Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

An Over Coffee® special-edition podcast   Halloween, 2020, is going to be largely virtual.  Think virtual costume competitions, staying-in events and at-home entertainment. Fortunately, a number of creatives, at the intersection of art and science, are up for the challenge.  For this special-edition podcast, we're profiling three previous guests whose work you can enjoy from your home. Filmmaker Douglas Nabors is the Founder/CEO of Los Angeles-based Fun Train VR.  Since our 2018 conversation, Fun Train has been updating their first title, top-rated horror experience The Exorcist: Legion VR. (Image courtesy of Fun Train, and used with permission.)   Today, Douglas emails, the game can be played on the new Oculus Quest 2 headsets!  AND Fun Train has now added MR support to their five-chapter deluxe experience! Not to be confused with XR, MR, or mixed reality, allows a player to juxtapose their VR experience with their physical environment.  The results, with The Exorcist: Legion VR, which Fun Train warns is "not for the faint-hearted", will be truly scary this Halloween. And Fun Train is currently putting finishing touches on a new and very different classic title experience: Tarzan VR!  No release date has been announced as yet, but we'll update you as soon as we know! Summoning the "inner monster" Meanwhile, legendary scare actor/haunt producer Shar Mayer can tell you all about creating a monster--makeup, that is!  And it doesn't take expensive ingredients or previous experience. Shar, whose work includes casting and training actors for Fullerton extreme haunt The 17th Door, talked with us onsite during ScareLA 2018.  She shared her story AND gave some amazing Halloween makeup tips, which we're excited to include here. And in addition to our coverage, you can learn more about Shar's creative career in the great documentary, "HAUNTERS: The Art of the Scare" by filmmaker Jon Schnitzer.   It's a fascinating look at the talent, work and sometimes controversial thought behind extreme Halloween haunts. STEAM gets "spooky" Last, but never least, is one of our all-time favorite makers. We first met STEAM educator/freelance  technologist Mitchell Malpartida  in February, 2018, when he appeared as a special-edition panel guest.  He taught everyone how to create a robotic Valentine! And he continued creating fun stuff, both for his family and his students.  Today, he's the founder of Nevada-based Masterful Creations STEAM Academy!  In addition, he's teaching at this week's free International STEAM Summit, which runs from now through Friday, October 23rd. Last Halloween, Mitchell and his family created three maker projects, including a robotic diorama.   He also taught students how to create Day of the Dead sugar skulls--and the chemistry involved!  This year, he has another fun-scary maker project in the works--and we can't wait to tell you about it! On this edition of Over Coffee® we cover: What was involved for Douglas in creating The Exorcist: Legion VR; The story that greets players when they begin the game; How some moments in the game are scary enough to even startle Douglas!; And, a peek at a forthcoming new title from Fun Train, based on a beloved classic!; Halloween monster makeup tips from Shar; How to use common kitchen ingredients to make a scary monster face (zombie or otherwise!); A technique to create monster makeup (Shar says anyone can do this!); How Mitchell and his family created a fun-spooky Halloween diorama with robotics and 3D printing; What they're currently creating for Halloween 2020; And, a post-Halloween project which Mitchell used to teach schoolchildren chemistry plus creativity!

Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

An Over Coffee® special-edition podcast Kids, don't try this at home--times about ninety! Cyrus Pynn, who goes by the stage name, "Cydeshow Cy", is a professional circus artist. And there's a considerable amount of science in his art. When we visited ScareLA™, Southern California's first summertime Halloween convention, in 2018, Cy was on-hand, performing for the crowd.   "Crowd-pleaser" would be an understatement, for his program of sword-swallowing and (towards the end) eating a lightbulb!  We had also seen him perform in 2017, and he was amazing. For 2019, Cy has just wrapped up performances at the Northern California Renaissance Faire, as well as with TruVariety Entertainment, according to his Facebook page.  And for Halloween, he's off to South Dakota, to perform at Cadillac Jack's Gaming Resort's "Freak Night" on October 26th. At ScareLA 2018. we sat down for a quick conversation about the science behind his art.   On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How Cy first became interested in sideshow acts; What the learning process is, in learning sideshow skills; Where Cy learned his professional skills: How he learned to swallow two different types of swords; What the process of sword-swallowing is like; The science behind swallowing swords safely; Where Cy focuses his mind, in order to swallow swords; What’s involved in eating a light bulb (kids, don’t try this at home either!); Why Cy chose sideshow performing, as opposed to other areas of performance arts; What anyone giving a presentation, or leading a class or session, could learn from his showmanship. Like to see Cy perform live?   He'll be at Queen Mary's Dark Harbor in Long Beach for two days only, this Halloween season: Halloween, Thursday, October 31st and then on Friday, November 1st. Can't make those dates?  Cy messaged that he'll also be at Escondido Renaissance Faire.  According to their website, those dates are October 26-27th and November 2-3. AND, Cy says he's also performing at the Dickens Fair, in the Bay Area, during the Christmas season!

Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

An Over Coffee® special-edition podcast ScareLA™ 2018,  Los Angeles' first Halloween convention,  celebrated its sixth anniversary during the weekend of August 25th. And we had the opportunity to speak with three iconic creators about their work on the Disney Haunted Mansion and Universal Studios' "Halloween Horror Nights". Iconic Disney Imagineer Bob Gurr was onsite at the "Haunted Orange County™" booth. Walt Disney himself hired Bob, who is one of the two remaining original Imagineers.   Working with Walt to design Disneyland, Bob created the vehicles--and of course, besides his designs for the miniature cars in Autopia and the Monorail, he designed the Doom Buggies for the Haunted Mansion. Bob, who was named a Disney Legend in 2004, also developed the first realistic humanoid animatronic in the 1960s, for the New York World's Fair: Abraham Lincoln, for "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln". After taking early retirement, he would go on to create animatronics for Steven Spielberg, as well as designing effects for Michael Jackson's Victory tour, among innumerable other projects. Named a Disney Legend in 2004, Bob still does consulting work for Disney today.  In addition, his website says he's in the middle of another exciting independent project! A ScareLA™ favorite Meanwhile, a capacity-crowd-popular event at every ScareLA™ is Universal Studios' "Halloween Horror Nights" reveal. Every year, Universal Art Director Chris Williams and Creative Director John Murdy share a preview of Universal's new Halloween mazes, as they talk about their experiences creating them. For 2018,  Chris and John will scare the daylights out of you with a maze they've wanted to create for a long time. The "Universal Monsters" maze features classic monsters from some of Universal's scariest horror films, over the decades.  And now, they've all been brought together to terrify Halloween 2018 maze attendees.  In addition, there's an original soundtrack, created by Slash, former lead guitarist of Guns and Roses. (And it's going to be a screamingly good time!) Bob, Chris and John talked about their experiences, behind the scenes, creating the attractions that will draw you in, show you a good time and very possibly (in Chris and John's case) evoke some "monstrous" Halloween chills.

Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

What does it feel like, to die? Through virtual reality, Julian McCrea's Flatline Experience offers some answers to that question. Julian is the founder and CEO of London-based Portal Entertainment.  He and his crew spent sixteen years creating his six-part virtual reality series, Flatline Experience. Then, they premiered it in August, 2017 at ScareLA.   But this was no "buy-a-ticket-and-go-into-the-theatre" show. Attendees were strapped into an ambulance.  A virtual-reality headset went into place. And then... Well, telling you what's next would be a "spoiler".  And we don't do that. Suffice it to say, Flatline Experience garnered rave reviews in Southern California.  Currently, it's available for several VR headsets.  And currently, New York's VR World features the seven-minute show "Flatline Emergency Room", which takes you through a seven-minute near-death experience. AND...that's just the beginning.  The 2017 Flatline Experience is the first of a six-part series, according to their website.  You can sign up for updates on their new episodes here. Julian talked about his earlier experiences creating Immersion GO, a platform that allows VR providers to create content that reacts to audience members' facial expressions, as well as the story of creating and premiering Flatline Experience.  He also shared recommendations for anyone who might like to know more about creating virtual reality! On this edition of Over Coffee®, you'll hear: How Julian first became involved in creating immersive entertainment experiences; The story behind the creation of the Immersion GO platform (which allows content creators to produce programming that responds to audience members' facial expressions!); How The Flatline Experience came about (Julian researched and developed the project for sixteen years!); What Julian discovered, while researching the stories of subjects who had had near-death experiences; Why Julian made the creative choices Scare LA attendees experienced during the launch of Flatline Experience in August; Why Julian chose to create immersive entertainment for his audiences; The biggest creative challenges he faced, in creating the Flatline Experience; Several resources Julian recommended, for anyone interested in creating virtual reality;

My Haunt Life is the best place for long form content that any LA-based scare fiend can find. While their basis is most certainly haunts, Mike and Russell cover everything from haunted houses to immersive theatre. The latter is really where this conversation takes off, and we go pretty deep on certain topics that provide insight and opportunity for creators looking to make a tangible impact on their guests. There is no better source to find out about the most cutting edge stuff in the immersive haunt world, so diving into how Mike and Russell see that world at this moment is a real treat.      0:00- Intro   7:06- Night on Broadway http://nightonbroadway.la   8:43 Introduction Russell and Mike from My Haunt Life http://www.myhauntlife.com/category/blog/   10:55- What is a ARG? ‘Salem’s Lot has gone from being Stephen King’s second published novel, to an influential 1979 mini-series, to a second mini-series in 2004 that expanded on the townsfolk and the darkness of the doomed Maine town of ‘Salem’s Lot. Join Kat and Marshall as they take a bite out of this story of vampires in a small town and follow its effect on the next couple decades of vampire movies.  Stay tuned as the Boys and Ghouls duo compares characters from the original novel to their mini-series counterparts and judge each of the works on how well they manage to evoke the feeling of autumn. In this podcast, Jacob discusses his upcoming class and the importance of storytelling suspense to deliver maximum fear in your haunt. Key Points: Keep it simple Repetition is crucial Suspense can be more impactful than jump scares Suspense dissipates with jump scares, which makes your Haunt's Rhythm important Proper scare plot testing is important What's the one thing any haunter can do right now? Have a key villain character; hold that character back the entire time until the finale. Jacob Chase is one of the key minds behind "Big Worm's Sherwood Scare," a non-profit haunted house that raises money for Big Worm's Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. He’s a writer/director whose first feature film THE FOUR-FACED LIAR premiered at Slamdance and went on to win the HBO Audience Award for “Best First Feature” at Outfest 2010.
