Ep 150 Description:  “Pleasure is not a luxury. It is not a distraction. It is a human right. And reclaiming it—in childbirth, in healthcare, in life—is a path toward healing,  well-being, and activism.” —Debra Pascali Bonaro   Our bodies are intricate landscapes of sensation, where hormones dance, nerves communicate, and physiological responses intertwine in ways we're only beginning to understand. And these same pathways that create sexual pleasure are remarkably active during childbirth, challenging centuries of medical narratives that have reduced this transformative moment to a clinical, painful procedure.  This week, Debra discusses her landmark article, Orgasmic Birth: The Anatomy of Pleasure in Childbirth, published in Frontiers in Global Women's Health Journal, delving into the science of orgasmic birth, systemic obstetric violence, reproductive justice, hormonal landscapes of pleasure, the anatomy of childbirth, cultural narratives of pain, bodily autonomy, and the transformative potential of reclaiming women's birthing experiences. Don't miss this groundbreaking episode!

In 2013, the trajectory of Amanda Nguyen's life was changed forever when she was raped at Harvard. Determined to not let her assault derail her goal of joining NASA after graduation, Nguyen opted for her rape kit to be filed under “Jane Doe.” But she was shocked to learn her choice to stay anonymous gave her only six months to take action before the state destroyed her kit, rendering any future legal action impossible. Nguyen knew then that she had two options: surrender to a law that effectively denied her justice, or fight for a change―not only for herself but for survivors everywhere. She comes to Commonwealth Club World Affairs to discuss the issues raised in her memoir of survival and hope, Saving Five, which braids the story of Nguyen's activism―which resulted in Congress's unanimous passage of the Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act in 2016―with a second imagined adventure, of Nguyen's younger selves as they―at ages 5, 15, 22, and 30―navigate through dramatic incarnations of the emotional stages of her path toward healing, not only from her rape but from the violent turmoil of her childhood. Nguyen did go on to work at NASA and other scientific institutions, and in 2024, private space company Blue Origin announced that Nguyen would be the first Vietnamese woman to fly into space on one of its upcoming missions. Additionally, Nguyen ignited the Stop Asian Hate movement and continues to help others through Rise, her civil rights accelerator. For her groundbreaking contributions she was nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize and is a 2022 Time Woman of the Year. Our program will begin with an introduction by Rowena Chiu, a former assistant to Harvey Weinstein. In 1998, she was sexually assaulted by him at the Venice Film Festival, and was coerced into signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), which silenced her for over 20 years. In 2017, a New York Times journalist came to her home and doorstepped her husband of over a decade, revealing information about the assault and NDA. Rowena was featured in the subsequent Timesinvestigation, but she insisted on remaining anonymous. In 2019, she finally broke her story on the NBC "Today" Show, live in front of 3 million viewers. Rowena's story has featured in both the book and the movie, She Said. She has given over 1,000 media interviews across four continents, for international news outlets such as: ABC, BBC, CBS, and NBC. She has testified at the House of Commons, the Massachusetts State House, and attended the State of the Union. She is writing a memoir, a novel, and a screenplay, in addition to working as a global #MeToo activist, advocating for the rights of those who are oppressed or voiceless, in churches, schools, universities and workplaces around the world. Daryl's passion for wine sees him judging at 8 international wine shows annually. He has also been a repeat guest on E television and also appeared on the NBC Today Show. He also partners and is Chief Judge at the North Coast Wine Challenge Wine Competetion and is partner with well known Chef Charlie Palmer in the prestigious and highly successful Charlie Palmers Pigs and Pinot. Pigs and Pinot is an annual 2 day event that raises over $150,000 for local and national charities. Zinfandel is a grape variety whose origins are believed to be from Europe, possibly Croatia, where it was traded to Italy and referred to as Primativo. Zinfandel's success is primarily related to California where it has been grown for 150 years. It is produced by many wineries and receives cult status among wine lovers. Many believe this variety is to California what shiraz is to Australia. Zinfandel is a hearty variety. It produces its best wines in areas where the grapevine needs to work hard. Our Kalimna shiraz vineyard has just the micro-climate to experiment with this variety to endeavour to produce wines that match California's best. It is no secret that the best California Zinfandels are from old vines, grown head-trained (aka bush vines). With this principle in mind we decided to plant and train our vines to this method. More time consuming, less yield but hopefully high quality. Our 8 acres of bush vines have been designated the “Bush Block”. This first release is a solid wine displaying very typical zinfandel hallmarks. Brick red in colour, a very spicy, raisiny aroma and a rich medium weighted palate with some apparent sweetness, although the wine is dry. This sweetness in taste comes from the higher alcohol and raisining of some of the grapes. This wine can be very much enjoyed with pasta or red meat, and will be fantastic with cheese to end a meal. We have a treat for you! I recently sat down with Daryl Groom, and opened three of his wines.Truly a Pleasure to talk with this world class winemaker. First we will look at his recent press and a little from his website)(groomwines.com) and on the wines to be featured. Prior to his current ventures, Daryl was Senior Winemaker for Penfolds in Australia where he oversaw the making of Penfolds famed red wine, Grange. He was the Executive Winemaker for Peak Wines International that owned both Geyser Peak and Wildhorse Wineries (1990-2005) and then Senior VP of Operations and Winemaking for Beam Wine Estates (2006/2007). We have three amazing wines starting with a beautiful Sav Blanc. Lenswood, in the Adelaide Hills appellation of South Australia, is where our Sauvignon Blanc is grown. It is a very cool climate with relatively high winter rainfall. Our Lenswood vineyard is dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc and is producing stunning Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Daryl says that the vineyard conditions are so perfect that all he has to do is harvest at the right moment and then get out of the way and not muck things up! What emerges from this clean, uncomplicated winemaking approach is a wine with brilliant acidity and flavors that balance citrus with floral. Brighter than California Sauvignon Blanc, and a little less pungent than New Zealand, this wine exemplifies the Adelaide Hills appellation as a world class Sauvignon Blanc producing region. Our wine is 100% Sauvignon Blanc fruit, 100% stainless steel fermented with no oak contact and 0% malolactic fermentation. Daryl's aim is to get the incredible, intense fruit flavors from the vine into the glass. This wine showcases pure Sauvignon fruit at its very best. Links to vintage specific technical information for each vintage. This wine is all a Sav Blanc wants to be,purely perfect and in fact a food and wine pairing in your very near future. Our next wine has become an instant favorite of mine! The Barossa Valley is the source of our Shiraz. With it's hot, dry conditions and fairly level valley floor and undulating hills, this appellation is generally recognized as the best red wine district in Australia. Our Kalimna property is located next door to the traditional Penfolds Grange “mother source” vineyard. The unforgiving soils of this area are well known to produce very low yields, loose clusters and extremely small berries. Classic, ultra premium Shiraz territory! Daryl looks for a little less wood in his Shiraz than is typical of Australian Shiraz. He wants a wine that is rich, but not overly jammy, tannic, or oaky in flavor so that it can show off the spicy, anise, berry flavors - true varietal characters in the grape. He is looking for a firm, fleshy structure and a fine texture. Daryl achieves his results by traditional and gentle winemaking methods: fermentation is small batches, punched down in open-top vessels; a skin maceration of only 6 days; minimal handling throughout and aging in American oak (half new, half 1 year old). Careful barrel selection increases the quality and consistency of our Shiraz. In the very near future we will discuss and feature his Zinfandel. for now please click on the links be low,and join me as we introduce you to one of the great winemakers of our current times... Bob Sutton, Professor at Stanford University, is a New York Times bestselling author of 9 books including his most recent, with co-author Huggy Rao, titled The Friction Project. Bob co-founded Stanford's Center for Work, Technology, and Organization, the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, and the “d school.” Bob has served as an advisor to McKinsey, Bain, and Microsoft, as a Fellow at IDEO, and as faculty at the World Economic Forum, and he is currently a Senior Scientist at Gallup. Bob has given keynote speeches to more than 200 groups in more than 20 countries and has been a guest on numerous radio and television shows, including ABC, Bloomberg, BBC, CNBC, Fox, NBC Today Show, PBS, NPR, Marketplace, and CNN. In this episode we discuss the following: The best leaders see themselves as trustees of other's time. As Bob told his employer at Stanford, and even a Google executive yesterday, “If the California DMV can be trustees of our time, you can do it for your employees too.” At the CA DMV, Bob showed up at 7:30 am, and 60 people were in front of him. Bob was thrilled when he saw a worker walking each row passing out forms, prepping people for their visit, and re-routing those in the wrong line. This DMV hero was a trustee of other peoples' time (and Bob was out in less than an hour). Our natural tendency is to add things to anything we do, whether it's a recipe, a vacation, or our jobs. But when we switch to the subtraction mindset, we can vastly improve things. Switch to the subtraction mindset: In the state of Michigan there was a form that 2.5 million residents filled out that had 1,000 questions. But thanks to Project Reform, the form is now 80% shorter and takes half the time. Lead with love. Starting with love, and then building the logistics behind it, can lead to vastly improved experiences compared to starting with logistics. For example, when Netflix made it easy to cancel, they got much better data from their customers.   Follow Bob: Twitter: https://twitter.com/work_matters LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bobsutton1/ Website: https://www.bobsutton.net/ Follow Me: Twitter: https://twitter.com/nate_meikle LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/natemeikle/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nate_meikle/

For a short while, the ham radio world was abuzz with comments on a shot at the very end of the Netflix movie Laave the World Behind, about a NYC couple who rent a house on Long Island for a weekend getaway. The world quickly goes to hell, though they only get vague signs of it as TV, cable, internet and cell phone service goes out. Then weird things start happening around them. SPOILER ALERT At the very end of the movie, there's a bunker with an elaborate ham station, receiving a digital message about cities being under attack and elevated radiation, advising anyone receiving the message to take shelter. The movie got fairly favorable critic reviews, but terrible audience reviews.Gary K4AAQ and Cyndi KD4ACW were among the ‘terrible review' contingent. David W0DHG hadn't finished the movie yet, but after hearing Gary's review, he was eager to see how bad it really was. Oh, and Gary plays a few clips to demonstrate what was so bad, and to show that ham station. Also… no Netflix take down (so far). But first… David and Gary look at an NBC TODAY Show clip of an Erie PA area high school ham club (actually an Advanced Technology Group) complete an ARISS contact. All ARISS contacts are special events, particularly to the groups and schools involved. What made this contact unusual is that 1) the students did all the work, and 2) it made Network level news. They also made the local news, and they have their own YouTube Channel with their own play-by-play of the event, and other group activities. Here's the link to our ARISS Playlist, including that 1992 SAREX contact.

Buy One, Give One = “BOGO” for the Modern Age: How Dave Heath, CEO & Co-Founder of Bombas, Built a Brand In the Spirit of Giving

Dave Heath is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bombas. Prior to the launch in 2013, Dave dedicated two years to rigorous product testing and refinement to create the best performing and most comfortable sock available, while staying true to their mission of helping those in need. Dave holds a BA from Babson College with majors in Marketing, Management, and Entrepreneurship. Previously, he led business development as one of the founding employees at UrbanDaddy followed by joining the new media acquisitions and strategy team at Yucaipa Companies. As a true serial entrepreneur, Dave has founded three companies, with one successful exit, and has invested and consulted on a range of start-up businesses from concept, through launch and continued growth. Dave has been featured on ABC's Shark Tank, NBC TODAY Show, CBS This Morning, ABC Good Morning America, Bloomberg TV and in The New York Times, and was named EY Entrepreneur of the Year in 2017.In this episode of The Retail Pilot, Dave Heath joins Ken Pilot and discusses the journey of starting a mission-based sock company and the challenges and successes along the way. He shares insights on the importance of focus, sustainable growth, and using time to your advantage. Dave also talks about the power of partnerships and collaborations that align with Bombas' mission. He emphasizes the need for authenticity and staying true to the brand's values. Additionally, he discusses the role of technology in marketing and the future of the company. In this conversation, Dave Heath discusses the potential of AI in e-commerce and its application in various areas such as asset creation, site updates, and site merchandising. He also introduces Constructor, an AI-powered site merchandising tool. The conversation touches on the use of AI in customer service and the importance of understanding the customer experience. Additionally, Dave shares his favorite streamed shows and provides a promo code for Bombus products.Key Takeaways from this episode of The Retail Pilot with Dave Heath, CEO of Bombas:1.    Entrepreneurial Journey and Problem-Solving Approach: Dave Heath's journey began with a desire to work for himself, learning various skills and exploring different industries, always with the intent of eventually starting his own business. His approach was less about the industry and more about identifying and solving problems. He noticed the lack of socks in homeless shelters, leading him to start Bombas with a mission to donate a pair of socks for every pair sold.2.    Socially Conscious Business Model: Bombas was established with a buy-one-give-one model, similar to TOMS Shoes, to address the significant need for socks in homeless communities. Over time, this model evolved to include not just socks but also underwear and t-shirts, the top three most requested clothing items at homeless shelters.3.    Founding Team Dynamics: Dave Heath, along with co-founder Randy Goldberg and two others, formed a cohesive team where each member possessed specific skills that complemented one another. Their self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses helped them work effectively together, aligning their shared values and visions for the company's ethical growth.4.    Sustainable Growth Strategy: Bombas adopted a deliberate, focused growth strategy rather than chasing rapid expansion. They avoided excessive fundraising and maintained profitability from the outset. They prioritized methodical growth, aiming for sustainability and quality over immediate scale. This approach allowed them to retain control and avoid unnecessary stress associated with continuously raising capital.5.    Multi-Channel Distribution Strategy: Despite primarily being a direct-to-consumer (D2C) brand, Bombas strategically entered the wholesale market after reaching a certain revenue milestone. They carefully selected appropriate retail partners, ensuring the brand fit and maintaining their status as the top-selling sock brand in every store they entered. While primarily D2C-focused, they've recognized the value of being present where customers shop, gradually expanding into various channels without diverting too many resources from their core business.6.    Product Distribution Strategy: Dave Heath emphasizes a focus on strategic distribution channels like Nordstrom rather than vending machines, as the latter may not significantly impact Bombas' growth due to low sales volume.7.    Brand Strategy & Collaborations: Bombas values collaborations that align with their mission. Dave highlights partnerships with Sesame Street, Disney princesses, and LGBTQ+ initiatives, showcasing the brand's commitment to giving back and staying mission-driven.8.    Marketing Approach: Bombas employs a multi-channel marketing strategy, using various platforms like TV (including connected TV), Facebook, Google, and more. They leverage different channels to reach diverse audiences, considering each channel's effectiveness for specific demographics.9.    Competition Perspective: Bombas sees larger commodity incumbents like Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, and Gildan as primary competitors. They aim to capture market share from these established brands by positioning Bombas as a premium mass-market brand known for comfort and quality.10. Tech Integration: While Bombas utilizes technology, such as AI tools for customer service and site merchandising, they prioritize being an apparel company that uses technology, not a technology-driven company. They cautiously approach integrating tech, focusing on customer experience and efficiency without compromising their core values.

Personally, I changed my major a few times, at least partially because there was so much that I wanted to learn. What if you could earn multiple degrees and explore a bunch of majors? How about 17 degrees?  Sounds like a fantasy but, believe it or not, that is exactly what my guest on this episode did. He has studied in various fields and has attended schools like Harvard, Stanford, Brown, Dartmouth, and Columbia. In fact, during the window of 2000 to 2004, he earned six different master's degrees! Ben currently works as a college admissions counselor, and he has appeared in many national newspapers like the NY Times and TV programs like NBC Today Show. I had no idea what Ben would be like and, it turned out he was as likeable as he is educated. It was so much fun to geek out with Ben to the topic of learning and all it can do for us. This is an unusual opportunity to listen as one of the most educated people on the planet talks about the benefits of being a perpetual learner.

On this bonus episode of The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Stephanie and her mom, Marineda.  A few weeks ago I did a fun episode called The Godmother and referred to it as a modern-day fairy tale. Well, I just learned of another modern-day fairy tale—a sweet Mother's Day oriented tale that I would have found compelling in and of itself. What made it extra special for me was when I clicked on a Holland America Line blog post, I recognized in the accompanying photo of Stephanie and Marineda, that I knew Marineda from when we worked together in Florida where I lived for nine years. And, we were Facebook friends. When I read the post, some other considerations made me that much more interested in their story. First of all, Marineda and I both grew up in Brooklyn, and moved to Long Island, NY. The blog post discussed a Holland American Line Westerdam cruise to Alaska that Stephanie and her mom sailed. We recently did a podcast episode, Fire & Ice, which detailed our own cruise to Alaska in May so I couldn't wait to compare and contrast Alaska experiences with them. Stephanie and Marineda's Westerdam cruise was the result of a touching letter Stephanie sent to the NBC Today Show about her relationship with her mom in response to a Mother's Day Brunch challenge. Perhaps most amazingly, I learned from the blog post that Marineda was 88–which means we worked together when Marineda was 85! I'd have never guessed that!I am so appreciative they agreed to share such a beautiful story with the listeners of The Joy of Cruising Podcast. The Joy of Cruising Again is now available! When her family moved to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, Hilde didn't complain. Instead, she started reporting.   Hilde began by reporting on the birth of her sister, the newest resident on Orange Street, then began expanding her coverage to the entire city. She interviewed hundreds of locals in her effort to deliver “All the News Fit for Orange Street”: a seed exchange at the local library, a fundraiser for a hospital's neonatal unit, a fire at a church, and a mysterious vandal destroying landscaping on city property.   Everything changed when Hilde received a tip that a terrible crime had happened just blocks from her house. By using the tools she had learned on the beat, the enterprising young reporter was able to confirm the facts and get the important information out to the public several hours before the other local media.   Hilde was proud of her work, but not everyone in her small town felt that way. Cyberbullies targeted her, zeroing in on her age and gender. Hilde considered ignoring them but decided she had to stand up to the haters to protect the reputation she had worked so hard to earn. Her response went viral, and nearly every major news organization took notice.   Hilde hasn't let anything stand in her way since. ABOUT HILDE KATE LYSIAK Hilde Kate Lysiak is the reporter and publisher of the Orange Street News. Since starting her paper at the age of seven Hilde has written and published hundreds of stories in her hometown of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. Hilde has been recognized for her work in the New York Times, NBC Today Show, GMA, The Washington Post, and thousands of other media across the world.

Near-death experience podcast 557 is Barbara Bartolome. Barbara is the Founder and Group Leader of IANDS Santa Barbara. Barbara has experienced two Near-Death Experiences (NDE), the first at 18 months old and the second when she was thirty-one years old. She very clearly remembers and recounts the second NDE, where she immediately and accurately told the Neurosurgeon, Orthopedic Surgeon, and medical team that were present what had been said and done in the room during her resuscitation. Shocked, they denied it to avoid liability for the error that had caused her death. She chose to never speak about it with anyone until about a dozen years after it had occurred, when she found out that others had experienced NDEs, worldwide, and that she wasn't alone. Barbara had never been told about her early childhood NDE until her eldest brother disclosed it to her when she was in her mid-fifties. Her brother was completely unaware of her second NDE when he brought his memory of the childhood NDE up to her. He had been twelve years old when he had witnessed his little sister die for approximately five minutes and then return to life, and he had been sternly told by their parents to never mention that it had occurred. Barbara founded the IANDS Santa Barbara group in August 2011, and their meetings and events routinely draw large audiences. Barbara states that NDEs are opening up the world to the reality of non-local consciousness and she's thrilled to be helping people learn that death is just a transition back “home” and that we all are here to love others, learn much, and enjoy all aspects of our life adventures! Barbara and her NDE have been featured on the NBC Today Show, in articles in U.S. News and World Report and The Sun (U.K.), and in various podcasts, TV, radio, and print articles. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jeffrey-s-reynolds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jeffrey-s-reynolds/support

Often it's the little things, and not the flashy technology or slick user interface that make a product or experience memorable. The handwritten note from customer service, or the humorous quote that pops up as you're waiting for a screen to load. Our guest today, Felicia Hatcher, calls these “moments of enchantment,” and she advocates for more opportunities for a human touch, as artificial intelligence and machine learning push us in the opposite direction. Felicia is the CEO of Black Ambition, an organization founded by Pharrell Williams that works towards closing the opportunity and wealth gap through entrepreneurship. Prior to her current role, she was Chief Popsicle and co-owner of Feverish Ice Cream, and was Co-Founder & Executive Director of the Center for Black Innovation. In our conversation, we talk about the perpetual growth and achievement across her career, what she learned bootstrapping her ice cream business from her parent's backyard to Fortune 500 clients, and how her entrepreneurial experiences shape the way she advises and mentors students and entrepreneurs. Bio Felecia Hatcher is on a mission to rid communities of innovation deserts by working with community leaders and government officials to create inclusive and diverse tech/startup ecosystems as the Co-Founder of Code Fever, Black Tech Week and Tribe Cowork and Urban Innovation Lab.  Hatcher has raised over 3 million dollars to support Code Fever's work which sits at the intersection of economic development and inclusive innovation.
