanted to create for a long time. The "Universal Monsters" maze features classic monsters from some of Universal's scariest horror films, over the decades. And now, they've all been brought together to terrify Halloween 2018 maze attendees. In addition, there's an original soundtrack, created by Slash, former lead guitarist of Guns and Roses. (And it's going to be a screamingly good time!) Bob, Chris and John talked about their experiences, behind the scenes, creating the attractions that will draw you in, show you a good time and very possibly (in Chris and John's case) evoke some "monstrous" Halloween chills.
