BOO! This is part 2 of an episode we did last year at Halloween (Part 1 is Episode 24). If you haven't heard of Haunted OC, you're missing out on the spook! Ernie Alonzo and Charles Spratley have been doing haunted ghost tours of Orange County cities for over 10 years! They conduct their tours year-round, rain or shine (and Kelly has done a tour in both rain AND shine!) They started their tours in Old Towne Orange when Ernie began his research on the antique shops around the Plaza and the eerie stories that would happen in them. Ernie shares that the Antique Depot consistently had the best spooky stories - which sparked the beginning of the tours. Charles started his own ghost tour company in San Diego as a passion project but moved to Orange County for a life change. He started working for Disneyland and one day, when he was talking to a park guest named Joe, he told him his interest in ghost tours. Joe ended up saying, “You need to meet my cousin Ernie!” and the rest is history. Ernie and Charles met up by the fountain in the Old Towne Orange Plaza and that's how Haunted Orange County was born! On this episode, Kelly, Ernie and Charles discuss their outside passions, the crazy story of how they were connected, and some of their most favorite spooky ghost stories! I'm serious y'all - you won't want to miss these very fun spooky stories from right here in our own backyard. Thank you, Ernie and Charles, for being our guests on the podcast! Ramya Sinha was the perfect guest for this week's podcast. Ramya is a rising junior at Chapman University and extremely involved! She is a Business major with a Sociology and Africana Studies double minor. She is a member of ChapTones a cappella, Gamma Phi sorority and is President of the Black Student Union (BSU) at Chapman University for the second year. She has a lot on her plate, and she handles it with grace. In this episode, Ramya and our first-time host, Marshall, discuss Ramya's time at Chapman. They dive into Ramya's experience as a black woman at Chapman, her experience being the President of the longest-standing club at Chapman, and the BSU Action Plan that she has presented in efforts to create institutional change at Chapman University. The action plan clearly outlines 12 practices and changes that BSU and their supporters demand to see at Chapman University, and Marshall and Ramya discuss just a few of them on the podcast. Ramya is filled with passion in everything she does so you are sure to enjoy this episode of Peeling Back the Layers. Before Matt could talk, he would watch his sister in dance class and by the time he was home he would have her entire routine memorized. Before high school, he saw a dance team perform and as soon as he saw them, he knew that was what he wanted to do. So it's fair to say Matt has been dancing his entire life. Matt moved to Orange 3 years ago with a goal to be around more swing dancers and like-minded people.Due to quarantine, all partner dancing and many dance events have closed down. Throughout this time, Matt couldn't find the right outlet to dance so he started going on a walk everyday to get out of the house, and his walks always turned into a dance - whether he realized it or not! He just started dancing and a car would honk at him or wave - so he decided to just film his dances and bring a smile to more people, virtually! We found Matt on Instagram, and we definitely recommend you check out his page linked below. On this episode Matt, Lindsey, and Alex talk about how Matt started his Old Towne dancing videos, how he taught a dance at Disneyland's Dapper Day, how the quarantine actually inspired this silver lining in Matt's life. Lauren, Mike, Alex, and Lindsay discuss how their businesses are operating during COVID-19, what juicy deets they know about OTO, and how to dine and shop at the same time! Heather McLeod has always been a pug-lover. She had a pug growing up and when she became an adult, before she knew it she had three pugs. One day, she had a friend visit her and spend the night. In the morning, she made her friend breakfast with a note, “Welcome to the Three Pug Inn,” and the name stuck! This led Heather to become the professional baker, entrepreneur, and kitchen wiz she is today! She is the owner of Three Pug Bakery, a full service bakery and catering company. She has hosted events at the Dizzy Daisy and caters her delicious treats all over Orange County. Through her time in the hospitality industry, Heather learned many lessons about empathy, and shared her perspective with us. Due to COVID-19, she has been able to shift her focus from her day job and focus so much of her attention on Three Pug Bakery. “We love being inspired by you. Unleash our imagination and let us create custom items and menus tailor made for you. Specializing in healthy comfort, vegan and all around tail waggin' cuisine,” Heather shares on the website. Surprise! Peggy Calvert is a returning guest to the podcast because she has a story so sentimental and sweet, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to share it with you. Let's jump back to 1966, and Peggy is a sophomore at Villa Park High School. The following year was the first year that El Modena High School would start, where Peggy would be transferring. She was asked if she would like to contribute to the creation of the school, and of course she said yes. Her committee was in charge of organizing a way to choose the mascot and the school colors. In September of 1966, it was time to go to the new school. On the first day, Peggy noticed there was no grass or lockers, and in that time, backpacks were thought of only for camping and not for carrying books. “I don't why we never thought of that,” said Peggy. In her time at El Modena, Peggy was a cheerleader on the first-ever cheer squad, member of Project Stem (getting shrubs and trees for El Modena), and was a member of the first graduating class of El Modena High School. Clearly, the running theme in Peggy's life is spirit, storytelling, happiness, and joy. “If it's not fun, I don't wanna do it,” said Peggy. We've got merch! Our host this week, Lindsay, met our two musical guests in college at Concordia University. Alex is the Associate Director of Music at St. John's Church and his job is to run the music and organize the worship services. After college, he started subbing handbells for the church group and worked his way up to his position now. Christian is the Director of Ministries at Immanuel Church where he hires musicians to play and directs the choir. He decided to apply for the position while he was in the middle of getting his masters degree, and it ended up being a perfect fit. During quarantine, Christian has been working with Immanuel to host shortened, pre-recorded services that are available online, with music throughout of course. St. Johns has adapted to the new norm by also going virtual on their website, and are now experimenting with an outdoor service! Visit the links below to join the worship. On this episode, Alex, Christian, and Lindsay discuss the history of musical handbells, how the brothers discovered their passion for music, and how you can support them and hear music at St. Johns and Immanuel in the future! Amber is our favorite bartender in Old Towne and we are very excited to have her on this week's episode of What's Juicy. Amber is back to work, under the stricter guidelines for reopening restaurants and bars across the state of California, and shared with us how The District Lounge and Woody's are creating as safe of an environment as they can. As for Woody's, the breakfast bar has been closed, all employees are wearing masks and gloves, and tables are marked off so no restaurant-goer has to sit within 6 feet of other customers. They're also offering happy hour throughout the entire restaurant, not just the bar. Hand sanitizers are also stationed throughout the restaurant. As for The District Lounge, their hours have changed to 4-11PM. They have altered some seating arrangements to create a safer environment for customers, while still offering Taco Tuesday.Thank you so much to Amber for being on the show and telling us What's Juicy. Lindsay, Alex and Amber talk a lot about “the new normal.” For people around the world, an adjustment will be needed to allow us our favorite conveniences while not putting anyone at risk. Peggy Calvert calls herself “the Johnny Appleseed of ukuleles” because she practically knows everything there is to know about them. We had the honor of welcoming Peggy Calvert to be our first guest on A Circle in a Square's Historangical. Historangical is a word we made up that combines history + stories + Orange! In these segments, you will hear some good old fashioned storytelling woven with the history of our beautiful town of Orange. Whether you are an Orange resident or beyond, listen in to hear a new perspective and - surprise - some live ukulele music!Peggy's career has been largely in recreation, doing programming for adults, children and seniors for the city. In 2007, she ran a community arts center that focused largely on arts and music. In the summer, she would host a luau for the kids and wanted someone to learn to play the ukulele. After asking her staff, she decided to teach herself how to play. With her new busy job and newfound talent, she wanted to find a new relaxing hobby, got some ukulele lessons and joined a ukulele group to play. After two years, she wanted to bring a ukulele group to Orange. She was able to start the Ukulele Soup program in Orange in October 2013, where she would provide all ukulele lovers the opportunity to play music and learn more about the art of ukuleles. When it came time to host her first session, she was nervous no one would show up, but lo and behold, 18 people showed up to play ukulele! Since 2013, Peggy has created a monthly group for ukulele players to come together, play music, and gain a larger appreciation for the 4-stringed instrument. Thank you so much for being on the podcast, Peggy, and for sharing your talents with us! Visit the Ukulele Soup Facebook page below for more information! We've got merch! On an emotional and inspiring segment of Peeling Back the Layers, Julie Lopiccolo joins Kelly on the podcast. Julie is the Founder of the Jasper Ray Foundation, an organization dedicated to raising awareness and prevention of drowning and child safety. Many do not know that drowning is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5. To share a part of the emotional story, I thought I would put it in Julie's words. From the website, she shares, “Our babysitter, who was with Jasper one day a week, took him from his safe home to her home where there was an ungated pool. She left him alone for only minutes and later found him face down in that pool. He spent nearly a week in the hospital fighting for his life, but lost that battle. Our lives have been forever altered by Jasper, his laugh was the greatest sound to our ears, his kisses and hugs like heaven on earth. We did not know the bounds of love until he came into our lives and we will miss every single day on this earth without him.”Because of this, Julie has dedicated her life to ensuring that no parent has to go through this tragedy ever again. She wanted to manifest her pain into something positive, and strives to bring people the education needed to make their homes toddler-safe. In this episode, Kelly and Julie discuss Jasper's story, when to start your children in swim lessons, and Julie's top tips for water safety. To learn more about the Jasper Ray Foundation, Julie's mission, and how to keep your children safe around water, check out the links below. This week is extra juicy, especially for our Chapman U listeners! On this segment of What's Juicy, Kelly and Chapman alumna Andrea are joined by Chapman University President Daniele C. Struppa, Ph.D. Inaugurated on September 1, 2016, Daniele Struppa is Chapman University's thirteenth president. Previously, Dr. Struppa held the position of Chancellor at Chapman University for nine years. In this episode, Kelly, Andrea and President Struppa deep dive into his role in preparing Chapman University for the return of students amid the coronavirus pandemic. During this time, Daniele has been challenged with questions regarding graduation for the class of 2020, how the pandemic will shape the future of education and on-campus living at Chapman, and what is happening to classes in the fall. We cannot imagine these are easy questions to answer, and President Struppa addresses each question with care and grace, as always. In an effort to bring students back to Chapman in the safest way, while still allowing first-year students to have an exciting welcome to college, Chapman is initiating a program called CU Safely Back, with 14 task forces. Of these, a primary task force is Residence Life and First Year Experience, who plan to set aside portions of the residence halls for students who may need to self-isolate throughout the year. Other departments discussed on the episode include orientation, sporting events, College of Performing Arts, and more! Daniele told us Chapman is preparing faculty and staff for all possible situations to ensure the safest and most enjoyable fall semester. As a father of two Chapman alumni himself, his passion for education, Chapman University, and students shines through in his answers. On the first segment of Peeling Back the Layers, Lindsay chats with Catherine Adcock, Chapman University senior and the newest Miss City of Orange! Catherine was born and raised in Orange, so when it came time for her to choose a college, she told us she couldn't imagine herself leaving!“I am an Orange resident for life,” she shared. When November rolled around, she came across the opportunity to run for Miss City of Orange. At first, she could not see herself competing in the competition but decided to go to the orientation to feel it out. After some convincing from her mother and Connie Benson, the Executive Director of Miss City of Orange, she decided to give it a try. Throughout the Miss City of Orange competition, each girl is expected to advocate for a cause they are passionate about. Catherine created “Beyond Beautiful,” a campaign that promotes body positivity. Her passion is to educate middle and high school students about the impact of negative body image, how that plays into mental health and overall promoting self acceptance. Due to the COVID-19 stay-at-home order, Catherine has optimized her campaign to be virtual for now and will implement the in-person curriculum once school is back in session. In this episode, Lindsay and Catherine discuss body image, body positivity, social media, focusing on what's on the inside, and of course Miss City of Orange.“It really was the most rewarding experience. I learned so much about myself,” Catherina shared. Be sure to listen to the full episode to hear all about our newest Miss City of Orange! We've got merch! On this episode of A Circle in a Square, Alex chats with Marni Regan, the owner, operator, and head designer of A Garden Bouquet in Orange. A Garden Bouquet is a full-service florist that just opened a flower stand on Glassell and Maple right outside of The Filling Station. Marni's joy for flowers came from her college job at Fashion Island, and she continued to dabble in her passion as a hobby by creating floral arrangements for family and friends. After pursuing a career in interior design for 20 years, Marni decided to go back to her first love and open a flower shop in Newport Beach. After her business became a wild success in Newport, Marni decided she needed a change of scenery. She sold the flower stand and moved her family to Hawaii! After almost a year of soaking up the Hawaiin sun rays, Marni felt homesick and decided to move back to her hometown of Orange. When she visited the Plaza, she loved the feel and sense of community in Old Town Orange but noticed there was a need for a flower stand. She noticed there wasn't anything like it in the area and felt like it would be the perfect addition to this cute area. She went to work and partnered with The Filling Station to become the first official street vendor in Orange! She hopes her business paves the way for other companies to become street vendors in our quaint little community. We've got merch! BOO! If you haven't heard of Haunted Orange County, you're missing out on the spook! Arianna Barrios is the owner of Communications Lab, wife and mother of two, an outstanding community member, AND is running for Orange City Council in 2020. If you ever need inspiration on how to live the busiest life ever, just ask Arianna and trust me, she is WINNING! Communications Lab is a marketing communication firm that specializes in public agencies - which has expanded past Orange County into Los Angeles and San Bernardino. Arianna is truly a woman of many crafts - and with so much insight. I consider Arianna as “Orange home-grown” as it gets because she was born here, went to Orange High School, and now lives in her childhood home. Her business is run out of Orange and she truly feels - after much moving around - that this is where she and her husband are meant to be. At the start of the episode, Arianna jumps into the rich and beautiful history of the Old Towne historic district and why people love being a part of the community. Later in the show, Arianna and Kelly transition into a discussion of Chapman University's influence on the Orange community, Arianna's ideology behind her campaign for city council, and how to find community in the place you live! Dean Kim might as well be a comedian! On this episode I couldn't stop laughing as I welcomed Dean Kim from OC Baking Company to the podcast! Dean found his love for baking when he made his first baguette at age 18. He always dreamed of having a small bread company that produced 500-1000 loaves of bread a day. But today, he is the CEO and founder of OC Baking Co, which produces produces 20-30 thousand pieces of bread in one day. He told us it feels like his business took off overnight. When it happened, Dean was shocked! He feels that Orange has been such a supportive community, and loves selling his bread at Orange Home Grown Farmers and Artisans Market. “You take one step towards Orange and they'll take 10 steps towards you,” Dean shared. Kelly shared that her advice for businesses is getting involved in the community, “Be present in your business and the community will want to help you.”We've got swag! Madelyn Walker competed in pageants twice before deciding to compete for the title of Miss City of Orange. Before the age of 18, she had no prior introduction to pageant experience and competed for Miss Anaheim Hills and Miss Canyon Hills. This past pageant, Madelyn was awarded the title of Miss City of Orange with a strong campaign on sexual harassment education and prevention by becoming an advocate for the community and even leading a TED TALK at a local high school. Madelyn strives to make the community a better place. Connie Benson is an alumnus of Chapman University and is super involved in the community. Growing up in Oregon, pageantry was a huge part of the culture in her hometown. On top of being a lawyer by day, she runs the Orange County sector of pageantry, which enriches her life. Connie loves watching girls who have never walked in heels give it a try. One of their favorite parts of pageantry culture is busting myths. Miss America is a scholarship organization. In this pageant today, judging based on beauty has been removed from the competition and the interview portion has a lot more emphasis. They like to say women are never competing against each other, they're competing against being the best version of themselves. Listen in this week as Kelly, Maddie, and Connie discuss the myths of pageantry, the responsibility of being Miss City of Orange, and their love of the craft!Maddie will attend University of California, Los Angeles this fall to earn a bachelor's degree. In Part 1 we talk about babies, births, and the changing birth culture in Southern California.Staci Berrey opened Labor of Love in 2013 to support Orange County birthing families. Her goal is to help women have a better birth experience. She quickly realized that support & education were paramount in making great birth memories regardless of HOW a woman births. She has dedicated her life to changing Orange County's cultural & birth narrative so that families can have a wonderful experience. On Part 2 of this interview, Kelly and Staci discuss the misconceptions of being a doula, such as the differences between midwives and doulas, the philosophy of being a doula, and the woman's partner's role in childbirth. Staci Berrey is our delightful doula, or birth companion! Having a baby for the first time is scary and exciting and you might never know what to expect! Staci Berrey breaks down birth: from the mental mindset needed, the cultural norms of birth, and the beauty that is birth. She says becoming a doula just happened. It wasn't because she had a passion for birthing babies, but because she has a knack for helping people through tough times. She loves learning about what moves people, what connects people, and what makes us human. Her experience through the transitional phases of life has impacted her work. Staci Berrey opened Labor of Love in 2013 to support Orange County families. Her goal is to help women have a better birth experience. She quickly realized that support & education were paramount in making great birth memories regardless of HOW a woman births. She has dedicated her life to changing Orange County's cultural & birth narrative so that families can have a wonderful experience. We have business woman talk for you this week! Liza's background is in law. She started her career as a court advocate because she's a huge advocate for justice and making sure women know their rights. After a car crash in the late 90's, Liza spent months in physical therapy regaining strength in her neck and it was during this painful recovery that she found Pilates. This was transformative for her. “It was a whole new experience in my body,” Liza shares. This led her to start her very own studio, Pilates Encore in Old Towne Orange, which is where her story meets Kelly's. Liza takes a very personalized approach to her pilates instructing, taking on clients that match her business and creating personal relationships with those clients. She shares that surrounding yourself with people who inspire you and have like-minded goals is where you find that sweet spot in life. It forces you to get to the next level. Sabrina Contreras and Erika Kotite are cultivating a lifestyle: the lifestyle of She Shed Living! When they met for the first time, they knew they would be business partners. “I feel like we filled in the blanks with each other,” Erika shared. Their eagerness to start the partnership turned into a harmonious friendship, which allows them to live out their professional dreams together. They aspire to inspire - inspire more women to work to make a difference in the world and inspire the philosophy of having no rules and taking each opportunity that comes their way. For Erika, her journey with She Sheds started with her book editing profession. With the support of this job, she wrote She Sheds: A Room Of Your Own. Because she was vocal about her obsession, it allowed her the opportunity to share her passion with others. She Shed Living has a bigger meaning than it sounds. Every product they put out aligns with the message of the brand and the lifestyle. It is nature inspired, private, and helps you live your best life. Listen in as Kelly asks, “How do I start to make my own She Shed?” There are so many avenues and ways to explore YOURS. Found out now! We've got swag! For 15 years, this week's podcast guest Megan Penn has been a catalyst for change in our community. Frequenting her college's local farmers market inspired her to start her own market here in Orange County. With the help from her board, volunteers, and merchants, everyone supported the growth of what is now called Orange Home Grown Farmers and Artisans Market. After having children and starting her family, she knew the only way to survive was to go ALL IN and follow her passion of locally sourced farming and community. Megan has won awards praising her market as one of the best in California, including an award from the American Planning Association received on the California level. On the podcast this week, Kelly and Megan talk about chasing a dream to grow vegetables and raise chickens, all while being a fantastic wife and mother. We've got swag!
