Do animals dance to the beat? When is birdsong music for a bird? Humans hear music in everything, but what about other species? On this episode we talk with Henkjan Honing, professor of music cognition at the University of Amsterdam, about the biology of musicality. Among diverse species, he and his collaborators now study how and why some animals perceive elements of music but others do not. We also discuss the earliest known examples of human musical instruments and the possible adaptive value of music. Aan de hand van bekende en minder bekende (cello)werken praat Mirjam hierover met Henkjan Honing, hoogleraar muziekcognitie. Unter dem Titel «Der Klang der Tiere» zeigt das Historische Museum Basel eine Ausstellung, die untersucht, warum wir Menschen so gerne Musikalität auf das Tier projizieren. Können Vögel «singen»? Und was ist er Reiz daran? Fakt ist, dass wir tierische Materialien brauchen, um Instrumente zu bauen. Das ist nicht immer unproblematisch. Wir sprechen bei einem Rundgang mit Museumsdirektorin Isabel Münzner. Henkjan Honing, Professor für Musikkognition, seinerseits erklärt, was es mit der Musikalität von Tieren auf sich hat. A neighbor claims the alpacas are a nuisance because it's turned his neighbor's backyard into a smelly pasture. The alpaca owners say they've been cooperative with the city and have already re-homed two alpacas. They now claim that they clean up after the remaining duo on a daily basis. These alpacas are not outside all the time though. They are indoor-outdoor pets. The owner claims alpacas are quieter and their poop smells less than a dog's poo. Beth Anne Steele of the FBI says, "Fraudsters are prowling the web to find families who are so desperate for the perfect pooch that they are willing to adopt sight unseen." The scam usually starts when someone comes across a pet adoption ad online then unwittingly engages with the scammer and proceeds to pay a series of fees. We were honoured to speak with Professor Henkjan Honing, one of the leading researchers of music cognition and biomusicology. Tom Service discusses Beethoven at the keyboard with pianist Angela Hewitt, who is currently touring Beethoven's Emperor Concerto. He also considers animal and human brain responses to music with Henkjan Honing (editor of a new book The Origins of Musicality) and with Felix Stroeckens (who has been putting crocodiles in an MRI scanner and playing Bach to them). He also investigates a new opera being toured round Scotland's whisky distilleries by NOISE, and meets Ewan Campbell to discuss musical maps in the context of radical scores from the Middle Ages to the present day.
